Abstract:The Yellow River basin (YRB), as a crucial ecological corridor in the northern part of China, has experienced profound changes in multiple eco-hydrological processes. However, there is still lack of a global view on the variations and causal interactions in the complex hydro-ecological system of YRB. In this study, a set of eco-hydrological variables, regarding water resources (surface water, soil water, groundwater) and ecological environment (vegetation growth, productivity, water use efficiency) are used to represent the main characteristics of the eco-hydrological system in different sub-regions of YRB. The objective of this study is three-fold. Firstly, the individual variation of each eco-hydrological variable was unraveled using trend analysis. Secondly, network analysis was used to analyze the synergistic variations among variables. Finally, an advanced causal discovery tool incorporating prior knowledge was used to investigate the potential causal interactions in eco-hydrological system. The results indicate the decrease of terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSA) in most parts of the YRB, which is mostly due to the substantial depletions in ground water. The vegetation growth and productivity have noticed prominent increasing trends in YRB, and such increase in the source region is largely due to the warmer climate condition and in the middle reaches is mainly because of the large-scale vegetation restoration. However, the ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) is not very optimistic, especially in the source region. The causal discovery method captures the inhibitory effect of evapotranspiration on WUE in the upper and some parts of the middle reaches of YRB. Our study provides a new perspective to recognize the complicated eco-hydrological conditions and their variations in YRB during 2001-2019, as well as the potential mechanisms driving these variations.

Abstract:Climate change has profoundly impacted the Earth's atmospheric system and altered the terrestrial water cycle, reshaping the spatiotemporal patterns of hydrological extremes, including floods and droughts. This review aims to summarize recent advancements in understanding the response of hydrological extremes to climate change in both past and future. Historical floods driven by heavy rainfall are increasing, while those dominated by snow processes are decreasing, resulting in non-significant changes on a global average. Previously overestimated droughts, due to inaccuracies in hydrological modules within offline diagnostic metrics, have been corrected by advanced modeling results, also revealing minimal historical changes on a global scale. Earth system simulations project concurrent increases in both floods and droughts under future climate change scenarios. Climate change influences hydrological extremes across various scales, with diverse spatial distributions and underlying mechanisms. Decision-makers should integrate multi-source information to enhance the monitoring and adaptation of hydrological extremes, particularly focusing on abrupt drought-flood alternations.

Abstract:The Yangtze River Basin is the largest basin in China, covering an area of 1.8 million square kilometers and possessing very abundant water resources. The water resources in this basin play a crucial role in the ecological environment and socio-economic development. Understanding the future hydrological changes in the Yangtze River Basin is crucial for China's water resource allocation and planning. However, many studies have indicated that, under the influence of complex climate change and intense human activities, the hydrological cycle in the Yangtze River Basin has become more complex. This research utilized a distributed hydrological model to investigate the hydrological changes in the Yangtze River Basin during the historical period (1961-2019) and the future period (2021-2100). Historical observed data and CMIP6 data are used to drive the model. Meanwhile, machine learning methods are applied to process the output results of the hydrological model, simulating the impact of human activities within the corresponding regions. The results indicate that, during the historical period, machine learning methods could enhance the simulation accuracy of areas which are significantly influenced by human activities. The historical data show that, despite an upward trend in precipitation in the historical period, the runoff at the main hydrological stations of the Yangtze River mainstream continues to decline due to increasing evapotranspiration. Under future conditions, the total runoff in the Yangtze River Basin will further decrease compared with historical runoff, intensifying water resource risks within the basin and posing new challenges for water resource management.

Abstract:Driven by the need for water security in a changing environment, research on the water cycle and water resources has attracted intensive research in the last few decades. This chapter reviews the progresses in terrestrial water cycle and water resources research, including the state-of-art understanding of change in the water cycle, improvement of prediction capacities in hydrology and water resources, and achieving water security. The grand challenges and perspectives for the near future are discussed. In particular, we highlight the challenges to address interactions among multiple factors in the water system and to manage the water related risks.

Abstract:On the basis of identifying water problems at home and abroad,this paper analyses the evolution pattern of the natural-artificial dualistic water cycle,clarifies the interactions among hydrological processes,and associated hydrochemistry,water ecology and flow-sediment processes,as well as preliminarily describes the subject system constitution of modern hydrology and water resources. Based on describing the development trend of international hydrology and water resources and hot issues and frontier problems,and combining with research status of hydrology and water resources and practical demands on solving water problems in China,we discuss the subject system of hydrology and water resources in China,and analyze the important research directions. Under the influences of environmental change and strong human activities,water cycle shows obviously the natural-artificial characters on all aspects of dynamics,structure and parameters. Modern hydrology and water resources research is changing from traditional methodology of decomposition and refinement to present emphasis on integration and crossover,and from single-hydrological-variable oriented research to integrated hydrological processes oriented research. Prototype observation and numerical simulation become a critical study method in these fields. Hydrology and water resources research needs further strengthening on the basic research of mechanism identification and quantitative simulation of the water cycle and associated processes,improving on the application basic research of assessment,allocation and regulation of water resources,water right distribution,and water pricing theory and technology,to serve water-saving society establishment,water environmental protection and ecological construction,integrated water resources management,disaster prevention and mitigation and emergency treatment,drinking water safety,hydraulic engineering construction,and other practical needs.

