Abstract:A Fe(III)-promoted highly selective photo-oxidation of benzylic C–H bond delivering relative carbonyl products is reported. By altering the concentration of ferric salt, methylarenes can be selectively oxidized under UV irradiation to furnish aromatic aldehydes or acids, respectively. By this protocol, the oxidation of ethylarenes provides the corresponding acetophenones. The reaction is inferred to involve divergent pathways in different concentrations of catalyst for the alternative selectivity between aldehydes and aicds. The reusable catalyst, high conversion and selectivity make this oxidation a green and economic protocol for the synthesis of aromatic carbonyl compounds.

Abstract:We report a general photocatalytic protocol for the remote C(sp<sup>3</sup>)-H bond amination of free aliphatic alcohols. The electron transfer between the abundant and inexpensive catalyst FeCl<sub>3</sub> and simple alkanols under blue LED irradiation enables the alkoxy radical formation under mild redox-neutral conditions, with no need for additional oxidant and prefunctionalization. The subsequent selective 1,5-hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) and amination provide a simple and efficient way to access molecular complexity from readily available and bulk alcohols.

Abstract:Iodine-mediated intermolecular C-N and C-I bond formation of alkenes is described. A series of alkenes could be selectively converted into the corresponding aminoiodination products, which are versatile building blocks in organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry. Wide substrate scope, broad functional group tolerance and easy scale-up operation make this protocol very practical and attractive in synthetic chemistry.

Abstract:Ring-opening iodination or bromination of unstrained cycloalkanols with NaI or NaBr and PhI(OAc)2 under visible light irradiation is developed. In this protocol the concentration of I2 is modulated through the generation of triiodide (I3-), thus significantly avoiding undesired side reactions. The reaction is under mild conditions and has a wide substrate scope, thus providing a practically useful method for accessing ω-iodo or ω-bromoketones.

Abstract:This study describes a catalyst-free α-acyloxylation of ketones and a KBr-mediated α-acyloxylation of cyclic ethers. These conversions are effectively mediated by hypervalent iodine(III) reagents serving dual roles as the oxidant and nucleophilic source. Consequently, esters are produced directly in moderate to excellent yields. The proposed method features good functional group compatibility, a broad substrate scope, and high synthetic efficiency and is remarkably environmentally friendly.

Abstract:A highly enantioselective palladium-catalyzed iodine atom transfer cycloisomerization of unactivated alkenes has been developed. This represents the first example of highly enantioselective carboiodination of olefin-tethered aryl iodides, which provides a perfect atom economy method to construct a series of optically active 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran, indolines and chromane bearing an alkyl iodide group in moderate to good yields. Moreover, the use of readily available starting materials, a broad substrate scope, high selectivity, mild reaction conditions, as well as versatile transformation of the product make this approach attractive. The mechanism of this Pd(0)-catalyzed asymmetric carboiodination of alkenes has been investigated with density functional theory.

Abstract:A highly effective and selective FeBr3 promoted deuterium bromination/cyclization of 1,n-enynes is reported. On one hand, the Lewis acid FeBr3 as catalyst, promoted cyclization of 1,n-enynes to afford cyclization with high efficiency. On the other hand, FeBr3 serves as the bromine source (with D2O as deuterium source) to promote the desired deuterated pyrrole derivatives containing alkenyl bromide groups. This protocol provides an effective pathway to afford deuterated alkenyl brominative compounds in (Z)-isomers with high yields and selectivity and a new way to introduce 2H into organic compounds.

Abstract:An efficient and novel bromide-catalyzed oxo-amination of aryl alkenes towards the synthesis of α-amine ketones using air as the oxygen source under electrophotocatalytic conditions was developed. The reaction was characterized by simple operation, a broad substrate scope, high atom economy, and mild reaction conditions. The mechanistic results suggested that the generation of 2-bromo-1-phenylethanone via oxo-bromination of aryl alkenes was supposed as the key step in this transformation.

