Abstract:Over the past few years, the emission of organic pollutants into the environment has increased tremendously. Therefore, various photocatalysts have been developed for the degradation of organic pollutants. In this study, a step-scheme BiVO4/Ag3VO4 composite was synthesized via a hydrothermal and chemical deposition process for the degradation of methylene blue.The composite showed strong redox ability under visible light. The 40%BiVO4/Ag3VO4 composite showed excellent photocatalytic degradation properties with a Kapp of 0.05588 min−1, which is 22.76 and 1.76 times higher than those of BiVO4 (0.00247 min−1) and Ag3VO4 (0.03167 min−1), respectively. The composite showed a stable performance and could retain 90% of its photocatalytic activity even after four cycles. The improved catalytic performance of the composite as compared to BiVO4 and Ag3VO4 can be attributed to its novel step-scheme mechanism, which facilitated the separation of the photogenerated charges and increased their lifetime. The photoluminescence measurement results and transient photocurrent response revealed that the composite showed efficient extraction of charge carriers.

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) powders were synthesized by homogeneous precipitation method with different surface dispersants. Bi(NO3)3·5H2O and NH4VO3 were utilized as starting materials to synthesize BiVO4 particles with the edge length of about 100–150nm. Bismuth oxide (Bi2O3) was prepared by decomposing Bi(NO3)3·5H2O at 600°C. Techniques of X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–vis DRS) have been employed to characterize the as-synthesized materials. The results showed that the structure and morphology of BiVO4 were various using different surface dispersant. We have also investigated the photocatalytic degradation of rhodamin B which showed that BiVO4/Bi2O3 possessed a high photocatalytic activity under visible-light irradiation. The photocatalytic activity is in close relation with the surface dispersant about BiVO4 synthesis. The result was better using N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) than using N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone. The inverse proportion between BiVO4 and Bi2O3 was also important for the photocatalysis.

Abstract:A series of M–BiVO4 (M=Ag, Co, and Ni) particles were successfully prepared by amorphous heteronuclear complex precursor. The particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), scanning electron microscope (SEM), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and Raman spectra. The results showed that the crystallized M–BiVO4 had a monoclinic phase with the hybrid metals, namely Co and Ni being attached on BiVO4 particles in the form of oxides mainly. The M–BiVO4 photocatalysts were responsive to visible light. Photodegradation of both methyl blue and 2,4-dichlorophenol over M–BiVO4 composites was observed at wavelength >420nm. Co–BiVO4 exhibited the best photocatalytic efficiency, with a decoloration percent of about 85% after 2-h irradiation (at λ>420nm). Nearly 90% of 2,4-dichlorophenol was removed in 5h. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study confirmed that superoxide and hydroxide radicals were formed under light irradiation and might be responsible for the degradation of the organic compound.
Preparation, Characterization and Photocatalytic Mechanism of Ag2CO3/BiVO4 Composite Microsheets

Abstract:BiVO4 microsheets with particle size of 1 similar to 2 mu m were fabricated by hydrothermal method. Then, Ag2CO3/BiVO4 composite microsheet photocatalysts with different contents of Ag2CO3 were synthesized via precipitation method. The products were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy, transient photocurrent-time response. The photocatalytic activity of the samples were evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. The results showed that loading of Ag2CO3 was beneficial to improve the specific surface area and surface properties of the catalyst. Activity test indicated that BiVO4 loaded with optimal 10%(w/w)Ag2CO3 resulted in 4.4 times increase in activity with respect to BiVO4 under visible light illumination. The results of photoluminescence (PL) emission spectroscopy and transient photocurrent-time response showed that the coupled Ag2CO3 can effectively inhibit the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Active radicals trapping experiments indicated that hole and hydroxyl radicals were the reactive oxygen species in this Ag2CO3/BiVO4 system. The enhancement in activity of Ag2CO3/BiVO4 could be attributed to the heterojunction structure formed by Ag2CO3 with wider band gap and BiVO4 with narrower band gap. This heterojunction effectively restrained the recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes. Moreover, the suitable energy band structure brought about strong oxidation ability due to more holes were produced.
CuCoOx/BiVO4 Multifunctional Catalyst for Organics Degradation, Water Oxidation, and O2 Reduction under Visible Light

