Abstract:Optical phased arrays (OPAs) are essential optical elements in applications that require the ability to manipulate the light-wavefront, such as beam focusing and light steering. To miniaturize the optical components, active metasurfaces, especially graphene metasurfaces, are used as competent alternatives. However, the metasurface cannot achieve strong resonance effect and phase control function in the mid-infrared region only relying on a single-layer graphene. Here we present a graphene-metal hybrid metasurface that can generate a specific phase or a continuous sweep in the range of a 275°-based single-layer graphene structure. A key feature of our design is that the phase adjustment mainly depends on the combination mechanism of resonance intensity and frequency modulation. An all-solid-state, electrically tunable, and reflective OPA is designed by applying the bias voltage to a different pixel metasurface. The simulation results show that the maximum deflection angle of the OPA can reach 42.716°, and the angular resolution can reach 0.62°. This design can be widely applied to mid-infrared imaging, optical sensing, and optical communication systems.

Abstract:Weak graphene plasmon is a key challenge for graphene-based metasurfaces in the visible and near-infrared regions. In this study, we have numerically designed and demonstrated a tunable, ultrathin, hybrid dual-band quarter-wave plate metasurface, which comprises of graphene, metal, and glass. Tunable birefringence has been obtained through the number of layers of graphene, its Fermi energy, metal dimensions, and the periodicity. The design also achieves a 95% polarization conversion ratio from a linear state to a circular state with a near unity value of ellipticity at a design wavelength in the near-infrared. The ultrathin thickness of the structure, 0.1$\lambda $, and an embedding glass makes the structure compact and easily integrable for photonic-sensing application in the near-infrared.

Abstract:Active metasurfaces have recently emerged as compact, lightweight, and efficient platforms for dynamic control of electromagnetic fields and optical responses. However, the complexities associated with their post-fabrication tunability significantly hinder their widespread applications, especially for the mid-infrared range due to material scarcity and design intricacy. Here, we experimentally demonstrate highly dynamic, pixelated modulations of coherent mid-infrared emission based on an electrically programmable plasmonic metasurface integrated with graphene field effect transistors (Gr-FETs). The ultrabroad infrared transparency of graphene allows for free-form control over plasmonic meta-atoms, thus achieving coherent mid-infrared states across a broad range of wavelengths and polarizations. The spatial temperature modulation generated by Gr-FETs is effectively synergized with the emissivity control by the localized surface plasmon polaritons from gold nanoantennas. This integrated temperature-emissivity modulation of metasurfaces is systematically extended to form a pixelated 2D array, envisioning new approaches toward scalable 2D electrical wiring for densely packed, independently controlled pixels.

Abstract:In this article, we theoretically study the optical properties of graphene metasurfaces consisting of layered graphene ribbons and their potential applications as multifunctional optical devices in the long-wavelength infrared region. By engineering the plasmonic resonance in graphene ribbons with different widths, the phase of reflected light can be tuned over a range of nearly 2π, while the reflectivity is kept relatively high at the target frequencies. Owing to the weak light–graphene interaction in the off-resonance region, independent control of the reflected light can be achieved by stacking multiple layers of graphene ribbons. Since the interlayer coupling between the ribbons is negligible, we have developed a transmission-line-based uncoupled model as a physical interpretation of the stacked metasurface. Abstract:Metasurfaces offer significant potential to control far-field light propagation through the engineering of amplitude, polarization, and phase at an interface. We report here phase modulation of an electronically reconfigurable metasurface and demonstrate its utility for mid-infrared beam steering. Using a gate-tunable graphene-gold resonator geometry, we demonstrate highly tunable reflected phase at multiple wavelengths and show up to 237° phase modulation range at an operating wavelength of 8.50 {\mu}m. We observe a smooth monotonic modulation of phase with applied voltage from 0° to 206° at a wavelength of 8.70 {\mu}m. Based on these experimental data, we demonstrate with antenna array calculations an average beam steering efficiency of 50% for reflected light for angles up to 30°, relative to an ideal metasurface, confirming the suitability of this geometry for reconfigurable mid-infrared beam steering devices.

