Abstract:Silver plasma plume is one of the potential sources for high-order harmonics generation (HHG) using a driving pulse of 800 nm (Ti: S laser system). The harmonic intensity (yield) and cut-off are significantly affected by ablating laser pulse duration. This work extended the harmonics generation using silver [bulk and nanoparticles (100 nm and 20 nm)] plasma plumes ablated by fs laser pulses. The shorter pulse duration of fs pulses leads to enhanced ions' density, which improves the harmonics' intensity and cut-off (65H). Moreover, the experimental harmonic cut-off for Ag+ is precisely matched with the theoretical cut-off. In Ag2+ ions, the experimental cut-off is ∼1.3 times less than the theoretical cut-off. In addition, we have measured the harmonic spectra of samples using negatively and positively chirped 135 fs driving pulses and compared them with chirp-free 35 fs driving pulse harmonic spectra. The negative and positive chirps of the pulses lead to blueshift and redshift of the harmonic's spectra, with an increase of intensity of low (9H–15H) and higher (17H–41H) range harmonics, respectively. However, the comparison between bulk and nanoparticles (NPs) studies proved that the smallest NPs possess larger HHG efficiency. The present study highlights the selection of short pulse duration, i.e., fs pulses as driving and ablating laser pulses, for enhancing the yield and cut-off of harmonics for next-generation table-top XUV light sources.

Abstract:The methods of enhancement of the strong high-order harmonics of femtosecond pulses in laser-induced plasma are demonstrated. It comprises the application of the four techniques allowing the enhancement of harmonics in different spectral ranges. Among them are the selection of targets for ablation to create the conditions for resonance enhancement of single harmonic, formation of the quasi-phase-matching of a spectrally tunable group of harmonics, application of the two-color pump of plasma, and the formation of nanoparticles-contained plasmas. The number of generated coherent XUV photons increased in the region of single resonantly enhanced harmonic (62 nm) and the shorter-wavelength region (30–50 nm). The above techniques of harmonics enhancement allowed a significant (up to 50 times) growth in a whole harmonic yield in the case of indium plasma. We discuss the reasons preventing the joint implementation of the four methods of harmonics enhancement in the same spectral region.

Abstract:By introducing preplasma truncation to cases with an initial preplasma scale length larger than 0.2λ, the efficiency of high-order harmonics generated from relativistic laser-solid interactions can be enhanced by more than one order of magnitude and the angular spread can be confined into near-diffraction-limited divergence. Numerical simulations show that density truncation results in more compact oscillation of the surface electron sheet and the curvature of the reflection surface for the driving laser is greatly reduced. This leads to an overall improvement in the harmonic beam quality. More importantly, density truncation makes the harmonic generation weakly dependent on the preplasma scale length, which provides a way to relax the extremely high requirement on the temporal contrast of the driving laser pulse. A feasible scheme to realize the required preplasma truncation is also proposed and demonstrated by numerical simulations.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate high-order harmonic generation by employing strong-field approximation (SFA) and present a new approach to the extension of the high-order harmonic cutoff frequency via an exploration of the dependence of high-order harmonic generation on the waveform of laser fields. The dependence is investigated via detailed analysis of the classical trajectories of the ionized electron moving in the continuum in the velocity-position plane. The classical trajectory consists of three sections (Acceleration Away, Deceleration Away, and Acceleration Back), and their relationship with the electron recollision energy is investigated. The analysis of classical trajectories indicates that, besides the final (Acceleration Back) section, the electron recollision energy also relies on the previous two sections. We simultaneously optimize the waveform in all three sections to increase the electron recollision energy, and an extension of the cutoff frequency up to I-p + 20.26U(p) is presented with a theoretically synthesized waveform of the laser field.

Abstract:We report on the harmonics radiation and spectrum properties in the Xe–Ar gas mixture by using tight focusing laser pulses. The cutoff position is extended from the harmonic H33–H37 in mixed gases. The extended orders are attributed to the harmonic radiation from Xe+. We observe that the harmonics are decreased in the plateau region. The result is attributed to the destructive interference of the harmonics generated from the different atoms. Our results suggest that using the Xe–Ar mixture as nonlinear can obtain the coherent XUV source.

