Abstract:Constructing suitable defects in lattice is of great significance for developing new elastic mechanoluminescent materials. Here, a series of novel mechanoluminescent phosphors Na2Mg1-xGeO4:xMn(2+) (0 <= x <= 0.025) were synthesized by a high-temperature solid-state reaction method in an ambient atmosphere. The defects in the crystal lattice and the mechanism of photoluminescence and mechanoluminescence were clarified through Rietveld refinement, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, electron spin resonance and thermoluminescence spectra. The intrinsic oxygen vacancy defects form a deeper trap level, which plays an important role in the photoluminescence of the host. The relatively shallow extrinsic cation substitution defect Mn-Mg is mainly responsible for the mechanoluminescence of doped samples. This study not only highlights the importance of defects to optical properties, but also broadens our insight into the development of novel functional materials by defect control.

Abstract:Mechanoluminescent materials have shown great application potential in the fields of stress detection, anti-counterfeiting, and optical storage; however, its development is hindered by the unclear mechanism. Different from the mainstream exploration of new mechanoluminescent materials in non-centrosymmetric structures, a centrosymmetric mechanoluminescent material Li2ZnGeO4:Mn2+ is synthesized by a standard high-temperature solid-state reaction in an ambient atmosphere. Combined with the Rietveld refinement, photoluminescence, electron spin resonance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, it is proved that the increase in oxygen vacancies is accompanied by the self-reduction process from Mn4+ to Mn2+, and the mechanism of mechanoluminescence is clarified through the afterglow and thermoluminescence spectra. The carriers trapped by the shallow traps participate in the mechanoluminescence process through the tunneling effect, while the carriers trapped by the deep traps take part in the mechanoluminescence process via conduction band or tunneling. A signature anti-counterfeiting application is designed using the new mechanoluminescent material Li2ZnGeO4:0.004Mn2+. Utilizing the afterglow characteristics of Li2ZnGeO4:xMn2+ phosphors, we designed an intelligent long-persistent luminescence quick response code (QR-code) and visualized information encoding/decoding model, which provides a fast, simple, and effective method for information encryption, transformation, and dynamic anti-counterfeiting. This study not only analyzes the self-reduction and mechanoluminescence processes in detail but also breaks the limitation of crystal symmetry and provides a new strategy for the exploration of novel mechanoluminescent materials.

Abstract:Elastic mechanoluminescent materials, which are easily affected by inner defects, have attracted extensive attention due to their excellent performance in various detection and display fields. However, definitive experimental and theoretical evidence of the defect types in these materials is scarce. In this study, a series of KCa(PO3)(3):Mn2+ mechanoluminescent materials are studied using X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermoluminescence, and first-principles calculations. The defect types and the mechanisms of the mechanoluminescent materials are clarified. The interstitial oxygen atoms formed during the self-reduction of Mn4+ to Mn2+ are crucial for forming the trap levels and inducing mechanoluminescence. Cation substitution of Mg2+ for Ca2+ in the flexible structure of KCa(PO3)(3) promotes the luminescence properties by minimizing the Helmholtz free energy and deepening the position of the defect level. This study highlights the importance of defects in the material properties and provides new insight for selecting research systems to develop novel optical functional materials.

Abstract:A novel elastic mechanoluminescence (EML) material Zn2(Ge0.9Si0.1)O4:Mn is reported to exhibit weak persistent luminescence (PL), a dynamic compressive load in the 300–2800 N range, and a nearly perfect linear response. The PL and EML spectra indicate that the EML and PL emissions originate from the 4T1 → 6A1 transition of Mn2+. The thermoluminescence properties reveal the existence of three types of traps. The shallowest trap responsible for a fast decay afterglow may contribute little to the EML. On the other hand, the other two, deeper, trap types, underlie EML.

Abstract:ZnGa2O4:Mn, as a distinct long persistent luminescence (PL) phosphor with green emission, has attracted intensive interest for display devices and security applications. We have systemically investigated the role of intrinsic defects in the PL of pristine and Mn doped ZnGa2O4 by first-principles calculations. It is found that the self-activated PL is attributed to the electron traps induced by VO and hole traps by VZn and ZnGa. The doped Mn will be energetically favored at the tetrahedral sites rather than octahedral sites under an Mn-rich condition. In contrast, the site preference of Mn largely depends on the chemical potentials of Zn and Ga under Mn-poor condition. The existence of the antisite defect ZnGa, however, promotes the stability of Mn at octahedral sites significantly, forming corresponding defect complexes. The crystal field strength is significantly enhanced, while the spin splitting is reduced on Mn in the defect complex, which introduces additional near-infrared luminescence of PL as confirmed by our experiment.

