Abstract:In light of significant efforts being taken toward manned deep space exploration, it is of high technological importance and scientific interest to develop the lunar life support system for long-term exploration. Lunar in situ resource utilization offers a great opportunity to provide the material basis of life support for lunar habitation and traveling. Based on the analysis of the structure and composition, Chang’E-5 lunar soil sample has the potential for lunar solar energy conversion, i.e., extraterrestrial photosynthetic catalysts. By evaluating the performance of the Chang’E-5 lunar sample as photovoltaic-driven electrocatalyst, photocatalyst, and photothermal catalyst, full water splitting and CO2 conversion are able to be achieved by solar energy, water, and lunar soil, with a range of target product for lunar life, including O2, H2, CH4, and CH3OH. Thus, we propose a potentially available extraterrestrial photosynthesis pathway on the moon, which will help us to achieve a “zero-energy consumption” extraterrestrial life support system.

Abstract:The issue of climate change attributed to CO2 emissions has led to increased attention towards the study and development of artificial photosynthesis through photocatalytic CO2 conversion to reconstruct the broken carbon cycle in nature. Photocatalytic CO2 conversion can simultaneously reduce the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and produce valuable hydrocarbon fuels. With the recent discovery of abundant reserves of CO2 and water at extraterrestrial sites, it has been proposed that photocatalytic CO2 conversion can also be implemented at extraterrestrial sites to build up an artificial carbon cycle for providing propellants and life support for space missions. This comment presents our perspectives on the development of photocatalytic CO2 conversion beyond Earth, with a focus on its general principles and potential challenges that may arise at extraterrestrial sites. Finally, a brief overview of the future research directions in this field is presented.

Abstract:Artificial photosynthesis shows a promising potential for sustainable supply of nutritional ingredients. While most studies focus on the assembly of the light-sensitive chromophores to 1-D architectures in an artificial photosynthesis system, other supramolecular morphologies, especially bioinspired ones, which may have more efficient light harvesting properties, have been far less studied. Here, MCpP-FF, a bioinspired building block fabricated by conjugating porphyrin and diphenylalanine, was designed to self-assemble into nanofibers-based multiporous microspheres. The highly organized aromatic moieties result in extensive excitation red-shifts and notable electron transfer, thus leading to a remarkable attenuated fluorescence decay and broad-spectrum light 'sensitivity of the microspheres. Moreover, the enhanced photoelectron production and transfer capability of the microspheres are demonstrated, making them ideal candidates for sunlight-sensitive antennas in artificial photosynthesis. These properties induce a high turnover frequency of NADH, which can be used to produce bioproducts in biocatalytic reactions. In addition, the direct electron transfer makes external mediators unnecessary, and the insolubility of the microspheres in water allows their easy retrieval for sustainable applications. Our findings demonstrate an alternative to design new platforms for artificial photosynthesis, as well as a new type of bioinspired, supramolecular multiporous materials.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Building up a lunar settlement is the ultimate aim of lunar exploitation. Yet, limited fuel and oxygen supplies restrict human survival on the Moon. Herein, we demonstrate the in situ resource utilization of lunar soil for extraterrestrial fuel and oxygen production, which may power up our solely natural satellite and supply respiratory gas. Specifically, the lunar soil is loaded with Cu species and employed for electrocatalytic CO2 conversion, demonstrating significant production of methane. In addition, the selected component in lunar soil (i.e. MgSiO3) loaded with Cu can reach a CH4 Faradaic efficiency of 72.05% with a CH4 production rate of 0.8 mL/min at 600 mA/cm2. Simultaneously, an O2 production rate of 2.3 mL/min can be achieved. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our developed process starting from catalyst preparation to electrocatalytic CO2 conversion is so accessible that it can be operated in an unmmaned manner via a robotic system. Such a highly efficient extraterrestrial fuel and oxygen production system is expected to push forward the development of mankind's civilization toward an extraterrestrial settlement.

