Abstract:On-chip spectral imaging based on engineered spectral modulation and computational spectral reconstruction provides a promising scheme for portable spectral cameras. However, the angle dependence of modulation units results in the angle sensitivity of spectral imaging, which limits its practical applications. Here, we proposed a design for angle-robust spectral recovery based on a group of topology-optimized plasmonic metasurface units under a 30° field-of-view, and demonstrate angle-insensitive on-chip spectral imaging in the wavelength range of 450 to 750 nm for average polarization. Furthermore, we experimentally verified the angle-insensitive spectral filtering effects of the fabricated metasurface units, and demonstrated angle-robust spectral reconstruction with a fidelity of 98%. Our approach expands the application scale of spectral imaging, and provides a guidance for designing other angle-robust devices.

Hybrid Bilayer Plasmonic Metasurface Efficiently Manipulates Visible Light

Abstract:Metasurfaces operating in the cross-polarization scheme have shown an interesting degree of control over the wavefront of transmitted light. Nevertheless, their inherently low efficiency in visible light raises certain concerns for practical applications. Without sacrificing the ultrathin flat design, we propose a bilayer plasmonic metasurface operating at visible frequencies, obtained by coupling a nanoantenna-based metasurface with its complementary Babinet-inverted copy. By breaking the radiation symmetry because of the finite, yet small, thickness of the proposed structure and benefitting from properly tailored intra- and interlayer couplings, such coupled bilayer metasurface experimentally yields a conversion efficiency of 17%, significantly larger than that of earlier single-layer designs, as well as an extinction ratio larger than 0 dB, meaning that anomalous refraction dominates the transmission response. Our finding shows that metallic metasurface can counterintuitively manipulate the visible light as efficiently as dielectric metasurface (~20% in conversion efficiency in Lin et al.'s study), although the metal's ohmic loss is much higher than dielectrics. Our hybrid bilayer design, still being ultrathin (~λ/6), is found to obey generalized Snell's law even in the presence of strong couplings. It is capable of efficiently manipulating visible light over a broad bandwidth and can be realized with a facile one-step nanofabrication process.
Dichroic Circular Polarizers Based on Plasmonics for Polarization Imaging Applications

Abstract:Dichroic circular polarizers (DCP) represent an important group of optical filters that transfer only that part of the incident light with the desired polarization state and absorb the remainder. However, DCPs are usually bulky and exhibit significant optical loss. Moreover, the integration of these kinds of DCP devices can be difficult and costly as different compositions of chemicals are needed to achieve the desired polarization status. Circular polarizers based on metasurfaces require only thin films in the order of hundreds of nanometers but are limited by their sensitivity to angle of incidence. Furthermore, few existing solutions offer broadband operation in the visible range. By using computational simulations, this paper proposes and analyses a plasmonic DCP structure operating in the visible, from 400 nm to 700 nm which overcomes these drawbacks. The resulting circular dichroism transmission (CDT) is more than 0.9, and the maximum transmission efficiency is greater than 78% at visible wavelengths. These CDT characteristics are largely independent of angle of incidence up to angles of 80 degrees.

Abstract:Plasmonics could provide compact and powerful solutions for manipulating light in deep-subwavelength dimensions, which is promising for a great range of nanophotonic technologies such as plasmonic rulers and sensors. However, the effective area of enhanced localized field induced by surface plasmon polaritons is typically restricted to the structural boundaries. In this work, we propose a method to generate high quality-factor extended electromagnetic fields via hybridizing the super-radiant state and the quasi bound state in the continuum of graphene metasurfaces. The coupling interaction involved operates as a three-level system with multiple sharp resonances immune to the polarization, which holds great promise for developing nanodevices with high sensing capacity in two dimensions.