Abstract:Mechanoluminescent (ML) materials have shown promising prospects for various applications, e.g in stress sensing, information anti-counterfeiting and bio stress imaging fields. However, the development of the trap-controlled ML materials is still limited, because the trap formation mechanism is not always clear. Inspired by defect-induced Mn4+ → Mn2+ self-reduction process in suitable host crystal structure, a cation vacancy model is creatively proposed to figure out the potential ML mechanism. Combined with the theoretical prediction and experimental results, both the self-reduction process and ML mechanism are clarified in detail, where the contribution of cation vacancy defects (V′′ Mg) dominates the luminescent properties. Electrons/holes are mainly captured by the anionic/cationic vacancies, followed by the combination of electrons and holes to transfer energy to the Mn2+ 3d states under mechanical stimuli. Based on the multi-mode luminescence features excited by X-ray, 980 nm laser and 254 nm UV lamp, together with the excellent persistent luminescence (PersL) and ML, a potential application in advanced anti-counterfeiting is demonstrated. These results will deepen the understandings of defect-controlled ML mechanism, and inspire more defect-engineering strategies to develop more high-performance ML phosphors for practical application.

Abstract:We report an experimental study on intrinsic defects in pure and rare-earths doped lithium-magnesium phosphate LiMgPO4. A wide range of optical methods were used in the work, including photoluminescence, thermoluminescence, radioluminescence and optical absorption. A detailed investigation made it possible to conclude that the main type of intrinsic defects responsible for all kinds of luminescence in LiMgPO4 is neutral oxygen vacancy (VO 0), i.e., a vacancy with two trapped electrons. Lithium magnesium phosphate has been shown to be a thermoluminescent (TL) material. The TL response of LiMgPO4 is significantly enhanced by doping with praseodymium, cerium or europium. At the same time, the spectra of LiMgPO4: RE (RE - Ce, Pr, Yb) do not contain the lines associated with f-f transitions in RE3+ but are completely identical to the TL spectrum of the phosphate host. The energy transfer from RE to the host is suggested as an explanation for the observed effect.

Abstract:Exploring mechanoluminescence (ML) materials having multi-stimulus-responsive luminescence is conducive to promoting the development of ML field applications. However, integrating the multi-stimulus-responsive luminescence into a single material is challenging, especially when concerning the unclear multi-stimulus-responsive luminescence mechanisms. Herein, we successfully synthesized a Mn2+-activated broadband multi-stimulus-responsive ML material in a non-centrosymmetric piezoelectric host (LiGaO2: Mn2+). Utilizing the defects’ homology characteristic between ML and persistent/photo-stimulated luminescence, it is confirmed that one can manage the distribution and depth of defects to determine the internal relationship between the multi-stimulus-responsive luminescence and defects. Meanwhile, the V••o and V'Li defects and distribution play a dominant role in multi-mode luminescence. The dynamic process of multi-stimulus-responsive luminescence that charge carriers trapped in deep defects are supplemented to shallow defects can be proved by experimental and DFT calculation results. Based on the excellent multi-stimulus-responsive luminescence performance, the proof-of-concept multi-mode application prospects are demonstrated. This work will deepen our understandings of the multi-stimulus-responsive luminescence mechanism via regulating the distribution and composition of defects to further promote research on flexible X-ray detectors and anti-counterfeiting fields.
Tailoring Bandgap and Trap Distribution Via Si or Ge Substitution for Sn to Improve Mechanoluminescence in Sr3Sn2O7:Sm3+ Layered Perovskite Oxide

Abstract:Two new compounds, Sr3(Sn2-xSix)O7:Sm3+ and Sr3(Sn2-xGex)O7:Sm3+, were synthesized by a solid-state reaction method and their structure, optical bandgap, trap distribution and related phosphorescence and mechanoluminescence (ML) properties were investigated. The results showed that a solid solution with a layered perovskite structure was formed and the ML was increased by introducing Si or Ge. For typical compositions of Sr2.994Sm0.004(Sn1·9Si0.1)O7 and Sr2.994Sm0.004(Sn1.75Ge0.25)O7, the ML intensities were are about 1.40–1.47 and 2.45–2.60 times than that of Sr2.994Sm0.004Sn2O7, respectively, and the threshold of the compression load above which the linearity of the ML curves changed greatly. The absorption spectra, phosphorescence decay curves, and thermoluminescence showed that adjusting the optical bandgap and trap distribution may improve the ML properties. A moderate reduction of the bandgap increased the electron trapping during the UV pre-excitation, whereas broadening the energy gap hampered electron detrapping. Increasing the trap density increased the quantity of trapped electrons or holes. Our result implies that adjusting the optical bandgap and trap distribution may be a new route for developing high-intensity mechanoluminescent materials.
First-principles study of intrinsic vacancy defects in Sr2MgSi2O7 phosphorescent host material