Geological processes and products recorded in lunar soils: A review

Abstract:Lunar soil is an important material to study the surface processes on airless bodies, and the geological evolution of the Moon. Since the Apollo era, considerable progresses in lunar soil research have been achieved, including the origin, composition, and properties of the soil. The results from early research have already been summarized and reviewed. With the lunar soil samples returned by the Chang'E-5 mission, all research concerning the Moon has drawn unprecedented attention in China. Therefore, it is timely to summarize the latest advances related to lunar soil research. The lunar soils represent the interior materials that were modified by external processes after formation. This paper reviews the latest achievements of lunar soil from two aspects: the space weathering and the lunar evolution. The space weathering of lunar soil includes the interaction between the soil on the Moon's surface and the materials and energy (such as meteorites, solar wind, and cosmic rays) outside of the Moon, which has also recorded the evolution of the solar system. The effects of space weathering on the surface of the Moon are discussed with respect to the water, volatiles (carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, fluorine, sulfur, chlorine, and noble gas), nanophase minerals (npFe and npSiO(x)), and micrometeorites and meteorite fragments in lunar soil. The contents of water in lunar soil are much higher than those of basalt. However, the water in lunar soil is much more depleted in deuterium than that of basalt. This striking contrast suggests that hydroxyl in the lunar soil mainly results from the implantation of hydrogen ions in the solar wind. On the other hand, volatiles in lunar soil could have originated from various sources, including lunar interior, solar wind, cosmic rays, and even Earth wind. The contributions of the sources for each volatile are different, evidenced by the isotopic composition of the respective volatile. The npFe grains in lunar soil can alter the surface optical spectra of the Moon. It has been demonstrated that the npFe grains are the product of vapor deposit generated by charged particle puttering and/or micrometeorite impact followed by re-condensation of metallic iron. Micrometeorite impacts have not only caused crushing and mixing of lunar soil particles, but also resulted in partial melting and volatilization of lunar soil, leading to the escape and possible redeposition of volatiles on the lunar surface and thus increasing the maturity of lunar soil. Therefore, the npFe concentration is often used as a parameter to represent the maturity of the lunar regolith. On the other hand, the lunar soil can be used to study the evolution of the Moon. This paper mainly reviews the bulk compositions of lunar soil, and the volcanic glasses and lithic clasts as well. The last 60-year study of lunar soil has revealed the main contributors of the soil on the Moon. The chemical and isotopic compositions of bulk soil can be used to reveal the genesis and trace the material sources of lunar soil. The volcanic glasses in lunar soil are products generated by magmatism on the Moon and have recorded the magmatic processes and the mantle compositions. The glass beads with various compositions (and thus colors) in lunar soil are intensively studied to explore the crystallization differentiation and degassing processes of early lunar magma. The lithic clasts have unique scientific significance in revealing the origin and evolution of the parent rocks of lunar soil, in which, anorthosite clasts can be utilized to explore the formation of the lunar crust, whereas basalt clasts play an irreplaceable role in studying the diversity of lunar magma and the evolution of the lunar mantle. Finally, this paper summarizes the related research on the utilization of lunar soil as resources, including metal, and water as well as energy (such as helium, uranium, and thorium), and lunar soil molding. The early study on lunar soil can provide important references for studying the soil samples returned by Chang'E-5 mission. Therefore, this review could facilitate the ongoing research of lunar soil and future lunar exploration of China.

Abstract:The photometric properties of the uppermost lunar regolith are used in the spectroscopic study. China's Chang'E-5 (CE-5) mission successfully landed in the Northern Oceanus Procellarum of the Moon, carrying the scientific payload Lunar Mineralogical Spectrometer (LMS). LMS performed full-view scanning and obtained the reflectance spectra in various geometric configurations. The photometric properties, including the single-scattering albedo ω and two parameters of the Henyey-Greenstein phase function ( b , c ), were derived. Our modeling results showed weak backward scattering and strong forward scattering properties of the regolith at the CE-5 landing site. Meanwhile, the asymmetry parameter indicates that CE-5 regolith has weaker forward scattering than the Apollo lunar soil samples and the regolith at the Chang'E-4 landing site. The derived Hapke parameters can be used for comparison with that of the returned lunar sample, supporting further studies of lunar spectroscopy, and can be the ground truth of the CE-5 landing area.