Abstract:Surface plasmon can be produced in graphene in the mid-infrared and terahertz waveband regimes, and the regulation for surface plasmon can be achieved by a reasonable design. On the basis of above, a resonant tunable structure was designed. By depositing single layers of graphene ribbons with different widths on a dielectric substrate, discontinuities in nanoscale were introduced, thereby effectively controlling the interaction of graphene with light. The spectral and electromagnetic field distributions of the structure were theoretically studied using the finite difference time domain method. The results showed that when the designed structure was coupled with the incident light, there would be multiple resonance enhanced absorption peaks. By changing the number, width and distance of the graphene ribbons in each period, the number, position, intensity of the resonance peak can be controlled. In addition, the Fermi energy level of graphene can be changed by applying different bias voltages, so the position and intensity of resonance peak can be adjusted dynamically. Therefore, with this structure graphene plasmon resonance can be regulated over a wide spectral range. This study provides a theoretical basis for the design of the graphene-based sensors, filters and absorbers in infrared regime.

Abstract:Plasmonic metasurfaces represent a promising platform for enhancing light-matter interaction. Active control of the optical response of metasurfaces is desirable for applications such as beam-steering, modulators and switches, biochemical sensors, and compact optoelectronic devices. Here we use a plasmonic metasurface with two Fano resonances to enhance the interaction of infrared light with electrically controllable single layer graphene. It is experimentally shown that the narrow spectral width of these resonances, combined with strong light/graphene coupling, enables reflectivity modulation by nearly an order of magnitude leading to a modulation depth as large as 90%. . Numerical simulations demonstrate the possibility of strong active modulation of the phase of the reflected light while keeping the reflectivity nearly constant, thereby paving the way to tunable infrared lensing and beam steering

Abstract:We designed and simulated freestanding dielectric optical metasurfaces based on arrays of etched nanoholes in a silicon membrane. We showed $2\pi$ phase control and high forward transmission at mid-infrared wavelengths by tuning the dimensions of the holes. We also identified the mechanisms responsible for high forward scattering efficiency and showed that these conditions are connected with the well-known Kerker conditions already proposed for isolated scatterers. A beam deflector was designed and optimized through sequential particle swarm and gradient descent optimization to maximize transmission efficiency and reduce unwanted grating orders. Such freestanding silicon nanohole array metasurfaces are promising for the realization of silicon based mid-infrared optical elements.

Abstract:Plasmonic metasurfaces are able to modify the wavefront by altering the light intensity, phase and polarization state. Active plasmonic metasurfaces would allow dynamic modulation of the wavefront which give rise to interesting application such as beam-steering, holograms and tunable waveplates. Graphene is an interesting material with dynamic property which can be controlled by electrical gating at an ultra-fast speed. We use a graphene-integrated metasurface to induce a tunable phase change to the wavefront. The metasurface supports a Fano resonance which produces high-quality resonances around 7.7 microns. The phase change is measured using a Michleson interferometry setup. It is shown that the reflection phase can change up to 55 degrees. In particular the phase can change by 28 degrees while the amplitude is nearly constant. The anisotropic optical response of the metasurface is used to modulate the ellipticity of the reflected wave in response to an incident field at 45 degree. We show a proof of concept application of our system in potentially ultra-fast laser interferometry with sub-micron accuracy.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for the miniaturization and flexibility of optical devices, graphene-based metasurfaces have emerged as a promising ideal design platform for realizing planar and tunable electromagnetic or optical devices. In this paper, we propose a tunable metasurface with low-dispersion phase gradient characteristics that is composed of an array of double-layer graphene ribbons sandwiched with a thin insulating layer and a polymer substrate layer with a gold ground plane. As two typical proof-of-concept examples, metasurfaces act as a planar prism and a planar lens, respectively, and the corresponding performances of tunable broadband dispersion are demonstrated through full-wave simulation experiments. By changing the Fermi level of each graphene ribbon individually to introduce abrupt phase shifts along the metasurface, the broadband continuous dispersion effect of abnormal reflection and beam focusing is achieved within a terahertz (THz) frequency region from 3.0 THz to 4.0 THz, and the dispersion results can be freely regulated by reconfiguring the sequence of Fermi levels via the bias voltage. The presented graphene metasurface provides an avenue for the dispersion manipulation of a broadband terahertz wave and may have great prospects in the fields of optics, imaging, and wireless communication.

