Abstract:We study the recently discovered 117-Kelvin superconducting system C60/CHBr3 of the field-effect transistor and propose a possibility that the intercalation molecule CHBr3 plays a role of an electric capacitor in the C60 fullerene superconductor, which contrasts rather with an expectation that the intercalation molecule in that system acts as simple spacer molecule. Estimating the critical temperatures Tc for several C60/X (X: intercalation molecule), we suggest searching for intercalation molecules with large molecular polarizabilities, in order to attain higher Tc in the synthesis of fullerene superconductors and to more systematically develop high Tc superconducting electronic devices.

Abstract:Alkali-fulleride superconductors with a maximum critical temperature T-c similar to 40 K exhibit a similar electronic phase diagram to that of unconventional high-T-c superconductors. Here we employ cryogenic scanning tunneling microscopy to show that trilayer K3C60 displays fully gapped strong coupling s-wave superconductivity, accompanied by a pseudogap above T-c similar to 22 K and within vortices. A precise control of the electronic correlations and potassium doping enables us to reveal that superconductivity occurs near a superconductor-Mott-insulator transition and reaches maximum at half-filling. The s-wave symmetry retains over the entire phase diagram, which, in conjunction with an abrupt decline of the superconductivity below half-filling, indicates that alkali fullerides are predominantly phonon-mediated superconductors, although the electronic correlations also come into play.

Abstract:With the discovery of Tc s over 100K, continuously biased hole-doped semiconductive C60+y has joined the family of high-temperature superconductors (HTSC) previously dominated by the ceramic cuprates. The phase diagrams of these two quite different materials are remarkably similar, despite the absence from undoped C60+y of magnetic order. This supports percolative models of HTSC based on strong electron-phonon interactions. These models explain observed fine structure in the C60+y phase diagrams, and furthermore suggest novel paths to still higher Tc s.

Abstract:The intrinsic, reproducible temperature dependent functional forms of the resistivity for high quality K and Rb intercalated single crystals of C60 are obtained. Important parameters of normal and superconducting states have been obtained through transport and magnetotransport measurements. Extremely sharp transition width ~0.2K and pure 3-D superconducting fluctuation conductivity observed in these crystals have further guaranteed that the measured normal and superconducting properties are intrinsic. These results have put stringent experimental constrains on various models of the superconductivity. The effects of intercalation induced imperfection, such as 0-D fluctuation effect and upper critical field enhancement, are discussed.

Abstract:Re6Hf, which crystallizes in alpha-Mn structure(space group I (4) over bar 3m) without a spatial inversion center, is a superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature T-c approximate to 6.2 K. The measurements of magnetic susceptibility (chi), resistivity (rho), and specific heat capacity (C) were carried out. Bulk superconductivity is revealed by the jump at T-c of the specific heat with Delta C/gamma T-n(c) approximate to 1.63, suggesting moderate electron-electron coupling strength in this system. The upper critical field mu H-0(c2)WHH (0) was estimated to be of 89 kOe, and mu H-0(c2)GL (0) = 107 kOe, which is close to the Pauli limiting field. The Ginzburg Landau parameter kappa(GL) = 50.2, indicates that Re6Hf is a type-II superconductor. The temperature dependence of the electronic specific heat C-el (T) in the superconducting state can be explained by BCS theory. Furthermore, the magnetic-field dependence of gamma(H) is found to be linear with respect to H. These results imply a dominant s-wave superconductivity in Re6Hf.

Abstract:The valence band evolution Of C-60 film upon Yb intercalation is investigated by the synchrotron radiation photoemission spectroscopy (SR-PES) technique. The results show that only Yb2.75C60 forms at lower intercalation stages and imply that other phases of YbxC60 (x > 2.75) form with more Yb atoms intercalated into the Yb2.75C60 sample. No Fermi edge is observed for all the spectral lines in this work, which reveals that the superconducting Yb fulleride, whether it is Yb2.75C60 or other phase, has semiconducting property at room temperature. To extract the intrinsic density of state of the valence band from the Yb 4f-superposed experimental data, the SR-PE spectra were measured for the well-defined phase of Yb2,75C60 with varying photon energies (18.0-45.0 eV). The results show that the spectral data can drastically depart from the density of states of the valence band due to the photoemission of Yb 4f core levels. However, the valence band can, still be quantitatively extracted from the experimental data by the least-square simulation.

