Abstract:We introduce subwavelength color routers with perfect optical efficiency in a red-green-green-blue (RGGB) Bayer layout for solid state image sensors. This is the first demonstration of a subwavelength device concept that shows the full potential of color routing, i.e., perfect routing without loss of photons, with a broadband, polarization-independent, and angular robust response. As an example, we show a color router for 320 nm wide image sensor pixels, which are two times smaller than the smallest state-of-the-art pixels, that features perfect optical efficiency, i.e., no crosstalk between color channels, no reflections, and no leakage into non-photodetector regions, even though the pixel photodetectors are 2–3 times smaller than the wavelength of the incident light. Our color router outperforms all other color separation approaches and can replace the entire optical stack in solid state image sensors.

Abstract:A novel multispectral color sensor based on vertically stacked structure is introduced. The advantages of this sensor include anti color aliasing, high spatial resolution, elimination of color interpolation and low-pass filter. Its basic principle lies on the silicon material's different of penetration depth of electromagnetic wave with different wavelength, i.e., blue light with short wavelength is mainly absorbed on the surface, while red light with longer wavelength is mainly absorbed at deeper location. The current research and development are related to two pixel structures: the buried pn junctions structure made by standard silicon process, and stacked amorphous silicon and its alloys thin films made by PECVD. The former one adopts standard silicon technology while the latter one adopts amorphous silicon, which has better optical performance, thus greater flexibility in design. The authors focused on the theoretical and experimental analyses of the spectrum mechanisms and output performances with different pixel structures, and discussed-the way for further research.

Abstract:In the field of long-wave infrared multispectral imaging, traditional snapshot techniques often deploy broadband filters in front of the sensor to encode spectral information about the scene. However, this approach causes a significant loss of precious optical energy, especially for the limited radiation energy of the long-wave infrared region. To address this issue, we first propose an imaging strategy that replaces conventional filters with specially designed diffractive elements, which are optimized by a gradient descent algorithm. The diffractive elements enable effective steering of diverse wavelengths to their designated pixels, significantly minimizing the reflection losses throughout light transmission and thereby augmenting the system's optical energy efficiency. Secondly, we use the MST neural network to reconstruct the spectral information and realize the snapshot computational multispectral imaging. In the experiments, we concentrate the wavelength band within 8-12 mu m, simulating and optimizing the design of the diffractive elements. We also discuss how this innovative design can adapt to the field change of image plane that may be encountered in the actual imaging system. Emulation experiments show that our proposed method ensures excellent spectral separation and high imaging quality under different field conditions. This study provides new ideas and practical guidance for the lightweight and efficient development of long-wave infrared multispectral imaging technology.

Abstract:Pixel scaling effects have been a major issue for the development of high-resolution color image sensors due to the reduced photoelectric signal and the color crosstalk. Various structural color techniques have been proposed and demonstrated the large freedom in color manipulation by the structure design. However, the optical efficiency and the color distortion limit the practical applications due to its intrinsic filtering mechanism. Instead, on-chip full-color routing is quite charming for improving the signal-to-noise ratio. In this paper, a single-layer quick response code like nanorouter is proposed for the full-color light routing in a pixel level of image sensors. It shows much higher routing efficiency than various planar lens schemes for signal wavelength focusing. Moreover, over 60% signal enhancement with robust polarization insensitivity is obtained in all three primary color bands with a same nanorouter by a multi-objective optimization method. Negligible color distortion is observed from the reconstructed color image. Such a simple nanorouter structure is promising for the development of image sensor, photovoltaics and display.