Abstract:We propose a type of ultra-thin metasurfaces composed of rectangular graphene patches supporting orthogonal plasmonic resonances, which can work in transmission or reflection modes for dynamic terahertz wavefront manipulation with high polarization conversion ratio. By controlling the response of each patch via electrical biasing, the phase of the output wave can be tuned in a wide range over 180° while keeping its amplitude high and relatively stable. We demonstrate several functional devices based on such metasurfaces: a linear polarization converter with nearly 100% polarization conversion ratio, a switchable anomalous wave deflection device, and a dual-polarity focusing mirror with the focal spot tunable in both the transversal and longitudinal directions.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a spectrally and spatially tunable terahertz metasurface lens based on the surface plasmons of graphene ribbons. By tuning the graphene Fermi energy, the optical property of graphene surface plasmons can be dynamically modulated, leading to tailored abrupt phase shifts of the reflected light. We demonstrate a resulting large spectral tuning range from 4 to 6 THz for the proposed metasurface lens with a spatially adjustable focal point in tens of micrometers. The influence of electron relaxation time of graphene and thickness of ion-gel on the performance of the metasurface lens is also discussed. Such a terahertz metasurface lens with a large spectral and spatial tunability is expected to show the great potentials in realizing active terahertz elements.

However, the integration and practical application of the device are hindered by lack of tunability and insufficient sensitivity. In this context, a compact metasurface nanophotonic sensor consisting of graphene nanoribbon arrays is proposed and verified numerically by using a series of gate-tunable sharp localized surface plasmon resonances, which shows ultrasensitive imaging-based molecular fingerprints detection in mid-infrared region. The graphene metasurface is excited by p-polarized light at an oblique angle and supports extremely confined surface plasmons matching nanoscale samples. Especially, the absorption signals of target molecules are significantly enhanced under the oblique incidence of light, and the absorption signatures of even 1% A/G-IgG protein bilayer physisorption can be observed in the absorbance signals calculated from light intensity spectra. Moreover, the imaging-based detection of ultra-sharp absorption signature, such as polyethylene molecule, is also achieved by the graphene/silicon grating hybrid structure with sharper surface plasmon resonances. The gate-tunable and extremely confined graphene plasmons will provide sensitive and integrated mid-infrared spectroscopy devices.

Abstract:Graphene as a one-atom-thick platform for infrared metamaterial plays an important role in optical science and engineering. Here we study the unique properties of some plasmonic waveguides based on graphene nano-ribbon. It is found that a graphene ribbon of finite width leads to the occurrence of coupled edge mode. The single-mode region of a single freestanding graphene ribbon is identified at a fixed frequency of 30 THz. A low-loss waveguide structure, consisting of a graphene layer, a silica buffer layer and silicon substrate is proposed to reduce the propagation loss and obtain a high figure of merit for future integration of waveguide devices. Furthermore, two coupled ribbon configurations, namely, side-side coupling and top-bottom coupling, are investigated. As a device example, a nano-ring cavity of ultra-small size is designed.

Abstract:Metasurfaces can extend the optical properties of conventional materials by structuring surfaces at a subwavelength scale. These artificial subwavelength surfaces mimic the physics of conventional materials and can, in principle, be designed to provide novel optical material properties. Metal-insulator-metal (MIM) antenna metasurfaces are among the most widely used as ideal absorbers and emitters. In this work, we present MIM metasurfaces in the mid-infrared that comply in the electric and magnetic forms of Babinet's, Lorentz's, and Kirchhoff's principles. To verify the validity of Babinet's, Lorentz's, and Kirchhoff's MIM metasurfaces, we computed their reflection and absorption spectra as well as electric and magnetic field maps. We found that even in the presence of graphene on top of the electric and magnetic MIM metasurfaces, these principles still hold qualitatively. However, the excitation of gap surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and graphene SPPs fails to comply quantitatively. Additionally, we fabricated the MIM metasurfaces and used imaging Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in the mid infrared spectrum to validate them. Finally, we explore the potentials and limits of the use of graphene as tunability material, with a tunability bandwidth up to 0.6 μm. Our findings can be applied to the development of electric and magnetic frequency selectivity metasurfaces, polarizers, coherent thermal sources, and detectors.

