Abstract:Most widely used piezoelectric ceramics are based on Pb(Zr,Ti)O 3 (PZT) composition which has adverse environmental and health effects due to its high lead content. Environmental and safety concerns with respect to the utilization, recycling, and disposal of lead-based piezoelectric ceramics have induced a new surge in developing lead-free piezoelectric ceramics. Among all the lead-free ceramics, (K,Na)NbO 3 (KNN) has drawn increasing attention because of its well-balanced piezoelectric properties and better environmental compatibility. On basis of the author’s work, this review summarizes the progress that has been made in recent years on development of KNN-based piezoelectric ceramics, including crystallographic structure and phase transition analysis, pressurized solid-state sintering as well as liquid-phase-assisted sintering process, and poling treatment for property enhancement. All in all, KNN is a promising lead-free system, but more research is still required both from academic and industrial interests.

Abstract:0.95 (Li0.04Na0.48K0.48)(Nb0.94Sb0.06)O-3-0.05(Ba0.5Ca0.5)(Zr0.5Hf0.5)O-3 (LNKNbS-BCZH) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the solid-state reaction method via the two-step sintering process. Via composition designing pure perovskite LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics are synthesized, which present complex coexistence of orthogonal and tetragonal ferroelectric phases in rhombohedral matrix and high densification depending greatly on the two-step sintering conditions. Due to the addition of some metal elements and the second component BCZH, there appear dielectric peak at Curie temperature T-c/T-m of similar to 200 degrees C and dielectric shoulder around room temperature, and the LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics approach to normal ferroelectrics with some diffused phase transition characteristic. Excellent ferroelectricity and piezoelectricity are obtained via composition designing and two-step sintering, in which the LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics sintered at 1180 degrees C for 45 min and 1050 degrees C for 8 h exhibit the largest piezoelectric constant of 232 pC/N, which can be increased further by room-temperature aging and re-poling. The safe working temperature for piezoelectric applications of the LNKNbS-BCZH ceramics should be below 100 degrees C. (C) 2019 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:New (1–x)K0.48Na0.52NbO3–xBi(Zn0.5Zr0.5)O3 [(1–x)KNN–xBZZ] lead-free piezoceramics were prepared by the conventional solid state method. Effects of BZZ content on their phase structure, microstructure, and electrical properties were studied. As the BZZ content increases, both TO–T and TC gradually decrease, the dielectric constant increases and the dielectric loss almost decreases. The ceramic with x = 0.0075 has enhanced ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties (e.g., d33 ∼ 156 pC/N, kp ∼ 0.44, Pr ∼ 27.5 μC/cm2, and Ec ∼ 11.2 kV/cm). The underlying physical mechanism for enhanced electrical properties has been given. As a result, adding BZZ is an effective way to enhance the piezoelectric properties of KNN ceramics.

Abstract:As legislative restrictions on the use of hazardous lead-containing materials are approaching and the demand for environmentally-benign piezoelectric materials continues to grow, there is an urgent need for viable lead-free piezoelectric alternatives. (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based ceramics are environmentally-friendly, however, their piezoelectric properties still fall short of those of commercial lead-based ceramics. Herein, we report an alternative KNN material with the composition of (100-x)(K0.49Na0.49Li0.02)(Nb0.8Ta0.2)O3-xBaZrO3 + 2 wt % MnO ceramics prepared by a conventional solid-reaction approach. The addition of BaZrO3 produces finer domains and thus improves the piezoelectric and dielectric properties. MnO acts as sintering aid to reduce alkaline elements volatilization by lowering the sintering temperature. The mitigated volatilization of alkaline elements significantly reduces the concentration of oxygen vacancies, and thus contributes to enhanced piezoelectric properties. An optimal normalized strain ( d 33 * ) up to 476 p.m./V at room temperature with a low driving electric field of 1.5 kV/mm is achieved at x = 4. More encouragingly, the ceramics also possess excellent temperature stability and fatigue resistance.

