Abstract:Two pairs of chiral end-on azido-bridged dinuclear hexaazamacrocycles, [Dy2 (LN6 R/S )2 (N3 )2 Cl2 ](BPh4 )2 (1R/1S) and [Dy2 (LN6 R/S )2 (N3 )4 ]Cl2 (2R/2S) (LN6 R/S is hexaazamacrocyclic neutral Schiff base ligand derived from 2,6-diformylpyridine and (1R, 2R)/(1S, 2S)-diaminocyclohexane), were constructed by adjusting the molar ratio of sodium azide to Dy(III) macrocycle precursor. Structural analyses reveal that all Dy(III) centers in complexes 1R/1S and 2R/2S are nine-coordinate with hula-loop coordination geometry, and the differences between 1R/1S and 2R/2S are the terminal coordination anion and counter anion. Magnetic studies indicate that complex 2S displays typical SMM behaviors under a zero dc field, whereas 1S just shows slow relaxation of magnetization resulting from a relatively weak axial crystal field. Significantly, complex 2R/2S represents the first homochiral all-nitrogen-coordinated lanthanide single-molecule magnet.

Abstract:Magnetoelectric (ME) multiferroic materials have unique advantages in low-power and high-density information storage, because they can simultaneously display ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism. However, research on how to construct air-stable high-performance ME single-molecule magnets (SMMs) is nonexistent. Herein, by introducing homochirality while reducing molecular symmetry, two double-decker Dy(III) enantiomers adopting the polar space group P2(1) and exhibiting excellent thermal stability were obtained. They displayed zero field SMM behavior with an anisotropy barrier (U-eff) of ca. 100 cm(-1). This work establishes a rational chemical design strategy for crystallizing SMMs in polar space groups and elucidates the direction for future research, that is, engineering small-size high-performance SMMs. [GRAPHICS] .

Abstract:Design and synthesis of air-stable and easily tailored high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs) are of great significance toward the implementation of SMMs in molecular-based magneto-electronic devices. Here, by introducing electron-withdrawing fluorinated substituents on equatorial ligand, two chiral Dy(III) macrocyclic complexes, RRRR-Dy-D6hF12 (1) and SSSS-Dy-D6hF12 (2), with a record anisotropy barrier exceeding 1800 K and the longest relaxation time approaching 2500 s at 2.0 K for all known air-stable SMMs, were obtained. The nearly perfect axiality of the ground Kramers doublet (KD) enables the open hysteresis loops up to 20 K in the magnetically diluted sample. It is notable that they are structurally rigid with high thermal stability and the apical ligand can be tailored to carry proper surface-binding groups. From Geometric to Charge-Distribution Symmetry: Deeper Insights into Lifting the Performance of Dysprosium Single-Ion Magnets

Abstract:Crystal-field symmetry of lanthanide ions plays a critical role in suppressing quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) in single-molecule magnets (SMMs), but high-performance SMM design and modulation remain challenging only in view of the geometric symmetry of the first coordination sphere. Herein, two bis(semicarbazone)/bis(thiosemicarbazone)dysprosium single-ion magnets with pentagonal bipyramid geometry were reported, and bis(thiosemicarbazone)lanthanide complexes have never been reported to the best of our knowledge. They served as good archetypes to study the magneto-structural relationships based on the charge distribution The complex with more ideal geometric symmetry displays fast zero-field QTM with negligible "effective barrier", owing to the defective charge distribution. By modulating the transverse crystal field via the replacement of the O sites with the less charged and larger radius S atoms, it results in lower geometric but higher charge-distribution symmetry, giving rise to the significant suppression of QTM and the enhancement of reversal barrier up to ca. 1,000 K. These results demonstrate that the charge-distribution symmetry can be chemically tailored by modification of the crystal field, which is essential for designing high-performance SMMs.

