Abstract:Solvent strongly influences the catalytic performance in titanosilicates/H 2 O 2 system, however, its role remains unclear to date. Based on the kinetic results of H 2 O 2 activation catalyzed by various titanosilicates in different solvents, an isokinetic compensation effect was observed, indicating that solvent participates in H 2 O 2 activation process for forming Ti-OOH species. Isotopic labeled IR spectra results verify that the role of solvent is the mediator to promote the proton transfer on H 2 O 2 activation and the proton donation ability (acidity) of protic solvent (ROH/H 2 O) has a positive relationship with the catalytic performance. We compare the catalytic activities for 1-hexene epoxidation with a series of TS-1 catalysts which contains a range of densities of Ti(OSi) 3 OH species along with constant total Ti contents and reveal that the solvent effect is closely related to Ti active sites of titanosilicates. For Ti(OSi) 4 active sites, ROH is the mediator, and CH 3 OH with the highest acidity is the best solvent. For Ti(OSi) 3 OH active sites, H 2 O is the mediator, and the weak hydrogen bond of H 2 O leads to the high acidity of H 2 O molecules, promoting the proton transfer. Solvent influences the catalytic performance by changing the hydrogen bond of H 2 O molecules, and strong nucleophilic ability of solvent means a strong hydrogen bond with H 2 O, so CH 3 CN with the weakest nucleophilic ability is the best solvent for Ti(OSi) 3 OH sites. These results prove experimentally that solvent promotes the catalytic performance of titanosilicates by assisting the proton transfer on H 2 O 2 activation catalyzed by different Ti active sites, which helps to guide the rational design of proper solvent.
