Abstract:Despite its widespread significance, the temporal coupled-mode theory (CMT) lacks a foundational validation based on electromagnetic principles and stands as a phenomenological theory relying on fitted coupling coefficients. We employ an ab initio Maxwellian approach using quasinormal-mode theory to derive an "exact" Maxwell evolution (EME) equation for resonator dynamics. While the resulting differential equation bears resemblance to the classical one, it introduces novel terms embodying distinct physics, suggesting that the CMT predictions could be faulted by dedicated experiments, for instance carried out with short and off-resonance pulses, or with resonators of sizes comparable to or greater than the wavelength. Nonetheless, our examination indicates that, despite its inherent lack of strictness, the CMT enables precise predictions for numerous experiments due to the flexibility provided by the fitted coupling coefficients. The new EME equation is anticipated to be applicable to all electromagnetic resonator geometries, and the theoretical approach we have taken can be extended to other wave physics.

Abstract:In a recent publication [Opt. Express 32, 20904 (2024)], the accuracy of the main evolution equation that governs resonator dynamics in the coupled-mode theory (CMT) was questioned. The study concluded that the driving force is proportional to the temporal derivative of the excitation field rather than the excitation field itself. This conclusion was reached with a derivation of an "exact" Maxwell evolution (EME) equation obtained directly from Maxwell's equations, which was further supported by extensive numerical tests. Hereafter, we argue that the original derivation lacks mathematical rigor. We present a direct and rigorous derivation that establishes a solid mathematical foundation for the EME equation. This new approach clarifies the origin of the temporal derivative in the excitation term of CMT and elucidates the approximations present in the classical CMT evolution equation through a straightforward argument.

Abstract:When an atom (or two-level system) is illuminated by a coherent beam of photons, it will cyclically absorb photons and re-emit them by stimulated emission, which is called Rabi oscillation. By using the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, Maxwell-Schrodinger equation is solved for modeling the Rabi oscillation. The proposed method is compared with the existing approximate theoretical models. It is found that these approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent numerical approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Abstract:A novel unified Hamiltonian approach is proposed to solve Maxwell-Schrodinger equation for modeling the interaction between classical electromagnetic (EM) fields and particles. Based on the Hamiltonian of electromagnetics and quantum mechanics, a unified Maxwell-Schrodinger system is derived by the variational principle. The coupled system is well-posed and symplectic, which ensures energy conserving property during the time evolution. However, due to the disparity of wavelengths of EM waves and that of electron waves, a numerical implementation of the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method to the multiscale coupled system is extremely challenging. To overcome this difficulty, a reduced eigenmode expansion technique is first applied to represent the wave function of the particle. Then, a set of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) governing the time evolution of the slowly-varying expansion coefficients are derived to replace the original Schrodinger equation. Finally, Maxwell's equations represented by the vector potential with a Coulomb gauge, together with the ODEs, are solved self-consistently. For numerical examples, the interaction between EM fields and a particle is investigated for both the closed, open and inhomogeneous electromagnetic systems. The proposed approach not only captures the Rabi oscillation phenomenon in the closed cavity but also captures the effects of radiative decay and shift in the open free space. After comparing with the existing theoretical approximate models, it is found that the approximate models break down in certain cases where a rigorous self-consistent approach is needed. This work is helpful for the EM simulation of emerging nanodevices or next-generation quantum electrodynamic systems.

Abstract:By making use of the dynamical algebraic approach, we study the two-mode Raman coupled model governed by the Milburn equation and find the exact solution of the Milburn equation without diffusion approximation. The exact solution is then used to discuss the influence of intrinsic decoherence on the revivals of atomic inversion, oscillation of the photon number distribution and squeezing of radiation field in the whole ranges of the decoherence parameter gamma.