Abstract:Here we use a pseudoallyl ligand, N,N′-chelating amidinate (Am), together with pentamethylcyclopentadienyl (Cp*) to give two dysprosium(III) single-molecule magnets (SMMs): [{(AmiPr)DyCp*(μ-Cl)}2] and [AmdippDyCp*(Cl)(μ-Cl)Li(THF)3] with distinct energy barriers (U eff) of 97 and 472 K, respectively. Abstract:In the pursuit of high-performance single-molecule magnets (SMMs), incorporating intramolecular magnetic coupling emerges as a pivotal strategy. Among these, d-f SMMs have garnered significant attention due to their remarkable versatility, which lies in their ability to tune coordination environments and facilely substitute metal centers. However, achieving performance-centric d-f SMMs through the synergistic interplay between highly anisotropic f ions and d-f magnetic interactions remains a formidable challenge. While mononuclear hexagonal bipyramidal (D6h) DyIII SMMs have been successfully isolated, the exploration of d-f SMMs featuring D6h-lanthanide metal centers remains uncharted territory. In this study, we employed planar bipodal ligands in conjunction with “staple-like” axial phenoxide ligands to synthesize the first hexagonal bipyramidal d-f SMM. Remarkably, this compound exhibits alternating-current magnetic susceptibilities peaking up to 68 K with an energy barrier surpassing 1,200 K, thus establishing a new benchmark within the heterometallic d-f SMM landscape inclusive of complexes with diamagnetic d metals and paramagnetic f ions. Notably, the ferromagnetic interaction at the d-f sites engenders oscillating relaxation times contingent on the magnetic field — a characteristic distinct from mononuclear SMMs. These findings shed light on a deliberate design approach for d-f SMMs, emphasizing the cooperative utilization of high-barrier lanthanide modules alongside d ions through magnetic interactions. This synergy significantly enhances and diversifies the magnetic dynamics of these intriguing molecular systems.

Abstract:A heptanuclear and a dimer of heptanuclear dysprosium clusters (Dy7 and Dy14) have been successfully synthesized by ingenious coalescence of the single and double pyrazinyl hydrazone as well as phosphonate ligands. The complexes feature the largest odd-numbered cyclic lanthanide clusters reported thus far. Both exhibit single molecule magnet behaviors at low temperature.

Abstract:By the bridging action of the 6-chloro-2-hydroxypyridine (Hchp) ligand and the terminal coordination role of the homochiral ligand, (-)/(+)-3-trifluoroacetyl camphor (l-Htfc/d-Htfc), a pair of enantiomerically pure dysprosium(III) dinuclear complexes, [Dy2(l-tfc)4(chp)2(MeOH)2] (l-1) and [Dy2(d-tfc)4(chp)2(MeOH)2] (d-1), was obtained. Their circular dichroism (CD) spectra verified their enantiomeric nature. Magnetic investigation indicated that they exhibit ferromagnetic interaction and good zero field single-molecule magnet (SMM) properties. The Ueff/k values of l-1 and d-1 at 0 Oe are 180.5 and 181.3 K, respectively, which are large values for homochiral Dy(III) SMMs. A reasonable explanation for the magnetic properties of l-1 and d-1 was supplied by ab initio calculations. Remarkably, magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) investigation revealed that the chiral Dy2 enantiomers show a strong magneto-optical Faraday effect at room temperature, suggesting potential applications in magneto-optical devices.
A single-ion magnet building block strategy toward Dy2 single-molecule magnets with enhanced magnetic performance

Abstract:A molecular dysprosium(III) complex [Dy(DClQ)3(H2O)2] (1) was used as building unit for the construction of lanthanide SMMs, which has led to the isolation of two dinuclear Dy(III) complexes, namely [Dy2(DClQ)6(MeOH)2] (2) and [Dy2(DClQ)6(bpmo)2]·6MeCN (3) (DClQ = 5,7-dichloro-8-hydroxyquinoline, bpmo = 4,4 ́-dipyridine-oxide). Structural analyses revealed the same N3O5 coordination environment of the Dy(III) centers with a distorted biaugmented trigonal prism (C2V symmetry) and triangular dodecahedron (D2d symmetry) for 2 and 3, respectively. Magnetic studies revealed the presence of ferromagnetic and weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the Dy3+ centers in 2 and 3, respectively. Interestingly, slow relaxation of magnetization at zero fields was evidenced with the Ueff of 51.4 K and 159.0 K for complexes 2 and 3, respectively. The detailed analysis of relaxation dynamics discloses that the Orbach process is dominant for 2 whereas Raman and QTM play an important role in 3. Theoretical calculations were carried out to provide insight into the magnetic exchange interactions and relaxation dynamics for the complexes. Due to a single-ion magnet (SIM) of 1, the foregoing results demonstrate a SIM modular synthetic route for the preparation of dinuclear lanthanide SMMs.

Abstract:Single-molecule magnets (SMMs), are regarded as excellent nanomaterials for high-density information storage and quantum computing. The local symmetry of the crystal field for the metal ion plays an important role in pursuing a high-performance SMM. Herein, two highly stable distorted hexagonal bipyramidal (quasi- D6 h) Dy complexes exhibiting slow relaxation of the magnetization are reported. A hexagonal bipyramidal Dy model complex with 18-crown-6 was also designed to study the relationship between magnetic anisotropy and symmetry. The combined experimental and theoretical results indicate that quantum tunneling is highly dependent on the local symmetries of the crystal field. The magnetic anisotropy becomes much stronger when the symmetry is closer to a standard D6 h geometry. These results support the conclusion that the hexagonal bipyramidal geometry is a viable one for the design of new classes of SMMs.

