Abstract:Herein, we report a redox-neutral and atom-economical protocol to synthesize valuable alkenyl chlorides from unactivated internal alkynes and abundant organochlorides via photoredox and nickel catalysis. This protocol enables the site- and stereoselective addition of organochlorides to alkynes via chlorine photoelimination-initiated sequential hydrochlorination/remote C-H functionalization. The protocol is compatible with a wide range of medicinally relevant heteroaryl, aryl, acid, and alkyl chlorides for efficiently producing γ-functionalized alkenyl chlorides, exhibiting excellent regioselectivities and stereoselectivities. Late-stage modifications and synthetic manipulations of the products and preliminary mechanistic studies are also presented.

Abstract:In this study, we present a ligand-free nickel(II)-catalyzed halogen exchange of aromatic halides with magnesium chloride. This method effectively facilitates the retro-Finkelstein reaction for a wide range of aryl bromides, iodides and triflates, demonstrating excellent functional group tolerance. Mechanistic studies reveal that magnesium plays a crucial role in the challenging reductive elimination from Ni(II) intermediates.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary The asymmetric reductive arylation and alkenylation of benzylic chloride under photoredox/nickel dual catalysis using chiral biimidazoline (BiIm) ligand is reported to access 1,1-diaryl alkanes and aryl allylic compounds with good yield as well as stereo- and enantioselectivities. This protocol uses more commercially available and less expensive C(sp(2))-Br as the electrophile coupling partner. A primary result using alkenyl chloride and alkyl chloride is also reported. Various functional groups are tolerated and the applications of this method are investigated by late-stage functionalization and gram-scale reaction.

Abstract:The practical and diversified functionalization of ubiquitous C(sp3)–H bonds is an economically attractive yet chemically challenging approach to build molecular complexity from abundant chemical raw materials. Herein, we have identified a very robust and practical FeCl3/HCl photocatalytic system that enables greatly efficient C–H alkylation, oxidation, chlorination, fluorination, amination, alkynylation, and sulfonylation with total turnover number (TON) of up to 9,900. The aliphatic C–H activation is mediated by chlorine radical, in situ generated from a photoactive tetrahedral [FeIIICl4]− via ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitation, and the use of HCl as co-catalyst significantly improves the total TON by more than one order of magnitude.

Abstract:Herein, we report the development of iron-catalyzed benzylic C–H oxidative amidation reactions via photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT). These reactions exhibit a broad substrate scope (60 examples) and offer operationally simple, scalable procedures for accessing valuable products from methylarenes in a single step. Mechanistic studies and control experiments confirm the participation of a photogenerated chlorine radical in facilitating the hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) from the benzylic C–H bond to initiate the reaction.

Abstract:A modified method for iron-catalyzed C-C bond cleavage and amination and alkylation of nonactivated cyclic alcohols has been developed. Using FeCl3 as catalyst, the photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer facilitates the generation of O-radicals from alcohols, the subsequent beta-scission, and finally the radical trapping. Compared with the Fe(OR)(3) catalysis, this mildly base-free system could enable the amination in a broader substrate scope with higher yields. Moreover, the C-C bond cleavage and alkylation of cyclic alcohols proceeds with electron-deficient olefins under these conditions.

Abstract:Synthetic photoelectrochemistry shows significant advantages in handling of reactive intermediates via a sustainable way and has developed to be the frontier of single electron transfer chemistry. The exploration of new photoelectrocatalysts, especially uncommon metal-based ones, will contribute to the exploitation of new synthetic strategies. Benefiting from reversible redox ability and photoactivity, the cerium salt is expected to become a new photo-electro-response medium to generate active species. In this work, with a green and sustainable reaction system (neutral conditions and renewable light and electricity as energy sources), we developed a novel type of generation of Cl· via electrooxidation and photoinduced ligand-to-metal charge transfer by using CeCl3 as the photoelectrocatalyst in the oxydichlorination of aryl acetylene. Importantly, we found that the slow releasing of chloride ions and chlorine radicals played an important role in radical chlorination. In addition, several analytical methods including cyclic voltammetry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance, and control experiments were conducted to investigate the reasonable mechanism.

Abstract:The reemerging field of photoredox catalysis offers numerous advantages towards the development of novel, sustainable and easy‐to‐execute organic transformations. Herein, we report a light‐triggered application of cerium complexes towards the C‐H alkenylation and alkynylation of alkanes. An indirect HAT‐mediated photocatalytic protocol was developed, using a cerium salt (CeCl3.7H2O) and a chlorine source (TBACl) as the catalytic system. A variety of cyclic and linear hydrocarbons were utilized, delivering the corresponding alkenylation or alkynylation products in good to high yields, displaying high regioselectivity. A series of mechanistic experiments were conducted.