Abstract:Electronic structures of intrinsic vacancy defects in Sr2MgSi2O7 phosphorescent host material are investigated using first-principles calculations. Si vacancies are too high in energy to play any role in the persistent luminescence of Sr2MgSi2O7 phosphor. Mg vacancies form easier than Sr vacancies as a result of strain relief. Among all the vacancies, O1 vacancies stand out as a likely candidate because they are the most favorable in energy and introduce an empty triply degenerate state just below the CBM and a fully-occupied singlet state at similar to 1 eV above the VBM, constituting in this case effective hole trap level and electron trap levels, respectively. Mg vacancies are unlikely to explain the persistent luminescence because of its too shallow electron trap level but they may compensate the hole trap associated with O1 vacancies. We yield consistent evidence for the defect physics of these vacancy defects on the basis of the equilibrium properties of Sr2MgSi2O7, total-energy calculations, and electronic structures. The persistent luminescence mechanism of Sr2MgSi2O7:Eu2+, Dy3+ phosphor is also discussed based on our results for O1 vacancies trap center. Our results provide a guide to more refined experiments to control intrinsic traps, whereby probing synthetic strategies toward new improved phosphors.

Abstract:A variety of uniform and well-dispersed one-dimensional Zn2GeO4:Mn2+ phosphors have been synthesized via a facile solvothermal process with H2O/EG as solvent. During the synthesis process, the component of solvent and the addition of PEG surfactant play an important role in determining the structure, particle size, and morphology of the final product. Under ultraviolet light excitation, the pure Zn2GeO4 sample shows bluish-white emission which is attributed to the native defects present in the Zn2GeO4 host. When Zn2+ ions are partially substituted by Mn2+, the as-synthesized Zn2GeO4:Mn2+ samples exhibit intense green emission that corresponds to the d-d transition (4T1→6A1) of Mn2+ ions. The luminescence mechanisms of the Zn2GeO4:Mn2+ samples were investigated in detail by using the CASTEP code based on density functional theory (DFT). It is expected that the as-synthesized Zn2GeO4:Mn2+ phosphors can be potentially applied in lighting, optical displays, and optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:A multi‐stimulus‐responsive mechanoluminescence material is reported in a Mn2+ activated double‐perovskite type compound (CaZnGe2O6: Mn2+). The occupation information for Mn2+ ions in the lattice sites and corresponding dynamic luminescence processes are confirmed. Mechanoluminescence and persistent luminescence mechanisms are explored from the defects' aspect; VO•• , VZn′′ , and VCa′′ (vacancy of O, Zn and Ca ions) are believed to dominate in such processes. Finally, potential applications in anti‐counterfeiting, temperature sensing, and X‐ray imagining are demonstrated. Multi‐mode mechanoluminescence (ML) materials are have applications such as anti‐counterfeiting, stress sensing, and information security. There is limited general consensuses on the luminescent mechanisms, even though exploring ML mechanism based on defects has shown significance in further studies exploring both ML materials design and application. Here, a deep‐red to near‐infrared (NIR) ML material is reported in a Mn2+‐activated double perovskite‐type compound (CaZnGe2O6: Mn2+). The abundant lattice sites within the crystal structure have enabled Mn2+ doping and defects. Two different photoluminescence (PL) emission bands peaked at 536 and 676 nm from 4T1(4G)→6A1(6S) are observed, which are attributed to the substitution of Zn2+ and Ca2+ sites by Mn2+, respectively. Hence, tunable emissions from green to red are realized in single Mn2+ doping, which can be further regulated by varying the Mn2+ concentration. Electrons and holes are captured by cation and anion defects (VZn′′ and VCa′′ , VO•• , vacancy of Zn, Ca and O ions), followed by the combination of such carriers to transfer energy to the Mn2+ 3d states to produce ML/persistent luminescence (PersL) under mechanical/thermal stimuli. Proof‐of‐concept applications in multi‐mode anti‐counterfeiting, temperature sensing, and X‐ray imaging fields are demonstrated. Abstract:Self-reduction behavior of doped activators and zero-thermal-quenching luminescence have received much more attention in the exploration of luminescent materials for phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes. Here, a combination of the two properties is demonstrated in a Mn2+ activated red phosphor, NaZn(PO3)3:Mn2+, synthesized by a high temperature solid state reaction in ambient atmosphere, which is free from thermal quenching until 250 °C. By combined first-principles calculation and experimental investigation, the self-reduction mechanism from Mn4+ to Mn2+ and the anti-thermal quenching are clarified. The unique properties originate from the cation vacancy defects and the thermally induced energy transfer from the defect energy levels to the Mn2+ 3d excited state centers. This result will deepen the understanding of the effect of the crystal defect on luminescent materials, as well as inspiring more exploration on defect control to develop novel high thermal stability phosphors for practical application.