Abstract:An ingenious self‐assembly method has been employed to achieve noncentered cyclic metal cages by integrating single and double pyrazinyl hydrazone ligands in the presence of an organo phosphonic acid. An even‐numbered hexanuclear and an odd‐numbered heptanuclear dysprosium(III) cluster, namely [Dy6(spch)6(O3PC10H7)2(pyra)2(MeOH)(H2O)]·8.5H2O [1, H2spch = (E)‐N′‐(2‐hydroxybenzylidene)pyrazine‐2‐carbohydrazide, pyra = pyrazine‐2‐carboxylate] and [Dy7(eddc)2(spch)2(O3PC10H7)4(OAc)5(MeOH)4]·4MeOH [2, H2eddc = (E,E)‐N′,N′′‐(ethane‐1,2‐diylidene)bis(pyrazine‐2‐carbohydrazide)] have been synthesized successfully. Single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction analysis revealed that compound 1 is composed of six identical [Dy2(spch)]4+ building blocks containing a single pyrazinyl hydrazone ligand of spch2– welded to each other to form a hexanuclear ring, whereas compound 2 possesses an enlarged skeleton with a heptanuclear ring made up of two [Dy3(eddc)]7+ and two [Dy2(spch)]4+ building blocks by virtue of the inclusion in the synthesis of double pyrazinyl hydrazone ligand eddc2–. Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit drastically distinct dynamic magnetic properties. Compound 1 shows a complex slow relaxation of the magnetization with two types of temperature dependence with energy barriers (Ueff) of 4.7 and 20.3 K and pre‐exponential factors (τ0) of 9.1 × 10–5 and 2.6 × 10–6 s for the low‐ and high‐temperature regimes, respectively, whereas compound 2 exhibits a two‐step relaxation process (Ueff(1): 45.1 K, τ0(1): 4.4 × 10–7 s; Ueff(2): 48.7, τ0(2): 2.7 × 10–8 s) in the out‐of‐phase alternating current signals.
Structures and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior of Dy3 and Dy4 Clusters Constructed by Different Dysprosium(III) Salts

Abstract:Using the Schiff base ligand H2L-pyra (N'-(2-hydroxybenzoyl)pyrazine-2-carbohydrazonamide) with multiple dentate sites, the trinuclear DyIII-based complex [Dy3(HL-pyra)2(L-pyra)2(CH3COO)3]·2H2O (1) was synthesized. By analyzing the fragmented assembly process and fine-tuning the bridging anions, complex [Dy4(HL-pyra)2(L-pyra)4(NO3)2(H2O)2]·8H2O (2) with different nuclear numbers was successfully synthesized. Magnetic studies demonstrated that 1 did not exhibit magnetic relaxation behavior under the external field; however, 2 exhibited zero-field single-molecule magnetic relaxation behavior with an effective energy barrier (Ueff) of 197.44 K. This is attributed to the improved anisotropy of the single ion after the normalization of the crystal structure, thus realizing the molecular magnetic switching. Moreover, magnetic dilution analysis of 2 demonstrated that the weak magnetic interaction between metal ions inhibited the occurrence of quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM), resulting in high-performance single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior. The reasons for the magnetic difference between these two complexes were analyzed using ab initio calculation and magneto-structural correlations. This study provides a reasonable prediction of the ideal configuration of the approximately parallelogram DyIII-based SMMs, thus offering an effective approach for synthesizing Dy4 complexes with excellent properties.
Modulation of the Slow Relaxation of the Magnetization Dynamics through Second Coordination Sphere in Macrocyclic Dysprosium(III) Complexes

Abstract:Single-molecule magnets (SMMs) exhibit unique magnetic properties related to the molecular nature of these “isolated” coordination complexes. In this study, we investigate the influence of counterions on two macrocyclic dysprosium-based SMMs, namely, [DyLN6(OAc)2][OAc] (1) and [DyLN6(OAc)2][B(C6H5)4] (2) (LN6 = 2,7,13,18-tetramethyl-3,6,14,17,23,24-hexaazatricyclo[17.3.1.18,12]tetracosa 1(23),2,6,8,10,12(24),13,17,19,21-decaene, OAc = acetate), differing by the nature of the counterion. We demonstrate that the nature of the counterion indirectly modulates the degree of coordination geometry distortion, particularly in macrocycle folding, through subtle intermolecular interactions. This subsequently affects the slow relaxation dynamics, as supported by both magnetic and theoretical calculations. A noticeable decrease in the transverse magnetic anisotropy is observed for 2, attributed to a reduced degree of macrocycle distortion in the equatorial plane. Theoretical calculations further suggest a greater crystal-field splitting in 2 with the first excited state estimated to be twice as large in energy compared to 1. Both complexes exhibit magnetization relaxation dynamics primarily driven by a Raman process.