Abstract:The superconducting parameters are the key for building or identifying the theory responsible for the mechanism of superconductivity. Such parameters for fulleride superconductors have not been well established despite the tremendous efforts over the past 30 years. Here we provide a full set of parameters through a systematic study on a well-characterized K3C60 sample. The obtained high upper critical field of 33.0 ± 0.5 T from the direct electrical transport measurements together with the relatively high critical temperature and large critical current density classifies K3C60 as a promising three-dimensional superconducting magnet material with the advantage of the rich carbon abundance on the Earth. The evaluation of all self-consistently obtained parameters suggests the unconventional nature of the superconductivity for K 3 C60 with the joint contributions from the electron–phonon coupling and electron correlations. These results and findings are important not only for fundamentally understanding the superconductivity in fullerides but also for future superconducting magnet developments and applications.

Abstract:We perform a combined experimental-theoretical study of the Fe-oxychalcogenides $(\mathrm{FeO}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}Ch)$ series ${\mathrm{La}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{2}{\mathrm{Fe}}_{2}\mathrm{O}{M}_{2}$ ($M=\mathrm{S}$, Se), which are among the latest Fe-based materials with the potential to show unconventional high-${T}_{c}$ superconductivity (HTSC). A combination of incoherent Hubbard features in x-ray absorption and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering spectra, as well as resistivity data, reveal that the parent $\mathrm{FeO}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}Ch$ are correlation-driven insulators. To uncover microscopics underlying these findings, we perform local density approximation-plus-dynamical mean field theory (LDA+DMFT) calculations that reveal a novel Mott-Kondo insulating state. Based upon good agreement between theory and a range of data, we propose that $\mathrm{FeO}\phantom{\rule{0.16em}{0ex}}Ch$ may constitute an ideal testing ground to explore HTSC arising from a strange metal proximate to a novel selective-Mott quantum criticality.
Clathrate Structure of Fullerite C60

Abstract:Investigations of clathrate structures have gained a new impetus with the recent discovery of room-temperature superconductivity in metal hydrides. Here we report the finding, through density functional theory calculations, of a clathrate phase in the fullerite C60 system. Intermolecular bonds of the type 5/5 2+3 cycloaddition are induced between each C60 molecule and its twelve nearest neighbors in the face centered cubic lattice. Remarkably, this bonding creates on octahedral sites new C60 cages, identical to the original ones, and on tetrahedral sites distorted sodalite-like cages. The resulting carbon clathrate has a Pm-3 simple cubic structure with half of the original face centered lattice constant. Eighty per cent of its atoms are sp3-hybridized, driving a narrow-gap semiconducting behavior, a moderate bulk modulus of 268GPa and an estimated hardness of 21.6GPa. This new phase is likely to be prepared by subjecting C60 to high pressure and high temperature conditions.

Superconductivity in the Intercalated Graphite Compounds C6Yb and C6Ca

Abstract:In this letter we report the discovery of superconductivity in the isostructural graphite intercalation compounds C6Yb and C6Ca, with transition temperatures of 6.5K and 11.5K respectively. A structural characterisation of these compounds shows them to be hexagonal layered systems in the same class as other graphite intercalates. If we assume that all the outer s-electrons are transferred from the intercalant to the graphite sheets, then the charge transfer in these compounds is comparable to other superconducting graphite intercalants such as C8K 1,2 . However, the superconducting transition temperatures of C6Yb and C6Ca are up to two orders of magnitude greater. Interestingly, superconducting upper critical field studies and resistivity measurements suggest that these compounds are significantly more isotropic than pure graphite. This is unexpected as the effect of introducing the intercalant is to move the graphite layer further apart.