Abstract:With the capability of interconversion between electrical and mechanical energy, piezoelectric materials have been revolutionized by the implementation of perovskite-piezoelectric-ceramic-based studies over 70 years. In particular, the market of piezoelectric ceramics has been dominated by lead zirconate titanate for decades. Nowadays, the research on piezoelectric ceramics is largely driven by cutting-edge technological demand as well as the consideration of a sustainable society. Hence, environmental-friendly lead-free piezoelectric materials have emerged to replace lead-based Pb(Zr,Ti)O-3 (PZT) compositions. Owing to the inherent high mechanical quality factor (Q(m)) and low energy loss, (Li,Na)NbO3 (LNN) materials have recently drawn increasing attention and brought advantages to high-power piezoelectric applications. Although the crystallographic structures of LNN materials were intensively investigated for decades, the technical strategies for electrical performance are still limited. As a result, the property enhancement appears to have approached a plateau. This review traces the progress in the development of LNN materials, starting from the polymorphism in terms of the crystal structures, phase transitions, and local structural distortions. Then, the key milestone works on the functional tunability of LNN are reviewed with emphasis on involved engineering approaches. The exceptional performance at a large vibration velocity makes LNN ceramics promising for high-power applications, such as ultrasonic welding (UW) and ultrasonic osteotomes (UOs). The remaining challenges and some strategic insights for synergistically engineering the functional performance of LNN piezoceramics are also suggested.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials are an important functional material in the modem world because they are capable of converting electrical energy into mechanical energy and vice versa. Lead-free potassium sodium niobate (KNN)-based piezoelectric materials have been intensively researched in the past decade for only one purpose: to replace the less environmentally friendly lead-based piezoelectric materials in commercial products. In this review, the historical research evolution of KNN-based piezoelectric ceramics is highlighted. Meanwhile, to evaluate the technology transfer status, we emphasize on the analysis of the patents applied within the past five years, as well as certain practical applications of KNN-based materials. This paper concludes with the prediction of remaining challenges and opportunities for adopting the lead-free KNN-based piezoelectric ceramics in practical applications.

Abstract:(1-x)(Li0.02Na0.48K0.48Ag0.02)(Nb0.95Sb0.05)O-3-x(Ba0.4Bi0.3Na0.3)ZrO3 (LNKANbS-xBBiNZ, x = 0.04, 0.045, 0.05, 0.055 and 0.06) lead-free piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional solid-state reaction method via the two-step sintering route. The effects of the content of BBiNZ on electrical properties and microstructural morphology of the LNKANbS-xBBiNZ ceramics were studied systematically. The designing of forming rhombohedral-tetragonal phase boundary in the LNKANbS-xBBiNZ system is confirmed by XRD Rietveld refinement and Raman spectroscopy, whose phase proportion is affected greatly by the BBiNZ amount. The LNKANbS-xBBiNZ ceramics exhibit complicated dielectric behavior, whose dielectric response characteristic can be fitted by the quadratic law and the Curie-Weiss law, and both having some deviation. The high-temperature conductivity of the LNKANbS-0.045BBiNZ ceramics is controlled by oxygen vacancies detected by both conductive activation energy and relaxation activation energy fitting. The LNKANbS-0.045BBiNZ ceramics exhibit excellent electrical properties, correlating with appropriate R-T phase composition proportion and improved densification and microstructural homogeneity obtained by adjusting the BBiNZ content and using the two-step sintering method.

Abstract:Environment-friendly lead-free piezoelectric ceramics have been studied extensively in the past decade with great progress particularly in systems based on a niobate perovskite compound formulated as (K, Na)NbO3 (abbreviated as KNN). A comprehensive review on the latest development of KNN-based piezoelectric ceramics is presented in this article, including the phase structure, property enhancement approaches, and sintering processes as well as the status of some promising applications. The phase structure of KNN was reexamined and associated with the effect of chemical modification on its tetragonal-to-orthorhombic transition. Then, a special focus is placed on the temperature dependence of piezoelectric properties of KNN-based ceramics, followed by reviewing the recent approaches devoted to the temperature-stability enhancement. The processing fundamentals related to the sintering of KNN-based ceramics are also presented with an emphasis on compositional and microstructural control. Finally, this review introduces several industrial attempts of traditional piezoceramic products using KNN-based ceramics and the studies on some promising application in authors' laboratory.

Abstract:The growing environmental concerns have been pushing the development of viable green alternatives for lead-based piezoceramics to be one of the priorities in functional ceramic materials. A polymorphic phase transition has been utilized to enhance piezoelectric properties of lead-free (K, Na)NbO3-based materials, accepting the drawbacks of high temperature and cycling instabilities. Here, we present that CaZrO3-modified (K, Na)NbO3 piezoceramics not only possess excellent performance at ambient conditions benefiting from nanodomain engineering, but also exhibit superior stability against temperature fluctuation and electrical fatigue cycling. It was found that the piezoelectric coefficient d(33) is temperature independent under 4kV/mm, which can be attributed to enhanced thermal stability of electric field engineered domain configuration; whereas the electric field induced strain exhibits excellent fatigue resistance up to 10(7) sesquipolar cycles. These findings render the current material an unprecedented opportunity for actuator applications demanding improved thermal and cycling reliabilities.
Niobate-based lead-free piezoceramics: a diffused phase transition boundary leading to temperature-insensitive high piezoelectric voltage coefficients

