Abstract:We experimentally and numerically demonstrate the dispersion-managed soliton generated in an Er-doped fiber laser mode-locked by nonlinear polarization evolution (NPE). A 367-fs ultrashort pulse with spectral width of 18 nm is obtained.

Transmissive dual channels are provided by birefringence filtering effect. The dual-wavelength mode-locking centers at 1539.1 and 1578.8 nm with the repetition-rate difference of 430 Hz. Furthermore, coexistence of the soliton and the bound state is also observed.

Abstract:We report the observation of various multi-pulse dispersion-managed (DM) solitons in a passively mode-locked Erbium-doped fiber laser at near zero net cavity group velocity dispersion. The generated DM solitons are characterized by the Gaussian-like spectral profile with no sidebands. Bound states of multi-pulse DM solitons are also observed.

Abstract:Period-doubling of dispersion-managed solitons in an Erbium-doped fiber ring laser operating at the near zero net cavity group velocity dispersion region was experimentally observed. The generated dispersion-managed solitons of the laser are characterized by their near Gaussian spectral profiles and no sidebands. Numerical simulations verified our experimental observations and showed that the period-doubling could occur both in the positive and negative near zero net cavity group velocity dispersion regions, which suggests that the occurrence of the period-doubling is an intrinsic feature of the mode-locking fiber lasers and independent of the concrete mode-locked pulse profile.

Abstract:We investigate an all-fiber all-polarization-maintaining dispersion-managed ultrafast fiber laser mode-locked by nonlinear polarization evolution in polarization-maintaining fibers both numerically and experimentally. We find that the laser can operate in different regions among a wide net dispersion, including dispersion-managed solitons, dispersion-managed dissipative solitons, bound state solitons and noise-like pulses. The laser generates the dispersion-managed soliton pulses with a maximum 3 dB bandwidth of 37.84 nm, which can be further compressed to 161.37 fs. Moreover, pulses generation simulation under different net dispersion condition has been carried out. Nonlinear pulse evolution dynamics in laser cavity has been analyzed through numerical simulation as well. The results are basically consistent with the experimental ones. Abstract:We have demonstrated the direct generation of 4.6-nJ 78.9-fs ultrashort pulses with 58 kW peak power in an all-fiber net-normal-dispersion oscillator. Such high peak power is a record in an all-fiber oscillator and is comparable to chirped-pulse amplification systems. The corresponding spectrum has steep spectral edges, which is the typical shape of dissipative solitons (DS). Also, we find that the spectral width is tunable from 40 to 58 nm by adjusting polarization controllers, and the pulse duration can be tuned from 1.7 ps to 120 fs through increasing the pump power, which is attractive to applications. Besides, we demonstrate experimentally the relationship between spectral width and the pump power of DS laser for the first time.

Abstract:Single-cavity dual-comb mode-locked lasers, an emerging dual-comb technology, can generate two sets of pulse sequences with excellent mutual coherence, thus eliminating the need for complex active noise reduction systems. We report the generation of dual-wavelength dispersion-managed solitons in a near-zero anomalousdispersion Er-doped mode-locked fiber laser. Transmissive dual channels are provided by birefringence filtering effect. The dual-wavelength mode-locking centers at 1539.1 and 1578.8 nm with the repetition-rate difference of 420 Hz. Furthermore, 2-hour spectral stability is measured in an open environment, and we analyze the intracavity dynamics that influences the long-term stability of the dual-wavelength mode-locked laser operating in the free-running state.

Abstract:We report on the generation of 281.2 nJ mode locked pulses directly from an erbium-doped fiber laser mode-locked with the nonlinear polarization rotation technique. We show that apart from the conventional dissipative soliton operation, an all-normal-dispersion fiber laser can also emit square-profile dissipative solitons whose energy could increase to a very large value without pulse breaking.

Abstract:We have employed a nonlinear polarization rotation technique to realize the self-starting passive mode-locking in an erbium-doped fiber laser with positive dispersion. The laser can emit high-energy dissipative solitons without wave-breaking. The pulse-shaping mechanism, which is qualitatively distinct from the conservative solitons in negative dispersion cavity, may originate from the laser gain, loss, NPR, cavity dispersion, or other fiber nonlinearity effects. To our best knowledge, it is the first report on the experimental observations for high-energy wave-breaking-free dissipative solitons forming in a fiber laser with ultra-large net-normal cavity dispersion. The spectrum of these strongly chirped pulses covers the wavelength range from 1530 to 1660 nm. The FWHM width of the spectrum can be as large as 42 nm, and the maximal total energy of a single-pulse is estimated to be similar to 34.4 nJ.

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally demonstrate the generation of broad bandwidth mode-locked dual-wavelength pulses with diverse-pattern from a dispersion managed erbium-doped (Er-doped) fiber laser. The two-peak gain profile of the Er-doped fiber is shown to have advantages in achieving broadband dual-wavelength pulses compared to a comb filter in our cavity. Our obtained bandwidths of 24 nm and 11.5 nm represent the broadest achieved in an Er-doped dual-wavelength fiber laser to date. In addition, the weak third-order dispersion (TOD) of the fibers facilitates two dispersion-pattern pulses (one stretched pulse and one dissipative soliton) generated in the near zero dispersion regime. Our results provide a convenient, effective way to obtain such sources for potential applications, such as in dual-comb metrology and multicolor pulses in nonlinear microscopy.

