Abstract:The membrane fouling of nanofibrous membranes for separating water-in-oil mixtures and emulsions has attracted considerable attention. Herein, the hydrophobic zeolitic imidazolate framework-71 (ZIF-71) was introduced to modify poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) nanofibrous membranes via the in situ growth method. After ZIF-71 loading, all the composite membranes showed superlipophilicity and under-oil superhydrophobicity, which were capable of effectively separating a variety of water-in-oil emulsions only under gravity. The M-20 membranes having under-oil superhydrophobicity and high porosity showed the superior separation performance. The water rejection efficiency for surfactant-free water-in-chloroform emulsion was 99.33%, and the oil flux was 3388.55 L m(-2) h(-1), which was twice that of PVDF-HFP membranes. Besides, the membranes exhibited excellent antifouling and long-term cycle stability. Therefore, such novel metal-organic framework/nanofibrous membranes may offer an opportunity in efficient oil/water separation.
