Abstract:Extensive application of graphene-based nanomaterials will inevitably lead their release into soil. However, the retention and migration of graphene in natural soils are still unknown, due to the limitation on quantification methods. In this study, a carbon-14 isotope labeling technique was applied to systematically investigate the immobilization, transportation and transformation of C-14-labeled few-layer graphene (FLG) in two typical soils (red soil and black soil) with specifically different compositions. The adsorption capacity of red soil for FLG was 10.2 times higher than that of black soil at the same initial FLG concentration. Ferric oxides were identified as the predominant component governing the retention of FLG in soils through electrostatic attraction, leading to a significant difference on the adsorption performance between the two soils. Meanwhile, in the presence of naturally generated H2O2, ferric oxides were spontaneously employed as a catalyst to trigger a heterogeneous Fenton reaction to degrade FLG into the gas phase as CO2, indicating an important pathway for the discharging of FLG from soil. Thus, this study clearly indicates the competitive roles of ferric oxides in restricting the mobility or facilitating the transformative release of graphene in natural soils, providing new insights into the environmental fate of carbon nanomaterials in real soil.
Degradation of 14C-Labeled Few Layer Graphene Via Fenton Reaction: Reaction Rates, Characterization of Reaction Products, and Potential Ecological Effects

Abstract:Graphene has attracted considerable commercial interest due to its numerous potential applications. It is inevitable that graphene will be released into the environment during the production and usage of graphene-enabled consumer products, but the potential transformations of graphene in the environment are not well understood. In this study, C-14-labeled few layer graphene (FLG) enabled quantitative measurements of FLG degradation rates induced by the iron/hydrogen peroxide induced Fenton reaction. Quantification of (CO2)-C-14 production from C-14-labeled FLG revealed significant degradation of FLG after 3 days with high H2O2 (200 mmol L-1) and iron (100 mu mol L-1) concentrations but substantially lower rates under environmentally relevant conditions (0.2-20 mmol L-1 H2O2 and 4 mu mol L-1 Fe3+). Importantly, the carbon-14 labeling technique allowed for quantification of the FLG degradation rate at concentrations nearly four orders of magnitude lower than those typically used in other studies. These measurements revealed substantially faster degradation rates at lower FLG concentrations and thus studies with higher FLG concentrations may underestimate the degradation rates. Analysis of structural changes to FLG using multiple orthogonal methods revealed significant FLG oxidation and multiple reaction byproducts. Lastly, assessment of accumulation of the degraded FLG and intermediates using aquatic organism Daphnia magna revealed substantially decreased body burdens, which implied that the changes to FLG caused by the Fenton reaction may dramatically impact its potential ecological effects. Kupffer Cells Degrade 14C-Labeled Few-Layer Graphene to 14CO2 in Liver Through Erythrophagocytosis

Abstract:The distribution and clearance of graphene materials as drug delivery systems at organ and suborgan levels over the long term remain unclear. Here we compared the fate of 14C-labeled few-layer graphene with different lateral sizes in mice after one intravenous injection for up to 1 year and demonstrated that few-layer graphene mainly accumulated in the liver, and larger graphene can be degraded into 14CO2 by Kupffer cells. The mechanism involves the uptake of graphene by liver cells, larger graphene-induced membrane perturbation of red blood cells, and enhanced erythrophagocytosis by the Kupffer cells, resulting in the degradation of hemoglobin into hemes and a rise in iron concentrations in cells. The increased iron triggered a Fenton reaction to generate the hydroxyl radical, facilitating the degradation of larger graphene into 14CO2. Our findings propose a mechanism for the transformation of graphene that significantly contributes to our understanding of the hepatic fate of graphene in vivo.
Transformation of 14c‐labeled Graphene to 14CO2 in the Shoots of a Rice Plant

