Abstract:Due to the increased risk and cost of phosphate depletion, there is an increasing demand for low-phosphorus or bio-based phosphorus flame inhibitors. Two composites of biologically-based phosphorus sources that chelate transition metal ions were synthesized via assembly method, namely, manganese @ phosphorus complex (Mn-PMC) and nickel @ phosphorus complex (Ni-PMC). Chemical bonds formed by chelating metal ions with phytic acid was involved in this preparation. The structure and binding states of the composites were examined by Scanning electron microscope (SEM), Scanning transmission microscope (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Specific surface area (BET) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Mn-PMC and Ni-PMC (i) are nanoscale materials with well dispersed, (ii) are amorphous structures with many binding sites exposed and have excellent interface compatibility, (iii) contains no halogen elements. Combustion inhibition experiments and TG-IR-MS tests indicate (i) that the inhibition efficiency of the two prepared inhibitors is significantly higher than that of commercial phosphate-containing inhibitor ADP. Among them, Ni-PMC has the best effect, and the cellulose sample containing it would automatically extinguish after igniting. (ii) two inhibitors greatly reduce the laminar flame velocity and flame temperature of cellulose. (iii) their flame suppression mechanism is that pyrolysis releases transition metal ions in the gas phase which can capture combustion free radicals to form oxides and hydroxides, thus inhibiting the combustion reaction. This work is helpful for the development of more efficient transition metal fire extinguishing agents to replace traditional phosphorus resources.
