Abstract:High-intensity and widely tunable sources in the terahertz (THz) frequency range are highly desirable for both fundamental and applied researches. Free electron lasers (FELs) coupling between a relativistic electron beam and a copropagating electromagnetic wave in an undulator can generate intense THz light. However, most THz FEL facilities are still working with a relatively long and low-peak-current electron beam, limiting the emission efficiency and the THz pulse energy. Here, we demonstrate a superradiant THz FEL by pre-modulating the electron beam into microbunches which emit in phase and interact strongly with the generated THz waves in a one-meter-long undulator. The measurements show that the narrow-band radiation frequency can be tuned throughout the 1 THz to 15 THz range at the fundamental harmonic of electron microbunches and up to 20 THz at the second harmonic. The detected pulse energy reaches 150 microjoules at 10 THz without consideration of the transportation loss. Such kind of THz source is stable in terms of shot-to-shot pulse intensity and frequency, and is expected to enable many novel researches.

Abstract:Free-electron lasers (FELs) are fourth-generation light sources that deliver extremely high intensity, ultrashort light pulses over a broad wavelength range from far-infrared to hard x ray. FELs based on the self-amplified spontaneous emission principle have been successfully operated with ultrahigh brightness and a broad wavelengths tuning range with good transverse coherence but poor temporal coherence. In contrast, the laser-seeded FELs have provided full coherence but at selected central wavelengths, usually the harmonics of the laser seeds, with relatively narrower tuning range. We report the experimental demonstration of a high-gain harmonic-generation (HGHG) FEL that is continuously tunable over a wide range using the combination of optical parametrical amplification, variable-gap undulator, and harmonic selection, where the temporal coherence is preserved as confirmed with the Michelson interferometry. In order to achieve higher photon energies, the first try of cascaded HGHG with a fresh-bunch technique is also made at the Shanghai Deep Ultraviolet Free-electron Laser test facility.

Abstract:Free-electron lasers have been successfully operated with ultrahigh brightness and excellent transverse coherence at X-ray wavelengths 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 . One of the next goals for further improvements is full coherence 5 , 6 . An obvious approach is to seed the free-electron laser interaction using a conventional source that has good temporal coherence 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 . Here, we show the first lasing of a free-electron laser with an echo-enabled harmonic generation scheme 11 , which shows great promise for producing coherent lasing at short wavelengths, even in the X-ray regime. The experiment was conducted at a test facility 13 , 14 that combines a 135.4 MeV electron accelerator with an amplifier consisting of a series of undulator magnets. Lasing was achieved at the third harmonic of the seed with a gain of ∼100,000 over spontaneous radiation. The measurements show typical exponential growth and excellent spectral characteristics, as well as good intensity stability.

Abstract:We study high efficiency, multi-terawatt peak power, few angstrom wavelength, X-ray Free Electron Lasers (X-ray FELs). To obtain these characteristics we consider an optimized undulator design: superconducting, helical, with short period and built-in strong focusing. This design reduces the length of the breaks between modules, decreasing diffraction effects, and allows using a stronger transverse electron focusing. Both effects reduce the gain length and the overall undulator length. The peak power and efficiency depend on the transverse electron beam distribution and on time dependent effects, like synchrotron sideband growth. The last effect is identified as the main cause for reduction of electron beam microbunching and FEL peak power. We show that the optimal functional form for the undulator magnetic field tapering profile, yielding the maximum output power, depends significantly on these effects. The output power achieved when neglecting time dependent effects for an LCLS-like X-ray FEL with a 100 m long tapered undulator is 7.3 TW, a 14 $\%$ electron beam energy extraction efficiency. When these effects are included the highest peak power is achieved reducing the tapering rate, thus minimizing the reduction in electron micro-bunching due to synchrotron sideband growth. The maximum efficiency obtained for this case is 9 $\%$, corresponding to 4.7 TW peak radiation power. Possible methods to suppress the synchrotron sidebands, and further enhance the FEL peak power, up to about 6 TW by increasing the seed power, are discussed.

Abstract:We proposed and investigated a novel terahertz free-electron laser, which is based on two gratings driven by two electron-beams. Two gratings are symmetrically arranged to form an open-cavity. Two electron-beams generate special Smith-Purcell radiations, respectively, from two gratings. When radiation interferes constructively, operation modes of the open-cavity are excited and then amplified by beam-wave interactions. By means of particle-in-cell simulations, we have shown that, with compact equipments and available electron-beams, this scheme can generate radiation with power and efficiency being higher than those of majority radiation sources in the vicinity region of 1 THz. It can promisingly be developed as a high-power, high-efficiency, and compact terahertz source for practice.

