Abstract:Bimetallic AgPd nanoparticles were successfully immobilized on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) functionalized SBA-15 for the first time by a facile co-reduction method. These catalysts were applied in the decomposition of formic acid. The dehydrogenation of formic acid is dependent on the composition of AgPd and the content of carbon nitride (CN). Among all of the AgPd/mCND/SBA-15 catalysts tested, the Ag10Pd90/0.2CND/SBA-15 catalyst exhibits highly superior performance for the decomposition of formic acid into high-quality hydrogen at 323 K with 100% hydrogen selectivity and a turnover frequency of 893 h(-1), which is among the maximum values obtained at 323 K in this paper. The improved performance is a promising step towards the utilization of formic acid as a hydrogen storage material.
Mechanistic insight into efficient H2 generation upon HCOONa hydrolysis

Abstract:Sodium formate (SF) is regarded as a technological additive to improve H2 generation upon HCOOH dehydrogenation. The development of SF as a hydrogen storage material is still a challenge. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of carbon nanosphere-stabilized Pd nanoparticles (Pd/CNS) for the direct H2 generation upon SF hydrolysis in the presence of Fe3+. The tandem reaction, isotopic mass spectrometry, and gas chromatograms result confirmed that SF hydrolysis generates H2 with one H atom provided by SF and other H by H2O. The kinetic study and detailed mechanistic investigations have demonstrated that the concerted process between the cleavage of O-H bond in H2O and -O2C-H bond oxidative addition is the rate-controlling step in SF hydrolysis. This work offers a new chemical hydrogen storage material (HCOONa) for the high-efficiency generation, transport, and storage of H2.

“On–Off” Control for On-Demand Hydrogen Production from the Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid

Abstract:In order to effectively use the produced H2, the exploration of “on–off” control for on-demand hydrogen production is still a practical matter of supreme importance. Herein, a surfactant-free and facile method was successfully employed to synthesize Ag–Pd/C nanocomposites via simple alloying of commercial Pd/C and Ag for synergistically promoting H2 production from formic acid (FA). The optimal Ag16–Pd1/C nanocomposite presents the highest catalytic activity with a turnover frequency of 2444.10 h–1 and 100% H2 selectivity, whereas that of commercial Pd/C is only 619.39 h–1. Indeed, the activation energy has been effectively reduced from 40.45 kJ/mol (Pd/C) to 32.27 kJ/mol (Ag16–Pd1/C) by alloying commercial Pd/C with Ag. More importantly, the highly selective and effective “on–off” switch for hydrogen production upon the dehydrogenation of FA has been successfully achieved by varying the pH.

Abstract:Abstract Hydrogen (H 2 ) generation from natural biological metabolic products has remained a huge challenge for the energy arena. However, designing a catalytic system with complementary properties including high surface area, high loading, and easy separation offers a promising route for efficient utilization of nanoreactors for prospective H 2 suppliers to a fuel cell. Herein, selective dehydrogenation of formic acid (FA) as a natural biological metabolic product to H 2 and CO 2 gas mixtures has been studied by supporting ultrafine palladium nanoparticles on organosulfur-functionalized SBA-15 nanoreactor under ultrasonic irradiation. The effects of the porous structure as a nanoreactor, and organosulfur groups, which presented around the Pd due to their prominent roles in anchoring and stabilizing of Pd NPs, studied as a superior catalyst for selective dehydrogenation of FA. Whole catalytic systems were utilized in ultrasonic irradiation in the absence of additives to provide excellent TOF/TON values. It was found that propose catalyst is a greener, recyclable, and more suitable option for the large-scale application and provide some new insights into stabilization of ultra-fine metal nanoparticle for a variety of applications.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA) has been increasingly favored by researchers as an ideal material for the chemical storage of hydrogen. However, the exploration of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from FA is less extensive compared to conventional thermal catalytic FA decomposition. Therefore, constructing highly active photocatalysts for H-2 release from FA presents a challenging issue. Herein, we employed a strategy that involves Pd nanoparticles (NPs) immobilized on amine-functionalized mesoporous titanium dioxide (TiO2-NH2) to promote hydrogen production from FA under full-spectrum light illumination. Impressively, the as-made 2 wt% Pd/TiO2-NH2 catalyst showed remarkable activity under full-spectrum light (Turnover frequency (TOF) of 1380.5 h(-1) at 308 K, H-2 selectivity: 100%). Characterization results indicated that the unique mesoporous structure of TiO2-NH2, the synergistic interaction of Pd NPs with -NH2, and the Mott-Schottky heterojunction are primarily responsible for the excellent photocatalytic performance of 2 wt% Pd/TiO2-NH2. This study modulates the metal-support interactions through surface engineering and proposes a novel and effective method for the construction of high-performance photocatalysts for H-2 production from FA or other photoinduced reactions.
Facile synthesis of AuPd nanoparticles anchored on TiO2 nanosheets for efficient dehydrogenation of formic acid.