Abstract:One of the key remaining challenges for the most promising Pb-free (K, Na) NbO3 (KNN) piezoelectrics is how to improve the temperature stability of piezoelectric voltage coefficients, which is vital to promoting their practical applications. This study proposes an effective approach to develop highly piezoelectric KNN-based ceramics with temperature-insensitive piezoelectric voltage coefficients (d(33)), which is also called direct piezo-coefficient, by broadening the boundaries from tetragonal to orthorhombic and then to rhombohedral phases. The Li-doped KNN ceramics modified with BaZrO3 and (Bi, Zr)TiO3 exhibit a high d(33) up to 330 pC N-1, whose variation is limited to +/- 10% in a common application temperature range (25-100 degrees C), when their composition is optimized for strengthening their temperature stability. A high d(33) up to 380 pC N-1 with a larger variation (<20%) but in a wider temperature range (25-200 degrees C) was also available in the present materials possessing a large planar electromechanical coupling coefficient k(p) up to 0.54 and a high Curie temperature of 4260 degrees C as well as high strength associated with high relative density. Piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) studies reveal that the good piezoelectric response could be related to the easier domain reorientation and domain wall motion. The present results validated that our approach based on phase transition boundary engineering should be an effective strategy for further development of high-performance lead-free piezoceramics towards the demand for industrial applications.

Abstract:A new lead-free piezoelectric system of (1 − x)(K0.48Na0.52+y)(Nb0.95Sb0.05)O3–x(Bi0.8La0.2)0.5(Na0.8Li0.2)0.5ZrO3 [(1 − x)KNayNS–xBLNLZ] were prepared using the conventional solid-state sintering method. The effects of BLNLZ content and Na excess on the microstructure and electrical properties of the ceramics were investigated. It was found that an enhanced dielectric, ferroelectric, and piezoelectric behavior has been attained by successfully constructing the rhombohedral–tetragonal phase boundary in the ceramics with x = 0.04. The small Na excess can greatly improve ceramics properties due to the increase of abnormal grain growth caused by the formation of a small amount of liquid phase. As a result, the ceramic with x = 0.04 and y = 0.004 has optimum electrical properties of d33 ~470 pC/N, kp ~50 %, 2Pr ~32.3 μC/cm2, and 2Ec ~14.2 kV/cm, together with a Curie temperature of ~210 °C. The giant d33 of this ceramic system could be comparable with the most of the reported results about the alkali niobate-based lead-free piezoceramics. It was believed that such an excellent piezoelectricity of this material system will promote the development of KNN-based lead-free ceramics.

Abstract:0.96(K0.48Na0.52)(Nb1−xTax)O3–0.04(Bi0.5Ag0.5)ZrO3 lead-free ceramics were fabricated by solid-state reaction method. Because of the sensitive energy state in the coexisting phase structure, the addition of Ta5+ caused a palpable phase transformation from orthorhombic to tetragonal. At the same time, doping with (Bi0.5Ag0.5)ZrO3 could have effectively promoted densification and continued to enhance the piezoelectric and dielectric properties. Enhanced dielectric/ferroelectric properties were achieved for the ceramics which has a composition of (x = 0.15), and the ceramics expressed a high d33 of ∼ 373 pC/N with a TC of ∼ 255 °C. We believe that to design a binary phase system is a valid method to attain both large d33 and high TC in (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based lead-free ceramics.
High-stability Quinary Lead-Based Piezoelectric Ceramics with High Piezoelectric Properties

Abstract:Piezoceramics with the formula Pb0.93Sr0.06Ba0.01(Mg1/3Nb2/3)(0.035)(Ni1/3Nb2/3)(0.2) (Sb1/2Nb1/2)(0.015)(ZrxTi1-x)(0.75)O-3 + 0.5 wt. % Li2CO3, where x = 0.51, 0.50, 0.49, 0.48, 0.47, and 0.46, have been made using the one-step solid-state method. The phase structure and electrical properties were systematically investigated in the quinary system. Here, the crystalline structure transformed gradually from the rhombohedral to tetragonal phase with decreasing Zr content. More importantly, the effective piezoelectric coefficient d(33)* of the ceramics demonstrates an excellent thermal stability below the Curie temperature. Meanwhile, piezoelectric ceramics with x = 0.49 exhibited the extraordinary electrical properties near the morphotropic phase boundary. A huge piezoelectric coefficient d(33 )= 853 pC/N, high Curie temperature T-C = 152 degrees C, and the electromechanical coupling coefficients k(p )= 67.4%, k(t )= 63.5%, and k(33 )= 67.4% were obtained at the composition of x = 0.49, which may lead a promising future for the transducer applications.

