Abstract:N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHC) are nowadays ubiquitous and indispensable in many research fields, and it is not possible to imagine modern transition metal and main group element chemistry without the plethora of available NHCs with tailor-made electronic and steric properties. While their suitability to act as strong ligands toward transition metals has led to numerous applications of NHC complexes in homogeneous catalysis, their strong σ-donating and adaptable π-accepting abilities have also contributed to an impressive vitalization of main group chemistry with the isolation and characterization of NHC adducts of almost any element. Formally, NHC coordination to Lewis acids affords a transfer of nucleophilicity from the carbene carbon atom to the attached exocyclic moiety, and low-valent and low-coordinate adducts of the p-block elements with available lone pairs and/or polarized carbon-element π-bonds are able to act themselves as Lewis basic donor ligands toward transition metals. Accordingly, the availability of a large number of novel NHC adducts has not only produced new varieties of already existing ligand classes but has also allowed establishment of numerous complexes with unusual and often unprecedented element-metal bonds. This review aims at summarizing this development comprehensively and covers the usage of N-heterocyclic carbene adducts of the p-block elements as ligands in transition metal chemistry.

Abstract:A series of N -heterocyclic carbene (NHC) silver complexes derived from 6-[bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)methyl]-2-pyridylimidazole have been synthesized and characterized by physico-chemical and spectroscopic methods, and the structures of four complexes have been confirmed by X-ray structural analyses. The functionalized NHC is a monodentate ligand in (NHC)AgCl through the carbene carbon atom, and a bridging [C,N,N] tridentate ligand in (NHC) 2 Ag 2 (BF 4 ) 2 and (NHC) 2 Ag 2 (PF 6 ) 2 through two pyrazolyl nitrogens and the carbene carbon to form a metallomacrocycle, in which a head (carbene)– to tail (nitrogen) coordination mode to two silver atoms is observed. Preliminary catalytic tests show that these newly synthesized Ag–NHC complexes exhibit excellent catalytic activity at a low catalyst loading (0.1–1 mol%) in the aldehyde–amine–alkyne coupling reaction.

Abstract:This report describes the synthesis and characterization of a family of unsymmetrical NCN pincer Ni(II) complexes 2-8 with NHC-triazole arms. All of these complexes have been fully characterized by X-ray single crystal analysis, NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. Complexes 2 and 4-6 were square planar with a chloride trans to the carbene carbon atoms. Complex 3 was a paramagnetic octahedral complex with its central metal surrounded by two NCN pincer ligands. Complexes 7 and 8 contain [(NHC)(2)Ni-2-OH] moieties bearing a OH bridge. Both the [(NHC)(2)Ni-2-OH] complexes 7 and 8 and [(NCNHCN)Ni-Cl] complexes 2 and 4-6 were synthesized similarly via the reactions of the in situ formed Ag-NHCs from the corresponding imidazolium salts with [NiCl2(PPh3)(2)]. The catalytic activities of all complexes for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling were examined. Under the optimized conditions, complex 4 was active in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions of aryl iodides and aryl bromides at 110 degrees C. Aryl chlorides were successfully coupled in the presence of triphenylphosphine as an additive.

Cu-NHC complexes are of low cost and low toxicity which are easily available via various synthetic routes. Their structural diversity and ease of structural modification offer excellent opportunities for their versatile applications in the fields of catalysis, medicine, and materials. This review summarizes the synthetic routes to Cu-NHC complexes, structural features, carbene transfer reactivities and their applications in synthesis of other metal-NHC complexes, as well as their applications in catalysis.