Abstract:Plasmonic metasurfaces enable simultaneous control of the phase, momentum, amplitude and polarisation of light and hence promise great utility in realisation of compact photonic devices. In this paper, we demonstrate a novel chip-scale device suitable for simultaneous polarisation and spectral measurements through use of six integrated plasmonic metasurfaces (IPMs), which diffract light with a given polarisation state and spectral component into well-defined spatial domains. Full calibration and characterisation of our device is presented, whereby good spectral resolution and polarisation accuracy over a wavelength range of 500-700~nm is shown. Functionality of our device in a Müller matrix modality is demonstrated through determination of the polarisation properties of a commercially available variable waveplate. Our proposed IPM is robust, compact and can be fabricated with a single photolithography step, promising many applications in polarisation imaging, quantum communication and quantitative sensing.

Abstract:Metasurfaces have an exceptional capacity to manipulate the phase, amplitude, polarization, or spectrum of light. However, unit cells, or meta‐atoms, of metasurfaces are conventionally designed using regular shapes, limiting performance improvement. The utilization of metasurfaces with freeform shaped meta‐atoms for on‐chip ultraspectral imaging is proposed, where the freeform shaped patterns are generated with controllable feature sizes and boundary curvatures for feasible fabrication. These patterns broaden design diversity and enrich metasurface‐unit spectral response with complicated Bloch modes, thus improving spectral imaging performance with enhanced spectrum recovery precision for broadband spectra and smaller center‐wavelength deviation for narrowband spectra. A snapshot on‐chip ultraspectral imaging, with 356 × 436 spectral pixels is experimentally demonstrated. Spectral resolution is state‐of‐the‐art, at 0.5 nm, and mean fidelity of spectral reconstruction for a standard color board reaches 98.78%. These results support future applications in the field of precise intelligent perception. Moreover, the generating method for freeform shaped patterns also benefits for the forward and inverse designs for high‐performance metasurfaces.
Near-infrared Plasmonic Sensing and Digital Metasurface Via Double Fano Resonances.

Abstract:Plasmonic sensing that enables the detection of minute events, when the incident light field interacts with the nanostructure interface, has been widely applied to optical and biological detection. Implementation of the controllable plasmonic double Fano resonances (DFRs) offers a flexible and efficient way for plasmonic sensing. However, plasmonic sensing and digital metasurface induced by tailorable plasmonic DFRs require further study. In this work, we numerically and theoretically investigate the near-infrared plasmonic DFRs for plasmonic sensing and digital metasurface in a hybrid metasurface with concentric ϕ-shaped-hole and circular-ring-aperture unit cells. We show that a plasmonic Fano resonance, resulting from the interaction between a narrow and a wide effective dipolar modes, can be realized in the ϕ-shaped hybrid metasurface. In particular, we demonstrate that the tailoring plasmonic DFRs with distinct mechanisms of actions can be accomplished in three different ϕ-shaped hybrid metasurfaces. Moreover, the resonance mode-broadening and mode-shifting plasmonic sensing can be fulfilled by modulating the polarization orientation and the related geometric parameters of the unit cells in the near-infrared waveband, respectively. In addition, the plasmonic switch with a high ON/OFF ratio can not only be achieved but also be exploited to establish a single-bit digital metasurface, even empower to implement two- and three-bit digital metasurface characterized by the plasmonic DFRs in the telecom L-band. Our results offer a new perspective toward realizing polarization-sensitive optical sensing, passive optical switches, and programmable metasurface devices, which also broaden the landscape of subwavelength nanostructures for biosensors and optical communications.

Abstract:Colour and spectral imaging systems typically use filters and glass prisms to disperse light of different wavelengths. With the miniaturization of integrated devices, current research on imaging sensors focuses on novel designs aiming at high efficiency, low power consumption and slim dimension, which poses great challenges to the traditional colourant-based filtering and prism-based spectral splitting techniques. In this context, surface plasmon-based nanostructures are attractive due to their small dimensions and the ability to efficiently manipulate light. In this article we use selective conversion between free-space waves and spatially confined modes in plasmonic nanoresonators formed by subwavelength metal-insulator-metal stack arrays to show that the transmission spectra through such arrays can be well controlled by using simple design rules, and high-efficiency colour filters capable of transmitting arbitrary colours can be achieved. These artificial nanostructures provide an approach for high spatial resolution colour filtering and spectral imaging with extremely compact device architectures.

