Abstract:Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs), renowned for their high theoretical energy density, safety, cost-effectiveness and eco-friendliness, offer immense potential in the realm of energy storage and conversion, finding applications in renewable energy and portable devices. However, the development of AZIBs still faces several challenges related to the electrochemical behavior of zinc anodes in aqueous electrolytes, primarily zinc dendrite formation, which emphasize the critical need for a fundamental understanding of the interfacial phenomena between the electrode and electrolyte. This review focuses on the three models: the electric double layer (EDL) model, the solvation structure model, and the Zn/electrolyte interface model. They guide the design of the electrolyte system in AZIBs. These models provide a comprehensive understanding of the interactions between the electrode, electrolyte, and the solvated ions in the system. By optimizing the salt types, salt concentrations, solvents and additives based on these models, it is possible to enhance the performance of AZIBs, including their energy density, cycle life, and safety. The review also highlights recent research progress in electrolyte modification of AZIBs for understanding battery behavior, along with perspectives for the direction of further investigations.

Abstract:With outstanding safety and economic benefits, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) represent a highly promising energy system. As the "blood" of ZIBs, the solid (electrode)/liquid (electrolyte) interface reactions and the transport rate of zinc ions in the electrolyte are crucial fields for long-term ZIBs. However, parasitic reactions and dendrite growth at the electrode/electrolyte interface hinder the practical application of ZIBs. Thus, adjusting the composition of the electrolyte is valuable to reduce active-H2O molecules in the solvation structure and realize a textured zinc anode. In this mini-review, the electrochemical reaction dilemmas in electrode/electrolyte interfaces and the modification mechanism of additives are first summarized. Furthermore, we compare the charge transfer and storage methods among various electrolyte additives. Notably, the effects of plating/stripping textures ((100), (101) and (002) crystal planes) on the reversibility of zinc metal anodes are highlighted, providing a more intuitive strategy for the epitaxial growth of zinc metal. Finally, the specific applications and perspectives of ZIBs with additives are outlined to guide next-generation efficient energy storage.

Abstract:Comprehensive aspects of electrolyte engineering tactics for stabilizing Zn anodes including challenges in Zn metal anodes, electrolyte modulation methods, systematic mechanisms, and outlook for future research are summarized in this review to provide more train of thought for better improve the performance of Zn anodes and even AZIB full cells. In response to the need of sustainable development, there is an increasing demand for electrical energy storage, leading to a stimulated pursuit of advanced batteries. Aqueous zinc ion batteries (AZIBs) have attracted much attention due to their low cost, high safety, and environmental friendliness. Despite the great efforts made by researchers in designing and developing high‐performance AZIBs, several challenges remain. Particularly for Zn anode, the growth of zinc dendrites and occurance of various side reactions significantly hinder the advancement of AZIBs. This review article aims to discuss the principles of AZIBs, the electrolyte's structure and properties, the challenges faced by AZIBs anodesm and the strategies to improve battery performance through electrolyte modification in a systematic manner. In conclusion, potential future directions aimed at enhancing the stability of zinc anodes and cathodes by electrolyte modification strategies are proposed to ensure that research efforts are geared toward achieving realistic performance targets for commercializing AZIBs.

Rechargeable aqueous zinc‐ion batteries (AZBs), with their high theoretical capacity, low cost, safety, and environmental friendliness, have risen as a promising candidate for next‐generation energy storage. Despite the fruitful progress in cathode material research, the electrochemical performance of the AZB remains hindered by the physical and chemical instability of the Zn anode. The Zn anode suffers from dendrite growth and chemical reactions with the electrolyte, leading to efficiency decay and capacity loss. Recently, significant effort has been dedicated to regulating the Zn anode. Electrolyte manipulation, including tailoring the salt, additives, or concentration, is a useful strategy as the electrolyte strongly influences the anode's failure processes. It is thus worthwhile to gain an in‐depth understanding of these electrolyte‐dependent regulation mechanisms. With this in mind, this review first outlines the two main issues behind Zn anode failure, dendrite growth, and side reactions. Subsequently, an understanding of the electrolyte tailoring strategy, namely, the influence of the salt, additive, and concentration on the Zn anode, is provided. We conclude by summarizing the future prospects of the Zn metal anode and potential electrolyte‐based solutions.