Abstract:Developing deep-red to near infrared (NIR) materials with multi-mode luminescence is challenging, which has promising utilization in various applications such as stress sensing and dynamic signature anti-counterfeiting. Different to the mainstream non-centrosymmetric mechanoluminescence (ML), a centrosymmetric perovskite compound (MgGeO3: Mn2+) ML material is reported. Deep-red to NIR light (600-800 nm) from Mn2+ ion is confirmed, which is attributed to the strong crystal field within the [MgO6] polyhedron. The stiffness tetrahedral units and large defect accommodating space within the host are favorable for both ML and persistent luminescence (PersL). Mn2+ ion is the only luminescent center, which is confirmed by spectral characterizations. Based on diffuse reflectance spectra, thermoluminescence analysis and density functional theory calculations, the inherent relationship between PersL, ML and PL is further clarified in detail. Due to the formation of MnMg defects, shallow trap significantly become shallower after adding Mn2+ ions. This study reports a Mn2+-doped deep-red to NIR ML phosphor, and further describes the PersL and ML mechanisms via defect engineering regulation. In general, this study may also open up a new approach for the development of efficient NIR ML materials, and show various potential applications such as in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption fields.

Abstract:Cation doped Zn2GeO4 materials have been intensively explored owing to their excellent performance in photocatalysts, optoelectronic devices and white light-emitting diodes. However, the luminescence process and thermal quenching arising during the optical excitation of these materials are yet to be clarified. The pure and 2% Mn2+ doped Zn2GeO4 phosphors were prepared via the high temperature solid state reaction. The phosphors were characterized by X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and afterglow decay curves. The thermal stability and quenching of Mn2+ luminescence were explained by the temperature dependence of photoluminescence spectroscopy and the configuration coordinate diagram. The thermal quenching of Mn2+ luminescence is mainly due to the delocalization of excited electrons from the excited state to the ionized state. Two kinds of origination of the O 1s peak were revealed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. A model is constructed to interpret all the photoluminescence and long persistent luminescence of the Mn2+ doped Zn2GeO4. This may contribute to the understanding and optimization of luminescence properties for other Mn2+ doped inorganic phosphors.

Abstract:Self-reduction behavior of doped activators and zero-thermal-quenching luminescence have received much more attention in the exploration of luminescent materials for phosphor-converted white light-emitting diodes. Here, a combination of the two properties is demonstrated in a Mn2+ activated red phosphor, NaZn(PO3)(3):Mn2+, synthesized by a high temperature solid state reaction in ambient atmosphere, which is free from thermal quenching until 250 degrees C. By combined first-principles calculation and experimental investigation, the self-reduction mechanism from Mn4+ to Mn2+ and the anti-thermal quenching are clarified. The unique properties originate from the cation vacancy defects and the thermally induced energy transfer from the defect energy levels to the Mn2+ 3d excited state centers. This result will deepen the understanding of the effect of the crystal defect on luminescent materials, as well as inspiring more exploration on defect control to develop novel high thermal stability phosphors for practical application.
Enhancing the mechanoluminescence of traditional ZnS:Mn phosphors via Li+ Co-doping

Abstract:Mechanoluminescent materials that could convert mechanical energy into light energy have attracted increasing attention in recent years for their wide potential applications in stress sensing and imaging, structural damage monitoring, wearable illuminating devices, self-powered display, mechanical energy collection and conversion. However, their relatively low mechanoluminescence intensity greatly hinders the practical application. Here, we present a simple and effective strategy to enhance the mechanoluminescence performance of ZnS:Mn phosphor by Li ion co-doping. ZnS:Mn,Li phosphors of the hexagonal wurtzite structure have been prepared via high temperature solid phase sintering. The PL and ML intensity have been enhanced by 338% and 610% for samples obtained when 4 and 5 at. % Li is introduced in the precursor materials, respectively, in comparison with those without Li dopant. The photoluminescence lifetime of ZnS:Mn,Li decreases gradually, indicating the enhanced non-radiative energy transfer as the Li concentration increases. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy is carried out to investigate the changing tendency of the sulfur vacancy of samples with various Li-doping concentration. The mechanism for mechanoluminescence enhancement is supposed to be correlated with the increased sulfur vacancies by Li co-doping, which may facilitates the non-radiative energy transfer and thereby improve the luminescence properties of the samples. These findings provide a feasible strategy to enhance the mechanoluminescence performance of traditional ZnS derived phosphors, and may contribute to developing novel mechanoluminescence materials for practical applications.