Abstract:Harvesting oxygen and metals from the local resources of the Moon is a key step to advancing outer space exploration. A large amount of oxygen is stored in the lunar regolith in the form of oxides. Many efforts have been devoted to electrochemically splitting oxides to oxygen and metals in molten oxides and molten salts. However, a cheap oxygen-evolution inert anode is still a serious challenge, especially in the supercorrosive molten halides. Herein, we combine a molten CaCl2 electrolyzer that can convert Chang’e-5 lunar regolith simulants to metals and CO2 using a carbon anode and a molten carbonate electrolyzer that can convert the generated CO2 to carbon and oxygen using a cheap Ni11Fe10Cu oxygen-evolution anode. Further, the electrolytic carbon is reused as the anode in the molten CaCl2 electrolyzer, thereby closing the carbon cycle. Hence, the overall electrochemical reaction of the dual-electrolyzer system is to convert lunar regolith to metals and oxygen. More broadly, this system can convert the CO2 generated by humans living on the Moon and Mars to oxygen and carbon materials.

Chang'E‐5 In Situ Spectra Reveal Photometric Properties of the Lunar Surface

Abstract:Abstract The Chang’E‐5 (CE‐5) lunar mineralogical spectrometer (LMS) obtained an in situ multiangular spectral data set, with which this work aims to study the photometric properties of the lunar surface in the CE‐5 sampling area. We first converted the LMS Level 2B radiance data to reflectance, and then spliced it and processed thermal correction. We also used a millimeter‐scale digital elevation model (DEM) to re‐calculate local illumination and observation conditions considering the high‐resolution topography at the landing site. We analyzed the multiangular reflectance data set with a Hapke modeling approach aimed at characterizing the scattering properties of the surface. In particular, we found that the surface exhibits a spectral signature typical of mafic materials and is close to the mature mare lunar soil. The position of the in situ photometric parameters in the hockey stick diagram indicates that CE‐5 lunar soil particles are forward scattering, irregular and with a low density of internal scatters. Furthermore, we found that all the in situ data (including CE‐3/4/5) and laboratory measurements exhibit forward scattering properties, but the orbiter remote sensing measurements are backward scattering. We attribute this discrepancy to the different resolution of the two data sets: the in situ analysis focuses on the individual particles, whereas remote sensing approach is sensitive to the particle complex. The Hapke parameters we derived can provide a reference for the further comprehensive analysis of remote sensing and in situ spectral data, especially, caution is advised when applying the photometric parameters derived from in situ or laboratory spectra to the remote sensing data.

Abstract:This study reviews major sensing technologies for the Lunar environment and its resources, as they have been developed since the times of Apollo missions. Selected technologies of sensors and instruments for the chemical, isotopic, and structural analysis of Lunar rocks and regoliths, as well as of the Lunar exosphere environment, are presented in a critical review towards an optimised and information-rich framework. Special focus is given on the activated Lunar regolith, and especially the Lunar dust, describing the development of Lunar simulants as the only accessible materials for experimentation and testing of the above technologies. New technologies are also highlighted, such as the development of the OxR microfluidic and spectroscopy integrated device, which, in its small scale aims to detect reactive oxygen species in the Lunar regolith, while in its larger format it is used to release oxygen gas from the Lunar dust and regolith, enabling astronaut respiration and fuel production on the Moon. It is finally suggested that miniaturisation of instruments and sensors, together with the standardisation of output information and characterisation protocols through holistic informational frameworks, will enhance the dynamic expansion and further integration and interoperation of sensors and devices, aiming to an efficient, safer, and resilient utilisation on the Moon and the establishment of sustainable settlements in the near future.

Abstract:China's Chang'E-5 (CE-5) mission has successfully landed in the Northern Oceanus Procellarum of the Moon. Lunar mineralogical spectrometer (LMS), as one of the important payloads onboard CE-5 Lander–Ascender Combination, aims to study the physical and compositional properties of the landing area. This paper applies the Legendre phase function to correct the photometric effects on the LMS in situ spectra and reveal the photometric characteristic of the CE-5 landing area. LMS obtained the reflectance spectra in various geometric configurations by performing full-view scanning of the CE-5 landing area. By fitting these LMS spectral data, the parameters b=−0.29 and c=0.44 of the Legendre phase function were obtained. This indicates the strong forward scattering characteristic of the CE-5 landing area, which is similar to that of the Chang'E-4 (CE-4) landing area, and the side scattering is weaker than that of CE-4. In addition, we derived the FeO content of the landing area using the photometric-corrected LMS spectral data. Our results demonstrate that the estimated FeO content of the landing area is close to the laboratory measured data of the returned samples. The LMS in situ reflectance data will contribute to a better understanding of the physical and mineralogical properties of the CE-5 landing area.