Abstract:Safe and efficient hydrogen storage is one of the key technologies for the widespread utilization of hydrogen energy. Formic acid (FA) is regarded as a safe and convenient chemical hydrogen storage material. However, the lack of highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts hinders its practical application. Herein, we presented a facile wet-impregnated deposition method to synthesize ultrafine AuPd alloy nanoparticles anchored on TiO2 nanosheets (AuPd/TiO2 nanosheets) which were used as high efficient catalysts for the dehydrogenation of FA. TiO2 nanosheets were calcined at different temperatures to modify the catalytic activity of catalyst. AuPd/TiO2 nanosheets-400 exhibits the superior activity for catalyzing the FA to release 96% of overall hydrogen content with an initial turnover frequency value of 592 mol H-2 mol(-1) metal h(-1) at 25 degrees C and low activation energy of 11.8 kJ mol(-1). Detailed characterizations show that the superior catalytic performance can be ascribed to the alloy structure of AuPd centers, the phase and crystallinity of TiO2 nanosheets, and the strong electron transfer interaction between AuPd nanoparticles and TiO2 nanosheets substrate.

Abstract:Developing an efficient and simple heterogeneous catalytic system for CO2 conversion into formic acid (FA) is a vibrant research area because FA is recognized as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier. On the basis of our previous work on unsupported nanoporous palladium‐catalyzed hydrogenation proceeding through a Pd‐hydride intermediate, we report herein four types of PdNPore catalysts for the CO2 hydrogenation. The PdNPore‐1 catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity for CO2 hydrogenation into formate and obtained a yield of 86% at 80 °C under H2 (1.0 MPa) and CO2 (1.5 MPa) with 1,8‐diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec‐7‐ene (DBU) as a base in acetonitrile. Moreover, the catalyst was easily recovered and reused without any loss of catalytic activity. Sodium bicarbonate could also be hydrogenated using the PdNPore‐1 catalyst.

Abstract:The development of safe and efficient H-2 generation/storage materials toward a fuel-cell-based H-2 economy as a long-term solution has recently received much attention. Herein we report the development of preformed Pd nanoparticles supported on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) via sol-immobilisation and impregnation techniques as efficient catalysts for the liquid phase decomposition of formic acid to H-2. We used CNFs as the preferred choice of support and treated at three different temperatures for the deposition of Pd nanoparticles. They were thoroughly characterised using XRD, XPS, SEM-EDX, TEM, Raman spectroscopy and BET. We observed that the Pd particle size, metal exposure and CNF graphitisation grade play an important role in catalytic performance. We found that Pd/CNFs prepared by the sol-immobilisation method displayed higher catalytic performance than those prepared by the impregnation method, due to the smaller Pd particles and high Pd exposure of the catalysts prepared by the first method. Moreover, we have shown that the best results have been obtained using CNFs with a high graphitisation degree (HHT). DFT studies have been performed to gain insights into the reactivity and decomposition of formic acid along two-reaction pathways on Pd(111), Pd(011) and Pd(001) surfaces.
CO2-Mediated Hydrogen Energy Release-Storage Enabled by High-Dispersion Gold-Palladium Alloy Nanodots.