Abstract:This review aims at providing a fundamental understanding of challenges associated with the metallic Zn anode in aqueous electrolytes, including dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution reaction, and corrosion, meanwhile offering a guideline for the modification strategies of mild aqueous electrolytes and additives toward stable and high‐energy‐density aqueous Zn‐ion batteries in the future. Aqueous Zn‐metal batteries (AZMBs) have gained great interest due to their low cost, eco‐friendliness, and inherent safety, which serve as a promising complement to the existing metal‐based batteries, e.g., lithium‐metal batteries and sodium‐metal batteries. Although the utilization of aqueous electrolytes and Zn metal anode in AZMBs ensures their improved safety over other metal batteries meanwhile guaranteeing their decent energy density at the cell level, plenty of challenges involved with metallic Zn anode still await to be addressed, including dendrite growth, hydrogen evolution reaction, and zinc corrosion and passivation. In the past years, several attempts have been adopted to address these problems, among which engineering the aqueous electrolytes and additives is regarded as a facile and promising approach. In this review, a comprehensive summary of aqueous electrolytes and electrolyte additives will be given based on the recent literature, aiming at providing a fundamental understanding of the challenges associated with the metallic Zn anode in aqueous electrolytes, meanwhile offering a guideline for the electrolytes and additives engineering strategies toward stable AZMBs in the future.

Abstract:<p>Among all the electrochemical energy storage systems, zinc-based batteries, such as zinc-air, zinc-metal, zinc-ion batteries, etc., have been recognized as an important group of candidates that could be potential alternatives to the currently dominant lead-acid and lithium-ion battery systems, because they have many unbeatable merits, including direct use of zinc metal as electrode; compatible with low cost, non-flammable, and environement-friendly aqueous electrolyte; assembly in ambient conditions; environmental benignity; and high safety. Currently, however, the capacitance, cycle life, and safety of zinc-based batteries were significantly degraded by zinc-water interaction problems that take place on the zinc metal electrode, including corrosion, passivation, shape change, and dendrite formation. This review gives a specific, comprehensive and in-depth summary of the mechanisms behind these problems; as well as state-of-the-art progress in the protection of the zinc electrode via intrinsic zinc alloy, zinc surface coating and electrolyte engineering in full pH range aqueous electrolyte. Future development trends, perspective and outlooks on the further blossom of these strategies are also presented.</p>

Abstract:Solid‐electrolyte interphase plays a significant role in promoting the reversibility of Zn metal anode in aqueous batteries. Herein, recent progress on electrolyte strategies facilitating the formation of anion‐derived solid‐electrolyte interphase is summarized. Further challenges and perspectives are also presented. Rechargeable aqueous zinc–metal batteries (AZBs) are a promising complimentary technology to the existing lithium‐ion batteries and the re‐emerging lithium–metal batteries to satisfy the increasing demands on energy storage. Despite considerable progress achieved in the past years, the fundamental understanding of the solid‐electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation and how its composition influences the SEI properties are limited. This review highlights the functionalities of anion‐tuned SEI on the reversibility of zinc–metal anode, with a specific emphasis on new structural insights obtained through advanced characterizations and computational techniques. Recent efforts in terms of key variables that govern the interfacial behaviors to improve the long‐term stability of zinc anode, i.e., Coulombic efficiency, plating morphology, dendrite formation, and side‐reactions, are comprehensively reviewed. Lastly, the remaining challenges and future perspectives are presented, providing insights into the rational design of practical high‐performance AZBs.

Abstract:<p>Rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs) have manifested great potential as an alternative to traditional electrochemical energy-storage devices. However, challenges concerned with zinc metal anode, including zinc dendrite and side reactions, severely hinder the performance of rechargeable ZIBs. Therefore, a profound comprehension of these challenges is necessary for the exploration of high-performance zinc metal anodes. Instead of simply introducing the implementation methods to improve the performance of zinc metal anode, this review overviews and categorizes the strategies towards the challenges of zinc metal anode by their essential design principles from the perspective of electrochemical and chemical reaction. Besides, the prospects of zinc anode development are proposed as well. This contribution is intended to throw light upon a systematical understanding of the strategies and provide insights into the future development of highly reversible and stable zinc metal anode for ZIBs.</p>

Abstract:With distinct advantages like high gravimetric and volumetric capacity, low redox potential, a natural abundance of zinc, and compatibility with water, Zn-ion batteries have become a potential alternative to Li-ion batteries. However, several challenges still need to be addressed prior to the practical applications of Zn-ion batteries, such as their narrow electrochemical window, irreversibility, unstable anode, sluggish kinetics and difficulties regarding the insertion of Zn2+ into the host material for the cathode. Such issues can be addressed by regulating the components and structures of the electrolyte which connects the cathode and anode parts. In this mini review, we systematically describe the compositions and structures of the electrolyte and then discuss the core issues faced by the batteries, particularly their mechanism and affected factors. Furthermore, a relatively comprehensive overview is presented of the strategies being utilized to improve Zn-ion batteries via regulating liquid electrolyte, mainly including the optimization of solvents and salts, adjustment of electrolyte concentration, introduction of additives into the electrolyte, and the fabrication of a hybrid-ion battery. In the final section, we offer insights into the development of liquid electrolytes for Zn-ion batteries.