Abstract:Metamaterials and meta-surfaces represent a remarkably versatile platform for light manipulation, biological and chemical sensing, nonlinear optics, and even spaser lasing. Many of these applications rely on the resonant nature of metamaterials, which is the basis for extreme spectrally selective concentration of optical energy in the near field. The simplicity of free-space light coupling into sharply-resonant meta-surfaces with high resonance quality factors Q>>1 is a significant practical advantage over the extremely angle-sensitive diffractive structures or inherently inhomogeneous high-Q photonic structures such as toroid or photonic crystal microcavities. Such spectral selectivity is presently impossible for the overwhelming majority of metamaterials that are made of metals and suffer from high plasmonic losses. Here, we propose and demonstrate Fano-resonant all-semiconductor optical meta-surfaces supporting optical resonances with quality factors Q>100 that are almost an order of magnitude sharper than those supported by their plasmonic counterparts. These silicon-based structures are shown to be planar chiral, opening exciting possibilities for efficient ultra-thin circular polarizers and narrow-band thermal emitters of circularly polarized radiation.

Chip-Integrated Metasurface Full-Stokes Polarimetric Imaging Sensor

Abstract:Polarimetric imaging has a wide range of applications for uncovering features invisible to human eyes and conventional imaging sensors. Compact, fast, cost-effective and accurate full-Stokes polarimetric imaging sensors are highly desirable in many applications, which, however, remain elusive due to fundamental material limitations. Here we present a Metasurface-based Full-Stokes Polarimetric Imaging sensor (MetaPolarIm) realized by integrating an ultrathin (~600 nm) metasurface polarization filter array (MPFA) onto a visible imaging sensor with CMOS compatible fabrication processes. The MPFA is featured with broadband dielectric-metal hybrid chiral metasurfaces and double-layer nanograting polarizers. This chip-integrated polarimetric imaging sensor enables single-shot full-Stokes imaging (speed limited by the CMOS imager) with the most compact form factor, record high measurement accuracy, dual-color operation (green and red) and a full angle of view up to 40 degrees. MetaPolarIm holds great promise to enable transformative applications in autonomous vision, industry inspection, space exploration, medical imaging and diagnosis.

Polarization-insensitive electromagnetically induced transparency and its sensing performance based on spoof localized surface plasmons in vanadium dioxide-based terahertz metasurfaces

Abstract:The multi-layer terahertz metasurfaces are designed to achieve polarization-insensitive electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) effect and its sensing performance based on spoof localized surface plasmons (S-LSPs). The unit cell of the proposed metasurfaces is comprised of a metallic spiral (MS) structure, square metal frame (SMF) structure, and vanadium dioxide (VO2) layer. The EIT effect is realized by the bright-bright coupling between spoof electric localized surface plasmons (S-ELSPs) and electric dipole, which can be proved by the multipole scattering theory. The maximum value of transmission amplitude at the transparent window is 0.91, and the modulation depth can reach 51% by adjusting the conductivity of VO2. The theoretical results based on the two-particle model show excellent agreement with the simulated results. Moreover, the change of polarization angle has little effect on the EIT effect and the proposed metasurfaces show polarization-insensitive characteristics. The slow light effect of the proposed metasurfaces can also be dynamically controlled by tuning the conductivity of VO2. Due to the high Q value of the transparent window, the proposed metasurfaces exhibit excellent sensing performance, and the sensitivity is 0.172 THz RIU-1. Our study provides a method for the fabrication of EIT metasurfaces and has a broad application prospect in slow light devices, sensors, and modulators.