Abstract:This study focused on using carbon-14-labeled few-layer graphene (FLG) to determine its uptake, distribution, transformation, and depuration in rice plants. After 7 d hydroponic exposure to FLG suspension at 250 μg L-1 , roots accumulated 694.8 mg kg-1 graphene and shoots had 53.7 mg kg-1 graphene from intra-plant translocation. FLG could likely pass through the cell wall and membrane and enter the chloroplast in the shoots. After 14 days of depuration, only about 15 % of the accumulated FLG were eliminated into the depuration solution with about 70 % of graphene retained in the plants. About 9 % of the accumulated FLG was degraded to 14 CO2 and proposed that reaction with OH. in the leaves may likely contribute to the degradation of FLG, which had structural defects. These findings have an important impact on the long-term environmental fate of graphene-related materials in soil-plant systems.

Abstract:While graphene has substantial commercial promise, numerous aspects regarding its ecological effects such as its potential for bioaccumulation are not well known. 14C-labeled few layer graphene (FLG) was dispersed in artificial freshwater and uptake of FLG by Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri, an oligochaete, was assessed. After exposure for 36 h to a 1 mg/L FLG suspension, the FLG body burden in the organism was nearly 60 ng/mg (on a dry mass basis). Multiple characterization results confirmed that the proteins secreted by the organisms during the exposure period coated the FLG, thus increasing its stability and decreasing its size in suspension. Uptake behaviors of Eisenia foetida exposed to FLG and protein-coated FLG at concentrations of approximately 1 mg/kg or to Daphnia magna at 100 μg/L were also quantified. Protein-coated FLG demonstrated different bioaccumulation behaviors for both organisms compared to uncoated FLG, with the FLG body burden in E. foetida increased but that in D. magna reduced. The data provide the first evidence that the proteins secreted by Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri after exposure to FLG can coat FLG, thus increasing the aqueous stability of FLG, decreasing its size, and changing its bioaccumulation potential.
Colloidal Properties and Stability of Aqueous Suspensions of Few-Layer Graphene: Importance of Graphene Concentration

Abstract:Understanding the colloidal stability of graphene is essential for predicting its transport and ecological risks in aquatic environments. We investigated the agglomeration of C-14-labeled few-layer graphene (FLG) at concentrations spanning nearly four orders of magnitude (2 mu g/L to 10 mg/L) using dynamic light scattering and sedimentation measurements. FLG agglomerates formed rapidly in deionized water at concentrations >3 mg/L. From 1 mg/L to 3 mg/L, salt-induced agglomeration was decreased with dilution of FLG suspensions; the critical coagulation concentration of the more concentrated suspension (3 mg/L) was significantly lower than the dilute suspension (1 mg/L) in the presence of NaCl (1.6 mmol/L and 10 mmol/L, respectively). In contrast, FLG underwent slow agglomeration and settling at concentrations <= 0.1 mg/L in NaCl solutions and ambient waters with low ionic strength (<10 mmol/L). FLG nanoparticles with smaller lateral sizes (25 nm-75 nm) were shown to agglomerate more slowly than larger FLG, and these small FLG particles exhibited greater bioaccumulation in zebrafish embryo and stronger chorion penetration ability than larger FLG particles. These findings suggest that FLG at more environmentally relevant concentration is relatively stable and may have implications for exposure of small FLG to ecological receptors. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The influence of iron (oxyhydr)oxides on the transformation and migration of arsenic(As) has garnered significant attention. Previous work has largely focused on the transformation of iron oxides related to As fate at molecular and mechanistic levels. However, studies examining the interplay between As concentration and iron oxides transformation within complex soil system are sparse. This study investigates the transformation of iron oxides in soils with varying As concentration during microbial dissimilatory iron reduction (DIR), employing humic acid (HA) as electron shuttle and assesses the impact on As speciation transformation. Comparative analyses indicate that in soils with high As concentration (>1000 mg/kg), the secondary transformation of iron (oxyhydr)oxides to other forms, such as the conversion of ferrihydrite to goethite and lepidocrocite , or schwertmannite to goethite, is impeded. Consequently, the formation of goethite and lepidocrocite, which would typically re-stabilize As, is inhibited, leading to elevated release of As(III). On the other hand, an increase in magnetite formation in soils with low As concentration (<100 mg/kg) appears to re-stabilize As effectively. Furthermore, the formation of new secondary iron (oxyhydr)oxides in soils with As concentration <200 mg/kg enhances fraction F5, which subsequently contributes to the re-immobilization of As, sequestering it within the soil matrix. This process results in a lower release of As(III) from soils with As concentration below 200 mg/kg. These findings enhance the understanding of the interdependent relationship between the transformation of iron oxides and the fate of As in complex soil systems.