Abstract:Terahertz (THz) radiation has attracted much attention in new scientific and industrial applications. There has been significant recent progress in generating THz with accelerators. To investigate the collective behavior of electron dynamics, we have proposed a new high throughput material characterization system, which supplies a multiple light source. The system includes a pre-bunched THz free electron laser (FEL), which is a high-power narrow-band THz source with a wide tuning range of frequency. The physical design with the main components of the facility is introduced, and the simulation results are illustrated. Radiation of 0.5-3.0 THz is obtained by the fundamental wave of the pre-bunched beam, and radiation covering 3.0-5.0 THz is realized by second harmonic generation. As the simulation shows, intense THz radiation could be achieved in a frequency from 0.5-5.0 THz, with a peak power of several megawatts (MWs) and a bandwidth of a few percent.

Abstract:Free-electron lasers generate high-brilliance coherent radiation at wavelengths spanning from the infrared to the X-ray domains. The recent development of short-wavelength seeded free-electron lasers now allows for unprecedented levels of control on longitudinal coherence, opening new scientific avenues such as ultra-fast dynamics on complex systems and X-ray nonlinear optics. Although those devices rely on state-of-the-art large-scale accelerators, advancements on laser-plasma accelerators, which harness gigavolt-per-centimetre accelerating fields, showcase a promising technology as compact drivers for free-electron lasers. Using such footprint-reduced accelerators, exponential amplification of a shot-noise type of radiation in a self-amplified spontaneous emission configuration was recently achieved. However, employing this compact approach for the delivery of temporally coherent pulses in a controlled manner has remained a major challenge. Here we present the experimental demonstration of a laser-plasma accelerator-driven free-electron laser in a seeded configuration, where control over the radiation wavelength is accomplished. Furthermore, the appearance of interference fringes, resulting from the interaction between the phase-locked emitted radiation and the seed, confirms longitudinal coherence. Building on our scientific achievements, we anticipate a navigable pathway to extreme-ultraviolet wavelengths, paving the way towards smaller-scale free-electron lasers, unique tools for a multitude of applications in industry, laboratories and universities.

Abstract:Accelerator-based x-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) are the latest addition to the revolutionary tools of discovery for the 21st century. The two major components of an XFEL are an accelerator-produced electron beam and a magnetic undulator, which tend to be kilometer-scale long and expensive. A proof-of-principle demonstration of free-electron lasing at 27 nm using beams from compact laser wakefield accelerators was shown recently by using a magnetic undulator. However, scaling these concepts to x-ray wavelengths is far from straightforward as the requirements on the beam quality and jitters become much more stringent. Here, we present an ultracompact scheme to produce tens of attosecond x-ray pulses with several GW peak power utilizing a novel aspect of the FEL instability using a highly chirped, prebunched, and ultrabright tens of MeV electron beam from a plasma-based accelerator interacting with an optical undulator. The FEL resonant relation between the prebunched period and the energy selects resonant electrons automatically from the highly chirped beam which leads to a stable generation of attosecond x-ray pulses. Furthermore, two-color attosecond pulses with subfemtosecond separation can be produced by adjusting the energy distribution of the electron beam so that multiple FEL resonances occur at different locations within the beam. Abstract:A superradiant FEL in the THz (3 THz) region is currently operating at Ariel University. It is based on the novel ORGAD accelerator, which is a hybrid linear RF photo-cathode 6 MeV electron gun. The hybrid term stands for its unique standing wave (SW)—traveling wave (TW) structure. The undulator generates spontaneous superradiance, which corresponds to spontaneous emission when the electron bunch duration is shorter than the radiated frequency, resulting in a much higher photon yield. However, the efficiency of this scheme is still quite low. In order to achieve higher emission (by improved efficiency), we intend to implement a new and promising radiative interaction scheme: tapering-enhanced superradiance (TES). This particular undulator design employs a tapered (amplitude) undulator in the zero-slippage condition to obtain a significantly more powerful and efficient THz radiation source. At the current stage, the scheme is designed for emission at approximately 0.5 THz. The design and start-to-end simulations demonstrate significant enhancement of superradiant energy and extraction efficiency using this method compared to a reference uniform case.

