Abstract:A novel task-specific ionic liquid (PyTri-TSIL) decorated with 2, 6-bis-triazolyl-pyridine moiety was synthesized via the click chemistry route. The performance of PyTri-TSIL in an ionic liquid C(4)mimNTf(2) for the selective separation of trivalent americium from lanthanide was systematically studied. PyTri-TSIL exhibits significantly stronger extractability to Am(III) over Eu(III) from diluted nitric acid medium, leading to high Am/Eu separation factors (> 100). The chemical stoichiometry of the extractive species was determined to be 1:3 (metal/ligand) by slope analysis, and a cation exchange mechanism was proposed by analyzing the effects of NO3- and C4mim+ concentrations on the extraction. The extraction mechanism was further elucidated by investigating the coor-dination chemistry of PyTri-TSIL with Am(III) and representative lanthanides (Nd(III) and Eu(III)) in C(4)mimNTf(2) through spectrophotometric titrations. Two metal/PyTri-TSIL complexes (metal:ligand = 1:2 and 1:3) were identified to form successively in the homogeneous IL phase during the titrations. The results from this work highlight the potential of task-specific ionic liquid in trivalent actinide/lanthanide separation and provide further insight into the coordination chemistry of f-elements in ionic liquids.