The scientific importance of the lunar environment

Abstract:Many plans are in preparation to land robotic missions on the surface of the Moon, which will pave the way to return humans to the lunar surface and set the stage for an ongoing human presence. Artemis is a NASA-led international effort to return humans to the Moon. One of the goals of Artemis is to use innovative technologies to address priority science objectives. At the same time, the European Space Agency (ESA) is exploring designs for a Moon base to enable ongoing human activity on the lunar surface. Furthermore, China plans to land humans on the Moon by 2030. In situ resource utilization ( ISRU )—the extraction of useful materials from the Moon itself—will be beneficial for efforts to sustain a human presence. ISRU could provide water that can be used by astronauts or split into hydrogen and oxygen rocket fuel for returning to Earth or moving onward to Mars, along with other vital resources. Although this possibility is exciting, it is critical that we recognize how human and robotic activity will affect the lunar environment . Not having a global strategy to characterize lunar volatile materials before their scientific value is lost will substantially degrade the Moon's scientific potential.

Abstract:Human deep space exploration is presented with multiple challenges, such as the reliable, efficient and sustainable operation of life support systems. The production and recycling of oxygen, carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) and fuels are hereby key, as a resource resupply will not be possible. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) devices are investigated for the light-assisted production of hydrogen and carbon-based fuels from CO 2 within the green energy transition on Earth. Their monolithic design and the sole reliance on solar energy makes them attractive for applications in space. Here, we establish the framework to evaluate PEC device performances on Moon and Mars. We present a refined Martian solar irradiance spectrum and establish the thermodynamic and realistic efficiency limits of solar-driven lunar water-splitting and Martian carbon dioxide reduction (CO 2 R) devices. Finally, we discuss the technological viability of PEC devices in space by assessing the performance combined with solar concentrator devices and explore their fabrication via in-situ resource utilization.

Abstract:Since the landing on the lunar surface, the lunar regolith has begun to interact in different ways with landed elements, such as the wheels of a rover, astronaut suits, drills, and plants for extracting oxygen or manufacturing objects. Therefore, a strong effort has been required on Earth to fully characterise these kinds of interactions and regolith utilisation methods. This operation can only be performed by using regolith simulants, soils that are reproduced with the Earth's rocks and minerals to match the real features. This article presents the main guidelines and tests for obtaining the properties of a generic simulant in terms of composition, physical and mechanical properties, solid–fluid interaction, and thermal properties. These parameters are needed for the designing and testing of payloads under development for planned lunar surface missions. The same tests can be performed on lunar, martian, or asteroid simulants/soils, both in laboratory and in situ. A case study is presented on the lunar simulant NU-LHT-2M, representative of the lunar highlands. The tests are performed in the context of an in situ resource utilisation (ISRU) process that aims to extract oxygen from the lunar regolith using a low-temperature carbothermal reduction process, highlighting the main regolith-related criticalities for an in situ demonstrator plant.

Abstract:The extent of volatile elements on the surface and interior of the Moon remains a highly debated topic. Previous studies conducted on bulk lunar soil samples and solar wind samples collected by the Genesis mission indicate a discernible isotope mass- or non-mass-dependent fractionation of krypton and xenon. However, a detailed investigation of these processes is missing, particularly in determining the possible incorporation of cometary volatiles in the lunar regolith. New lunar soil samples returned by the Chang'e-5 mission provide a chance to answer these key questions. In this study, noble gas isotopes of nine subsamples from a Chang'e-5 scooped sample were analysed through stepwise-heating and total fusion laser extraction. The results reveal that a simple binary mixture of solar wind and cosmogenic components did not explain alone the isotopic composition of these samples. The Xe data shows insignificant amounts of atmospheric Xe and presents clear evidence of cometary contributions to the lunar regolith, with a significant depletion of 134,136 Xe compared to that in the solar wind. Additionally, a meteoritic component is identified. Compared to the Apollo results, our findings further validate the theory of Earth's atmospheric escape, substantiate the plausibility of these exogenous admixtures to elucidate the isotopic fractionation mechanisms of Kr and Xe within the lunar regolith, and provide novel insights into long-term constancy in the solar wind composition.

