Abstract:In nature, chirality displays itself in diverse forms and on various hierarchical scales. Among the various types of chirality, supramolecular chirality is of particular interest due to its ability to amplify and induce chirality, which aids in understanding the fundamental principles of chirality transfer and is also suitable for chirality applications at the macroscopic scale. Herein, we report the synthesis of a novel chiral organic semiconductor 2,9-di(hexan-2-yl)anthra[2,1,9-def:6,5,10-d'e'f']diisoquinoline-1,3,8,10 (2H, 9H)-tetraone (ClCPDI-C6) and its selfassembly into supramolecular nanowires (NWs). The chirality of the NWs was successfully transferred via intra- and inter-molecular interactions from the chiral pendant to the perylene diimide (PDI) core after self-assembly. Upon exposing the organic NWs to phenylhydrazine dopant vapor, the average mobility of the NW transistor was increased from 0.0085 to 0.026 cm2 V-1 s-1. Additionally, phenylhydrazine molecular doping of the NWs significantly enhanced their optical performance in comparison with the undoped NWs, with improved photoresponsivity (R) (similar to 3 times higher), photosensitivity (P) (similar to 10 times higher), external quantum efficiency (similar to 3 times higher), and detectivity (D*) (similar to 8 times higher). The detectivity of the phenylhydrazine-doped NWs was 1 or 2 orders of magnitude higher than that previously reported for chiral PDI NWs. Notably, they showed a fast and stable real-time photoswitching of both undoped and doped ClCPDI-C6 NWs (<90 ms), indicating a high sensitivity to visible light and great potential in photodetector and photoswitching applications. From density functional theory calculations, after absorbing phenylhydrazine on the ClCPDI-C6 NWs, the increased electron affinity contributes to increased optoelectronic performance. Our investigation paves the way for future in-depth studies on the relationship between the structure and supramolecular chirality with optoelectronic device performance.
Multifunctional Molecular Charge-Transfer Thin Films.

Abstract:We report the controlled interfacial interaction in crystallized organic charge transfer thin films, consisting of bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene and C60. The induced broad-band absorption from the UV to near-infrared region leads to a wavelength dependent ambipolar (negative/positive) photoresponse, while multi-stimuli responsive behavior is achieved through charge-transfer interactions. In addition, by coupling with the tetrathiafulvalene-(7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane) charge transfer complex, a significantly increased conductivity is achieved. The controlled interfacial charge transfer interaction provides an efficient approach to obtain multifunctional molecular crystallized thin films with a superior external stimuli response.

Abstract:Perylene bisimide derivatives substituted with one and two tetraphenylethene moieties at 1 and 1,7-postions show distinct optical properties. The former displays characteristic emission features of perylene bisimides in solution and red emission in the aggregate state, while the latter is nonemissive in solution but highly red-emissive in the aggregate state.

Abstract:Two tetraphenylethene (TPE) modified perylenebisimides (PBIs) were synthesized through linking the TPE moieties to the PBI core at the imide positions. Theoretical calculations predict that, in both of the mono-TPE and di-TPE substituted derivatives (i.e. TPE-N-PBI and DTPE-N-PBI), the TPE and PBI units are orthogonal to each other, and thus have no electronic conjugation. Thus the two compounds are TPE-PBI dyads rather than TPE-PBI conjugates. This property is supported by absorption and emission spectral features. In solution, aggregate and solid film, the fluorescence from both TPE and PBI subunits is evidently quenched. The underlying mechanism is the photo-induced charge transfer between the electron donor TPE and electron acceptor PBI subunits. In a highly polar tetrahydrofuran-water mixture with a large fraction of water, TPE-N-PBI can form H-aggregates. In low polar hydrophobic dichloromethane-hexane mixtures, due to the bulky size and rigidity of the TPE subunit, the dyad molecules cannot take a parallel alignment to form classical J- or H-aggregates, but have to exist in a large offset angle. Consequently, X-aggregates are formed, which was confirmed by the absorption features, morphological observations and comparative investigation of the reference compound.

Abstract:We synthesize three perylene bisimide-based triads with donor-acceptor-acceptor (D∼A1-A2) architectures, in which the distance between D and A1 is varied to study its influence on the excited state electron processes. Very different intramolecular charge transfer (D+∼A1-A2-) lifetimes in dichloromethane (DCM) for these three triads are revealed by steady-state and transient spectroscopies. Free-energy changes of charge transfer (CT) are calculated based on the single-crystal X-ray diffraction data and electrochemical measurements. The results show that photoinduced cascading CT comprises two competing processes in DCM (CTs in D∼A1 units and in A1-A2 units) by pumping of the A1 unit, and then the long-distance CT state is formed. The charge recombination (CR) process is restrained effectively by the increased distance between the anion and cation. This research reveals the importance of multistep cascading CTs on tuning the CT lifetime in multichromophoric systems.