Abstract:Monoclinic BiVO4 (BiV) is an excellent photoanode for water oxidation, but it is a poor photocatalyst for organic oxidation due to slow O2 reduction. Herein we report a 94-fold increased photocatalytic activity of BiV through a surface deposited CuCoOx. The model reaction was phenol degradation in aqueous solution under visible light. CuCoOx, CuOx, and CoOx were prepared in butanol, separately, while CuCo2O4 was prepared in aqueous solution. Solid characterization showed that CuCo2O4 was Cu0.92Co2.08O4, but CuCoOx was a mixture of Cu0.92Co2.08O4, CuOx, and CoOx. Notably, the rate of phenol oxidation on CuCoOx/BiV was not only larger than those on Pt/BiV, CuCo2O4/BiV, CuOx/BiV, and CoOx/BiV, but also larger than the sum of the rates obtained for the latter three. Photoluminescence study revealed that all co-catalysts improved the efficiency of charge separation of BiV, with the trend similar to that for phenol photo-oxidation. Electrochemical study with a BiV film electrode showed that among four co-catalysts, CuOx was the most active for O2 reduction, CoOx for water oxidation, and CuCo2O4 for water photo-oxidation. According to the measured band edge potentials for semiconductors, a possible charge transfer from BiV to co-catalyst is proposed, including the electron transfer for CuOx/BiV, the hole transfer for CoOx/BiV and CuCo2O4/BiV, and the sequential electron transfer for CuCoOx/BiV.

BiTaO4 possess similar degradation ability of TiO2-xNx under visible-light irradiation (lambda > 420 nm) Density functional calculations revealed that Bi 6s orbitals contributed to the formation of valence band, resulting in narrowing the band gap Moreover, comparing with BiNbO4, we found BiTaO4 showed photocorrosion suppression performance during the photocatalytic process. The differences in the photocorrosion suppression between BiTaO4 and BiNbO4 could be attributed to the conduction curvature and bandwidth, leading to differences in the mobility of photogenerated electrons formed in the conduction bands, which mainly consisted of Ta 5d and Nb 4d orbitals, respectively

Abstract:A visible-light responsive photocatalyst consisting of Ag–AgCl composite dispersed over BiVO4 (Ag–AgCl/BiVO4) was synthesized via a photolysis and calcination method. The effects of synthetic conditions such as Ag contents, molar ratios of chlorine to silver and calcination temperatures have been discussed. The coupling Ag–AgCl composite structure, which is necessary for the high photoactivity, comes into being by partially converting Ag nanoclusters into AgCl during heat treatment. The discoloration efficiency of methyl orange over the as-prepared Ag–AgCl/BiVO4 was more than 90% after 120min under visible light irradiation. In the Ag–AgCl/BiVO4 system, the coupled processes of excitation from valence band of AgCl to the sensitizer Ag nanoparticles and the surface plasmonic resonance of Ag nanoparticles mainly contributed to its high activity. In addition, the presence of BiVO4 changed the hole transfer process, and O2− became to be the solely main active specie in the degradation reaction. The photocatalytic activity can be further improved by the addition of hole scavengers.

Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is one of the best bismuth-based semiconducting materials because of its narrow band gap energy, good visible light absorption, unique physical and chemical characteristics, and non-toxic nature. In addition, BiVO4 with different morphologies has been synthesized and exhibited excellent visible light photocatalytic efficiency in the degradation of various organic pollutants, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Nevertheless, the commercial scale utilization of BiVO4 is significantly limited because of the poor separation (faster recombination rate) and transport ability of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. So, engineering/modifications of BiVO4 materials are performed to enhance their structural, electronic, and morphological properties. Thus, this review article aims to provide a critical overview of advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), various semiconducting nanomaterials, BiVO4 synthesis methodologies, engineering of BiVO4 properties through making binary and ternary nanocomposites, and coupling with metals/non-metals and metal nanoparticles and the development of Z-scheme type nanocomposites, etc., and their visible light photocatalytic efficiency in VOCs degradation. In addition, future challenges and the way forward for improving the commercial-scale application of BiVO4-based semiconducting nanomaterials are also discussed. Thus, we hope that this review is a valuable resource for designing BiVO4-based nanocomposites with superior visible-light-driven photocatalytic efficiency in VOCs degradation.