Abstract:Deposition of graphene on environmental surfaces will dictate its transport and risks. In this work, the deposition, mobilization, and transport of 14C-labeled few-layer graphene (FLG) in saturated quartz sand were systematically examined. Increasing solution ionic strength (IS) (1–100 mmol/L NaCl) resulted in greater retention of FLG (33–89%) in the sand and more hyper-exponential distribution of FLG along the sand column. Only a small fraction (≤7.4%) of the retained FLG was remobilized due to perturbation of IS by deionized water. These results indicate that trapping in pore spaces (i.e., physical straining) plays a dominant role in FLG deposition rather than attachment onto the surfaces of the sand. When IS, FLG input concentration, and flow velocity favor particle-particle interaction over particle-collector interaction, concurrent agglomeration within the pores promotes straining. In addition, electrostatic and steric repulsion that derived from the adsorbed organic macromolecules on FLG effectively reduced agglomeration and thereby enhanced transport and release of FLG. Moreover, the recovery of FLG (that deposited at 100 mmol/L NaCl) in the effluent reached 33% after speeding up the deionized water flushing rate. These findings highlight the need for FLG management in view of variations in transport behavior when assessing water quality and associated risks.

Abstract:The dynamic interactions among iron (Fe) oxides and organic matter (OM) play vital roles in controlling the geochemical cycling of carbon (C) and toxic trace metals. Although the effects of OM on the Fe oxides transformation, and dynamic with toxic trace metals have been studied previously, it is still poor to understand the mechanistic and quantitative on the C sequestration during the Fe(III) mineralization process, and kinetics with hydrated Cu(II) in the acid drainage. In this study, Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and density functional theory (DFT) were used to elucidate the underlying mechanism for the fine structure of iron minerals, fulvic acid (FA) sequestration and hydrated Cu(II) coordination on Fe oxides. FA dosages played an essential role in the formation of Fe oxides, which can inhibit the formation of Fe-O octahedrons and benefit to the Fe-O tetrahedron. FA molecules were mainly sequestrated on the surfaces of Fe oxides and van der Waals forces were the main interaction between FA and Fe oxides. The hydrated Cu(II) oxides mainly distributed on the surface of iron oxides as divalent oxidation states, and feasible coordinated with phenolic hydroxyl group of FA and Fe oxides. The knowledge of the dynamic coupling between Fe oxide transformation under the effect of FA and the fate of hydrated Cu(II) on Fe oxides provided the basis for predicting the geochemical process of Fe, C and toxic trace metals.

