Metamaterials
Abstract:In recent years, artificial structures (metamaterials) have made promising advances for many practical purposes, especially in the rapid growth of telecommunication devices. The association of perfectly matched impedance and strong resonance phenomena has allowed the incoming electromagnetic wave of devices to completely fit inside an object that has an electrical size far smaller than that of traditional absorbers. Unfortunately, in the radio band, most recent low-frequency metamaterial perfect absorbers (MMPAs) are still too thick, large and expensive to be easily integrated in real devices. Hence, many effective solutions have been proposed for creating MMPA structures with small unit cells. Even the conventional MMPAs have been shrunk quickly to several hundred times thinner than their working wavelengths. However, it is still a big obstacle to let the devices work in reality at long wavelengths. In this chapter, we introduce briefly the operational progress of MMPAs in the low-frequency regime. Furthermore, we give an overview of prospective challenges and tendencies for the future development of the next generation of conventional low-frequency MMPAs.