Abstract:BiVO4 films deposited on Fluorine doped tin oxide glass substrates were successfully prepared by a modified chemical solution deposition process. Structure and optical spectrum analysis show that the resultant BiVO4 films consist entirely of monoclinic scheelite structure and have a narrow band gap of similar to 2.66 eV. The films were investigated by photoelectrochemical and photovoltaic measurements with regard to hydrogen production and solar energy conversion under visible light. The BiVO4 photoanodes show significantly higher visible light induced photoelectrochemical performance (similar to 1.1 mA/cm(2) at 1.0 V vs. Ag/AgCl) than those reported ones, which is very promising for splitting water to H-2 and O-2. A Schottky BiVO4 solar cell was also investigated for comparison with photoelectrochemical measurements. The correlation between the photoelectrochemical and photovoltaic behavior for BiVO4 was explained. Our research should provide important support for the applications of BiVO4 films or its modified forms such as doping and nanocomposite in heterojunction photoelectrochemical cells and solar cells with suitable energy level alignment at the interface. Abstract:Bismuth vanadate (BiVO4) is a promising photocatalyst for water pollution degradation and photocatalytic oxygen evolution. In this work, we prepared 2D/2D BiVO4-Bi4V2O10 heterostructure with tight interfacial contact via a facile one-step hydrothermal process. The crystal structure and morphology of the samples could be easily regulated by changing the pH values of the solution. The BiVO4-Bi4V2O10 heterostructure exhibited an enhanced photodegradation rate of Cr(VI) and oxygen evolution that of bare BiVO4, indicating that the synergistic effect and the interfacial fusions between BiVO4 and Bi4V2O10 can effectively promote the migration and separation rate of photoexcited charge carriers.

Highly Efficient Z-scheme Structured Visible-Light Photocatalyst Constructed by Selective Doping of Ag@AgBr and Co3O4 Separately on {010} and {110} Facets of BiVO4: Pre-separation Channel and Hole-Sink Effects

Abstract:To improve the visible-light photocatalytic activity and photo-carriers separation of BiVO4, highly efficient Z scheme structured visible-light photocatalyst Ag@AgBr/BiVO4/Co3O4 was constructed by selective doping of Ag@AgBr and Co3O4 on {010} and {110} facets of BiVO4. Due to the different energy levels of conduction band (CB) and valence band (VB) between {010} facet and {110} facet, BiVO4 could act as the 'pre-separation channel' to achieve spatial charge separation. Such pre-separation channel effect improved photo-electrons transfer from BiVO4(010) facets to electron mediator (Ag) for subsequent recombination with holes of AgBr. Thus, the photo-induced electrons of AgBr could be accumulated on CB for reduction of O-2 to O-center dot(2)-. On the other hand, holes of BiVO4 accumulated on {110} facets were captured by deriving-hole-type co-catalysts Co3O4 for organics oxidation. In addition, Ag not only served as the electron mediator of Z-scheme but also improve the visible-light utilization due to SPR-effect. Being attributed to the synergistic effect of pre-separation channel and deriving-hole-type co-catalysts, Z-scheme structured Ag@AgBr/BiVO4/Co3O4(0.15 wt%) achieved high photo-degradation rate of organics. Even after 9th cycles, Ag@AgBr/BiVO4/Co3O4(0.15 wt%) could still photo degraded more than 90% of OTC within 24 min. DRS, PL and photoelectrochemical analyses also confirmed the improvement of visible-light utilization and charge separation of Ag@AgBr/BiVO4/Co3O4. The radical trapping experiments and EPR demonstrated that both superoxide radical (O-center dot(2)-) and holes (h(+)) were main active species for organics photodegradation. In summary, this work not only constructed a highly efficient Z-scheme structured visible-light photocatalyst, but also provided a new method to diminish the photo-carriers recombination by pre-separation channel and hole-sink effects.
Optical Properties and Visible Light-Driven Photocatalytic Activity of Bi11VO19 Nanoparticles with Δ-Bi2o3-structure