Superpower E-Beam Sources and Performance Estimates for Compact THz FELs

Abstract:High peak and average power free-electron lasers (FELs) in the terahertz region (THz) require small diameter, low-emittance, and high voltage electron beams. This paper presents two 1.5-2 MV, 100-200 A, thermionic cathode electron source approaches for compact megawatt range peak power, multi-kilowatt average power, high repetition rate, THz FELs. The preferred beam generation system includes grading electrodes and is quite compact compared to the other standard diode gun approaches. Both provide highly compressed beams at the waist having low values of normalized rms emittance. In particular, the new injector approach with grading electrodes, operating at a body voltage of 1.5-2 MV and 100 A, has a normalized rms emittance of roughly 10 mm-mrad at the beam waist. Power supply switching considerations are considered in the paper as well as considerations for very high-voltage multi-stage depressed collectors for device efficiency enhancement. Based on these designs, we provide performance estimates for FELs operating in the THz spectral region.

Abstract:The tunability, high power, high repetition rate and picoseconds-pulse time structure of terahertz (THz) radiation make the THz free-electron laser (FEL) a very attractive THz source of coherent radiation. China Academy of Engineering Physics terahertz free electron laser (CTFEL) is the first THz FEL user facility in China, which consists of a GaAs photocathode high-voltage DC gun, a superconducting RF linac, a planar undulator and a quasi-concentric optical resonator. The terahertz laser's frequency is continuous adjustable from 0.7 THz to 4.2 THz. The average power is more than 10 W and the micro-pulse power is more than 0.3 MW. In addition, a super-radiation THz source based on CTFEL has also been built, with a frequency range of 0.1-0.7 THz. In the near future, by upgrading the electron energy, the frequency of facility will be extended to 0.1-125 THz, which will achieve full coverage of the THz band. The current status and future prospects of CTFEL THz radiation source are emphasized in this paper, and some important user experiments are introduced briefly.

Abstract:We propose a new scheme for high gain harmonic generation free electron lasers (HGHG FELs), which is seeded by a pair of intersecting laser beams to interact with an electron beam in a modulator undulator located in a dispersive section. The interference of the laser beams gives rise to a two-dimensional modulation in the energy-time phase space because of a strong correlation between the electron energy and the position in the direction of dispersion. This eventually forms pseudo energy bands in the electron beam, which results in efficient harmonic generation in HGHG FELs in a similar manner to the well-known scheme using the echo effects, with the requirement on the energy modulation being much more relaxed.

Abstract:Ultrashort large‐bandwidth X‐ray free‐electron laser generation is proposed using a dielectric‐lined waveguide. With this modulation scheme through strong terahertz wakefield self‐excited, a cheap and flexible large‐bandwidth operation mode is researched for free‐electron‐laser complexes.Large‐bandwidth pulses produced by cutting‐edge X‐ray free‐electron lasers (FELs) are of great importance in research fields like material science and biology. In this paper, a new method to generate high‐power ultrashort FEL pulses with tunable spectral bandwidth with spectral coherence using a dielectric‐lined waveguide without interfering operation of linacs is proposed. By exploiting the passive and dephasingless wakefield at terahertz frequency excited by the beam, stable energy modulation can be achieved in the electron beam and large‐bandwidth high‐intensity soft X‐ray radiation can be generated. Three‐dimensional start‐to‐end simulations have been carried out and the results show that coherent radiation pulses with duration of a few femtoseconds and bandwidths ranging from 1.01% to 2.16% can be achieved by changing the undulator taper profile.

Super-radiation Terahertz Source Based on Sub-picosecond Electron Beam at CTFEL

Abstract:China Academy of Engineering Physics Terahertz Free Electron Laser (CTFEL) works in the range of 0.7~4.2 THz. To expand the range below 0.1 THz, we developed a super-radiation terahertz (THz) source based on sub-picosecond electron beam behind CTFEL. The sub-picosecond electron beam was generated by velocity compression and then injected into undulator to provide THz wave. In this proceeding, the preliminary experimental results of super-radiation terahertz source were reported.

Abstract:High-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) is effective to produce fully coherent free-electron laser (FEL) pulses for various scientific applications. Due to the limitation of seed lasers, HGHG typically operates at a low repetition rate. In this paper, a harmonic-enhanced HGHG scheme is proposed to relax the peak power requirement for the seed laser, which can therefore operate at megahertz and a higher repetition rate. Moreover, the setup of the scheme is compact and can be adopted in an existing single-stage HGHG facility to extend the shortest achievable wavelength. Simulations show that FEL emission at 13.5 nm (20th harmonic) can be obtained with a 270 nm, 1 MW (peak power) seed laser.