Abstract:Developing and fabricating a heterogeneous catalyst for efficient formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation coupled with CO2 hydrogenation back to FA is a promising approach to constructing a complete CO2-mediated hydrogen release-storage system, which remains challenging. Herein, a facile two-step strategy involving high-temperature pyrolysis and wet chemical reduction processes can synthesize efficient pyridinic-nitrogen-modified carbon-loaded gold-palladium alloy nanodots (AuPd alloy NDs). These NDs exhibit a prominent electron synergistic effect between Au and Pd components and tunable alloy-support interactions. The pyridinic-N dosage in carbon substrate improves the surface electron density of the alloy catalyst, thus regulating the chemical adsorption of FA molecules. Specifically, the engineered Au3Pd7/CN0.25 demonstrates an outstanding room-temperature FA dehydrogenation efficiency, achieving ≈100% conversion and an initial turnover frequency (TOF) of up to 9049 h-1. The versatile AuPd alloy NDs also show the ability to convert CO2, one of the products of FA dehydrogenation, into FA (formate) with a 90.8% yield under mild conditions. Moreover, in-depth insights into the unique alloyed microstructure, structure-activity relationship, key intermediates, and the alloy-driven five-step reaction mechanism involving the rate-determining step of C─H bond cleavage from critical *HCOO species via D-labeled isotope, in situ infrared spectroscopy, and theoretical calculations are investigated.
Bimetallic PdAu Nanoframes for Electrochemical H 2 O 2 Production in Acids

Abstract:Electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction via the two-electron pathway to H2O2 represents a promising route to enable its on-site, on-demand production for direct consumer use. In particular, running this reaction in acids is practically relevant and scientifically challenging. Herein, we demonstrate that bimetallic PdAu nanoframes can be prepared via stepwise solution growth and etching under well-controlled conditions. The product exhibits a great performance for efficient H2O2 production in 0.1 M HClO4. A positive onset potential and high H2O2 yield of >90% are measured, which are considerably improved over pure Au and other Au-based alloys. Theoretical simulations indicate that the incorporation of dilute Pd atoms enhances the adsorption of *OOH as the key intermediate, and thereby promotes the reaction activity and selectivity. Abstract:Formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation and CO2 hydrogenation to FA/formate represent promising methodologies for the efficient and clean storage and release of hydrogen, forming a CO2-neutral energy cycle. Here, we report the synthesis of highly dispersed and stable bimetallic Pd-based nanoparticles, immobilized on self-pillared silicalite-1 (SP-S-1) zeolite nanosheets using an incipient wetness co-impregnation technique. Owing to the highly accessible active sites, effective mass transfer, exceptional hydrophilicity, and the synergistic effect of the bimetallic species, the optimized PdCe0.2/SP-S-1 catalyst demonstrated unparalleled catalytic performance in both FA dehydrogenation and CO2 hydrogenation to formate. Remarkably, it achieved a hydrogen generation rate of 5974 molH2 molPd-1 h-1 and a formate production rate of 536 molformate molPd-1 h-1 at 50 °C, surpassing most previously reported heterogeneous catalysts under similar conditions. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the interfacial effect between Pd and cerium oxide clusters substantially reduces the activation barriers for both reactions, thereby increasing the catalytic performance. Our research not only showcases a compelling application of zeolite nanosheet-supported bimetallic nanocatalysts in CO2-mediated hydrogen storage and release but also contributes valuable insights towards the development of safe, efficient, and sustainable hydrogen technologies.

Abstract:Steerable hydrogen generation from the hydrogen storage chemical formic acid via heterogeneous catalysis has attracted considerable interest given the safety and efficiency concerns in handling H2. Herein, a series of carbon-supported capping-agent-free Pd nanoparticles (NPs) with mean sizes tunable from 2.0 to 5.2 nm are developed due to the demand for more efficient dehydrogenation from a formic acid-formate solution of pH 3.5 at room temperature. The trick for the facile size-controlled synthesis of Pd/C catalysts is the selective addition of Na2CO3, NH3·H2O, or NaOH to a Pd(II) solution to attain initial pH values of 7-9.5. For comparison, cuboctahedron modeling and electrochemical COads stripping methods are applied to evaluate active surface Pd sites for turnover frequency (TOF) calculation. Both mass activity and specific activity (TOF) of hydrogen production are not only time-dependent but also Pd-size-dependent. An initial H2 production rate of 246 L·h-1·gPd-1 is achieved on 2.0 nm Pd/C at 303 K, together with a TOF of 1815 h-1 on the basis of cuboctahedron modeling of surface-active Pd sites. The initial TOF exhibits a significant rise from 3.5 down to 2.8 nm and then levels off below 2.8 nm and even shows a maxima at ca. 2.2 nm using the electrochemical surface area for calculation. The volcano-shaped dependence of TOF on Pd NP size may be better attributed to the changing ratios of terrace sites to defect sites on Pd NPs.