Abstract:A donor-acceptor-donor molecule, PcZn-Pim-PcZn triad, which would be applied to improve the light absorption efficiency and achieve the efficient charge-separation states for appropriately long times, was prepared by reacting 3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic dianhydride (Pim) with tBu(3)(NH2)PcZn at 190 degrees C. The charge-separation process is anticipated to occur via the excited singlet state of the zinc phthalocyanines ((PcZn)-Pc-1*) and perylene ((1)Pim*), depending on the excitation wavelength of the light used in polar and nonpolar solvents. The lifetime of the charge separated states was estimated as 20-25 ns.

Abstract:Facile nucleophilic substitution of two chlorine atoms by 2,2'-biphenol at one of the two bay areas (1,12- and 6,7-positions) of core-tetrachlorinated perylene bisimide afforded a novel, completely desymmetrized perylene bisimide building block, which could be further functionalized by substitution of the remaining two chlorine atoms. The atropisomers (P- and M-enantiomers) of the core twisted perylene bisimides were resolved by HPLC on a chiral column at room temperature, and the activation parameters for racemization were elucidated.

Abstract:This article reports a comparative study on the synthesis, self-assembly, and photophysical properties of perylene diimides (PDIs) symmetrically tethered with long alkyl chains or polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) at the imide position and/or bromo substitutions at 1,7-positions of the bay area. This series of samples include dodecyl-PDIH-dodecyl (1), dodecyl-PDIBr-dodecyl (2), POSS-PDIHPOSS (3), and POSS-PDIBr-POSS (4). In solution, the PDIs with bromine substitution at bay area (2, 4) exhibit red-shifted absorption maximum compared to those without (1, 3), which is consistent with a twisted perylene chromophore as revealed by molecular simulation. Similar bathochromatic shift was observed on the solid crystal state emission of 2 as compared to 1. However, in crystals, the emission spectrum of 4 exhibits a seemingly hypochromatic shift relative to that of 3, which could be rationalized by their packing in the crystals. The bromo substitution is believed to partially quench the fluorescence and the relatively loose packing of the twisted p-plane of 4 may not be able to confine p-plane in place, leaving multiple pathways for fluorescent quenching rather than red-shifted emission. While both 3 and 4 exhibit a unique dimer packing scheme, the dimers have quite different longitudinal offset and transverse offset of the p-plane. The longitudinal offset in dimers of 4 is so large that the naphthalene moieties in the dimer almost adopt a face-to-face arrangement and their mutual interactions are considered relatively independent. All these contribute to the less red-shifted fluorescent emission and the lower fluorescent yields in crystals of 4 relative to 3 as compared to that in solution. The study shall shed light into the complicated mutual interactions among intrinsic electronic structure, microscopic molecular packing, and the macroscopic optoelectronic properties.

Abstract:Perylene diimide dyes bearing symmetrical and unsymmetrical phenoxy substituents at the bay positions (N,N′-diethylhexyl-1-bromo-7-pentafluorophenoxy-substituted perylene diimide and 1,7-diphenoxy-substituted perylene diimide) were prepared. 1H NMR analysis indicated that these compounds contain a small quantity of the 1,6-regioisomer, and yield intramolecular hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, their photophysical, electrochemical, aggregation, and thermal properties were studied. It was found that their photophysical properties, structure, aggregation, and thermal stability in the solid state depend on the structure of the phenoxy substituent.

Abstract:Organic chromic materials with photochromic and electrochromic properties are promising materials for photoelectric applications. Despite some reports indicating the presence of these properties in aromatic imide derivatives, the advancement of their enduring discoloration performance remains an unresolved challenge. Herein, we incorporated of charge-assisted anion-π interactions into aromatic imide derivatives as a strategy for improving the stability of generated free-radical, and a series of pyridinium-annelated perylene diimides salts (PAPDI-X, X = I − , Br − , Cl − , NO 3 − , PF 6 − ) were synthesized. With variations in the electron-donating capabilities (Lewis basicity) of the anions, the nature of anion-PDI interactions undergoes a transition from non-chromogenic anion-π interaction to chromogenic anion-induced electron transfer (ET) phenomenon, and these interactions have been fully characterized by UV/Vis, NMR, and EPR spectroscopies. Among the evaluated anions, Br- anion with moderate Lewis basicity participates in ET with PAPDI by light or voltage stimuli, and generate stable PAPDI-Br •− radical anion and PAPDI-Br 2- dianion in aprotic solvent or in solid state, thus making PAPDI-Br exhibit distinctive photo/electrochromic dual responsive behavior based on radical formation. This meaningful design provides new concepts for the design of organic chromic materials and shows great prospects in optoelectrical materials.