Abstract:Temporal coupled-mode theory (TCMT) provides a simple yet powerful platform to model and analyze electromagnetic resonator systems. Nevertheless, restrictive assumptions and lack of rigorous connection to Maxwell's equations limit the TCMT formulation's generality and robustness. Herein, we present the Black-box Coupled-Mode Theory (BBCMT), a general ab initio CMT framework developed from Maxwell's equations and quasinormal mode (QNM) theory to model the electromagnetic interactions of dispersive, lossy, and open resonators. BBCMT development is enabled by employing Poynting's and conjugated reciprocity theorems to rigorously normalize QNMs and calculate their expansion coefficients. Our novel QNM analysis approach allows the definition of a resonator Hamiltonian matrix to characterize the modes' electromagnetic interactions, energy storage, and absorption. Uniquely, the BBCMT framework can capture a resonator's non-resonant scattering and absorption by treating the resonator scattered fields as a perturbation to those of a background structure, which can be flexibly chosen considering the desired accuracy-simplicity trade-off. BBCMT modeling complexity can be further adjusted by treating user-defined subcomponents of a resonator system as black-boxes described only by their input-output transfer characteristics. Beyond the BBCMT formulation, we present two lemmas to reverse-engineer the modeling parameters from calculated or measured far-field spectra. Moreover, we introduce the signal flow graphs from control theory to illustrate, interpret, and solve the BBCMT equations. To evince BBCMT's validity and generality, we compare the BBCMT and TCMT predictions for two plasmonic nanoresonator systems to finite-difference time-domain simulations and find BBCMT results to be a much better match. BBCMT reduces to TCMT or cavity perturbation theory under certain constraints and approximations.

Abstract:Temporal coupled-mode theory has been widely used to describe the physics of resonant optical systems. In general, an optical system can be constrained by energy conservation, time-reversal symmetry, and reciprocity. Most previous developments of temporal coupled-mode theory made use of all three constraints. In this paper, we consider separately the implication of each of these constraints on the parameters of temporal coupled-mode theory. For this purpose we made extensive use of the connection between a physical system and its time-reversal conjugate. This connection also indicates some of the nontrivial implications of the relation between the resonant properties of a physical system and its time-reversal conjugate. We validate these implications numerically by direct electromagnetic simulations of a guided resonance system. This work should enable the application of temporal coupled-mode theory to a wider range of resonant systems.
Discussions on the spatial exponential growth of electromagnetic quasinormal modes

Abstract:The temporal response of open systems is marked by damped oscillations. These oscillations, often referred to as ringings, are the signature of the decay of quasinormal modes (QNMs). A major research objective across various fields is to represent the response of open systems using QNM expansions, akin to the treatment of normal modes in closed systems. In electromagnetism, it is widely acknowledged that QNM expansions provide a relevant representation of the modal physics within the interior of compact resonators in free space, where QNMs form a complete set of the resonator. However, challenges emerge in the exterior of the resonator, where QNM fields exhibit exponential divergence, rendering QNM expansions incomplete. The divergence poses delicate mathematical issues that often lead to misinterpretations on the physics side. Hereafter, we analyze foundational concepts such as cavity perturbation theory and dissipative coupling between resonators. By studying model problems, we show that the exponential growth is physical and meaningful for understanding the interaction between remote electromagnetic bodies. The analysis consistently reveals that the coupling coefficients between QNMs of two distant bodies strengthen as the separation distance increases, therein challenging the intuition that distant bodies behave independently. These insights that shed light on the origin and implications of the divergence hold significant implications for understanding the ability of contemporary electromagnetic QNM theories in offering a modal representation of the physics in the open space surrounding resonator bodies. Our critical examination of these theories reveals the existence of two distinct perspectives and elucidates the significance of their contrasting viewpoints.

Abstract:The paper is concerned with electromagnetic wave propagation in a perturbed periodic structure. Consider a time-harmonic electromagnetic plane wave incident on a biperiodic (grating) structure. A single inhomogeneous object is placed inside the biperiodic structure. The scattering problem is to study the electromagnetic field distributions. The problem arises in the study of near-field optics and has recently found many applications in physics and biology. In this paper, an integral representation approach is presented to solve the problem. Using the approach, well-posedness of the model problem is established. In addition, it is shown that the perturbation due to the object is exponentially decaying along the periodic directions of the structure, provided that no surface waves occur.
Temporal coupled-mode theory in nonlinear resonant photonics: From basic principles to contemporary systems with 2D materials, dispersion, loss, and gain