Abstract:On-chip polarization-sensitive photodetectors are highly desired for ultra-compact optoelectronic systems. It has been demonstrated that polarization-sensitive photodetection can be realized using intrinsic chiral and anisotropy materials. However, these photodetectors can only realize the detection of either circularly polarized light (CPL) or linear polarized light (LPL) and are not applicable to multiple-polarization-sensitive photodetection. Herein, we experimentally demonstrate a metasurface-integrated semiconductor to realize multiple-polarization-sensitive photodetection at visible wavelengths. This device is composed of a MoSe2 monolayer on an H-shaped plasmonic nanostructure. The geometric chirality and anisotropy of the H-shaped nanostructure result in CPL and LPL resolved optical responses. By integrating a plasmonic metasurface with monolayer MoSe2, we converted polarization-sensitive optical absorption to the polarization-sensitive photocurrent of the device through the photoconductive effect. Polarization-sensitive photocurrent responses to both CPL and LPL are systematically investigated, which demonstrate a high photocurrent circular dichroism (CD) of 0.35 at a wavelength of 810 nm and photocurrent linear polarization (LP) of 0.4 at a wavelength of 633 nm. Our results provide a potential pathway to realize multiple-polarization-sensitive applications in medicine analysis, biology, and remote sensing.
Plasmonic Sensing and Switches Enriched by Tailorable Multiple Fano Resonances in Rotational Misalignment Metasurfaces

Abstract:Fano resonances that feature strong field enhancement in the narrowband range have motivated extensive studies of light–matter interactions in plasmonic nanomaterials. Optical metasurfaces that are subject to different mirror symmetries have been dedicated to achieving nanoscale light manipulation via plasmonic Fano resonances, thus enabling advantages for high-sensitivity optical sensing and optical switches. Here, we investigate the plasmonic sensing and switches enriched by tailorable multiple Fano resonances that undergo in-plane mirror symmetry or asymmetry in a hybrid rotational misalignment metasurface, which consists of periodic metallic arrays with concentric C-shaped- and circular-ring-aperture unit cells. We found that the plasmonic double Fano resonances can be realized by undergoing mirror symmetry along the X-axis. The plasmonic multiple Fano resonances can be tailored by adjusting the level of the mirror asymmetry along the Z-axis. Moreover, the Fano-resonance-based plasmonic sensing that suffer from mirror symmetry or asymmetry can be implemented by changing the related structural parameters of the unit cells. The passive dual-wavelength plasmonic switches of specific polarization can be achieved within mirror symmetry and asymmetry. These results could entail benefits for metasurface-based devices, which are also used in sensing, beam-splitter, and optical communication systems.

Abstract:Metasurfaces composed of regularly arranged and deliberately oriented metallic nanoparticles can be employed to manipulate the amplitude, phase and polarization of an incident electromagnetic wave. The metasurfaces operating in the visible to near infrared spectral range rely on the modern fabrication technologies which offer a spatial resolution beyond the optical diffraction limit. Although direct laser writing is an alternative to the fabrication of nanostructures, the achievement of regular nanostructures with deep-subwavelength periods by using this method remains a big challenge. Here, we proposed and demonstrated a novel strategy for regulating disordered plasmonic nanoparticles into nanogratings with deep-subwavelength periods and reshaped nanoparticles by using femtosecond laser pulses. The orientations of the nanogratings depend strongly on the polarization of the femtosecond laser light. Such nanogratings exhibit reflection and polarization control over the reflected light, enabling the realization of polarization sensitive optical memory and color display with high spatial resolution and good chromacity.
Highly sensitive polarization-tunable Fano resonant metasurface excited by BICs for refractive index detection