Abstract:Abiotic transformation of graphene oxide (GO) in aquatic environments can markedly affect the fate, transport, and effects of GO. The authors observed that ferrous iron (Fe[II])an environmentally abundant, mild reductantcan significantly affect the physicochemical properties of GO (examined by treating aqueous GO suspensions with Fe2+ at room temperature, with doses of 0.032mM Fe(2+)permg/L, 0.08mM Fe(2+)permg/L, and 0.32mM Fe(2+)permg/L GO). Microscopy data showed stacking of GO nanosheets on Fe2+ treatment. Spectroscopy evidence (X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared transmission, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) showed significant changes in GO surface O-functionalities, in terms of loss of epoxy and carbonyl groups but increase of carboxyl group. The reduction mechanisms were verified by treating model organic molecules (styrene oxide, p-benzoquinone, and benzoic acid) resembling O-containing fragments of GO macromolecules with Fe2+. With sedimentation and adsorption experiments (using bisphenol A as a model contaminant), the authors demonstrated that Fe2+ reduced GOs still maintained relatively high colloidal stability, whereas their adsorption affinities were significantly enhanced. Thus, reduction of GO by mild reductants might be of greater environmental concerns than by stronger reducing agents (e.g., N2H4 and S2-), because the latter can result in too significant losses of surface O-functionalities and colloidal stability of GO. Abstract:Numerous studies have emphasized the toxicity of graphene-based nanomaterials to algae, however, the fundamental behavior and processes of graphene in biological hosts, including its transportation, metabolization, and bioavailability, are still not well understood. As photosynthetic organisms, algae are key contributors to carbon fixation and may play an important role in the fate of graphene. This study investigated the biological fate of 14C-labeled few-layer graphene (14C-FLG) in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (C. reinhardtii). The results showed that 14C-FLG was taken up by C. reinhardtii and then translocated into its chloroplast. Metabolomic analysis revealed that 14C-FLG altered the metabolic profiles (including sugar metabolism, fatty acid, and tricarboxylic acid cycle) of C. reinhardtii, which promoted the photosynthesis of C. reinhardtii and then enhanced their growth. More importantly, the internalized 14C-FLG was metabolized into 14CO2, which was then used to participate in the metabolic processes required for life. Approximately 61.63%, 25.31%, and 13.06% of the total radioactivity (from 14CO2) was detected in carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins of algae, respectively. Overall, these results reveal the role of algae in the fate of graphene and highlight the potential of available graphene in bringing biological effects to algae, which helps to better assess the environmental risks of graphene.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination caused by industrial discharge is a challenging environmental issue. Herein, an efficient adsorbent based on few-layered magnetic graphene oxide (FLMGO) was fabricated, characterized, and utilized to remove aqueous Cd(II) and Cu(II). Results present that the two components graphene oxide (GO) and Fe3O4 of FLMGO promote mutually, enabling FLMGO to outperform either GO or Fe3O4. Specifically, FLMGO adsorbs Cd(II) and Cu(II) with adsorption quantities of 401.14 and 1114.22 mg·g–1 in 5 and 7 min, respectively. Moreover, FLMGO can be readily recovered via magnetic separation using a hand-held magnet. Adsorptions are spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy increasing, which are the best described by the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order model. The interaction mechanism is as follows: lone pair electrons in C═O- and C–O-related groups were coordinated toward Cd(II) and Cu(II) to induce chemical interaction. The high adsorption efficiency endows FLMGO with encouraging application potential in heavy metal remediation.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Cd and Pb immobilisation with iron oxide/lignin composite and the bacterial community response in soil

Abstract:Iron oxide is a natural mineral that generally exists in the form of iron oxide-organic complexes (Fe-OM) in soil. Lignin is a naturally occurring polymer that is considered to be an important part of soil carbon cycling. In this study we prepared a composite material (MGE) with iron oxide and lignin based on the Fe-OM present in the soil. MGE was then applied to remediate Cd and Pb in contaminated soil. The results show that DTPA-Cd and DTPA-Pb levels were reduced by 58.87% and 78.09%, respectively. The bacterial community diversity index decreased in the iron oxide (GE) group, but a slight increase was observed in the MGE group. In terms of species composition in the MGE group, the abundance of Proteobacteria, Gemmatimonadota and Acidobacteriota increased, while the abundance of Bacteroidota, Actinobacteriota and Firmicutes decreased. The outcome in the GE group was the opposite. In the MGE group, HCl-Fe2+, HCl-Fe3+, and pH were significantly higher than in the other groups, indicating that MGE stimulated the growth of iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB) and promoted iron redox reactions. Iron oxide could be reduced to Fe2+ due to the activity of FeRB, and then Fe2+ would be oxidised and hydrolysed, which led to an increase in soil pH. Secondary minerals were formed during this process. With the oxidation of Fe2+ and the formation of secondary minerals, Cd and Pb could be stabilised in the oxides and were not easily released through a co-precipitation mechanism.