Abstract:The delta-Bi2O3-structural Bi11VO19 nanoparticles with the average size of similar to 70 nm were fabricated through the Pechini method for a possible photocatalytic application. The crystal structure was investigated by Xray powder diffraction (XRD) and the structural refinement. The as-synthesized sample was also characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), UV-vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence measurements. The experimental results demonstrate that Bi11VO19 nanoparticles have an efficient visible light absorption with band-gap energy of 2.23 eV. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the photodegradation of the methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation (k > 420 nm) as a function of time. All the results indicate that Bi11VO19 could be a potential photocatalyst driven by visible-light. Preparation and Optical Properties of BiVO4/SiO2 Composite

Abstract:BiVO4/SiO2 composites were fabricated by a simple and facile chemical precipitation process using Bi(NO3)3,NH4VO3 and Na2SiO3 as raw materials.The microstructure,phase composition and UV-visible absorption properties of the as-synthesized BiVO4/SiO2 composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy,X-ray diffraction and UV-visible absorption spectra.UV-visible absorption measurements show that the as-prepared BiVO4/SiO2 composites present a broad absorption peak in a wide range from UV to visible light and the band gap is 2.39 eV.The photocatalytic activity of BiVO4 and BiVO4/SiO2 composites were characterized by degradation of methylene blue solution.The results indicate that the BiVO4/SiO2 composites show excellent photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:BiVO4/TiO2 has been synthesized via a sol-gel method and a facile hydrothermal route by adjusting the precursor hydrolysis rate with the use of different acids (CH3COOH, HNO3 and H2SO4). The influence of these acids on the physicochemical characteristics and photocatalytic performance is investigated. BiVO4/TiO2 synthesized in CH3COOH has better photocatalytic activity for the degradation of gaseous benzene than that in HNO3 and H2SO4 under visible light irradiation. Results of XPS measurement demonstrate that more active hydroxyl groups in BiVO4/TiO2-CH3COOH could lead to higher photocatalytic activity.

Abstract:BiVO4/TiO2 nanocomposites were fabricated by a facile wet-chemical process, followed by the synthesis of TiO2 hierarchical spheres via hydrothermal method. The BiVO4/TiO2 nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results showed that prepared TiO2 presented hierarchical spherical morphology self-assembled by nanoparticles and an anatase–brookite mixed crystal phase. The introduction of monoclinic BiVO4 components retained the hierarchical structures and expanded the light response to around 510 nm. Type II BiVO4/TiO2 heterostructured nanocomposites exhibited improved photocatalytic degradation towards methylene blue under visible-light irradiation, especially for the composite photocatalysts with atomic Ti/Bi = 10, which showed double degradation rate than that of pure BiVO4. The enhanced photocatalytic mechanism of the heterostructured BiVO4/TiO2 nanocomposites was discussed as well.