Abstract:The stable geometries of derivatives of perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid diimide have been obtained by AM1 and CNDO. The optimized geometries being contrasted with those in the solid crystals, compounds 3-5 exist in the planar structures with a higher bonding energy, which leads to the more effective packing of molecules. The linear relationship between the photosensitivity and the excitation energy of the N,N'-substituted diimide derivatives, and between the photosensitivity and the hole injection efficiency from the CGL to the CTL of the bis-arylimidazole derivatives have been studied by the least square fitting method. The correlation coefficient of the former is greater than 0.95, and that of the latter is greater than 0.97. The results reveal that the two steps of photoelectric transformation have different effect on the photosensitivity. The electron excitation energy occupies the first position in the N,N'-substituted diimide derivatives, while the hole injection efficiency occupies the first position in the bisarylimidazole derivatives.

Abstract:A series of perylene diimide derivatives 2a similar to 2d with the substitutions of secondary amino groups at bay positions, were synthesized via simple Ullmann reaction, and their energy levels were characterized. From the UV-vis absorption spectra, it was found that, after the introduction of secondary amino into the bay position, the band gaps of perylene diimides became narrower, and the maximum absorption peaks were significantly red-shifted while compared to non-substituted parent compound. Thus, their absorption bands extended to the near-IR range. Through cyclic voltammetry, it was disclosed that 2a, 2c, and 2d exhibited both reversible reduction and oxidation processes, and their HOMO energy levels increased greatly, indicating bipolar semiconductive characteristics. Preliminary investigation of the application of bis-morpholine substituted perylene diimide 2d in organic photovoltaic devices was performed, and the results demonstrated that 2d could be used as both electron acceptor and electron donor.

Abstract:Two novel aggregation-induced emission (AIE) active Schiff bases (P4C12 and P5C12) harnessing excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) process derived from tetraphenylethylene and 4-(dodecyloxy)-2-hydroxybenzaldehyde were reported. P4C12 exhibits photochromism in original powder and crystalline states. In contrast, P5C12 exhibits photochromism in original powder, but totally different photochromic and fluorescence properties in its two crystalline polymorphs. The reed leaf crystal (P5C12-A) exhibits very weak fluorescence and reversible photochromic behavior, while the small block crystal (P5C12–B) emits relatively stronger fluorescence without photochromism. Detailed investigations indicate that, different crystal packing styles result in different photoinactivation ways, accounting for different photochemical and photophysical properties. As photochromic molecules, P4C12 and P5C12 show reversible color and fluorescence changes upon UV light irradiation and visible light with good fatigue resistance, which makes them suitable for data storage and anti-counterfeiting materials. Moreover, P4C12 shows anisotropic crystal without liquid crystal texture, while P5C12 shows reversible liquid crystal with smectic phase.

Abstract:A binary compound containing strong electron donor and acceptor groups, (N,N-dimethylanilino)-CH2-9-cyanothrace ne (II), was synthesized, and its photophysical behaviour was studied. Intramolecular exciplex emission was observed in non-polar and moderately polar solvents, but not in polar solvents. Exciplex formation in non-polar and moderately polar solvents accounts for the exothermic electron transfer reaction and/or the efficient coupling of the amine lone pair with 9-cyanoanthracene π orbitals; in polar solvents, the molecular structure corresponds to a solvent-separated radical ion pair formed by intermolecular electron transfer, where the energy is dissipated via back electron transfer (BET) without fluorescence emission. A new, blue-shifted emission at 510 nm appears in the region of the local emission band for compound II at 77 K, which may originate from a ground state, charge transfer (CT) conformer. Abstract:An [Ag5I6] cluster-based coordination polymer has been successfully constructed with the assistance of a polydentate organic amine hexamethylenetetramine (Hmta) as the linker, [NH4][Ag5I6(Hmta)] (1). Compound 1 features an anionic 2D bilayer network wherein the combination of Ag(I) with I– and N atom gives rise to a novel [Ag5I6] secondary building unit and further generates the final architecture with free NH4 + being located in the space of the framework. Interestingly, compound 1 exhibits a cation exchange behavior which can efficiently capture and separate methylene blue (MB) in a binary mixture of dye solution. Desorption experiments have been performed, showing that the MB molecules in dye-loaded samples can be readily discharged when triggered by Na+. Moreover, reversible photochromism is observed for solid 1, displaying a rapid color response to light illumination.