Abstract:The global climate change and intensification of human activities in recent decades have made profound changes in hydrological cycle processes and water resources, and produced serious water problems and water crisis in many areas. The main reason is that the driving force of water cycle, the structure of water cycle, and the parameters of water cycle have dualistically evolved under the influence of human activities, and consequently resulted in reduction of runoff water resources, water pollution, and degradation of natural ecosystems. In order to realize of the safety aim of water supply, water environment, and ecosystem in area which is short of water resources, scientific regulation of water resources must take basin water cycle system as the unified base, and the first scientific basis is the awareness of the internal mechanism and law of water cycle evolution under highly intensive human activities. This article discussed four aspects of dualistic water cycle evolution, including its history in China, its theory, its characteristics in a typical basin, and its description of integral structure, along with the conceptive model system to quantify it. This article can be a reference to the basic cognition of water cycle evolution in a changing environment, and the study of water resources reduction reasons in the contemporary age.

Abstract:The impact of human activities on hydrological processes becomes remarkable in Anthropocene,and many problems go beyond the scope of traditional hydrology.As two important sub-disciplines in hydrology that focus on human interventions,socio-hydrology and urban hydrology have attracted increasingly more attention.With the strengthened interactions between human and water,hydrological and human systems are becoming tightly coupled,and socio-hydrology emerged to investigate the feedbacks between the two systems and their coevolution processes.Cities are places where human activities and the natural system interact most intensively,and the hydrological processes in urban regions are becoming more complicated,therefore urban hydrology has been developed.The two disciplines are of great importance for the medium-and long-term planning and management of water resources and related socioeconomic development,as well as for guiding urban planning and construction,enhancing urban water security,and improving urban water environment.This article reviewed the patterns of development and characteristics of research of the two disciplines.It also analyzed the research status and development trends,including the study of social factors,case study in representative basins,comparative study of different cases,and model simulation in socio-hydrology,as well as the impact of urbanization on precipitation and flood,and the response relationship between urbanization and environment in urban hydrology.Key study areas in the two disciplines are discussed.For socio-hydrology,the key study areas include constitutive relation study,comparative socio-hydrology,and interdisciplinary study while the key study areas of urban hydrology include the mechanism and simulation of urbanization impact on hydrological processes,monitoring and forecasting technology of urban rainstorm and flood,and urban rain-flood management and resource utilization technology.

Abstract:Water is a naturally circulating resource that is constantly recharged. Therefore, even though the stocks of water in natural and artificial reservoirs are helpful to increase the available water resources for human society, the flow of water should be the main focus in water resources assessments. The climate system puts an upper limit on the circulation rate of available renewable freshwater resources (RFWR). Although current global withdrawals are well below the upper limit, more than two billion people live in highly water-stressed areas because of the uneven distribution of RFWR in time and space. Climate change is expected to accelerate water cycles and thereby increase the available RFWR. This would slow down the increase of people living under water stress; however, changes in seasonal patterns and increasing probability of extreme events may offset this effect. Reducing current vulnerability will be the first step to prepare for such anticipated changes.

Abstract:The authors in this chapter have made integrated analyses in driving forces, states and human responses in water resource, water environment, water ecosystems and water security in Taihu Lake Basin, East China. The results have shown that landuse, water resource exploitation and environmental impacts from engineering and management activities as key driving forces have caused great degradations of wetland ecosystems in the basin, so the two critical human responses to these negative changes are to use ecological engineering measures other than typical environmental engineering and life-cycle-oriented ecological management other than typical end-of-pipe management so as to maintain sustainable human-water interactions for wetland ecosystem management of the basin.
Perspective Impact on Water Environment and Hydrological Regime Owing to Climate Change: A Review

Abstract:This study summarizes reviews on climate change’s impact on the water environment and hydrological regime. The results indicate a strong relationship between the climatological parameters and hydrological patterns. This relationship can be determined in two steps: (1) define the variations in climatological factors, particularly temperature and precipitation, and (2) measure the variations in runoff and inflows to streams and river systems using different statistical and global climate modeling approaches. It is evident that the increasing global temperatures have significant positive effects on runoff variations and evapotranspiration. Similarly, the increase in temperature has speeded up the melting of glaciers and ice on hilly terrains. This is causing frequent flash floods and a gradual rise in the sea level. These factors have altered the timing of stream flow into rivers. Furthermore, the accumulation of greenhouse gases, variations in precipitation and runoff, and sea-level rise have significantly affected freshwater quality. These effects are likely to continue if timely mitigation and adaptation measures are not adopted.