Abstract:CMOS image sensor (CIS) plays a crucial role in diverse optical applications by facilitating the capture of images in the visible and near-infrared spectra. The enhancement of image resolution in CIS by an increase in pixel density is becoming more significant and realizable with the recent progress of nanofabrication. However, as pixel size decreases towards the diffraction limit, there is an inevitable trade-off between the scale-down of pixel size and the enhancement of optical sensitivity. Recently, to overcome this, an entirely new concept of spectral sensing using a nanophotonic-based color router has been proposed. In this work, we present a metasurface-based spectral router to effectively split the spectrum from visible to near-infrared and redirect through the four optical channels to the targeted pixel surfaces. We optimize the metasurface that simultaneously controls the phases of the transmitted light of targeted spectra, i.e. red (R), green (G), blue (B), and near-infrared (NIR), which is the largest number of channels reported based on a single layered metasurface and has an optical efficiency that surpasses the efficiency of conventional color filter systems.

Abstract:Polarization, an attribute of light, carries a lot of vital information independent of intensity and color content. Polarization imaging is very useful in applications including diffuse/specular component separation, material classification and reflectance estimation. Color routers applied in color imaging provide an efficient way to sort and guide different color lights to the corresponding output ports. Here, we report the design and exper-imental realization of a compact metasurface-based polarization color router. This color router shows a micron Bayer pattern (RGGB distribution) under the illumination of white light with any polarization. In addition, the green light intensity at the corresponding pixel changes regularly depending on the polarization light, illus-trating the polarization color router can act as a polarizer at the same time. The measured light utilization efficiency of the polarization color router reaches a value of 88%. A correlation coefficient of 0.98, which is defined as the fitting effect between the measured and theoretical illuminating light polarization angles, was achieved. This device possesses the advantages of a lightweight, high light utilization efficiency and polarization-integrated detection functions, which could provide a new way for its applications in integrated CMOS image sensors.

Abstract:Metasurface-based color routers are emerging as next-generation optical components for image sensors, replacing classical color filters and microlens arrays. In this work, we report how the design parameters such as the device dimensions and refractive indices of the dielectrics affect the optical efficiency of the color routers. Also, we report how the design grid resolution parameters affect the optical efficiency and discover that the fabrication of a color router is possible even in legacy fabrication facilities with low structure resolutions.

Abstract:With the advent of high-precision nanoscale lithography technology, high-resolution image sensing has experienced rapid development in recent years. Currently, mainstream commercial image sensors predominantly utilize Bayer array color filters to implement RGB colorful imaging strategies. However, as pixel sizes transition into the submicron dimensions, traditional dye filters used in image sensors have long been hampered by limited optical efficiency, suboptimal signal-to-noise ratios, and significant difficulties in miniaturization. In this work, a novel 4-channel RGB-IR color router for image sensing, distinct from the traditional absorption-transmission mechanisms, was proposed through inverse design methodologies. Utilizing genetic algorithms and DCGAN models, approximately 20,000 random color routing structures were generated and trained. From these, an optimized spectral splitting structure with a minimal periodic size of 1.6 um * 1.6 um was identified. This structure achieves peak optical efficiencies 1.7 times greater than those of dye filters, while also offering superior color imaging quality and signal intensity. This innovative design approach, leveraging deep learning integration, demonstrates an on-chip strategy for color realization in 4-channel image sensors, and holds significant promise for enhancing the development of next-generation high-performance image sensing chip systems.

Abstract:The three primary colour model, i.e., red, green, and blue model, based on the colour perception of the human eye, has been widely used in colour imaging. The most common approach for obtaining colour information is to use a Bayer colour filter, which filters colour light with four pixels of an imaging sensor to form an effective colour pixel. However, its energy utilization efficiency and colour collection efficiency are limited to a low level due to the three-channel filtering nature. Here, by employing an inverse-design method, we demonstrate a pixel-level metasurface-based Bayer-type colour router that presents peak colour collection efficiencies of 58%, 59%, and 49% for red, green and blue light, and an average energy utilization efficiency as high as 84% over the visible region (400 nm–700 nm), which is twice as high as that of a commercial Bayer colour filter. Furthermore, by using a 200 µm × 200 µm metasurface-based colour router sample working with a monochromatic imaging sensor, colour imaging is further realized, obtaining an image intensity twice that achieved by a commercial Bayer colour filter. Our work innovates the mechanism of high-efficiency spectrum information acquisition, which is expected to have promising applications in the development of next-generation imaging systems.