Abstract:Harmonics generated with fs laser pulses are not only among the most intense sources in the wavelength range of a few tens of nanometers but also a far better source than X-ray lasers from the coherence point of view. It is anticipated, that in the near future, the harmonics issued from femtosecond laser-produced plasmas will represent a coherent source much brighter than all other XUV sources apart from the XFEL. These particular aspects, correlated with the fact that high order harmonics produced by reflection of an ultrashort and intense laser pulse on an overdense plasma layer impose virtually no restrictions on the intensity of the laser employed, lead the way to a series of potential applications in plasma diagnostics and nonlinear optics. This work presents a theoretical study on the high harmonics generation mechanism occurring at the reflection of a femtosecond Ti-Sapphire terawatt laser pulse (λ0 = 0.8 μm and pulse durations around 100–150 fs) on an overdense steep Al plasma layer. Insights on how different laser parameters influence this generation mechanism and its efficiency are provided.

Abstract:Coherent extreme ultra-violet (XUV) and soft X-ray light with attosecond duration enable the time-resolved study of electron dynamics in a completely new regime. High order harmonic generation (HHG) from the highly nonlinear process of relativistically intense laser interactions with solid-density plasma offers a very new way to generate such a light source. In this paper, we study the HHG by a relativistically circularly polarized femtosecond laser interacting with solid-density plasma. The experiment is carried out by using a 200 TW Ti:sapphire laser system at the Laboratory for Laser Plasmas in Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China. The laser system can deliver laser pulses at 800 nm with a pulse duration (full width at half maximum, FWHM) of 25 fs and repetition rate of 10 Hz. The circularly polarized laser beam with an energy of 460 mJ is used in the experiment and focused by an F/4 off-axis parabolic mirror at an incidence angle of 40 with respect to the glass target. The focal spot diameter is 6 m (FWHM) with 25% energy enclosed, giving a calculated peak intensity of 1.61019 W/cm2. We detect high order harmonics by a flat-field spectrometer. The experimental results show that high order harmonic radiation can also be efficiently generated by a circularly polarized laser at a lager incidence angle, which provides a straightforward way to obtain a circularly polarized XUV light source. Different plasma density scale lengths are obtained by introducing a prepulse with different delays. We study the dependence of HHG efficiency on plasma density scale length by the circularly polarized laser, and find an optimal density scale length to exist. The influence of laser polarization and plasma density scale length on HHG are studied by two-dimensional (2D) PIC simulations. The good agreement is found between the 2D PIC simulations and experimental results. We plan to measure the polarization characteristics of high order harmonic produced by the interaction of circularly polarized lasers with solid target in the future. It is expected to obtain a compact coherent circularly polarized XUV light source, which can be used to study the ultra-fast dynamic process of magnetic materials.

Abstract:Mechanism of terahertz （THz） pulse generation in gases irradiated by ultrashort laser pulses is investigated theoretically. Quasi-static transverse currents produced by laser field ionization of gases and the longitudinal modulation in formed plasmas are responsible for the THz emission at the electron plasma frequency, as demonstrated by particle-in-cell simulations including field ionization. The THz field amplitude scaling with the laser amplitude within a large range is also discussed.

Abstract:We propose a new mechanism of high-order harmonic generation during an interaction of a high-intensity laser pulse with underdense plasma. A tightly focused laser pulse creates a cavity in plasma pushing electrons aside and exciting the wake wave and the bow wave. At the joint of the cavity wall and the bow wave boundary, an annular spike of electron density is formed. This spike surrounds the cavity and moves together with the laser pulse. Collective motion of electrons in the spike driven by the laser field generates high-order harmonics. A strong localization of the electron spike, its robustness to oscillations imposed by the laser field and, consequently, its ability to produce high-order harmonics is explained by catastrophe theory. The proposed mechanism explains the experimental observations of high-order harmonics with the 9 TW J-KAREN laser (JAEA, Japan) and the 120 TW Astra Gemini laser (CLF RAL, UK) [A. S. Pirozhkov, et al., arXiv:1004.4514 (2010); A. S. Pirozhkov et al, AIP Proceedings, this volume]. The theory is corroborated by high-resolution two- and three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations.

