Abstract:Redox Flow Battery (RFB) technology is the most attractive energy storage system for storing renewable energy sources in the form of electrical energy that can be fed into power networks. However, there are many challenges associated with RFB technology in terms of cost, low energy density, and scarcity of active materials. To address these issues, herein we report an innovative Metal-Organic Redox Flow Battery (MORFB) technology involving manganese ions as catholyte and alizarin red S (ARS), an anthraquinone derivatives as anolyte. The newly designed Mn/ARS redox flow cell exhibits the open circuit voltage of 1.432 V vs Ag/AgCl and possessing excellent reversibility of redox couples. The Mn/ARS redox couple depicts a consistent galvanostatic charge-discharge profile over 100 extended cycles with a maximum capacity retention of 99.99% and no cross-over across the electrodes was observed. A significant rise in the coulombic efficiency is observed in relation to the current density and on further cycling the CE remains the same at 82%, VE of 54%, and EE of 43.2% at 40 mA cm-2 current density.