Abstract:The hydrosphere is the sum of all water on Earth and the water cycle that distributes it around the planet. Earth is unique in the solar system for its abundant surface waters. The hydrosphere comprises the combined mass of water that occurs on or near Earth’s surface. It includes oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams. Because it covers about 71 percent of Earth’s surface area, the hydrosphere plays a vital role in sustaining communities of water-inhabiting plants and animals. Many researchers stated that the human contributions to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere are warming the earth's surface a process that is projected to increase the evaporation of surface water and accelerate the hydrologic cycle. In turn, a warmer atmosphere can hold more water vapor. When the water body of the earth evaporates, the surroundings become cooled, as it condenses, water releases energy and warms its surroundings, it hydrates life on the planet and plays a role in the transfer of energy from terrestrial to aquatic systems. Therefore, according to the review, different authors from many countries analyzed that the main source of future global change is the warming of the hydrosphere.

Abstract:Climate change and extreme weather events (such as droughts, heatwaves, rainstorms and floods) pose serious challenges for water management, in terms of both water resources availability and water quality. However, the responses and mechanisms of river water quality under more frequent and intense hydroclimatic extremes are not well understood. In this Review, we assess the impacts of hydroclimatic extremes and multidecadal climate change on a wide range of water quality constituents to identify the key responses and driving mechanisms. Comparison of 965 case studies indicates that river water quality generally deteriorates under droughts and heatwaves (68% of compiled cases), rainstorms and floods (51%) and under long-term climate change (56%). Also improvements or mixed responses are reported owing to counteracting mechanisms, for example, increased pollutant mobilization versus dilution during flood events. River water quality responses under multidecadal climate change are driven by hydrological alterations, rises in water and soil temperatures and interactions among hydroclimatic, land use and human drivers. These complex interactions synergistically influence the sources, transport and transformation of all water quality constituents. Future research must target tools, techniques and models that support the design of robust water quality management strategies, in a world that is facing more frequent and severe hydroclimatic extremes. Maintaining good water quality is vital for healthy ecosystems and human water use, yet water quality responses to hydroclimatic extremes and changing climate are poorly understood. This Review explores river water quality under climate change and extremes.

Abstract:Endorheic basins around the world are suffering from water and ecosystem crisis. To pursue sustainable development, quantifying the hydrological cycle is fundamentally important. However, knowledge gaps exist in how climate change and human activities influence the hydrological cycle in endorheic basins. We used an integrated ecohydrological model, in combination with systematic observations, to analyze the hydrological cycle in the Heihe River Basin, a typical endorheic basin in arid region of China. The water budget was closed for different landscapes, river channel sections, and irrigation districts of the basin from 2001 to 2012. The results showed that climate warming, which has led to greater precipitation, snowmelt, glacier melt, and runoff, is a favorable factor in alleviating water scarcity. Human activities, including ecological water diversion, cropland expansion, and groundwater overexploitation, have both positive and negative effects. The natural oasis ecosystem has been restored considerably, but the overuse of water in midstream and the use of environmental flow for agriculture in downstream have exacerbated the water stress, resulting in unfavorable changes in surface-ground water interactions and raising concerns regarding how to fairly allocate water resources. Our results suggest that the water resource management in the region should be adjusted to adapt to a changing hydrological cycle, cropland area must be reduced, and the abstraction of groundwater must be controlled. To foster long-term benefits, water conflicts should be handled from a broad socioeconomic perspective. The findings can provide useful information on endorheic basins to policy makers and stakeholders around the world.

Abstract:Understanding the role of anthropogenic activities in the hydrological cycle is critical to support sustainable water management for the Yangtze River Basin (YRB), which experiences extensive dam operation, irrigation and water withdrawal. However, this remains challenging due to insufficient accuracies of existing process‐based models for fully depicting anthropogenic activities as part of the hydrological cycle. To this end, this study enhances a national‐scale coupled land surface‐hydrologic‐hydrodynamic model (CLHMS) with a dynamic irrigation scheme for distinct crops, an extended reservoir operation scheme incorporating both water storage anomalies and water demand anomalies, and a cost‐function‐based approach to link water demands with reservoir operation. The enhanced model is extensively validated against historical streamflow, water storage of 90 reservoirs, and irrigation water withdrawal in the YRB, and the water level and storage of the Poyang Lake (PYL). By setting up controlled experiments in the YRB, we show that the streamflow decreases by 2%–6% due to irrigation and water withdrawal, and manifests an attenuated seasonality due to reservoir operation. At the basin scale, the increasing trend of extreme flood peaks exhibits a reversal under human activities, with the flood mitigation effect of irrigation and water withdrawal accounting for up to 50% of that of reservoir operation. The hydrodynamics of the PYL also exhibits considerable human‐induced alterations, with a 1.79 m‐decrease in the water level at the end of flood season. Our study sheds light on quantifying anthropogenic hydrologic impacts at basin scales, with important implications for understanding the co‐evolution between anthropogenic activities and the hydrological cycle.

