Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), a carbon-based 0-Dimensionalfluorescent material with simple preparation method, wide range of raw materials, and excellent physical and chemical properties have attracted the attention of many researchers in recent years because of their stable and adjustable photoluminescence properties, good biocompatibility, and abundant surface defects. The composite of CDs and inorganic nanomaterials with excellent physical properties can expand the application scope of CDs, make up for the limitation of single-component CDs in applications, and improve the application performance of inorganic nanomaterials and enhance the versatility of inorganic nanomaterials. Such composite materials have been widely used in sensing, catalysis, biology, and optoelectronics. This review summarizes the preparation methods and formation mechanism of carbon dot/inorganic nanohybrid materials, introduces the properties and junctions of CDs/inorganic nanohybrid materials, and outlines the applications of nanohybrid materials in the fields of sensing, therapeutic system, catalysis, photoelectric devices and so on. Finally, the development prospects and challenges in preparing and applying CDs/inorganic nanomaterials are prospected.

Abstract:The core-shell composite particles show a lot of different and outstanding characters when they are prepared by coating other inorganic substances in nano-particle surfaces.This article has discussed three kinds of main preparation methods of the core-shell composite particle: The sol-gel method,Heterogeneous nucleation process and heterogeneous deposition process.At first,preparation mechanism and preparation technique process are introduced respectively.Then,the researching situation is discussed.At last,influence factors are analyzed to prepare the perfect core-shell composite particles and to improve the ratios of coated nano-particles.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots are a novel form of carbon material. They offer numerous benefits including particle size adjustability, light resistance, ease of functionalization, low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and high-water solubility, as well as their easy accessibility of raw materials. Carbon quantum dots have been widely used in various fields. The preparation methods employed are predominantly top-down methods such as arc discharge, laser ablation, electrochemical and chemical oxidation, as well as bottom-up methods such as templates, microwave, and hydrothermal techniques. This article provides an overview of the properties, preparation methods, raw materials for preparation, and the heteroatom doping of carbon quantum dots, and it summarizes the applications in related fields, such as optoelectronics, bioimaging, drug delivery, cancer therapy, sensors, and environmental remediation. Finally, currently encountered issues of carbon quantum dots are presented. The latest research progress in synthesis and application, as well as the challenges outlined in this review, can help and encourage future research on carbon quantum dots.

Abstract:Carbon-based hybrid nanostructures, especially carbon hybrid dots with metal oxides, are important to both fundamental studies and technological applications. In this work, carbon-TiO2 hybrid dots in two different structural configurations were prepared and investigated comparatively for their optical properties and photoinduced redox characteristics, and the results suggested major differences. In the configuration of small carbon nanoparticles each coated/doped with only a small amount of TiO2, the TiO2 played the role of enhancing the surface passivation effect in conjunction with organic surface functionalization agents for the hybrid dots to exhibit a much improved performance over that of their corresponding neat carbon dots. In the other configuration, however, the hybrid dots of TiO2 nanocrystals each composited with nanoscale carbon domains were apparently similar to dye-sensitized TiO2 nanoparticle systems, with the carbon domains providing the dye function for the harvesting of visible photons. While combining nanoscale carbon and TiO2 for various applications has been a popular topic in the recent literature, the results reported here provide new insights into the different structural configurations or arrangements between the carbon and TiO2 and their associated effects on the optical and photoinduced redox properties of the hybrid nanostructures. Significant implications of the results on an understanding of the mechanistic relationships between the hybrid nano-structures/configurations and optical/redox properties are highlighted, and opportunities in the further exploration of carbon-metal oxide hybrid dots and their applications are discussed.

Abstract:Carbon "quantum" dots or carbon dots (CDots) exploit and enhance the intrinsic photoexcited state properties and processes of small carbon nanoparticles via effective nanoparticle surface passivation by chemical functionalization with organic species. The optical properties and photoinduced redox characteristics of CDots are competitive to those of established conventional semiconductor quantum dots and also fullerenes and other carbon nanomaterials. Highlighted here are major advances in the exploration of CDots for their serving as high-performance yet nontoxic fluorescence probes for one- and multi-photon bioimaging in vitro and in vivo, and for their uniquely potent antimicrobial function to inactivate effectively and efficiently some of the toughest bacterial pathogens and viruses under visible/natural or ambient light conditions. Opportunities and challenges in the further development of the CDots platform and related technologies are discussed.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) generally refer to nanoscale particles of conventional semiconductors that are subject to the quantum-confinement effect, though other nanomaterials of similar optical and redox properties are also named as QDs even in the absence of strictly defined quantum confinement. Among such nanomaterials that have attracted tremendous recent interest are carbon dots, which are small carbon nanoparticles with some form of surface passivation, and graphene quantum dots in various configurations. In this article, we highlight these carbon-based QDs by focusing on their syntheses, on their photoexcited state properties and redox processes, and on their applications as photocatalysts in visible-light carbon dioxide reduction and in water-splitting, as well as on their mechanistic similarities and differences.