Abstract:Efficient copper-catalyzed 1,2-difunctionalization of alkenes with commercially available BrCH2Cl as a chloromethylating source was carried out, in which mild conditions, high reactivity, excellent functional-group tolerance, and late-stage modification of a bioactive molecule are demonstrated. This strategy offers a solution for the diverse syntheses of nitrogen-containing terminal alkyl chlorides, a common synthetic handle that is promising for multiple derivatizations. Mechanistic studies indicate that a chloromethyl radical is involved in the catalytic cycle.

Abstract:We report a redox-neutral formylation of aryl chlorides that proceeds through selective 2-functionalization of 1,3-dioxolane through nickel and photoredox catalysis. This scalable benchtop approach provides a distinct advantage over traditional reductive carbonylation in that no carbon monoxide, pressurized gas, or stoichiometric reductant is employed. Abstract:We report a novel visible light-mediated protocol for polychlorination of alkenes by employing commercially available bulk chemicals, chloroform and chlorides. This methodology enables the installation of multiple chlorine atoms into alkene feedstocks in a single step and provides the corresponding chloroalkanes in high yields under mild reaction conditions. Additionally, this transformation tolerates a broad substrate scope of substituted olefins, chlorides and pharmaceutical-derived olefins. Initial mechanism studies suggest that a radical-polar crossover mechanism is primarily involved.

Abstract:A protocol for the oxidation of alkenes to carbonyls and acetonides via the interplay of photoexcited nitroarenes and Lewis acid catalysis is described. Terminal 1,1-disubstitued alkenes were oxidized selectively to the aldehyde products, while tri- and tetrasubstituted alkenes generated ketone products with anti-Markovnikov selectivity. Terminal mono-substituted alkenes were oxidized to acetonides when acetone was employed as a co-solvent. The mild conditions of the reaction allow for a wide range of alkenes to be oxidized. Mechanistic studies support that Lewis acid coordination to the 1,3,2-dioxazolidine intermediate formed by irradiation of the nitroarene and alkene results in a Meinwald-like rearrangement to generate carbonyl derivatives. In the presence of acetone, acetonides are formed from the same intermediate through a nucleophilic substitution pathway.

Abstract:alpha,beta-Unsaturated nitriles were found to be suitable substrates for aminochlorination with N,N-dichloro-p-toluenesulfonamide (4-TsNCl2) in the presence of CuCl as the catalyst (10 mol-%) and 4 angstrom molecular sieves. The reaction is very convenient to carry out at room temperature without the protection of inert gases, and this method provides an easy route to vicinal haloamino nitriles with excellent regio- and stereoselectivities and in good chemical yields. Abstract:Difunctionalization of alkenes enables construction of complex compounds in one pot. In this report, we presented an intermolecular, redox‐neutral three‐component dicarbofunctionalization of activated alkenes under mild reaction conditions. The mechanistic studies indicated tertiary alkyl radicals from oxalate salts were first added to alkenes in Giese‐type fashion, followed by nucleophilic addition with aldehydes to produce the desired 1,2‐dialkylation products. The catalyst system does not require any additives, with good functional group compatibility, regioselectivity, and constructs two tertiary carbon centers simultaneously.

Abstract:Trichloromethyl compounds are essential constituents in synthetic and medicinal chemistry. Hydrotrichloromethylation of alkenes represents the most straightforward approach for synthesizing trichloromethyl compounds. Nonetheless, the applicability of prior synthesis methodologies in this regard was notably constrained by the superstoichiometric use of excessive radical initiators and the formation of alkene polymers or dichloromethylation by-products. Herein, innovative and facile photocatalytic hydrotrichloromethylation of unactivated alkenes using chloroform via base-enabled photoinduced single-electron transfer is demonstrated. This strategy offers an expedited way of synthesizing trichloromethyl compounds with broad applicability and mild conditions while addressing the limitations of previous synthesis methods. Meanwhile, mechanistic studies support the process of chloroform deprotonation followed by oxidation.

Abstract:AbstractThe direct alkenylation with simple alkenes stands out as the most ideal yet challenging strategy for obtaining high-valued desaturated alkanes. Here we present a direct asymmetric dehydrogenative α-C(sp3)-H alkenylation of carbonyls based on synergistic photoredox-cobalt-chiral primary amine catalysis under visible light. The ternary catalytic system enables the direct coupling of β-keto-carbonyls and alkenes through a cooperative radical addition-dehydrogenation process involving a chiral α-imino radical and Co(II)-metalloradical intermediate. A catalytic H-transfer process involving nitrobenzene is engaged to quench in situ generated cobalt hydride species, ensuring a chemoselective alkenylation in good yields and high enantioselectivities.