Abstract:The use of formic acid (FA) to produce molecular H2 is a promising means of efficient energy storage in a fuel-cell-based hydrogen economy. To date, there has been a lack of heterogeneous catalyst systems that are sufficiently active, selective, and stable for clean H2 production by FA decomposition at room temperature. For the first time, we report that flexible pyridinic-N-doped carbon hybrids as support materials can significantly boost the efficiency of palladium nanoparticle for H2 generation; this is due to prominent surface electronic modulation. Under mild conditions, the optimized engineered Pd/CN0.25 catalyst exhibited high performance in both FA dehydrogenation (achieving almost full conversion, and a turnover frequency of 5530 h(-1) at 25 °C) and the reversible process of CO2 hydrogenation into FA. This system can lead to a full carbon-neutral energy cycle.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA, HCOOH), a convenient and safe hydrogen storage material, has the great potential for fuel cell applications. However, hydrogen generation of FA is inefficient in the presence of heterogeneous catalysts at relatively low temperatures, which remains a big challenge. Herein, La2O3-modified highly dispersed AuPd alloy nanoparticles (AuPd La2O3) with small particle size have been successfully anchored on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by a facile co-reduction route. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and 100% hydrogen selectivity for hydrogen generation in the formic acid/sodium formate (FA/SF) system with the initial turnover frequency (TOF) value of 589 mol H-2 mol(-1) catalyst h(-1) at 50 degrees C and 280 mol H-2 mol(-1) catalyst h-1 even at room temperature (25 degrees C). The present Au0.3Pd0.7-(La2O3)(0.6)/CNTs with superior catalysis on FA dehydrogenation without any CO generation at room temperature can not only pave the way for practical application of hydrogen storage system, but also can be extended to other catalysis system. Abstract:HCOOH (FA) is considered as a potential hydrogen-storage material. The chemically stored hydrogen in FA can be catalyti-cally released even at room temperature, which can be utilized by polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, in order to make FA a feasible hydrogen-storage medium, it is necessary to find catalysts with superior performance that enable it to produce hydrogen under moderate conditions. Herein, for the first time to our knowledge, we report amine-functionalized SBA-15 (SBA-15-Amine)-supported bimetallic AgPd nanoparticles with various molar ratios through a facile co-reduction method for serve as a catalyst for the dehydro-genation reaction of FA. As indicated by the turnover frequency (TOF), the performance of these catalysts depended on their composition. Among all the prepared AgPd/SBA-15-Amine catalysts, Ag1Pd9/SBA-15-Amine exhibited exceedingly high activity for the dehydrogenation of FA to yield high-quality H-2 at 323 K, with a maximum TOF of 964 h (-1) and 100% selectivity. It is revealed that the catalyst exhibits stable catalytic performance after multiple usage cycles. Therefore, the catalyst we developed can be a potential candidate for prompting the widespread utilization of FA as a hydrogen-storage material.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA) exists in chemical industrial waste water and has practical potential for renewable hydrogen production by FA dehydrogenation (FAD) for application in fuel cells. In this work, we employed a bimetallic-based MOF Al/Co-BTC (1,3, 5-trimeric acid) as precursor to fabricate a sea urchin-like spherical nitrogen-doped superstructure (V-NCR) with carbon nanorods (CNRs). The carbon material was activated in hot NaOH solution and then loaded with Pd nanoparticles for FAD. As a result, Pd@V-NCRB-800 exhibits a remarkable catalytic activity: the turnover frequency (TOF) value up to 20578 h −1 at 333 K with the 100 % H 2 selectivity and excellent cyclic stability, which attributes to the numerous chemical contact sites provided by carbon materials, CNRs, and the modifying electronic interaction of N and Co species.

