Abstract:The selective adsorption of contaminants using molecularly imprinted polymers has become popular in the environmental field, but the performance of these adsorbents in water remains poor because of the “solvent memory” of organic porogens. Herein, a novel deep eutectic solvent (DES) was used as a hydrophilic functional monomer to prepare a water-compatible molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) in water for the selective adsorption of bisphenol A (BPA) from aqueous solution. The results of batch experiments showed that the MIP had a maximum adsorption capacity of 110.15 mg g -1 toward BPA and the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models were suitable for analyzing the BPA adsorption process. Results of the MIP as fixed-bed adsorbent illustrated that the breakthrough time prolonged with the adsorbent mass increasing, while forwarded with the BPA inlet concentration and flow rate increasing. Both the Thomas and Yoon Nelson models could effectively describe fixed-bed adsorption. The MIP was used as a pretreatment column adsorbent in combination with high-performance liquid chromatography for the determination of BPA in eight environmental samples with satisfactory recoveries of 91.02%-108.20%. In this study, a promising method has been developed for the preparation of water-compatible MIPs for the selective adsorption of BPA in the environmental field.
