Abstract:A new class of substituted tetraphosphane ligands has been developed and applied in the rhodium-catalyzed regioselective hydroformylation of terminal olefins. The high regioselectivity (linear selectivity is above 97 % for 1-octene and 1-hexene) at high temperature (140 degrees C) shown by these tetraphosphane ligands is remarkable considering the low regioselectivity commonly observed under similar reaction conditions when other bisphosphane analogues are used. The steric and electronic effects of substituents on the diarylphosphane moiety have also been examined.

Abstract:A Rh(III)-catalyzed selective C-H amination of 2-phenylpyridine derivatives is reported. With pyridine as a directing group, the reaction has high mono- or diamination selectivity, and a wide range of effective substrates, including electron-deficient and -rich aryl azides. Water helps to promote C-H activation, and the concept of a water promoted rollover mechanism is postulated for the diamination step. The reactions were conducted using a Schlenk flask and proceeded smoothly "on water" under atmospheric conditions with nitrogen gas as the only byproduct.

Abstract:Abstract Organophosphines are an important class of ligands widely used in organic chemistry. Although great progress has recently been made in the rapid construction of new phosphines through Rh- or Ru-catalyzed C–H bond functionalizations, synthetic access to more diverse phosphines remains a challenge. We describe an efficient process for the rhodium-catalyzed phosphorus(III)-directed hydroarylation of internal alkynes to generate various alkenylated and 2′,6′-dialkenylated biarylphosphines with high selectivity. A range of diverse alkynes and phosphines were effectively prepared with broad functional-group compatibility under the optimized conditions. In addition, the developed protocol can be extended to modify chiral phosphine ligands, providing enantioenriched alkenylated phosphines without erosion of the enantiomeric excess.

Abstract:A highly enantioselective rhodium-catalyzed intermolecular hydroarylation of α-aminoalkyl acrylates using water as a direct proton source has been realized by employing a chiral bicyclo[3.3.0] diene ligand, allowing efficient access to a broad range of α-aryl-methyl-substituted β2-, γ2-, and δ2-amino esters with excellent enantioselectivities (up to 98% ee) under exceptionally mild conditions. By utilizing this method, a series of structurally interesting benzo-fused heterocyclic molecules and the corresponding β2-, γ2-, and δ2-amino acids are facilely constructed.

Abstract:Rh-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov hydrosilylation of terminal alkenes and tertiary silanes using readily-available PPh3 as the ligand was reported. This method facilitated the effective synthesis of alkylsilanes with a wide substrate scope and high yields. Remarkably, both an unprecedented catalytic efficiency (TON up to 10,000) and excellent selectivity for the reaction of styrene and diethoxymethylsilane were achieved.

Abstract:Abstract A Rh-catalyzed electrochemical vinylic C–H annulation of acrylamides with alkynes has been developed in an undivided cell, affording cyclic products in good to excellent yield. Divergent syntheses of α-pyridones and cyclic imidates are accomplished by employing N-phenyl acrylamides and N-tosyl acrylamides as substrates, respectively. Additionally, excellent regioselectivities are achieved when using unsymmetrical alkynes. This electrochemical process is environmentally benign compared to traditional transition metal-catalyzed C–H annulations because it avoids the use of stoichiometric metal oxidants. DFT calculations elucidated the reaction mechanism and origins of substituent-controlled chemoselectivity. The sequential C–H activation and alkyne insertion under rhodium catalysis leads to the seven-membered ring vinyl-rhodium intermediate. This intermediate undergoes either the classic neutral concerted reductive elimination to produce α-pyridones, or the ionic stepwise pathway to produce cyclic imidates.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:The palladium-catalyzed intramolecular hydroaminocarbonylation of 2-(1-methylvinyl)aniline derivatives has been achieved using dppp (1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane) as a ligand under hydrogen-free conditions. The reaction involves the generation of an active palladium hydride species with a catalytic amount of TsOH. This amide bond formation reaction was applied to the synthesis of various 4-substituted 3,4-dihydroquinolone derivatives with both high yield and regioselectivity.