Abstract:Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage systems as their high safety, environmentally-friendly, and low-cost. Nevertheless, the hydrogen evolution reaction, corrosion reactions, and dendrite growth on the zinc metal anode severely hindered the commercialization of AZIBs. In recent years, numerous reports have demonstrated that the above issues can be effectively and cost-efficiently resolved through electrolyte regulation. The electrolyte in the batteries can be classified as bulk electrolyte and electrolyte double layer (EDL) electrolyte. Additionally, the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation on the zinc metal anode is significantly affected by the composition and properties of the electrolyte. However, a complete macroscopic insight into the diverse electrolyte design methods related to the three aforementioned aspects is still lacking. Herein, after thoroughly explaining the fundamental issues associated with zinc metal anodes in aqueous electrolytes, we provide a detailed summary of three electrolyte regulation methods: solvation structure regulation, which addresses the bulk electrolyte; EDL regulation, which focuses on the EDL electrolyte; and SEI regulation, which targets the SEI. Additionally, an overview of prospective research directions in the development of electrolyte regulation methods is offered. This review aims to serve as a reference for researchers in future electrolyte design.

Abstract:Rechargeable aqueous zinc (Zn) batteries have captured extensive attentions as auspicious next generation energy storage devices due to the merits of low cost, high capacity, inherent safety, and abundant resources. However, the humble poor durability and low coulombic efficiency of Zn anodes seriously hinder their wide applications. Zn batteries can be classified into two classifications: alkaline and neutral Zn batteries, according to the nature of electrolyte. Due to the different electrochemical behaviors of Zn anodes in the alkaline and neutral electrolytes, the fundamental comprehensions of Zn anodes in both electrolytes remain dubious. In this review, the fundamental reactions of Zn anodes in alkaline and neutral electrolytes were elucidated in detail. Specifically, the primary reasons (including surface passivation, dendritic growth, hydrogen evolution, and shape change in the Zn stripping/plating procedure) which lead to the pitiable durability and low coulombic efficiency of Zn anodes in both electrolytes were profoundly illuminated, respectively. Moreover, the most recent progresses about the Zn anodes protective strategies to settle the above critical problems were systematically recapitulated and clarified, including the surface modification, structural and constitution design, electrolyte modification and other protective strategies. Finally, the challenges and opportunities in high-performance Zn anodes are further expected. This review will shed light on the exploit of advanced Zn anodes for high-performance Zn batteries in both alkaline and neutral electrolytes.

Abstract:Zinc-ion batteries (ZIBs) have been attracting much interest as metallic Zn anodes have high theoretical capacity and low redox potential. However, the practical use of ZIBs are severely hampered by the issues with zinc dendrites, corrosion, passivation, byproducts, cathode material dissolution, and harmful electrostatic interactions. The electrolyte, whichcontacts the cathode and anode simultaneously in the battery, is a crucial component directly related to these problems. In recent years, many investigations have been conducted on electrolyte optimization. The effects of electrolyte optimization on the cathode and anode, including the effect on charge storage mechanism and the improvement of reaction kinetics, are still not clarified completely. Therefore, more attention must be paid to the electrolytes in ZIBs, which is not only conducive to ensure the stable operation of the electrolyte itself, but also further increase the electrochemical efficiency of cathodes and anodes, so as to cooperatively enhance the electrochemical performance of ZIBs, endowing ZIBs with long life and high stability. In this review, the progress on different electrolytes including aqueous electrolytes, organic electrolytes, gel electrolytes and all-solid-state electrolytes is summarized for ZIBs. Also, the effect of different electrolytes is discussed on the electrodes and charge storage mechanism. Finally, the difficulties and prospects of the electrolytes for ZIBs are examined with potential research areas in mind for ZIB development in the future.

Regulating Zn Ion Desolvation and Deposition Chemistry Toward Durable and Fast Rechargeable Zn Metal Batteries

Abstract:A solid electrolyte interface is rationally designed to endow fast and durable Zn anodes by simultaneously lowering the zinc ion desolvation energy barrier, improving the Zn deposition kinetics, and enabling underneath Zn plating. The high Zn ion desolvation energy, sluggish Zn deposition kinetics, and top Zn plating pattern are the key challenges toward practical Zn anodes. Herein, these key issues are addressed by introducing zinc pyrovanadate (ZVO) as a solid zinc‐ion conductor interface to induce smooth and fast Zn deposition underneath the layer. Electrochemical studies, computational analysis, and in situ observations reveal the boosted desolvation and deposition kinetics, and uniformity by ZVO interface. In addition, the anti‐corrosion ability of Zn anodes is improved, resulting in high Zn stripping/plating reversibility. Consequently, the ZVO layer renders fast rechargeability and durable life in both Zn symmetric cells (1050 h at 10 mA cm−2, 1 mAh cm−2) and Zn/V2O5 batteries (79.1% capacity retention after 1000 cycles at 2 A g−1) with low electrode polarization. This work provides insights into the design of solid zinc‐ion conductor interface to enhance the interface stability and kinetics of Zn metal anodes.