Abstract:This paper investigates experimentally high-order harmonic generation (HHG) of neon gas with 5-fs and 25-fs driving laser pulses. It has been demonstrated that the cutoff energy of the harmonic extreme ultraviolet photons is extended to 131 eV and the HHG spectrum near the cutoff region becomes continuum as the driving laser pulse duration is 5 fs; whereas much lower cutoff photon energy and discrete harmonic spectrum near the cutoff region are presented as the laser pulse duration is 25 fs. The results can be explained by the fact that neutral atoms can be exposed to more intense laser field before they are depleted by ionization because of the extremely short rising time of the few-cycle pulse. The 5-fs driving laser pulse paves the way of generation of coherent x-ray in the water window and single attosecond pulse.

Abstract:The concept of critical ionization fraction has been essential for high-harmonic generation, because it dictates the maximum driving laser intensity while preserving the phase matching of harmonics. In this work, we reveal a second, nonadiabatic critical ionization fraction, which substantially extends the phase-matched harmonic energy, arising because of the strong reshaping of the intense laser field in a gas plasma. We validate this understanding through a systematic comparison between experiment and theory for a wide range of laser conditions. In particular, the properties of the high-harmonic spectrum versus the laser intensity undergoes three distinctive scenarios: (i) coincidence with the single-atom cutoff, (ii) strong spectral extension, and (iii) spectral energy saturation. We present an analytical model that predicts the spectral extension and reveals the increasing importance of the nonadiabatic effects for mid-infrared lasers. These findings are important for the development of high-brightness soft x-ray sources for applications in spectroscopy and imaging.

Abstract:High-order harmonics generated by the interaction between intense femtosecond laser and matter have the characteristics of high single photon energy,ultrashort pulse duration,and excellent spatiotemporal coherence. It can be used as the tabletop ultrafast vacuum ultraviolet laser source and soft X-ray laser source in laboratory. At the same time, high-order harmonics are used to generate attosecond pulses. The generation of these advanced laser sources has greatly enriched the research tools of material science. In this review article, we introduce the principle, optimization,and application of high-order harmonics of gases and solids.

Abstract:The generation of high order harmonics from an inhomogeneous ovderdense plasma target irradiated by an ultra-short intense laser pulse is studied by numerical simulation. During such interaction, ultrafast electron bunches are generated and excite electron plasma oscillations as they pass through the overdense target. These plasma oscillations will emit high-frequency electromagnetic emission by linear mode conversion. Instead of the integer harmonics generation, the emission appears with a broadband and even continuous spectrum corresponding to the electron plasma frequency range of the inhomogeneous plasma density.

Abstract:Carbon-containing plasma is an attractive medium for generation of harmonics of laser pulses in the extreme ultraviolet range. We ablate two metal carbide (B4C and Cr3C2) nanoparticles and silicon carbide (SiC) nanoparticles and generate harmonics after propagation of 35 fs pulses through the laser-induced plasmas. We analyze the spectra, spectral shifts, and splitting of harmonics from nanoparticles-contained plasmas, which demonstrate the chirp-related harmonic cut-off scaling. In addition, we present the simplified two-color pump model calculations of HHG based on the strong field approximation.

Abstract:Relativistically intense laser solid target interaction has been proved to be a promising way to generate high-order harmonics, which can be used to diagnose ultrafast phenomena. However, their emission direction and spectra still lack tunability. Based upon two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations, we show that directional enhancement of selected high-order-harmonics can be realized using blazed grating targets. Such targets can select harmonics with frequencies being integer times of the grating frequency. Meanwhile, the radiation intensity and emission area of the harmonics are increased. The emission direction is controlled by tailoring the local blazed structure. Theoretical and electron dynamics analysis for harmonics generation, selection and directional enhancement from the interaction between multi-cycle laser and grating target are carried out. These studies will benefit the generation and application of laser plasma-based high order harmonics.