Abstract:Hydroformylation of styrene and p-methylstyrene has been investigated using Rh(acac)(CO)(2) as catalyst precursor in the presence of various phosphines and phosphite. It has been demonstrated that the combination of P(OPh)(3) and Rh(acaac)(CO)(2) showed very high catalytic activity but poor regioselectivity; diphosphines are a good cocatalyst, leading to 2-(p-methylphenyl)propanal in > 90% regioselectivity The catalytic activity strongly depends on the P/Rh ratio in the cases of P(OPh)(3) and diphosphines, but the regioselectivity is not markedly affected by the P/Rh ratio.

Abstract:This work detailed the preparation of a class of water-soluble PNP ligands that differed by the nature of the substitute on phenyl ring of ligands. These ligands were incorporated into water-soluble rhodium-PNP complex catalysts that were used to regioselective hydroformylation of a series of terminal arylalkenes, providing efficient access to rac-α-aryl propionaldehydes in good to excellent yield (up to 97%) and branched-regioselectivity (up to 40:1 b/l ratio). Furthermore, gram-scale and diverse synthetic transformation demonstrated synthetic application of this methodology for non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs.

Abstract:An efficient Pd-catalyzed asymmetric hydroesterification of vinyl arenes on water is reported. A variety of phenyl 2-arylpropanoates can be obtained in good yields with high b/l ratios and ee's with phenyl formate or CO as carbonyl source. (R)-DTBM-SEGPHOS was found to be an effective ligand for the reaction under aqueous conditions. The hydrophobicity of the ligand appeared to be crucial to the hydroesterification reaction, which likely proceeded "on water".

Abstract:Biarylphosphines have been widely applied as ligands in various synthetic methods, especially in transition-metal-catalysed carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond cross-coupling reactions. Based on the outstanding properties of the parent scaffolds, a general method for in situ modification of the commercial tertiary phosphine ligands to access a series of ligands is in high demand. Here we show that a rhodium-catalysed system is introduced for the hydroarylation of alkenes and alkynes with tertiary phosphines through P(III)-chelation assisted C-H activation. A series of ligand libraries containing alkyl and alkenyl substituted groups with different steric and electronic properties are obtained in high yields. Furthermore, several experimental studies are performed to uncover the key mechanistic features of the linear-selective hydroarylation of alkenes and branch-selective hydroarylation of alkynes.

Abstract:Synthesis of a chelating phosphite-phosphine ligand from a tris(quinoxaline) extended resorcin[4]arene and its application in the rhodium-catalyzed hydroformylation of terminal alkyl alkenes are reported. Rhodium complexes are formed within the cavity of the macrocycle and branched-selective hydroformylation of 1-octene with a b/l ratio of 5.9 has been achieved at 60 °C under 1:1 H2/CO (20 bar).

Abstract:A rhodium-catalyzed protocol has been established for the enantioselective hydroamination of gem-difluoroallenes with anilines. This strategy shows complete atom-efficiency to access a variety of enantioenriched gem-difluoroallylic amines in excellent branched selectivity (>99:1 for each case), which are important backbones in many biologically active compounds. Mechanistic studies suggest the generation of a gem-difluoro π-allyl rhodium intermediate by an exclusive hydrometalation pathway, which undergoes nucleophilic substitution of amines.

Abstract:A series of novel hybrid phosphorus ligands were designed and applied to the Rh-catalyzed enantioselective anti-Markovnikov hydroformylation of unfunctionalized 1,1-disubstituted alkenes. By employing the new catalyst, linear aldehydes with β-chirality can be prepared with high yields and enantioselectivities under mild conditions. Furthermore, catalyst loading as low as 0.05 mol % furnished the desired product in good yield and undiminished selectivity, demonstrating the efficiency of this transformation in large-scale synthesis.
