Abstract:Arachidonic acid (ARA) is emerging as a signaling molecule, which modulates plant stress signaling networks. The present study aims to evaluate whether exogenous ARA treatment can preserve postharvest mulberry fruit. Fresh mulberry fruit were treated with ARA and stored at 4 degrees C for eight days. The fruit decay and quality were evaluated every two days during storage. The results showed that ARA effectively reduced the decay rate and the formation of malondialdehyde (MDA), prevented weight loss, maintained visual quality, the permeability and integrity of cell membrane, and enhanced the activities of antioxidant enzymes and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) of the mulberry fruit. Additionally, ARA treatment effectively preserved the titratable acidity (TA) and total soluble solids (TSS) content. Especially 25 mg LA ARA treatment had a better effect on keeping the quality of mulberry fruit after harvest. Therefore, ARA treatment can be applied for maintaining quality and reducing the decay of postharvest mulberry fruit.