Contrasting Effects of Inorganic and Organic Fertilisation Regimes on Shifts in Fe Redox Bacterial Communities in Red Soils

Abstract:Although the precipitation and dissolution of iron (Fe)-containing-minerals are driven by microbially-mediated iron-redox cycling, we still have a limited understanding of complex response of such microbial communities to fertilisation. Here, using chemical and synchrotron-based spectral analyses, we show that the distribution of poorly crystalline Fe minerals and crystalline Fe minerals is different in organically- and inorganically-fertilised soils, and that compared to no fertilisation (Control), Fe redox cycling bacteria were present at higher abundance and diversity in organically-fertilised soils but lower in inorganically-fertilised soil. During Fe(III) reduction, Geobacter were important active Fe(III) reducers, with a higher relative abundance in both organically- and inorganically-fertilised soils than in Control, and their higher abundance was responsible for greater dissolution of ferrihydrite in inorganically-fertilised soil than in organically-fertilised soil. However, during the Fe(II) oxidation, Pseudomonas and Anaerolinea were more abundant, and produced higher levels of poorly crystalline Fe oxides under organic fertilisation. Thus, for the first time, we demonstrate that inorganic and organic fertilisation regimes have contrasting effects on the Fe redox bacterial communities, which then influence Fe cycling in soils.
Influence of fulvic acid sub-fractions on aggregation kinetics of graphene oxide in aqueous environments

Abstract:Fulvic acid (FA) can affect the dispersion of graphene oxide (GO) in aquatic environments, however, the possible mechanisms remain unclear. Dynamic light scattering techniques combined with a multiple regression model were applied to explore the influence of FA sub-fractions (FApH3 - FApH13) on the aggregation kinetics of GO in aqueous environments. The ratios of critical coagulation concentration (CCC) values were CCCNa: CCCMg: CCCLa: CCCCe = 1:2-5.15:3-7.31:3-7.35, which were consistent with the Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek (DLVO) theory and Schulze-Hardy rules. The GO remained stable at pH 3-10 and aggregated at pH < 3 or pH > 10, and its critical coagulation pH values were 1.44 and 12.25 with 10 mM NaCl as background. The CCC values of GO in the presence of FApH3 - FApH13 were greater than those in the absence of FA sub-fractions. The ratios of CCC values of GO (r) increased in the presence of FA sub-fractions in the order of FApH13 > FApH9 > FApH7 > FApH5 > FApH3 and ranged from 1.01 to 2.15 for certain metal ions including Na+, Mg2+, La3+, and Ce3+. The CCC values of GO were significantly related to C, H, O, N, S, H/C, O/C, carboxylic C, and carbonyl C of FA sub-fractions (P < 0.05), respectively, and could be predicted using the multiple linear regression eq. CCC = Z-n (98.959- 60.911 ∗ O/C + 4.799 ∗ O-alkyl C - 0.845 ∗ aromatic C - 6.237 ∗ carbonyl C). The predicted CCC values for GO were within 90 % prediction intervals, and the average error of the CCC values was 3.3 % and R2 = 0.986. This investigation is expected to provide a scientific basis for the transport and ecotoxicity of GO in environments.

