Abstract:In this paper, the effect of in-situ reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation by zero-valent iron (ZVI) on lignocellulose degradation was investigated, with adding 20 g/kg ZVI as test group. The results showed that ZVI can obviously improve the performance of thermophilic phase. Specifically, H2O2 concentration increased by 97.9%, and the degradation rates of lignin, cellulose and hemicellulose in ZVI group were increased by 3.42%, 6.33% and 3.6%, respectively. In the succession of microbial community structure, the Actinobacteria abundance increased by 11.17% in ZVI group. Furthermore, metagenomics analysis revealed that ZVI increased the abundance of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes), especially the abundance of auxiliary activities (AAs) increased by 27.9%. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that ROS were a critical factor in improving the composting lignocellulose degradation. These results firstly shed lights into characterization and function of in-situ generation ROS in composting niche to control depolymerization of lignocellulose.