Abstract:Background: The most fundamental natural resource is water. The hydrological cycle, which produces water, connects interactions between the Earth's four major domains and is influenced significantly by human activities and socioeconomic development. This research objective is to determine the correlation of Human Activities due to hydrological cycle and water resource which related on climate change. Methods: This research using the literature method. There are 2 concept approaches used in this journal, the conceptual framework and socio-hydrological model framework. Findings: show when the system is unstable, the water supply system encounter water deficit, meanwhile society still can fulfil their demand of water through SAL (capital investment). Hence, there are several external factors in relation of the water supply system. Conclusion: The scarcity of water resources is affecting many major. The involvement of climate change on present and future is importantly need to consider. The target of sustainable groundwater resource is possible to achieve after understand how to control some factors related such as physiography, geology, and hydrological cycle. Beside of it, the management will return to community to form the oriented strategies on sustainable water resource on protection and coherent utilization.
Hydrological trends during the past 50 years in the Yangtze River basin.

Abstract:The hydrological cycle has been highly influenced by climate changes and human activities, and it is significant to analyse the hydrological trends that occurred in past decades in order to understand past changes and predict future trends. Water resources in the Yangtze River basin have been paid more attention, especially for the Three Gorges Dam and the South-to-North water diversion project. Based on the climate data from 180 stations in the Yangtze River basin, it was found that pan evaporation showed a decreasing trend as a whole during the past 50 years with the increasing in air temperature, indicating that the evaporation paradox existed in this basin. At the same time, actual evaporation estimated by water balance decreased with increasing precipitation. Based on the Budyko curve, it can be concluded that the decrease in actual evaporation was caused by the decrease in energy.

Abstract:Hydrology is the science that describes the continuous movement of water,the related biogeochemical and geophysical processes,and their interactions with the environment.Hydrology research has evolved from experience-based to theories,from single process to complex systems,and from qualitative interpretations to quantitative models.The progress and evolution of hydrology has been intimately intertwined with the scientific and technological progresses and socioeconomic development,which creates many branches and interdisciplinary areas of hydrology,such as ecohydrology,hydrometeorology,cryosphere hydrology,hydrologic remote sensing,isotope hydrology,urban hydrology,and socio-hydrology.Hydrology research has made notable progress in the fields of multi-scale observations,coupled land surface-hydrology-society modeling,and multisource data and model assimilation techniques,which further expands the connotation of hydrological study.In the future,hydrology research will focus on the characteristics and mechanism of the changes of water cycle,prediction of the changes of water cycle,and natural and social impact assessment of the changes of water cycle,in order to offer sustainable solutions to water security.In summary,the research paradigm of hydrology would shift from the traditionally self-focused approaches to the emerging integrated approaches that focus on all the water-related processes across multiple scales and sectors in the earth system.

Abstract:In recent decades, climate change and other anthropogenic activities have substantially affected groundwater systems worldwide. These impacts include changes in groundwater recharge, discharge, flow, storage, and distribution. Climate-induced shifts are evident in altered recharge rates, greater groundwater contribution to streamflow in glacierized catchments, and enhanced groundwater flow in permafrost areas. Direct anthropogenic changes include groundwater withdrawal and injection, regional flow regime modification, water table and storage alterations, and redistribution of embedded groundwater in foods globally. Notably, groundwater extraction contributes to sea level rise, increasing the risk of groundwater inundation in coastal areas. The role of groundwater in the global water cycle is becoming more dynamic and complex. Quantifying these changes is essential to ensure sustainable supply of fresh groundwater resources for people and ecosystems.

Abstract:Abstract Globally there is already a lot of pressure on water resources because of climate change, economic development, as well as an increasing global populace. Many rivers originate in the mountains, where snowfall fluctuations and the global climate’s inherent unpredictability affect the hydrological processes. Climate change sensitivity has been recognized in recent years and would affect hydropower, such as humidity, cloudiness, and precipitation, that are considered; global warming emerges as one of the most important contributors to climate change. The Yangtze River supports rich biodiversity and provides important ecosystem services for human survival and development. In addition, climate changes, particularly short-term and long-term precipitation and temperature fluctuations, influence the snow regime and the hydrological development of river flow response at the basin and sub-basin scales. More precise this review focused to understand the hydropower potential, freshwater fisheries, and hydrological response of snow dynamics in snow-dominated basins.