Abstract:High-oxidation-state 3d metal species have found a wide range of applications in modern synthetic chemistry and materials science. They are also implicated as key reactive species in biological reactions. These applications have thus prompted explorations of their formation, structure, and properties. While the traditional wisdom regarding these species was gained mainly from complexes supported by nitrogen- and oxygen-donor ligands, recent studies with N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), which are widely used for the preparation of low-oxidation-state transition metal complexes in organometallic chemistry, have led to the preparation of a large variety of isolable high-oxidation-state 3d metal complexes with NHC ligation. Since the first report in this area in the 1990s, isolable complexes of this type have been reported for titanium(IV), vanadium(IV,V), chromium(IV,V), manganese(IV,V), iron(III,IV,V), cobalt(III,IV,V), nickel(IV), and copper(II). With the aim of providing an overview of this intriguing field, this Review summarizes our current understanding of the synthetic methods, structure and spectroscopic features, reactivity, and catalytic applications of high-oxidation-state 3d metal NHC complexes of titanium to copper. In addition to this progress, factors affecting the stability and reactivity of high-oxidation-state 3d metal NHC species are also presented, as well as perspectives on future efforts.

Abstract:Heteroarene-linked bis(N-heterocyclic carbenes) constitute an important family of ligands in transition metal chemistry and homogeneous catalysis. These ligands are used as multidentate ligands for the construction of mononuclear and multinuclear complexes that show unique physical properties and that are efficient catalysts for many organic transformations. A number of transition metal complexes of heteroarene-linked bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) ligands have been synthesized and structurally characterized in recent decades. In this review, we summarize the recent developments in metal complexes supported by heteroarene-linked bis(N-heterocyclic carbene) ligands and their applications. The ligands and their complexes are categorized by the linkers between the two NHCs, such as pyridine, bipyridine, phenanthroline, naphthyridine, pyrazole, thiophene, and pyridazine.

Abstract:Sandwich compound-based planar chiral N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands having a bulky η5-cyclopentadienyl-cobalt-η4-tetraphenylcyclobutadiene core were developed, and their donor strengths were evaluated by determining the Tolman electronic parameter (TEP) of the Rh dicarbonyl complex. The TEP was high at 2048 cm-1, as expected for an NHC ligand. The utility of the carbenes as chiral ligands was examined in the Rh-catalyzed asymmetric ring-opening reaction of oxabenzonorbornadienes with benzylamine, and the corresponding products were obtained with moderate enantioselectivities (up to 66% ee).

Abstract:HL center dot(PF6) (L = 2,4-dimethyl-8-phenyl[1,2,4]triazolo[4,3-a][1,8]naphthyridin-9-ylidene) was synthesized from the nucleophilic reaction of 7-chloro-2,4-dimethyl-1,8-naphthyridine with phenylhydrazine and subsequent acidification, anion exchange, and condensation with triethyl orthoformate. Its silver, copper, cobalt, and nickel complexes [Ag-2(L)(2)(CH3CN)(2)](PF6)(2) (1), [CuL(CH3CN)(2)](PF6) (2), [CuL(phen)](PF6) (3), [CuL(dppe)](PF6) (4), [Co(L)(2)(CH3CN)(2)](PF6)(2) (5), and [Ni(L)(3)](PF6)(2) (6) have been synthesized and fully characterized by NMR, elemental analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The copper complex 2 exhibits excellent catalytic activity in the Cu(I)-catalyzed azide alkyne cycloaddition reaction of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidinyl-1-oxytethered alkynes in an air atmosphere at 50 degrees C.

Abstract:In the past two decades, NHCs (NHC = N-heterocyclic carbenes) have emerged as one of the most important classes of ligands in transition metal catalysis. Although historically 5-membered carbenes, such as imidazol-2-ylidenes, have been the dominant class of NHC ligands in transition metal catalysis, recently, ring expanded carbenes on 6-, 7-, 8-, 9- and 10-membered ring systems have been shown to provide significant advantages in numerous catalytic reactions embracing various metals, transformations and mechanisms. In this comprehensive review, we provide a survey of the applications of ring-expanded N-heterocyclic carbenes (reNHCs) in transition metal catalysis. Spanning from the initial reports on ring-expanded NHCs through June 2023, the review centers on the types of ring-expanded NHCs, their organometallic complexes and applications in catalytic processes. By delving into the impact of ring-expanded NHC ligands, the review aims to provide the reader with an understanding of the significance of this ligand class and its pivotal role in transition metal catalysis and organometallic chemistry.