Abstract:A series of isomeric sandwich-type dysprosiacarboranyl complexes, including [Na(THF) 5 ][3,2'-(THF) 2 -3,2'-Dy(1,2-C 2 B 9 H 11 ) x (1',7'-C 2 B 9 H 11 ) 2– x ] ( o / m -Dy ) and [Na(THF) 5 ][2,2'-(THF) 2 -2,2'-Dy(1,7-C 2 B 9 H 11 ) 2 ] ( m -Dy ) were synthesized by using the isomeric dicarbollide ligands, namely [ nido -7,8-C 2 B 9 H 11 ] 2– and [ nido -7,9-C 2 B 9 H 11 ] 2− . The structural details of o / m -Dy and m -Dy and magnetic dynamics of m -Dy were investigated to compare with the previous study on [Na(THF) 5 ][2,2'-(THF) 2 -2,2'-Dy(1,2-C 2 B 9 H 11 ) 2 ] o -Dy . The bending angles of sandwiched dysprosiacarboranes are straightened so as to improve energy barriers ( U eff ) from 430(5) to 591(0) K. Magneto-structural correlations show that the introduction of meta-C sites within the π -electron delocalized heterocyclic ring can effectively shorten the Dy–C 2 B 3 centroid distance and increase the C 2 B 3centroid ∙∙∙Dy∙∙∙C 2 B 3centroid bending angle, which is attributed to the differences in electronegativity between C and B atoms on the ring of C 2 B 3 2– . Abstract:Symmetryandaxialityarethought tobeguides toward the pursuit of high energy barrier and blocking temperature for thedysprosium(III) (Dy-III) single-molecule magnets (SMMs). The Dy-III complexeswith low coordination numbers are intended to satisfy axial symmetry. Here, we report four four-coordinate Dy-III SMMs based on bis(arylamido) dysprosium building block {Dy (N-RR')(2)(mu-Cl)(2)K}(N-RR'={N(SiMe3)(C6H3'Pr-2-2,6)}(-)), with two strong Dy-N and twoweak Dy-Cl bonds. Through fine-tuning of axial anisotropy, the SMM with the largest N-Dy-N angle of 139.24(15)degrees displayed magnetic hysteresis with a coercive field (H-c) of 18.6 kOe at 2 K, which kept opening up to 35 K. Alternating current susceptibility measurement showed that the relaxation energy barrier reached as high as 1578 K, which is among the highest reported Dy-III SMMs. Ab initio calculations revealed strong anisotropy and crystal-field axiality of the compound, despite the low symmetry, and provided a synthetically workable approach to construct high-performance SMMs useful in applications such as digital processing, transport electronics, quantumcomputing, and ultra-high-density data storage.
Bis‐Alkoxide Dysprosium(III) Crown Ether Complexes Exhibit Tunable Air Stability and Record Energy Barrier

Abstract:Two bis‐alkoxide Dy(III)‐18‐Crown‐6 single‐molecule magnets with local hexagonal‐bipyramidal coordination geometry have been isolated by using the triiodide precursor and show progressive enhancement of magnetic axiality and air stability. The adamantanol analog exhibits a record Ueff of 2427(19) K and the TB100s of 11 K, setting a new benchmark for solid‐state air‐stable SMMs. High‐performance and air‐stable single‐molecule magnets (SMMs) can offer great convenience for the fabrication of information storage devices. However, the controversial requisition of high stability and magnetic axiality is hard to balance for lanthanide‐based SMMs. Here, a family of dysprosium(III) crown ether complexes possessing hexagonal‐bipyramidal (pseudo‐D6h symmetry) local coordination geometry with tunable air stability and effective energy barrier for magnetization reversal (Ueff) are shown. The three complexes share the common formula of [Dy(18‐C‐6)L2][I3] (18‐C‐6 = 1,4,7,10,13,16‐hexaoxacyclooctadecane; L = I, 1; L = OtBu 2 and L = 1‐AdO 3). 1 is highly unstable in the air. 2 can survive in the air for a few minutes, while 3 remains unchanged in the air for more than 1 week. This is roughly in accordance with the percentage of buried volumes of the axial ligands. More strikingly, 2 and 3 show progressive enhancement of Ueff and 3 exhibits a record high Ueff of 2427(19) K, which significantly contributes to the 100 s blocking temperature up to 11 K for Yttrium‐diluted sample, setting a new benchmark for solid‐state air‐stable SMMs.
