Abstract:Heavy fuels, kerosene and diesel, have been tried more and more on spark ignition internal combustion engines to achieve high power-weight ratio in recent years. Air assisted fuel injection (ASFI) system is considered as an effective means to improve the spray atomization of heavy fuel. It has been widely studied, most of which are for aviation kerosene. The research on diesel air-assisted injection is very few, and the influence of different distillate fuels on the performance of ASFI system is still unclear. Based on constant volume chamber, the ASFI spray characteristics of diesel, aviation kerosene and gasoline were studied by means of M-scattering and shadowing, and the performance of fuel spray under different chamber pressure, ambient temperature and fuel injection duration was investigated. The results show that, under the same reference condition, the spray penetration velocity and spray angle decreases with the increase of fuel viscosity. With the increase of the chamber pressure, fuel with lower viscosity increases more on spray volume and penetration velocity, less on spray angle. When ambient temperature rises, the liquid-phase penetration of the three kinds of fuel is accelerated, the spray angle of kerosene and gasoline increases obviously, while diesel with more viscosity increases less. The increase of the injection duration of the fuel injector has a dual effect on spray atomization and initial velocity, and the higher viscosity the fuel, the more obvious the effect on atomization is.