Abstract:The rise of terahertz (THz)-based technologies has prompted intense interest in methods for manipulating the properties of THz radiation. In this Letter, we experimentally demonstrate a graphene micro-ribbon-based metasurface that allows us to tailor and dynamically tune the transmission and polarization rotation spectra of impinging THz pulses. This is achieved by controlling the geometry of the ribbon pattern and the applied DC magnetic field, both of which strongly influence the magnetoplasmonic response of the metasurface. The properties of the metasurface can be accurately modeled using an effective medium approach that considers the capacitive interaction of the ribbons resulting from the THz electric field. Our results highlight the promise of graphene-based THz devices that leverage the strongly enhanced light–matter interactions resulting from patterning.

Abstract:Metasurfaces, two-dimensional metamaterials consisting of engineered structures, have recently emerged as an exciting “flat” platform to manipulate electromagnetic waves in a prescribed manner. The tunability and reconfigurability are urgently needed for of metasurfaces in order to perform distinctive functionalities and miniaturize the device footprint. In this talk, I will first discuss tunable metasurfaces based on graphene nanoribbons for infrared beam steering. It is shown that the phase of the infrared light reflected from a simple graphene ribbon metasurface can span over almost the entire 2π range by changing the width of the graphene ribbons, while the amplitude of the reflection can be maintained at high values without significant variations. We successfully realize anomalous reflection, reflective focusing lenses, and non-diffracting Airy beams based on graphene metasurfaces, which are readily tunable by changing the Fermi energy of graphene. In the second part of my talk, I will discuss origami-based, dual-band chiral metasurfaces at microwave frequencies. The flexibility by folding the metasurface provides another degree of freedom for geometry control in the third dimension, which induces strong chirality from the initial, 2D achiral structure. The experimental results are in good agreement with numerical simulations and analyses. These findings open up a new paradigm of lightweight, multifunctional, and tunable devices for adaptive control over electromagnetic waves.
Small-Angle Ultra-Narrowband Tunable Mid-Infrared Absorber Composing from Graphene and Dielectric Metamaterials

Abstract:We report a small-angle ultra-narrowband mid-infrared tunable absorber that uses graphene and dielectric metamaterials. The absorption bandwidth of the absorber at the graphene Fermi level of 0.2 eV is 0.055 nm, and the absorption peaks can be tuned from 5.14803 to 5.1411 μm by changing the graphene Fermi level. Furthermore, the resonance absorption only occurs in the angle range of several degrees. The simulation field distributions show the magnetic resonance and Fabry–Pérot resonance at the resonance absorption peak. The one-dimensional photonic crystals (1DPCs) in this absorber act as a Bragg mirror to efficiently reflect the incidence light. The simulation results also show that the bandwidth can be further narrowed by increasing the resonance cavity length. As a tunable mid-infrared thermal source, this absorber can possess both high temporal coherence and near-collimated angle characteristics, thus providing it with potential applications.

Abstract:Plasmonic chirality has drawn a lot of attention owing to its strong and tunable circular dichroism (CD) effects and its desirable applications in bio-sensing, chiral molecules analysis, etc. In this work, the CD response in the mid-infrared region of a metamaterial consisting of Z-shaped metal array and graphene ribbons has been studied theoretically. Benefiting from symmetry breaking and electromagnetic coupling effect, the strong CD signal is generated by the metamaterial and the maximum CD value could reach 22%, which is much larger than that of reported graphene-based chiral systems. In particular, the intensity and peak position of the CD response could be dynamically controlled by the Fermi level in a large range.