Abstract:X-ray diffraction studies show that the alkali-doped fullerene has the same structure as C60 with FCC symmetry and the lattice parameter of the alkali- doped fullerene is smaller than that of C60 due to the coulomb interaction between alkali cations and C60 anions. AC susceptibility and microwave absorption measurements confirm that K3C60 and Rb3C60 are superconducting with the onset Tc of 18K and 28K, respectively. The microwave absorption hysteresis measurements give an evidence of existing superconducting phase with the onset Tc of about 26K in the potassium-doped fullerene.

Abstract: Alkali-fulleride superconductors with a maximum critical temperature Tc of 40 K exhibit similar electronic phase diagram with unconventional high-Tc superconductors where the superconductivity resides proximate to a magnetic Mott-insulating state. However, distinct from cuprate compounds, which superconduct through two-dimensional (2D) CuO2 planes, alkali fullerides are attributed to the three-dimensional (3D) members of high-Tc family. Here, we employ scanning tunneling microscopy to show that trilayer K3C60 displays fully gapped strong coupling s-wave superconductivity that coexists spatially with a cuprate-like pseudogap state above Tc = 22 K and within vortices. A precise control of electronic correlations and doping reveals that superconductivity occurs near a superconductor-Mott insulator transition and reaches maximum at half-filling. The s-wave symmetry retains over the entire phase diagram, which, in conjunction with an abrupt decline of superconductivity below half-filling, demonstrates that alkali fullerides are predominantly phonon-mediated superconductors, although the multiorbital electronic correlations also come into play.
On a Possible Melting Curve of C60 Fullerite

Abstract:We study the thermodynamic properties of the high-temperature modification of fullerites on the basis of the Girifalco intermolecular potential. In the present work, using Lindemann's melting criterion, we estimate a possible melting curve Tm(P) of C60 fullerite. To take into account the lattice anharmonicity, which has a strong effect at T > 700 K, we use the correlative method of unsymmetrized self-consistent field. To check this approach, first we have applied it to solid Ar. In the range between its triple point Tt = 83.807 K and 260 K we obtained the mean square relative deviation from experimental data of about 0.7%. The melting curve for C60 fullerite has been calculated from the melting point at normal pressure estimated at 1500 K up to 15 kbar, which corresponds to Tm = 4000 K, i.e. to the temperature estimated by Kim and Tom\'anek [Phys. Rev. Lett. 72, 2418 (1994)] as that of the decomposition of the C60 molecule itself.

Abstract:We present the results of specific heat measurements on single crystals of C60 in (pure) fcc and (toluene containing) orthorhombic phases. The orientational ordering phase transitions are at surprisingly close temperatures (260K and 239K) for the two polytypes. The single crystal results are compared with DSC measurements on powders.

Abstract:Dynamical fluctuations of the elastic strain in strongly correlated systems are known to affect the onset of metal-to-insulator or superconducting transitions. Here we report their effect on the properties of a family of bandwidth-controlled alkali-intercalated fullerene superconductors. We introduce elastic strain through static local structural disorder in a systematic and controllable way in the fcc-structured K x Cs3-x C60 (with potassium content, 0.22 ≤ x K ≤ 2) series of compositions by utilizing the difference in size between the K+ and Cs+ co-dopants. The occurrence of the crossover from the Mott-Jahn-Teller insulating (MJTI) state into the strongly correlated Jahn-Teller metal (JTM) on cooling is evidenced for the compositions with x K < 1.28 by both synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction (SXRPD) - anomalous reduction of the unit cell volume - and 133Cs NMR spectroscopy - sudden suppression in the 133Cs spin-lattice relaxation rates. The emerging superconducting state with a maximum critical temperature, T c = 30.9 K shows a characteristic dome-like dependence on the unit-cell volume or equivalently, on the ratio between the on-site Coulomb repulsion, U, and the bandwidth, W. However, compared to the parent Cs3C60 composition in which cation disorder effects are completely absent, the maximum T c is lower by ∼12%. The reduction in T c displays a linear dependence on the variance of the tetrahedral-site cation size, σ T 2, thus establishing a clear link between structural-disorder-induced attenuation of critical elastic strain fluctuations and the electronic ground state.