The rates and pathways of iron mineral transformation processes have been studied intensely in model systems such as mixed suspensions, but transformation in complex heterogeneous porous media is not well understood. Here, mesh bags containing 0.5 g of ferrihydrite were incubated in five water-saturated paddy soils with contrasting microbial iron-reduction potential for up to twelve weeks. Using X-ray diffraction analysis, we show near-complete transformation of the ferrihydrite to lepidocrocite and goethite within six weeks in the soil with the highest iron(II) release, and slower transformation with higher ratios of goethite to lepidocrocite in soils with lower iron(II) release. In the least reduced soil, no mineral transformations were observed. In soils where ferrihydrite transformation occurred, the transformation rate was one to three orders of magnitude slower than transformation in comparable mixed-suspension studies. To interpret the spatial distribution of ferrihydrite and its transformation products, we developed a novel application of confocal micro-Raman spectroscopy in which we identified and mapped minerals on selected cross sections of mesh bag contents. After two weeks of flooded incubation, ferrihydrite was still abundant in the core of some mesh bags, and as a rim at the mineral-soil interface. The reacted outer core contained unevenly mixed ferrihydrite, goethite and lepidocrocite on the micrometre scale. The slower rate of transformation and uneven distribution of product minerals highlight the influence of biogeochemically complex matrices and diffusion processes on the transformation of minerals, and the importance of studying iron mineral transformation in environmental media.

Abstract:In natural environments, the iron oxide transformation is associated with natural organic matter (NOM) and heavy metals. However, there is still a lack of knowledge on the dynamic interactions among NOM, iron oxides, and heavy metals during the iron oxide transformation process, which has significant implications on the fate of metals and carbon (C) in the environment. In this study, two types of NOM, fulvic acid and humic acid (FA and HA) were used to elucidate the influence of NOM on the iron oxide transformation and the dynamic distribution and speciation of Cu and C during the iron oxide transformation. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy showed that both FA and HA decreased the rates of ferrihydrite transformation to hematite. The EXAFS analysis of Cu speciation and spherical aberration corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (Cs-STEM) showed that Cu could be incorporated into the hematite particles while HA and FA hindered the incorporation of Cu, consistent with the chemical extraction results. Compared with FA, HA resulted in more extractable Cu by diluted acid and less Cu incorporation into iron oxides. The Cs-STEM results showed that both HA and FA resulted in the formation of ellipsoidal hematite particles with a loose structure. Batch extraction experiments and the Cs-STEM imaging, collectively, indicated that HA might penetrate into the loose and porous structure of hematite nanoparticles, which was less evident for FA. Results in this study help to understand the environmental behaviors of C and Cu during the iron oxide transformation process and also shed light on the nanoscale mechanisms of C sequestration within iron oxides.
Effects of Fullerol and Graphene Oxide on the Phase Transformation of Two-Line Ferrihydrite

Abstract:Two-line ferrihydrite (Fh) is an omnipresent iron oxyhydroxide nanomineral with high surface reactivity and weak crystallinity, and its phase transformation in nature has drawn significant concerns. A number of studies have investigated the effects of coexisting natural substances (e.g., ions, organic molecules, and clay minerals) on the phase transformation processes of Fh. This work, for the first time, studied the effects of coexisting carbon nanomaterials (CNM) on the phase transformation of Fh, and CNM with different morphologies, that is, graphene oxide (GO) and fullerol (PHF), were applied. Characterization results from X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and Mossbauer spectroscopy showed that the transformed products of Fh are mainly hematite (Hem) with a small amount of goethite (Gth) in the absence/presence of CNM; however, the transformation kinetics, morphologies, and Hem/Gth ratio of the transformed products are distinctly different in each system. In particular, GO decreased the transformation rate of Fh (compared with the Fh system), whereas PHF not only accelerated the transformation rate but also favored the formation of larger Hem particles and higher Hem/Gth ratios in the transformed products. We hypothesized that these results could be attributed to the different behaviors of CNM in affecting the aggregation of Fh as the transformation of Fh into Hem is a solid phase transformation process (via dehydration), which strongly relies on the aggregation of Fh particles. In this term, the samples of CNM-Fh mixtures before transformation were characterized. The results obtained from atomic force microscopy and sedimentation experiments showed that the large lamellar GO could act as a dispersing agent and inhibit the aggregation and contact of Fh particles while the nanogranular PHF functioned as a "bridge" and enhanced the aggregation of Fh particles. This study revealed that the coexisting nanoparticles (e.g., PHF and GO) could exert different influences on the transformation of Fh by influencing its aggregation and dispersion.