Abstract:We propose a physical design of a compact all optical terahertz (THz)-driven electron source. The 300 mm accelerator beamline, powered by Joule level laser system, is easily to be integrated to tabletop scale. A dual-feed THz-driven electron gun with an exponential impedance, a tapered dielectric loaded cylindrical waveguide, THz-driven bunch compressors and permanent magnet solenoids (PMS) have been designed and optimized. Dynamics simulations show that the electron source can deliver a 19 fC, 3 MeV electron beams with a normalized transverse emittance of 0.079 {\pi}.<a class="link-external link-http" href="http://mm.mrad" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>. A minimum relative energy spread of 0.04% or a minimum root-mean-square bunch length of 6.1 fs can be achieved by adjusting the beam shaping line. Sensitivity analysis shows that the THz-driven electron source can effectively work under a 1.5% energy jitter of the THz power system. Simulated diffraction pattern up to the fourth order of an aluminum sample based on the beamline can be clearly distinguished. A prototype THz gun has beam fabricated and is now under testing, more results will be reported in future works.

Abstract:Despite tremendous progress in x-ray free-electron laser (FEL) science over the last decade, future applications still demand fully coherent, stable x-rays that have not been demonstrated in existing X-ray FEL facilities. In this Letter, we describe an active Q-switched x-ray regenerative amplifier FEL scheme to produce fully coherent, high-brightness, hard x rays at a high-repetition rate. By using simple electron-beam phase space manipulation, we show this scheme is flexible in controlling the x-ray cavity quality factor Q and hence the output radiation. We report both theoretical and numerical studies on this scheme with a wide range of accelerator, x-ray cavity, and undulator parameters.

Abstract:Advanced experiments using THz pump and X-ray probe pulses at modern free-electron lasers (FELs) like the European X-ray FEL require a frequency-tunable, high-power, narrow-band THz source maintaining the repetition rate and pulse structure of the X-ray pulses. This paper reports the first results from a THz source, that is based on a single-pass high-gain THz FEL operating with a central wavelength of 100 micrometers. The THz FEL prototype is currently in operation at the Photo Injector Test facility at DESY in Zeuthen (PITZ) and uses the same type of electron source as the European XFEL photo injector. A self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) FEL was envisioned as the main mechanism for generating the THz pulses. Although the THz FEL at PITZ is supposed to use the same mechanism as at X-ray facilities, it cannot be considered as a simple scaling of the radiation wavelength because there is a large difference in the number of electrons per radiation wavelength, which is five orders of magnitude higher for the THz case. The bunching factor arising from the electron beam current profile contributes strongly to the initial spontaneous emission starting the FEL process. Proof-of-principle experiments were done at PITZ using an LCLS-I undulator to generate the first high-power, high-repetition-rate single-pass THz FEL radiation. Electron bunches with a beam energy of ~17 MeV and a bunch charge of up to several nC are used to generate THz pulses with a pulse energy of several tens of microjoules. For example, for an electron beam with a charge of ~2.4 nC, more than 100 microjoules were generated at a central wavelength of 100 micrometers. The narrowband spectrum was also demonstrated by spectral measurements. These proof-of-principle experiments pave the way for a tunable, high-repetition-rate THz source providing pulses with energies in the millijoule range.

Abstract:In the field of beam physics, two frontier topics have taken center stage due to their potential to enable new approaches to discovery in a wide swath of science. These areas are: advanced, high gradient acceleration techniques, and x-ray free electron lasers (XFELs). Further, there is intense interest in the marriage of these two fields, with the goal of producing a very compact XFEL. In this context, recent advances in high gradient radio-frequency cryogenic copper structure research have opened the door to the use of surface electric fields between 250 and 500 MV/m. Such an approach is foreseen to enable a new generation of photoinjectors with six-dimensional beam brightness beyond the current state-of-the-art by well over an order of magnitude. This advance is an essential ingredient enabling an ultra-compact XFEL (UC-XFEL). In addition, one may accelerate these bright beams to GeV scale in less than 10 meters. Such an injector, when combined with inverse free electron laser-based bunching techniques can produce multi-kA beams with unprecedented beam quality, quantified by ~50 nm-rad normalized emittances. These beams, when injected into innovative, short-period (1-10 mm) undulators uniquely enable UC-XFELs having footprints consistent with university-scale laboratories. We describe the architecture and predicted performance of this novel light source, which promises photon production per pulse of a few percent of existing XFEL sources. We review implementation issues including collective beam effects, compact x-ray optics systems, and other relevant technical challenges. To illustrate the potential of such a light source to fundamentally change the current paradigm of XFELs with their limited access, we examine possible applications in biology, chemistry, materials, atomic physics, industry, and medicine which may profit from this new model of performing XFEL science.