Abstract:Advances in imaging technologies have led to a high demand for ultracompact, high-resolution image sensors. However, color filter–based image sensors, now miniaturized to deep submicron pixel sizes, face challenges such as low signal-to-noise ratio due to fewer photons per pixel and inherent efficiency limitations from color filter arrays. Here, we demonstrate a freeform metasurface color router that achieves ultracompact pixel sizes while overcoming the efficiency limitations of conventional architectures by splitting and focusing visible light instead of filtering. This development is enabled by a fully differentiable topology optimization framework to maximize the use of the design space while ensuring fabrication feasibility and robustness to fabrication errors. The metasurface can distribute an average of 85% of incident visible light according to the Bayer pattern with a pixel size of 0.6 μm. The device and design methodology enable the compact, high-sensitivity, and high-resolution image sensors for various modern technologies and pave the way for the advanced photonic device design.

Pixelated Bayer Spectral Router Based on Sparse Meta-atom Array

Abstract:It has long been a challenging task to improve the light collection efficiency of conventional image sensors built with color filters that inevitably cause the energy loss of out-of-band photons. Although various schemes have been proposed to address the issue, it is still very hard to make a reasonable tradeoff between device performance and practicability. In this work, we demonstrate a pixelated spectral router based on sparse meta-atom array, which can efficiently separate the incident R (600-700 nm), G (500-600 nm), and B (400-500 nm) band light to the corresponding pixels of a Bayer image sensor, providing over 56% signal enhancement above the traditional color filter scheme. The CMOS-compatible spectral router has superior characteristics of polarization insensitivity and high incident angle tolerance (over 30°), enabled by simple compound Si3N4 nanostructures which are very suitable for massive production. Imaging experiments are conducted to verify its potential for real applications. Our pixelated spectral router scheme is also found to be robust and could be freely adapted to image sensors of various pixel sizes, having great potential in building the new generation of high-performance image sensing components.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a four-port wavelength-selective optical router on silicon-on-insulator wafer for photonic networks-on-chip. The router consists of four basic operation blocks. Each is constructed by one microring resonator (MRR) based add-drop filter rather than the traditional two microrings based 2 x 2 optical crossbar. It can provide multiwavelength routing for each path to increase the aggregate data transmission bandwidth. The possible 12 I/O routing paths are experimentally observed in the transmission spectra and each of them has the ability to route four group wavelengths simultaneously in the measured spectral range. The device has a small footprint (similar to 78 x 100 mu m(2)) and low power consumption (6.58 mW).

Abstract:A monolithic 6x6 transmitter-router with both port and wavelength switching at sub-nanosecond speed is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Based on an intra-cavity cyclic echelle diffraction grating router (EDGR) and semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) arrays, each selectable output port can realize a selected multi-wavelength laser (MWL) output. The measurement results show that all 36 input-output combinations have a single-mode emission spectrum with a sidemode suppression ratio (SMSR) over 30 dB. Simultaneous switching of six laser wavelengths is achieved together with the switching of the output port by a single electrode selection. The switching time is less than 1 ns. It can offer a cost-effective solution to multi-wavelength multi-port optical transmitter-routers for fast distributed optical switching in datacenters and high-performance computers (HPCs). Abstract:The out-of-band energy loss caused by in-built color filters significantly degrades the signal-to-noise ratio and the dynamic range of conventional image sensors, which has restricted the attempt to develop ultrahigh-density imaging devices by merely shrinking the pixel size. This issue will be more serious for security cameras, which need to collect both visible (VIS) and near-infrared (NIR) light. The existing solutions mostly explore complex photonic nanostructures, which are often too complicated for production. In this work, a pixelated spectral router is demonstrated utilizing a 2D Si3N4 Mie-type metagrating that can spatially divide NIR (850 nm) and VIS (400-700 nm) light to different pixels at high efficiencies. It has a minimum feature size larger than 360 nm, highly promising for massive production. Compared with the traditional filter design, this router can gain approximate to 42% and approximate to 30% signal enhancement for NIR and VIS bands, respectively. It is shown that it also has good polarization insensitivity and incident angle tolerance. The NIR-VIS simultaneous imaging is inspected without any complex reconstruction algorithm. Mode analysis indicates that the periodic interference of multipolar scattered fields caused by this metagrating provides the necessary degrees of freedom to spatially optimize the routing functions for broadband photons.