Abstract:Temporal coupled-mode theory (CMT) is an acclaimed and widely used theoretical framework for modeling the continuous wave (CW) response and temporal dynamics of any integrated or free-space photonic resonant structure. It was initially employed to understand how energy is coupled into and out of a cavity and how it is exchanged between different resonant modes. In the 30 years that followed its establishment, CMT has been expanded to describe a broad range of nonlinear interactions as well (self- and cross-phase modulation, saturable absorption, frequency generation, gain, etc.). In this tutorial, we thoroughly present the basic principles and the evolution of CMT throughout the years, showcasing its immense capabilities for the analysis and design of linear and nonlinear resonant photonic systems. Importantly, we focus on examples of modern, open nanophotonic resonators incorporating contemporary bulk or sheet (2D) materials that may be lossy and dispersive. For each linear/nonlinear effect under study we follow a meticulous, step-by-step approach, starting from an accurate model of the physical phenomenon and proceeding to its introduction in the CMT framework all the way to the efficient solution of the resulting system of equations. Our work highlights the merits of CMT as an efficient, accurate, and versatile theoretical tool. We envision that it can serve both as an introductory reference for any reader, as well as a comprehensive handbook on how to incorporate a broad range of linear and nonlinear effects in the CMT framework.

On the Dynamics of the Tavis-Cummings Model

Abstract:The purpose of this paper is to present a comprehensive study of the Tavis-Cummings model from a system-theoretic perspective. A typical form of the Tavis-Cummings model is composed of an ensemble of non-interacting two-level systems (TLSs) that are collectively coupled to a common cavity resonator. The associated quantum linear passive system is proposed, whose canonical form reveals typical features of the Tavis-Cummings model, including $\sqrt{N}$- scaling, dark states, bright states, single-excitation superradiant and subradiant states. The passivity of this linear system is related to the vacuum Rabi mode splitting phenomenon in Tavis-Cummings systems. On the basis of the linear model, an analytic form is presented for the steady-state output state of the Tavis-Cummings model driven by a single-photon state. Master equations are used to study the excitation properties of the Tavis-Cummings model in the multi-excitation scenario. Finally, in terms of the transition matrix for a linear time-varying system, a computational framework is proposed for calculating the state of the Tavis-Cummings model, which is applicable to the multi-excitation case.

Abstract:We develop a theoretical predictive model for an all-pass ring resonator that enables the most complete description of linear coupling regimes. The model is based on eigenmode decomposition of Maxwell's equations with full account of the confined and leaky modes, as opposed to the existing phenomenological methods restricted to the confined modes only. This model enables quantitative description of all-pass ring resonators and provides insights into the physics underlying microring-waveguide coupling. We experimentally validate the model using transmission measurements in the linear regime of aluminium nitride resonators. The developed model is then used to explore the field enhancement in microrings crucial for nonlinear photonic applications.

Theory of nonlinear whispering gallery mode dynamics in a cylindrical microresonator with a radius variation

Abstract:We propose a comprehensive model describing the Kerr nonlinear dynamics of an electric field in a cylindrical microresonator with an effective radius variation, coupled to a radiation source. The proposed system of equations for coupled azimuthal modes takes into account full azimuthal dispersion as well as the influence of the radiation source on the field in the microresonator with the coupling coefficients determined experimentally. The model appears a powerful tool to study nonlinear effects, generation axial-azimuthal modes and optical frequency combs. We illustrate the power of the model with optimization of the coupling point of the light source, getting two order of magnitude improvement for the nonlinear threshold.

Abstract:We consider the Maxwell-Bloch equations that describe the propagation of coherent optical pulses in a resonant two-level medium associated with the self-induced transparency phenomenon. Using degenerate Darboux transformation, the dynamical evolution of coherent multi-optical rogue waves is constructed with different kinds of wave patterns: fundamental-, triangular-, and ring-type patterns. We also discuss the explicit analytical forms of these universal patterns as well as we provide the corresponding numerical data of the obtained optical rogue waves.
Generalized temporal coupled-mode theory for a P T-symmetric optical resonator and Fano resonance in a P T-symmetric photonic heterostructure