Abstract:Constructing oxygen vacancies (Ov) has been widely used to enhance photocatalytic activity as a conventional and efficient approach, but its influence on the interfacial charge transfer pathway remains ambiguous. Herein, we synthesized BiVO4/BiOBr-Ov (BVB-Ov) photocatalysts through a facile method. Subsequently, various characterization results verified the successful preparation of BVB-Ov composites via combining BiVO4 with BiOBr containing oxygen vacancies (BiOBr-Ov). The results of photocatalytic degradation experiments illustrated that 20% BVB-Ov exhibited the highest degradation rate (91%) for Oxytetracycline (OTC), which was much higher than that of 20% BiVO4/BiOBr (71%). In addition, three possible degradation pathways were deduced from liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) analysis. Photoelectrochemical, photoluminescence (PL) and time-resolved PL (TRPL) investigation revealed that 20% BVB-Ov possessed the fastest photogenerated carrier separation and transportation rate. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) technology and Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have shown that the introduction of oxygen vacancies modulated the relative positions of the Fermi levels between BiVO4 and BiOBr. We have finally combined DFT calculations, energy band analysis, trapping experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results, confirming that the existence of oxygen vacancies led to altering the photogenerated carrier transfer path from type-II to Z-scheme. This work provided insights and guidelines for oxygen vacancies to coordinate interfacial charge transfer pathways.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is regarded as one of the key issues in achieving efficient photocatalytic water splitting. Monoclinic scheelite BiVO4 is a visible-light-responsive semiconductor which has proved to be effective for oxygen evolution. Recently, the synthesis of a series of monoclinic BiVO4 single crystals was reported, and it was found that the (010), (110), and (011) facets are highly exposed and that the photocatalytic O2 evolution activity depends on the degree of exposure of the (010) facets. To explore the properties of and photocatalytic water oxidation reaction on different facets, DFT calculations were performed to investigate the geometric structure, optical properties, electronic structure, water adsorption, and the whole OER free-energy profiles on BiVO4 (010) and (011) facets. The calculated results suggest both favorable and unfavorable factors for OER on the (010) and the (011) facets. Due to the combined effects of the above-mentioned factors, different facets exhibit quite different photocatalytic activities.

Abstract:Snowflake-like BiVO4 and TiO2 microspheres were fabricated using a hydrothermal method, and BiVO4/TiO2 composites with Z-scheme heterojunction were synthesized via physical mixing. The photocatalytic activity of as-prepared photocatalysts was evaluated by degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated solar illumination. The highest photodegradation efficiency of 96.7 % was achieved for the BiVO4/TiO2 composites with a BiVO4 loading of 30 wt%. The remarkable photocatalytic performance of the BiVO4/TiO2 composite photocatalysts was primarily attributed to the formation of Z-scheme heterojunction between BiVO4 and TiO2, which expanded light response range and accelerated separation of photogenerated carriers. This work provides an effective approach for fabricating Z-scheme photocatalysts and demonstrates the potential of BiVO4/TiO2 composites for the degradation of pollutants in wastewater.

Abstract:A series of visible-light sensitive Co-BiVO4 photocatalysts were synthesized by heteronuclear complexing method using diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) as the chelating agent. The photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), UV–vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and Raman spectroscopy. Results indicated that all Co-BiVO4 photocatalysts had a crystal structure of monoclinic scheelite. Loading BiVO4 with cobalt did not alter the crystal structure of the composites. Cobalt was present as oxides and was deposited on the surface of larger BiVO4 particles. The oxidation state of cobalt varied with its content in Co-BiVO4. The photocatalytic activity of Co-BiVO4 was studied by the decolorization of methylene blue (MB). BiVO4 containing 5% (molar wt) of cobalt exhibited the greatest photocatalytic activity with a 85% of MB removal versus 65% by pure BiVO4 in 5 h. Factors such as pH, initial MB concentration, electrolytes, and irradiation conditions that may affect the photodegradation of methylene blue were studied. High pH and low initial MB concentration resulted in fast photocatalytic reaction. Electrolytes, especially those capable of scavenging hydroxyls, can inhibit MB degradation. The stability of the photocatalysts was confirmed using reclaimed Co-BiVO4 in three successive runs. Abstract:A new type of visible-light-driven BiVO_4 photocatalyst was prepared from Bi(NO_3)_3 · 5H_2O and NH_4VO_3 by hydrothermal method. The as-prepared BiVO_4 was characterized by UV-vis DRS, XRD and BET. Effects of pH, hydrothermal temperature and reaction time on degradation of 4BS catalyzed by BiVO4 under visible light irradiation were investigated. The optimum condition was obtained as follows; pH 7.00, hydrothermal preparation at 160 ℃ for 2 h. Degradation rate of 98.9% was attained over the as-prepared catalyst after visible light irradiation for 210 min.