Abstract:Nano-color routing has emerged as an immensely popular and widely-discussed subject in the realms of light field manipulation, image sensing, and the integration of deep learning. The conventional dye filters employed in commercial applications have long been hampered by several limitations, including subpar signal-to-noise ratio, restricted upper bounds on optical efficiency, and challenges associated with miniaturization. Nonetheless, the advent of bandpass-free color routing has opened up unprecedented avenues for achieving remarkable optical spectral efficiency and operating at sub-wavelength scales within the area of image sensing applications. It has brought about a paradigm shift, fundamentally transforming the field by offering a promising solution to surmount the constraints encountered with traditional dye filters. This review presents a comprehensive exploration of representative deep learning-driven nano-color routing structure designs, encompassing forward simulation algorithms, photonic neural networks, as well as various global and local topology optimization methods. A thorough comparison is drawn between the exceptional light-splitting capabilities exhibited by these methods and those of traditional design approaches. Additionally, the existing body of research on color routing is summarized, highlighting a promising direction for forthcoming development, delivering valuable insights to advance the field of color routing and serves as a powerful reference for future endeavors.

Abstract:While structural colors are ubiquitous in nature, saturated reds are mysteriously absent. This long-standing problem of achieving Schrödinger’s red demands sharp transitions from “stopband” to a high-reflectance “passband” with total suppression of higher-order resonances at blue/green wavelengths. Current approaches based on nanoantennas are insufficient to satisfy all conditions simultaneously. Here, we designed Si nanoantennas to support two partially overlapping quasi–bound-states-in-the-continuum modes with a gradient descent algorithm to achieve sharp spectral edges at red wavelengths. Meanwhile, high-order modes at blue/green wavelengths are suppressed via engineering the substrate-induced diffraction channels and the absorption of amorphous Si. This design produces possibly the most saturated and brightest reds with ~80% reflectance, exceeding the red vertex in sRGB and even the cadmium red pigment. Its nature of being sensitive to polarization and illumination angle could be potentially used for information encryption, and this proposed paradigm could be generalized to other Schrödinger’s color pixels.

Abstract:We design and fabricate a wavelength-selective nonblocking 4 × 4 silicon optical router based on microring resonator for use in future integrated photonic interconnection networks. We successfully demonstrate 12 possible I/O routing paths and present 13 nonblocking operating states, including four broadcasting states, with worst-case extinction ratio and cross talk of 21.05 and -21.56 dB, respectively. Thermal tuning is employed to compensate the resonance shift of microring resonators caused by fabrication errors and adjust the resonance to match the International Telecommunication Unit grid with the channel spacing of 100 GHz.

Abstract:<p>Nanophotonic polarization routers, which can separate and steer light with different polarizations of transverse electric and transverse magnetic modes into different output ports, are an essential component of on‐chip integrated photonic circuits. By developing an intelligent algorithm that combines the genetic algorithm and the finite element method, various polarization routers possessing different operation bands, different structures, and different materials, which can be easily fabricated and integrated, are successfully designed. On‐chip ultrasmall silicon‐based polarization routers are experimentally demonstrated in the near‐infrared range. The footprint is only 970 nm × 1240 nm, which is the smallest demonstrated. The measured normalized transmission is up to 85% in the near infrared range. Additionally, a broadband highly efficient photon coupler is also achieved based on disordered‐grating configurations designed by the intelligent algorithm. This breaks the restrictions of traditional structures, provides a universal platform for the realization of nanophotonic polarization routers, and paves a way for the design and high‐density on‐chip integration of nanophotonic devices.</p>