Abstract:We have proposed generalized temporal coupled-mode theory for P T-symmetric optical resonator, and on this basis we have explained the Fano resonance in P T-symmetric photonic heterostructure. Our theoretical predictions agree very well with the simulated results obtained by transfer matrix method, which confirms the correctness of our theory. Compared with conventional Fano resonance in optical resonator with time-reversal symmetry, in this Fano resonance the amplitudes of scattering coefficients can be tuned in much larger range, which can be much larger than one, and tend to infinity at singular scattering point, where the rates of dissipation and accumulation are equal to each other and the difference of the phases of the coupling coefficients between output fields and resonant mode is equal to ±π/2. Not only that, the quality factor Q here can be negative out of accumulation, and approaches infinity at this singular scattering point. The phases of reflections jump π in the vicinity of the minima of corresponding amplitudes. We believe that we open a new door to study Fano resonance in non-Hermitian optics and inspire relevant study in other non-Hermitian wave systems.

Abstract:We obtain a time-evolution operator for a forced optomechanical quantum system using Lie algebraic methods when the normalized coupling between the electromagnetic field and a mechanical oscillator, $G/\omega_m$, is not negligible compared to one. Due to the forcing term, the interaction picture Hamiltonian contains the number operator in the exponents, and in order to deal with it, we approximate these exponentials by their average values taken between initial coherent states. Our approximation is justified when we compare our results with the numerical solution of the number of photons, phonons, Mandel parameter, and the Wigner function, showing an excellent agreement.

Abstract:Maxwell's equations can be successfully extended to electromagnetic fields having three complex-valued components rather than their usual three real-valued components. Here the implications of interpreting the imaginary-valued components as extending into time rather than space are explored. The complex-valued Maxwell equations remain consistent with the original Maxwell equations and the experimental results that they predict. Further, the extended equations predict novel phenomena such as the existence of electromagnetic waves that propagate not only through regular space but also through a separate temporal space (time) that is implied by the three imaginary components of the fields. In a vacuum, part of these imaginary valued waves propagates through time at the same rate as an observer stationary in space. While the imaginary valued field components are not directly observable, analysis indicates that they should be indirectly detectable experimentally based on secondary effects that occur under special circumstances. Experimental investigation attempting to falsify or support the existence of complex valued electromagnetic fields extending into time is merited due to the substantial theoretical and practical implications involved.

Abstract:Micro- and nanoresonators, which enable light trapping in small volumes for extended durations, play a crucial role in modern photonics. The optical response of these resonators is determined by their fundamental resonances, known as quasinormal modes (QNMs). Over the past decade, the electromagnetic theory of QNMs has undergone significant development and has now reached a level of maturity that allows its reliable application to numerous contemporary electromagnetic problems. In this review, we explore recent applications of QNM theory for designing and understanding micro and nanoresonators. We highlight why QNMs provide deep physical insights and enhance computational efficiency in scenarios involving mode hybridization and perturbation.

Abstract:Coupled-mode theory (CMT) is a powerful tool for simulating near-harmonic systems. In telecommunications, variations of the theory have been used extensively to study waveguides, both analytically and through numerical modelling. Analogous mathematical techniques to the CMT are also widely used in quantum mechanics. The purpose of this work is to collect different formulations of the CMT and their underlying connections to quantum mechanical techniques, and to showcase their utility in modelling slowly varying waveguides including directional couplers and photonic lanterns. My choice of example waveguides is motivated by the astronomical applications of such devices in starlight nulling, wavefront sensing, and high-resolution spectroscopy. I first provide a brief review of the standard form of the CMT, applicable for waveguides with fixed eigenmodes. Next, I show that the CMT also applies for slowly varying waveguides, and demonstrate the close relation between the CMT and several well-known approximation methods from quantum mechanics, as well as concepts like geometric phase. Finally, I present a verification of my analysis, in the form of the numerical package cbeam.

Abstract:Based on a recently developed Hamiltonian form of Maxwell's equations for dispersive media [A. Raman and S. Fan, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 087401 (2010)], we established a general theoretical framework to study the coupling problems in dispersive photonic systems such as plasmonic materials. Our theory can quantitatively determine the coupling strengths between two dispersive photonic resonators based on ab initio full-wave calculations on realistic structures. The theory is validated by comparing with known rigorous results, where the crucial role of dispersion correction is identified. As an application, we studied the coupled localized surface plasmons in a double-nanorod system. The obtained results agree well with full-wave simulations in most cases, and are helpful to study the "dark modes" which are difficult to detect from conventional simulations.