Abstract:The influence of laser temporal contrast on high-order harmonic generation from intense laser interactions with solid-density plasma surfaces is experimentally studied. A switchable plasma mirror system is set up to improve the contrast by two orders of magnitude at 10 ps prior to the main peak. By using the plasma mirror and tuning the prepulse, the dependence of high-order harmonic generation on laser contrast is investigated. Harmonics up to the 21 st order via the mechanism of coherent wake emission are observed only when the targets are irradiated by high contrast laser pulses by applying the plasma mirror.

Abstract:In this paper, we analytically and numerically studied the impact of the target thickness on the efficiency of laser-plasma based high-order harmonics generation (HHG). The optimal parametric region is acquired where the laser normalized amplitude ao, the target density ne and thickness d(0) satisfy the relation: a(0)n(c)/2 pi n(e) <= d(0) /lambda <=, a(0)n(c)/pi n(e) for n(e) >> a(0)n(c). In this region, the laser can partially penetrate the target, leading to efficient acceleration of the target. Meanwhile, the target is thick enough to oscillate along the rising edge of the laser without being broken, which guarantees the occurrence of HHG. Both one-dimensional and two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation results verify our optimal target thickness theory, and a single attosecond pulse with I = 3.0 x 10(20) W cm(-2) is generated under the driving of 8.6 x 10(20) W cm(-2) , which is several hundred times more intense than that from a thick target.

Abstract:High harmonic generation modulated by a weakly perturbing laser field enables new wave mixing frequency components, thus allowing in-situ spatiotemporal measurements and wavefront control of attosecond optical pulses. However, perturbative high harmonic wave mixing from plasma surfaces has not been investigated extensively. In this study, we theoretically analyze the plasma high harmonic generation process in the relativistic regime modulated by a perturbing laser field with an arbitrary frequency. New wave mixing frequency components satisfying the conservation laws of photon energy and momentum are observed. The wave mixing component intensities adhere to a power law for the perturbating laser photon number as the perturbing laser intensity increases, thereby revealing perturbative behaviors in the nonperturbative, extremely nonlinear optical process of high harmonic generation. Detailed studies reveal the polarization selection rule and physical mechanism of high harmonic wave mixing. The modulation of the relativistic factor or mass enhancement of electrons on the plasma surface by the perturbing laser field is believed to result in high harmonic wave mixing in the relativistic regime.

Abstract:Plasma high harmonics generation from an extremely intense short-pulse laser is explored by including the effects of ion motion, electron-ion collisions and radiation reaction force in the plasma dynamics. The laser radiation pressure induces plasma ion motion through the hole-boring effect resulting into the frequency shifting and widening of the harmonic spectra. Classical radiation reaction force slightly mitigates the frequency broadening caused by the ion motion. Based on the results and physical considerations, parameter maps highlighting optimum regions for generating a single intense attosecond pulse and coherent XUV radiations are presented.

Abstract:We present theoretical investigations of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) resulting from the interaction of noble gases with localized surface plasmons. These plasmonic fields are produced when a metal nanoparticle is subject to a few-cycle laser pulse. The enhanced field, which largely depends on the geometrical shape of the metallic structure, has a strong spatial dependency. We demonstrate that the strong non-homogeneity of this laser field plays an important role in the HHG process and leads to a significant increase of the harmonic cut-off energy. In order to understand and characterize this new feature, we include the functional form of the laser electric field obtained from recent attosecond streaking experiments [F. S{ü}ßmann and M. F. Kling, Proc. of SPIE, {\bf Vol. 8096}, 80961C (2011)] in the time dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE). By performing classical simulations of the HHG process we show consistency between them and the quantum mechanical predictions. These allow us to understand the origin of the extended harmonic spectra as a selection of particular trajectory sets. The use of metal nanoparticles shall pave a completely new way of generating coherent XUV light with a laser field which characteristics can be synthesized locally.