Abstract:Aqueous Zn ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered as one of promising candidates for new-generation electrochemical energy storage applications owing to the intrinsic safety, high affordability, and competitive performance. However, the instability of metallic Zn anode in aqueous electrolytes brings serious obstacles in the development of Zn-based energy storage devices, spurring a research surge in Zn anode stabilizing strategies recently. Electrolyte manipulation has attracted much attention as a cost-effective and multifunctional strategy, which could function not only during zinc ion diffusion, de-solvation, but also in Zn metal nucleation. In this review, we firstly introduce the main challenges and related fundamental studies of Zn plating/stripping. Then various aqueous electrolyte engineering strategies are discussed, which includes the optimizing methods, regulation principles as well as corresponding achievements. Finally, general optimizing principles within Zn deposition and future research perspectives are proposed for the further development of advanced rechargeable AZIBs.
Mini-Review on the Regulation of Electrolyte Solvation Structure for Aqueous Zinc Ion Batteries

Abstract:Zinc as an anode, with low potential (−0.762 V vs. SHE) and high theoretical capacity (820 mAh g−1 or 5854 mAh L−1), shows great promise for energy storage devices. The aqueous zinc ion battery (ZIB) is known as a prospective candidate for large-scale application in the future due to its high safety, environmental friendliness, abundant zinc resources on earth, and low-cost advantages. However, the existence of zinc dendrites and side reactions limit the practical application of ZIBs. Therefore, a lot of effort has been made to improve the performance from aspects including the structure design and surface modification of zinc anodes, regulation of the electrolyte solvation structure, and design of the functional separator. In this review, we attempt to summarize recent advances on the regulation of the electrolyte solvation structure through a number of selected representative works from two aspects: high-concentration salt strategy and electrolyte additives. At the end of this review, the challenges and future development prospects are briefly outlined.

Abstract:Rechargeable alkaline zinc‐based batteries (ZBBs) have attracted extensive research attention due to their advantages of low cost, high specific energy, and high safety. Although the investigation of cathodes for alkaline secondary ZBBs has reached a relatively advanced stage, the exploration of zinc anodes is still in its infancy. Zinc anodes in alkaline electrolytes encounter challenges such as dendrite formation, passivation, corrosion during periods of cell inactivity and hydrogen evolution during cycling, thereby limiting their rechargeability and storability. Drawing upon the latest research on zinc anodes, we have identified and categorized six fundamental strategies that encompass a wide range of aspects, from electrode modifications and electrolytes to charge protocols. Specifically, these strategies include 3D structures, coatings, alloying, additives, separators, and charge protocols. They serve as an insight summary of the current research progress on zinc anodes. Additionally, the complementary nature of these strategies allows for flexible combination, enabling further enhancement of the overall performance of zinc anodes. Finally, several future directions for the advancement of practical alkaline Zn anode are proposed. This comprehensive review not only consolidates the existing knowledge but also paves the way for broader research opportunities in the pursuit of high‐performance alkaline zinc anodes. Abstract:In recent years, thanks to the investigation of the in-depth mechanism, novel cathode material exploitation, and electrolyte optimization, the electrochemical performance of rechargeable Zn-based batteries (RZBs) has been significantly improved. Nevertheless, there are still some persistent challenges locating the instability of the Zn anodes that hinder the commercialization and industrialization of RZBs, especially the obstinate dendrites and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on Zn anodes, which will dramatically compromise the cycle stability and Coulombic efficiency. Therefore, various strategies with fundamental design principles focusing on the suppression of dendrite and the HER have been carefully summarized and categorized in this review, which are critically dissected according to the intrinsic mechanisms. Finally, pertinent insights into the challenges and perspectives on the future development of Zn anodes are also emphasized, expecting to supply potential research directions to promote the practical applications of RZBs.

Abstract:With the low cost, excellent safety and high theoretical specific capacity, aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) are considered as a potential rival for lithium-ion batteries to promote the sustainable development of large-scale energy storage technologies. However, the notorious Zn dendrites and low Coulombic efficiency (CE) limit further development of AZIBs, due to the unstable electrochemical deposition/stripping behavior of Zn anode in aqueous zinc ion electrolytes. In this review, critical issues and advances are summarized in electrolyte engineering strategies. These strategies are focused on active water molecules during electrochemical process, including high-concentration electrolytes, ionic liquids, gel-polymer electrolytes and functional additives. With suppressed active water molecules, the solvation and de-solvation behavior of Zn2+ can be regulated, thereby modulating the electrochemical performance of Zn anode. Finally, the inherent problems of these strategies are discussed, and some promising directions are provided on electrolytes engineering for high performance Zn anode in AZIBs.