Abstract:Carbon-based “quantum” dots (or “carbon dots”) are generally defined as surface-passivated small carbon nanoparticles that are brightly fluorescent. Apparently, the carbon particle surface passivation in carbon dots is critical to their fluorescence performance. An effective way to improve the surface passivation is to dope the surface of the precursor carbon nanoparticles with an inorganic salt, followed by the typical functionalization with organic molecules. In this work we passivated small carbon nanoparticles by a combination of the surface-doping with nanoscale semiconductors and the organic functionalization, coupled with gel column fractionation to harvest the most fluorescent carbon dots, which exhibited fluorescence emission quantum yields of up to 78%. Experimental and mechanistic issues relevant to potentially further improve the performance of carbon dots toward their being quantitatively fluorescent are discussed.

Abstract:Organic-inorganic(O/I) nanocomposite coatings have been developed very quickly in recent years and are gradually becoming one of the most active areas in coatings' research. This review classifies the preparation methods into three categories: embedding with nanoparticles, sot-gel process and self-assembly method. All these three routes are systematically discussed including the factors influencing the structure and properties of nanocomposite coatings. Some evaluations and suggestions are given for each method.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs,C-dots or CDs),a new type of carbon materials,less than 10 nm in size,have a lot of excellent performance,such as superior solubility in water,chemical inertness,low toxicity, easy functionalization,resistance to photobleaching and good photostability,having attracted widespread atten-tion as a rising star in nanocarbon family in recent years.Since the phenomenon of bright colorful light from car-bon quantum dots was reported in 2006,research groups around the world have begun to investigate the carbon quantum dots.CQDs produced from various synthetic strategies find their wide values in more and more fields, especially in biomedicine,optoeletronics,catalysis and sensors.In this review,we describe the recent progress in the field of CQDs,focusing on their synthetic methods,size control,modification strategies,photoelectric properties,luminescent mechanism,and applications in biomedicine,optoelectronics,catalysis and sensor is-sues.

Abstract:In the recent decade, carbon dots have drawn immense attention and prompted intense investigation. The latest form of nanocarbon, the carbon nanodot, is attracting intensive research efforts, similar to its earlier analogues, namely, fullerene, carbon nanotube, and graphene. One outstanding feature that distinguishes carbon nanodots from other known forms of carbon materials is its water solubility owing to extensive surface functionalization (the presence of polar surface functional groups). These carbonaceous quantum dots, or carbon nanodots, have several advantages over traditional semiconductor-based quantum dots. They possess outstanding photoluminescence, fluorescence, biocompatibility, biosensing and bioimaging, photostability, feedstock sustainability, extensive surface functionalization and bio-conjugation, excellent colloidal stability, eco-friendly synthesis (from organic matter such as glucose, coffee, tea, and grass to biomass waste-derived sources), low toxicity, and cost-effectiveness. Recent advances in the synthesis and characterization of carbon dots have been received and new insight is provided. Presently known applications of carbon dots in the fields of bioimaging, drug delivery, sensing, and diagnosis were highlighted and future applications of these astounding materials are speculated.

Abstract:Quantum dots (QDs) have extensive application prospects in the fields of optics, magnetism, catalysis, and biomedicine. New carbon-doped QDs are currently being used in these research fields. Graphitic carbon nitride QDs (g-CNs) composed of only carbon and nitrogen have attracted attention because of their unique optical and catalytic properties. g-CNs have numerous electronic properties and can be used as photocatalytic modifiers in a wide range of applications in electrochemistry. Additionally, g-CNs also have biological potential and due to their chemical composition have extremely low toxicity; their blue light emission can be applied to biological imaging, and their appropriate energy level (2.7 eV) allows electrons to be deposited on their surface, which allows g-CNs to be used as photosensitizers in optical therapy. Finally, g-CNs can be combined with other nanomaterials to form composite materials, which can result in new advantages not seen in either of the materials alone. In this manuscript, we thoroughly report the most recent findings regarding the synthesis of g-CNs and their respective properties. We report the advantages of g-CNs conferred by their unique properties and their advantages for application in current biology and medicines.

Abstract:Carbon-based quantum dots (QDs) have emerged as a fascinating class of advanced materials with a unique combination of optoelectronic, biocompatible, and catalytic characteristics, apt for a plethora of applications ranging from electronic to photoelectrochemical devices. Recent research works have established carbon-based QDs for those frontline applications through improvements in materials design, processing, and device stability. This review broadly presents the recent progress in the synthesis of carbon-based QDs, including carbon QDs, graphene QDs, graphitic carbon nitride QDs and their heterostructures, as well as their salient applications. The synthesis methods of carbon-based QDs are first introduced, followed by an extensive discussion of the dependence of the device performance on the intrinsic properties and nanostructures of carbon-based QDs, aiming to present the general strategies for device designing with optimal performance. Furthermore, diverse applications of carbon-based QDs are presented, with an emphasis on the relationship between band alignment, charge transfer, and performance improvement. Among the applications discussed in this review, much focus is given to photo and electrocatalytic, energy storage and conversion, and bioapplications, which pose a grand challenge for rational materials and device designs. Finally, a summary is presented, and existing challenges and future directions are elaborated.
