Abstract:<p>By using the NCEP/NCAR monthly average reanalysis data and number of haze day data in 1958-2017, and the average daily PM2.5 mass concentration data in 2013-2017, this paper first calculates the East Asian winter monsoon index (EAWMI)and analyzes the correlation between the winter monsoon index and the air quality in China statistically, especially for the five typical regions (Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Fen-Wei Plain, Chengdu-Chongqing Delta, Yangtze River Delta, and Pearl River Delta). Then, a division is made on the strong and weak winter monsoon years based on the EAWMI, and the atmospheric circulation and temperature fields over China and the typical regions in different winter monsoon years are compared spatially. Finally, the paper also discusses the different distribution features of the climatic circulation background responsible for strong and weak winter monsoons as well as its impact mechanisms on air quality in different regions of China. The results show that there is a north-south boundary line around 30°N for the effect of winter monsoon on air quality in China. In strong winter monsoon years, pollution is lighter in the area north of the boundary but heavier to its south. In contrast, the situation is opposite in weak monsoon years. During the strong winter monsoon years, the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and Fen-Wei Plain to the north of the boundary line are less polluted, while the Yangtze River Delta, Sichuan-Chongqing and Pearl River Delta regions to the south of the boundary are more polluted. Diagnostic analysis of circulation field suggests that in strong winter monsoon years, abnormal downward airflow exists in the area south of the boundary, limiting the convective diffusion and finally leading to the increase of pollution. In weak winter monsoon years however, there are ascending airflows, which are favorable for pollutant diffusion. During the strong winter monsoon years, there is abnormal southeast airflow in the lower atmosphere of the Sichuan-Chongqing region with weak horizontal wind speed, causing localized accumulation of pollutants, which aggravates the pollution situation. In the Pearl River Delta region, descending abnormal westerly flow inhibits the local uplift and diffusion of air and, meanwhile, there are importing pollutants from the north, so the pollution in the Pearl River Delta is aggravated.</p>