Abstract:Formic acid has emerged as a highly promising hydrogen storage material, and the development of efficient catalysts to facilitate its dehydrogenation remains imperative. In this study, a novel catalyst consisting of palladium nanoparticles supported on boron-doped porous carbon (Pd/BPC) was successfully synthesized to enable efficient hydrogen production through the dehydrogenation of formic acid. The impacts of the boron doping ratio, doping temperature, and palladium reduction temperature on the catalyst’s performance were systemically investigated. The results demonstrated the Pd/BPC catalyst synthesized with a carbon-to-boron ratio of 1:5 by calcination at 900 °C and subsequent reduction at 60 °C exhibited superior formic acid dehydrogenation performance, being 2.9 and 3.8 times greater than that of the Pd/PC catalysts without boron doping and commercial Pd/C, respectively. Additionally, the catalyst showed excellent cycle stability with no significant activity reduction after five consecutive cycles. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that boron doping not only facilitates the homogenous distribution of Pd nanoparticles but also induces a stronger support–metal interaction, thereby reinforcing the catalytic performance. This research is expected to provide valuable insights into the economically viable and efficient production of environmentally friendly hydrogen energy.

Abstract:Metallic nanofoams offer enhanced surface area and reduced density compared to their bulk counterparts while keeping intrinsic metallic properties. This combination makes nanofoams ideal for many applications, such as catalysis and battery. However, the synthesis of nanofoams is still challenging. This work introduces a non-complex synthesis method of Pd nanofoams employing a polar lipid structured as a sponge phase in water. The Pd nanostructures were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), N 2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), and X-Ray Absorption Near Edge Structure (XANES) at Pd K edge techniques. The morphology of the nanostructure, from nanofoam to nanoparticle, is easily controlled by the presence of the polar lipid and the Pd salt used. The Pd nanostructures synthesized are fully oxidized, but the nanofoams reduce quickly (less than 5 minutes) to metallic Pd after H 2 exposure at room temperature. The nanostructures were applied for hydrogen storage and Pd nanofoams achieved a remarkable gravimetric capacity of 0.76 wt.% at room temperature and 1 atm H 2 pressure. DFT calculation showed that the changes in the morphology of Pd lead to great changes in the adsorption energy of hydrogen, thus allowing the improvement of the material for hydrogen storage applications through the method developed.

Synergistic Electronic Interaction in PdCu Alloy/TiO2-NSs for Ambient Efficient Dehydrogenation of Formic Acid.

Abstract:Palladium-based catalysts are remarkable in endorsing hydrogen (H2) generation through formic acid (HCOOH, FA) dehydrogenation under near-ambient conditions. Hydrogen energy efficiency depends on high-performance catalyst design. In this study, Pd-Cu nanoalloy catalysts with mutable atomic ratios are successfully fabricated on TiO2 nanosheets (TiO2-NSs).The synergistic electronic interactions between Palladium (Pd) and copper (Cu) are revealed through a density of states (DOS) analysis of alloy supported over a mixed valence state of Ti linked to oxygen vacancies (Vo) in TiO2-NSs, Enhanced adsorption of target molecules reveals novel active sites for Formic acid dehydrogenation (FAD), with O─H bond cleavage via HCOO formate intermediate preceding C─H and C─O bond cleavage. Experimental and theoretical research demonstrates that the Pd-Cu/TiO2-NSs (3:7) catalyst d electron redistribution and d-band center shift lower the activation energy for O─H bond cleavage, exhibit superior H2 production than pure Pd and Cu, increasing Pd electron density due to synergistic effects from reactive crystal facets, defects, and strong metal support interactions (SMSI), lowering the activation energy for HCOOH dissociation step, generating carbon dioxide (CO2) and H2 with a unprecedented high turnover frequency (TOF) of 6268 molH2.h-1.molPd-1 at 303K with activation energy (Ea) of 15 KJ mol-1. This attempt models an efficient HCOOH-to-hydrogen catalyst.

Abstract:Metal-containing nanocrystals with well-designed surface structures represent a class of model systems for revealing the fundamental physical and chemical processes involved in heterogeneous catalysis. Herein it is shown how surface modification can be utilized as an efficient strategy for controlling the surface electronic state of catalysts and, thus, for tuning their catalytic activity. As model catalysts, the Pd-tetrahedron-TiO2 nanostructures, modified on the surface with different foreign atoms, showed a varied activity in the catalytic decomposition of formic acid towards H2 production. The catalytic activity increases with a reduction in the work function of modified atoms; this reduction can be well explained by a surface polarization mechanism. In this hybrid system, the difference in the work functions of Pd and modified atoms results in surface polarization on the Pd surface and, thus, in the tuning of its charge state. Together with the Schottky junction between TiO2 and metals, the tuned charge state enables the promotion of catalytic efficiency in the catalytic decomposition of formic acid to H2 and CO2 .