Abstract:Fulvic acid (FA) and iron oxides often play regulating roles in the geochemical behavior and ecological risk of arsenic (As) in terrestrial ecosystems. FA can act as electron shuttles to facilitate the reductive dissolution of As-bearing iron (hydr)oxides. However, the influence of FA from different sources on the sequential conversion of Fe/As in As-bearing iron oxides under biotic and abiotic conditions remains unclear. In this work, we exposed prepared As-bearing iron oxides to FAs derived from lignite (FAL) and plant peat (FAP) under anaerobic conditions, tracked the fate of Fe and As in the aqueous phase, and investigated the reduction transformation of Fe(III)/As(V) with or without the presence of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1. The results showed that the reduction efficiency of Fe(III)/As(V) was increased by MR-1, through its metabolic activity and using FAs as electron shuttles. The reduction of Fe(III)/As(V) was closely associated with goethite being more conducive to Fe/As reduction compared to hematite. It is determined that functional groups such as hydroxy, carboxy, aromatic, aldehyde, ketone and aliphatic groups are the primary electron donors. Their reductive capacities rank in the following sequence: hydroxy> carboxy, aromatic, aldehyde, ketone> aliphatic group. Notably, our findings suggest that in the biotic reduction, Fe significantly reduction precedes As reduction, thereby influencing the latter's reduction process across all incubation systems. This work provides empirical support for understanding iron's role in modulating the geochemical cycling of As and is of significant importance for assessing the release risk of arsenic in natural environments.

Abstract:Preferential enrichment of arsenic in iron oxides relative to manganese oxides has been well documented. In this study, however, a distinct arsenic enrichment is revealed in natural ferromanganese duricrusts, which are commonly found in natural weathering profiles of manganese-bearing carbonate rocks. In the studied ferromanganese duricrust covering Carboniferous carbonates at Qixia Mountain in eastern China, stromotalite-like structures composed by hematite, goethite, pyrolusite and hetaerolite have been observed. Electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) mapping and synchrotron-based microscanning X-ray fluorescence (m-XRF) analyses reveal that the arsenic content in manganese oxides is elevated with respect to iron oxide phases. For example, the arsenic content of pyrolusite is approximately 5 times as much as that of hematite or hetaerolite. However, the highest arsenic content (0.58 wt % As2O5) occurs in 2.75 (+/- 0.96, +/-sigma) mm micro-bands of hematite ((FexMn1-xIII)(2)O-3, 0.75 < x < 0.83). Although arsenic contents in the Mn-rich hematite micro-bands are extraordinarily high, the amount of hematite with a high Mn content is very low in the duricrust. Hence manganese oxides are suggested to be the major arsenic sink in the ferromanganese duricrust. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectra (EXAFS) further shows that all arsenic is present as oxidized As(V) and are bound to Fe/Mn oxides in bidentate binuclear bridging complexes with As-Fe and As-Mn bond distances of 3.24 angstrom and 3.23 angstrom, respectively. In addition, it is found that zinc is also more enriched in Mn oxides (besides hetaerolite) than in Fe oxides. The fine hematite crust with low contents of heavy metals could act as a protective seal to separate Mn oxides core with high Zn and As from environmental fluids. This separation could reduce the interaction between them and decrease the release of Zn and As from this ferromanganese duricrusts, which ensures long-term sequestration of heavy metals. The unique structural and mineralogical constraints on the distribution of heavy metals can provide insights into novel strategies for environmental remediation of heavy metals contaminations.