Abstract:Experimental discovery that compressed sulphur hydride exhibits superconducting transition temperature Tc=203 K (Drozdov et al 2015 Nature 525 73) sparked intensive studies of superconducting hydrides. However, this discovery was not a straight forward experimental examination of theoretically predicted phase, instead it was nearly five-decade long experimental quest for superconductivity in highly-compressed matters, which varied from pure elements (hydrogen, oxygen, sulphur, lithium), cuprates, and hydrides (SiH4, YH3, and AlH3), to semiconductors and ionic salts. One of these salts was cesium iodide, CsI, which converts into metallic state at P=115 GPa and at P=180 GPa this compound exhibits the onset of the superconducting transition temperature Tc~2 K (Eremets et al 1998 Science 281 1333). Detailed first principles calculations (Xu et al 2009 Phys Rev B 79 144110) showed that within Eliashberg theory of superconductivity, the CsI should exhibits Tc=0.03 K at pressure P=180 GPa, which is by two orders of magnitude lower than the observed value. In attempt to understand the nature of this discrepancy, here we analyzed temperature dependent resistance in compressed CsI and found that this compound is perfect Fermi liquid metal which exhibits extremely high (~ 17) ratio of the Debye temperature, Td, to the Fermi energy, Tf. This implies that direct utilization of the Eliashberg theory is incorrect for this compound, because the theory valid for the ratio Td/Tf << 1. We also showed that highly-compressed CsI exhibits the ratio of Tc/Tf = 0.04-0.07 and it falls in unconventional superconductors band in the Uemura plot.

Superconductivity in CH4 and BH4- Containing Compounds Derived from the High-Pressure Superhydrides

Abstract:Inspired by the synthesis of the high-pressure Fm-3m LaH10 superconducting superhydride, systematic density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to study ternaries that could be derived from it by replacing two of the hydrogen atoms with boron or carbon and varying the identity of the electropositive element. Though many of the resulting alkali-metal and alkaline-earth MC2H8 phases are predicted to be dynamically stable at mild pressures, their superconducting critical temperatures (Tcs) are low because their metallicity results from the filling of an electride-like band. Substitution with a trivalent element leads to phases with substantial metal d-character at the Fermi level whose Tcs are typically above 40 K. Among the MB2H8 phases examined, KB2H8, RbB2H8 and CsB2H8 are predicted to be dynamically stable at very mild pressures, and their stability is rationalized by a DFT-Chemical Pressure analysis that elucidates the role of the M atom size. Quantum anharmonic effects strongly affect the properties of KB2H8, the highest predicted Tc compound, near 10 GPa, but molecular dynamics simulations reveal it would decompose below its Tc at this pressure. Nonetheless, at ca. 50 GPa KB2H8 is predicted to be thermally stable with a superconducting figure of merit surpassing that of the recently synthesized LaBeH8.

Abstract:The alkali-doped fulleride Cs$_{3}$C$_{60}$, crystallized in the space group Fm$\overline 3$m or Pm$\overline 3$n, exhibits unconventional $s$-wave superconductivity under pressure with a maximum $T_c\sim 38$ K. Recently, a new primitive-cubic-structured Cs$_{3}$C$_{60}$ phase corresponding to the space group Pa$\overline 3$ has been reported (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2208.09429" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2208.09429">arXiv:2208.09429</a>) and the authors observed superconductivity at ambient pressure. Using density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show that the proposed Pa$\overline 3$ structure is not stable under ionic relaxation, but transforms into the FCC structure. We study the normal and superconducting state of the stable FCC phase at different temperatures and volumes using DFT plus dynamical mean-field theory (DFT+DMFT) in the Nambu formalism. As temperature increases, the transition between superconductor and normal metal (Mott insulator) at small (big) volume is found to be second (first) order. The recently developed maximum entropy analytic continuation method for the anomalous-self-energy is used to study the momentum-resolved spectra and optical conductivity.

Abstract:We propose a new class of Graphite Intercalation Compounds (GICs) containing C60 and alkali metals. The compound C32K4C60 is predicted and attempts to synthesize it using a C8K precursor and benzene-dissolved C60 are reported. C8K samples exposed to C60 and benzene display a reproducible resistive transition at 19.5K indicative of superconductivity. C8K samples exposed to benzene alone show no transition for T > 4.2K. Possible origins of the superconductivity are discussed.