Abstract:Utilising the asymmetry of the micro-nano structure to excite Fano resonance in dielectric metasurfaces presents low loss and high field enhancement factors, and has a broad range of applications in optical sensing. Nevertheless, the asymmetry of the structure often leads to polarization-sensitive characteristics, significantly reducing the quality factor and sensitivity of the metasurface, thereby hindering its further application. In this study, the metasurface composed of dielectric materials is designed to be completely insensitive to x and y polarization. The metasurface is composed of semicircular disks, which are asymmetrically and periodically placed on a quartz substrate. By controlling the radius of the two semicircular disks, the symmetry is broken, and the bound states in the continuum (BIC) transition to quasi-bound states in the continuum (q-BIC), resulting in an ultra-narrow Fano resonance peak. Simulation results show that the magnetic dipole (MD) dominates the resonance. The designed metasurface structure was fabricated and then integrated into a microfluidic system for spectral refractive index sensing experiments. In the near-infrared band, our tests demonstrate refractive index sensing performance of 405 nm/RIU and a Q factor of up to 319, with significant symmetry of the polarization angle, which agrees well with theoretical simulations. Furthermore, the spectral response of the designed structure can be flexibly controlled by adjusting the polarization angle of the incident light. We believe that this study provides a novel integrated platform for applications such as biosensing and environmental detection, and also has certain reference value for the design of polarization optical switches and metasurface absorbers for encrypted communication.

Pixelated Filter Array for On-Chip Polarized Spectral Detection

Abstract:On-chip multi-dimensional detection systems integrating pixelated polarization and spectral filter arrays are the latest trend in optical detection instruments, showing broad application potential for diagnostic medical imaging and remote sensing. However, thin-film or microstructure-based filter arrays typically have a trade-off between the detection dimension, optical efficiency, and spectral resolution. Here, we demonstrate novel on-chip integrated polarization spectral detection filter arrays consisting of metasurfaces and multilayer films. The metasurfaces with two nanopillars in one supercell are designed to modulate the Jones matrix for polarization selection. The angle of diffraction of the metasurfaces and the optical Fabry–Perot (FP) cavities determine the spectrum’s center wavelength. The polarization spectral filter arrays are placed on top of the CMOS sensor; each array corresponds to one pixel, resulting in high spectral resolution and optical efficiency in the selected polarization state. To verify the methodology, we designed nine-channel polarized spectral filter arrays in a wavelength range of 1350 nm to 1550 nm for transverse electric (TE) linear polarization. The array has a 10 nm balanced spectral resolution and average peak transmission efficiency of over 75%, which is maintained by utilizing lossless dielectric material. The proposed array can be fabricated using overlay e-beam lithography, and the process is CMOS-compatible. The proposed array enables broader applications of in situ on-chip polarization spectral detection with high efficiency and spectral resolution, as well as in vivo imaging systems.

Abstract:While metasurfaces are now widely considered in free-space optics, their potential for coupling and tailoring guided waves is not fully explored. Here we transfer the Jones matrix method to target versatile on-chip coupling using metasurface-patterned photonic waveguides around the telecommunication wavelength of 1.55 mu m, which can accommodate both propagation and Pancharatnam-Berry phase metasurfaces for guided waves. One can either encode two arbitrary and independent phase profiles to any pair of orthogonal polarizations or deploy complete control over both the phase and polarization of coupled modes. A set of design scenarios synergizing silicon nanoantennas and low-loss silicon-nitride waveguides are proposed, including directional couplers with mode-selectivity and polarization splitters with directionality ranging from 10 to 20 dB. Furthermore, our optimization method can be further extended to cover multiple working wavelengths. Exemplary on-chip color routers are also numerically demonstrated. This chip-integrated metasurface platform further translates the concept of a metasurface into photonic integrated circuits, serving as a positive paradigm for versatile and complete control over waveguide optical signals and motivating chip-scale applications such as polarization/wavelength demultiplexers, optical switches, and multifunctional mode converters. Abstract:Micro-nano opto-electronic devices are demanded to be highly efficient and capable of multiple working wavelengths in several light-matter interaction applications, which is a challenge to surface plasmonics owing to the relatively higher intrinsic loss and larger dispersion. To cross the barriers, a plasmonic metasurface combining both high Q-factors (highest Q > 800) and multiple resonant wavelengths is proposed by arranging step-staged pyramid units in lattice modes. Different numerical relations for nonlinear frequency conversions have been constructed because of its strong tunability. Also, characteristics of high radiation efficiency (> 50%) and large localized optical density of state (> 104) have been proved through the numerical simulation. Such tunable high-Q metasurface can be implemented to quantum nonlinear process and enable the strong light-matter interaction devices into reality.