Abstract:Significance In solar-terrestrial systems, solar energy input has long been recognized to have a profound impact on Earth. The well-known photosynthetic systems enable sustainable solar-to-chemical energy conversion. However, no evidence has yet emerged for the existence of a widespread geological light-harvesting system. This study reveals such a “photoelectric device,” where semiconducting Fe- and Mn (oxyhydr)oxide-mineral coatings are found to overlay vast expanses of natural rock/soil surfaces and exhibit highly responsive and stable photon-to-electron conversion. Our discovery may provide insight supporting vital photon-induced redox chemistry on Earth’s surface via widespread Fe- and Mn-mineral coatings.

Abstract:Significance Natural photosynthesis, a process of solar-to-chemical conversion, uses light, water, and carbon dioxide to generate the chemical products needed to sustain life. Here we report a strategy inspired by photosynthesis in which compatible inorganic and biological components are used to transform light, water, and carbon dioxide to the value-added product methane. Specifically, this solar-to-chemical conversion platform interfaces photoactive inorganic materials that produce hydrogen from water and sunlight with microorganisms that consume this sustainably derived hydrogen to drive the transformation of carbon dioxide to methane with high efficiency. This system establishes a starting point for a broader materials biology approach to the synthesis of more complex chemical products from carbon dioxide and water.
Photosynthesis on exoplanets and exomoons from reflected light

Abstract:Photosynthesis offers a convenient means of sustaining biospheres. We quantify the constraints for photosynthesis to be functional on the permanent nightside of tidally locked rocky exoplanets via reflected light from their exomoons. We show that the exomoons must be at least half the size of Earth's moon in order for conventional oxygenic photosynthesis to operate. This scenario of photosynthesis is unlikely for exoplanets around late-type M-dwarfs due to the low likelihood of large exomoons and their orbital instability over long timescales. Subsequently, we investigate the prospects for photosynthesis on habitable exomoons via reflected light from the giant planets that they orbit. Our analysis indicates that such photosynthetic biospheres are potentially sustainable on these moons except those around late-type M-dwarfs. We conclude our analysis by delineating certain physiological and biochemical features of photosynthesis and other carbon fixation pathways, and the likelihood of their evolution on habitable planets and moons.

Mineral Processing and Extractive Metallurgy Review

Abstract:The lunar surface is extremely harsh and current mineral processing and metal extraction technologies are not adequately equipped to address this environment. In this paper, we review the metals available for extraction and conditions at the lunar surface, and analyze the challenges associated with comminution, beneficiation, and metal extraction operations. The potential beneficial effects of the natural lunar conditions are also evaluated. This investigation concludes that process plant design on the lunar surface will favor lightweight, schematically simple flow sheets that enable automation, and that utilize the local environment wherever possible. The elimination of traditional comminution and beneficiation stages and their replacement with basic classification could be economically favorable. The most promising metal reduction pathways are identified as molten regolith electrolysis, and vacuum thermal dissociation, other processes with merit are hydrogen reduction, carbothermal reduction, and solid electrolysis. Finally, it is identified that a significant research effort in all areas of astrometallurgy will be required before industrial-sized extra-terrestrial mineral processing and metal extraction operations will be viable.

Abstract:Abstract Lunar surface chemistry is essential for revealing petrological characteristics to understand the evolution of the Moon. Existing chemistry mapping from Apollo and Luna returned samples could only calibrate chemical features before 3.0 Gyr, missing the critical late period of the Moon. Here we present major oxides chemistry maps by adding distinctive 2.0 Gyr Chang’e-5 lunar soil samples in combination with a deep learning-based inversion model. The inferred chemical contents are more precise than the Lunar Prospector Gamma-Ray Spectrometer (GRS) maps and are closest to returned samples abundances compared to existing literature. The verification of in situ measurement data acquired by Chang'e 3 and Chang'e 4 lunar rover demonstrated that Chang’e-5 samples are indispensable ground truth in mapping lunar surface chemistry. From these maps, young mare basalt units are determined which can be potential sites in future sample return mission to constrain the late lunar magmatic and thermal history.
