Abstract:This paper provides a model for the machine parts assignment problem in a manufacturing system. The manufacturing system considered represents a multi-machine, multi-product production environment with an automated material handling system for the conveyance of parts. Each individual machine in the system is capable of performing many different operations and, thus, each machine part may have alternative routes through the system. The objective of this work is to arrive at a workload assignment which would maximize the operating profit of the system. The revenue component is determined from an assumed price—volume relationship (price-breaks) and the cost component is determined from the costs of inputs required for both machining and transporting parts. The model formulated consists of a series of multi-commodity flow problems. An extensive illustrative example is provided and relevant production issues are highlighted where appropriate.