Abstract:The field of lead-free piezoceramics, which aims to replace lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and related perovskite materials, has been vibrant for almost 15 years. Once the science in this field attained a certain stage of maturity, materials with properties better than PZT have appeared, and the first products are about to reach the marketplace. This article describes the three most promising lead-free piezoceramics currently under discussion to replace PZT. Each has a pronounced property profile geared for specific applications. Guidelines for directions for fundamental future research on as well as technology transfer to industry of lead-free piezoceramics are provided.

Abstract:Environment-friendly (K,Na)NbO3-based (KNN) lead-free piezoelectric materials have been studied extensively in the past decade. Significant progress has been made in this field, manifesting competitive piezoelectric performance with that of lead-based, for specific application scenarios. Further understanding of the relationship between high piezoelectricity and microstructure or more precisely, ferroelectric domain structure, domain wall pinning effect, domain wall conduction and local polarization switching underpins the continuous advancement of piezoelectric properties, with the help of piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). In this review, we will present the fundamentals of scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and its cardinal derivative in piezoelectric and ferroelectric world, PFM. Some representative operational modes and a variety of recent applications in KNN-based piezoelectric materials are presented. We expect that PFM and its combination with some newly developed technology will continue to provide great insight into piezoelectric materials and structures, and will play a valuable role in promoting the performance to a new level.

Abstract:Lead-based piezoelectric materials are currently facing global restrictions due to their lead toxicity. Thus it is urgent to develop lead-free substitutes with high piezoelectricity and temperature stability, among which, potassium-sodium niobate [(K, Na) NbO3, KNN] has the most potential. It is very difficult to simultaneously achieve high piezoelectric performance and reliable stability in KNN-based systems. In particular, the structural/physical origin for their high piezoelectricity is still unclear, which hinders property optimization. Here we report the achievement of high temperature stability (less than 10% variation for electric field-induced strain from 27 8C to808 degrees C), good fatigue properties (stable up to 106 cycles) as well as an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)) of 525 pC N-1 in (1 -x)(K1-yNay)(Nb1-zSbz) O-3-xBi(0.5)(Na1-wKw) 0.5HfO3 (KNNS-BNKH) ceramics through manipulating the rhombohedral-tetragonal (R-T) phase boundary. The structural origin of their high piezoelectric performance can be attributed to a hierarchical nanodomain architecture, where the local structure inside nanodomains comprises R and T nanotwins. The physical origin can be attributed to low domain wall energy and nearly vanishing polarization anisotropy, facilitating easy polarization rotation among different states. We believe that the new breakthrough will open a window for the practical applications of KNN-based ceramics.
Improving the piezoelectric strain and anti-reduction properties of K0.5Na0.5NbO3-based ceramics sintered in a reducing atmosphere

Abstract:Lead-free 0.945K(0.48)Na(0.52)Nb(0.96)Ta(0.04)O(3)-0.055BaZrO(3) + 6%MnO + xZrO(2) piezoelectric ceramics sintered in a reducing atmosphere were prepared by conventional solid-state reaction methods. The use of the ZrO2 dopant resulted in an increase in the rhombohedral (R) phase in orthorhombic (O)/R coexisting phases. Nonstoichiometric ZrO2 dopant addition could effectively improve the anti-reduction properties of KNN-based ceramics via controlling the oxygen vacancy concentration. In particular, 2% mol nonstoichometric ZrO2 dopant addition could improve the activation energy of the grain boundary (E-gb) via increasing the grain boundary thickness. The addition of the ZrO2 dopant could improve the fatigue resistance of the unipolar piezoelectric strain of 0.945K(0.48)Na(0.52)Nb(0.96)Ta(0.04)O(3)-0.055BaZrO(3 )+ 6%MnO ceramics. The optimum inverse piezoelectric coefficient d(33)* of ceramics at x = 0.01 reached up to similar to 465 pm V-1 at a low driving electric field E of 20 kV cm(-1) at room temperature, and the temperature stability of d(33)* reached 155 degrees C. After 10(6) unipolar fatigue cycles, the beta value of 0.945KNNT-0.055BZ + 6Mn + xZr ceramics could be preserved to more than 86%. The 0.945K(0.)(48)Na(0.)(52)Nb(0.)(96)Ta(0.)(04)O(3)-0.055BaZrO(3) + 6% MnO + xZrO(2) ceramic is a lead-free material with great potential to be applied in the fabrication of multilayer ceramic actuators with Ni inner electrodes in the future.