Abstract:A new strategy for the synthesis of α-alkylated ketones via tandem acceptorless dehydrogenation/α-alkylation from secondary and primary alcohols was proposed and accomplished. In the presence of metal-ligand bifunctional iridium complex [Cp*Ir(2,2'-bpyO)(H2O)], various desirable products were obtained in high yields. Compared with previous methods for the direct dehydrogenative coupling of secondary alcohols with primary alcohols to α-alkylated ketones, this protocol has obvious advantages including complete selectivity for α-alkylated ketones and more environmentally benign conditions. Notably, the study also exhibited the potential to develop tandem reactions catalyzed using a metal-ligand bifunctional iridium complex.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary A metal‐free, green, and sustainable functionalization of unactivated alkyl sp3 C–H bonds is reported using iodine (III) as a feasible dehydrogenation agent under visible light or KBr, and alkyl chlorides, bromides, alcohols, and ketones could be constructed by addition of different coupling reagents. Cheap and safe iodobenzene diacetate was used to form a radical to activate the alkyl sp3 C–H bond in a highly efficient manner, which can construct different alkylation products by adding corresponding coupling reagents. Abstract:The traditional method for the preparation of alkylboronic esters involves transition metal catalysis or transition metal-free methods relying on single electron transfer. Each method relies on the suitable choice of catalyst or electron transfer mediator. In this study, we have developed a new method for the synthesis of alkylboronic esters from alkyl chlorides and diboron(4) compounds, without the need for additional metal or non-metal catalysts. We discovered that under 400 nm visible light irradiation, alkyl chlorides can be activated in the presence of bis(neopentyl glycolato)diboron and an alkoxide base to form alkyl radical intermediates, which then react with diboron(4) compounds, resulting in high yields of alkylboronic esters. The reaction is applicable to both primary and secondary alkyl chlorides. The simplicity of operation and the broad substrate scope of this method make it practical for the synthesis of valuable alkylboronic ester intermediates. Under 400 nm visible light irradiation, primary and secondary alkyl chlorides can be activated in the presence of bis(neopentyl glycolato)diboron and an tert-butoxide to form alkyl radicals, which then react with diboron(4) compounds to afford alkylboronic esters. Abstract:A photoinduced esterification reaction has been developed. In this reaction, benzylsilane shows very nice reactivity and selectivity, affording the corresponding esters as the only products. Under photo irradiation, the highly active bromo radical can be generated from the pre-catalyst CBr4, which would promote the initial CSi bond cleavage of benzylsilane via single electron transfer and the final transformation of acetal into ester via proton transfer. The existence of oxygen can not only oxidize the in situ generated benzyl radical into aldehyde intermediate, but also assist to regenerate bromo radical from bromine anion.

Abstract:Practical approaches for chemoselective mono-bromination, di-bromination, and tetra-bromination of terminal alkynes to generate 1-bromoalkynes, 1,2-dibromoalkenes, α,α-dibromoketones, and 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoalkanes based on efficient oxidative brominations mediated by a hypervalent iodine reagent have been developed. Chemoselective bromination can be realized under mild conditions by altering the bromine source. The tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBAB)/(diacetoxyiodo)benzene (PIDA) system is specific for mono-bromination to provide 1-bromoalkynes, while the NaBr/PIDA system is selective toward di-bromination to achieve 1,2-dibromoalkenes. When a certain amount of water was added to the NaBr/PIDA system, a different di-bromination product, α,α-dibromo ketones, was generated. Tetra-bromination of terminal alkynes provides an efficient protocol for the synthesis of 1,1,2,2-tetrabromoalkanes in a system with an excess loading of NaBr/PIDA in one pot. This bromination affords good yields (up to 99%) with excellent chemoselectivity (up to 100%). These methods can be applied to the efficient chemoselective synthesis of bromide derivatives, intermediates, and related biologically active compounds.

Abstract:A visible-light-promoted tandem radical intramolecular 5-exo-trig cyclization/heteroarylation between N-allyl-2-bromo-2,2-difluoroacetamides and quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones or coumarins has been developed without an external photocatalyst. By applying this new approach, a broad range of valuable α,α-difluoro-γ-lactam-fused quinoxalin-2(1H)-ones and coumarins (49 examples) can be facilely obtained at room temperature, thus showing the wide utility of this protocol. Moreover, mechanistic experiments reveal an involvement of an electron donor-acceptor (EDA) complex in this transformation.

Abstract:A photo-induced electron donor–acceptor (EDA) complex enabled tandem reaction of alkyne ketones via a radical difluoroalkylation/cyclization cascade sequence is reported. The EDA complex plays a key role, and the C – Br bond homolysis process may also be involved for this transformation. Varieties of difluoroalkyl-substituted thiofavones can be smoothly assembled in moderate to good yields under photocatalyst-, metal- and oxidant-free conditions, thus offering potential applications for pharmaceutical research.

Abstract:A phenyliodine(III) diacetate-promoted/1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoroisopropanol-controlled dearomative spirocyclization of phenolic ketones was reported, providing two libraries of structurally interesting scaffolds, spirocyclohexadienonic ketals and their acetoxylated counterparts, in moderate to excellent yields under mild conditions. Control experiments unravel that the reaction proceeds through a spirocyclohexadienone-oxocarbenium cation species. In addition, an in situ-generated hypervalent iodine(III)-catalyzed version, as well as the late-stage transformation of products via conjugate additions, was also realized.
