Abstract:Photovoltaic panels can receive light to produce electricity and generate heat simultaneously. However, the photovoltaic conversion efficiency decreases as the photovoltaic panel heats up. Therefore, solving the problem of high photovoltaic panel temperature and system waste heat utilization is crucial to ensure efficient utilization of the photovoltaic system. In this study, a spectral beam splitting device, a phase change material, a thermoelectric generator, and a photovoltaic system are combined to form a filtered photovoltaic thermal utilization system. Four configurations are used for experimental studies, namely, a conventional photovoltaic system, a photovoltaic phase change system, a photovoltaic phase change thermoelectric energy storage system, and a filtered photovoltaic thermal utilization system, and an economic and environmental assessment of the filtered photovoltaic thermal utilization system are conducted. Meanwhile, the performance of the filtered photovoltaic thermal utilization system is experimentally investigated at three phase change material melting temperatures and four titanium dioxide/water nanofluid flow rates to find the system configuration with the best overall performance. The data show that the peak temperature of the filtered photovoltaic thermal utilization system is reduced by 29.2 °C, 33.2 °C, and 27 °C, and the total electrical energy efficiency is improved by 2.97 %, 3.23 %, and 2.01 % compared to the conventional photovoltaic system, the photovoltaic phase change system, and the photovoltaic phase change thermoelectric energy storage system, respectively. Compared to the photovoltaic phase change thermoelectric energy storage system, the thermal efficiency is improved by 37.84 %. In addition, the 20 L/h flow rate and 35 °C melting temperature phase change material configuration reflect the best overall system performance. The best configuration provides better results for temperature control and waste heat utilization in the filtered photovoltaic thermal utilization system. Finally, with an energy payback period of 8.8 years and a reduction of 1532.5 kg of CO 2 emissions, the system has a favorable economic and environmental performance.