Abstract:We report on the observation of dispersion-managed (DM) dark soliton emission in a net-normal dispersion erbium-doped fiber laser. We found experimentally that dispersion management could not only reduce the pump threshold for the dark soliton formation in a fiber laser, but also stabilize the single dark soliton evolution in the cavity. Numerical simulations have also confirmed the DM dark soliton formation in a fiber laser.

Abstract:Physics phenomena of multipulse compounds have enriched the life of ultrashort pulses beyond traditional pulse singlets in passively mode-locked fiber lasers. By developing a near zero-dispersion fiber laser, we report on the generation of dispersion-managed soliton (DMS) molecules. During propagation in the laser cavity, the broadband DMSs experience a breathing process (i.e., periodic compression and stretch of the pulse width), which facilitates various molecule evolutions from pulse singlets. In particular, tightly bound DMS pairs, loosely bound DMS pairs and three-pulse to eleven-pulse molecules are respectively observed. Apart from the aforementioned DMS molecules with equal pulse separations, unequally spaced DMS molecules with different multipulse structures are also obtained, typically including the (2 + 1)-type molecule and the (2 + 3 + 1)-type molecule. The investigation of DMS molecules characterized by versatile multipulse structures is of both fundamental scientific interests in soliton dynamics and potential applications of ultrahigh-capacity optics communications based on advanced modulation formats.

Abstract:We demonstrate the sub-100 fs pulse generation from a dispersion-managed mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber laser at 2.8 μm. Both numerical simulation and experiment demonstrate that stretched-pulse and dissipative soliton mode lockings coexist in the near-zero-dispersion region of a fluoride fiber laser. With fine dispersion management, the shortest pulse of 95 fs was obtained from the stretched-pulse mode-locked Er:ZBLAN fiber laser, with an average power of 280 mW and repetition rate of 52 MHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the shortest pulse to date directly generated from a mid-infrared mode-locked fluoride fiber laser.

Abstract:Though normal-dispersion mode-locked fiber lasers generally work on a single-pulse regime due to the large chirp of the pulses, we observe bound states of one kind of dissipative solitons in the laser. The separation between the bounded pulses in such soliton molecules increases with the pump power, and also varies with the settings of polarization controllers, which is consistent with other kinds of bounded pulses such as solitons. Our study indicates that the bound state of pulses is an intrinsic feature of mode-locked lasers and is independent of pulse profiles, stimulated by overdriving of mode-locking mechanisms.

Abstract:An all-fiber laser of mode-locked solitons based on the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) is proposed with a simple fiber ring cavity. The net dispersion of the ring cavity is adjusted by changing lengths of the erbium-doped fiber (EDF) and single mode fibers (SMFs) in the cavity, resulting in three different dispersion regimes: anomalous dispersion, normal dispersion, and near-zero dispersion. With different intracavity dispersions, the proposed laser can deliver the conventional soliton, typical dissipation soliton (DSs). These nonlinear waves show different features, including the spectral shapes and time traces. Especially in the near-zero dispersion cavity, the DS presents the ultra-broad spectral width. The experiment results provide insight into the evolution of mode-locked solitons with the net cavity dispersion in fiber lasers.

Abstract:We report an all-fiber dissipative soliton passively mode-locked Er-doped fiber laser. By adjusting the pump power and the polarization states,we can obtain the two-soliton and three-soliton bound state dissipative solitons further. Utilizing anomalous dispersion fiber to compress the pulse duration of wide-bandwidth two-soliton bound dissipative solitons,compressed pulse width is fitted to 96 fs by hyperbolic secant, and the calculated time-bandwidth product is 0. 324, indicating the near transform-limited pulse. The broadband spectrum is obtained thanks to the dispersion management in the cavity and high modulation depth (20%) of carbon nanotube(CNT) saturable absorber. On this basis,the dissipative soliton with the spectral width of 35 nm (center wavelength is 1. 57 mu m) is obtained, which is also the widest spectrum based on the dissipative soliton produced by CNT.

Abstract:We report an experimental observation of dark pulse generation in a dispersion-managed erbium-doped fiber laser with net anomalous cavity group-velocity dispersion. It is found that apart from the bright soliton pulses, dark pulses with spectral sidebands could be obtained in the laser under appropriate operating conditions. The generation of dark pulses may be attributed to soliton shaping in the cavity.

Abstract:We have experimentally demonstrated that soliton molecules can be achieved from an Er-doped fiber laser oscillator via polarization dispersion management in the anomalous dispersion regime. In the laser oscillator, selective high-birefringence (HIBI) fibers were cross-spliced twice to counteract the linear polarization dispersion, which could highlight the role of the accumulated nonlinear phase shift and thus ensure the stable generation of mode-locking pulses by means of nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR). Depending on the length of the HIBI fibers, the angle of waveplates, and the pumping power, different types of soliton, such as single-pulse soliton and soliton molecules in tightly and loosely bound state, are observed.

Abstract:We have demonstrated experimentally that few-cycle pulses can be achieved from an Er-doped fiber laser via single-stage soliton compression. Adopting negative prechirp amplification is to avoid the high-energy pulse break-up and increase the spectral width. Through optimizing the fiber length and pulse energy in different parts of the fiber laser system, the generated pulse can be as short as 22.7 fs, which is about four cycle duration at 1550 nm. The average power is up to 120mW with the corresponding pulse energy of 2.8 nJ. Numerical simulation has been carried out to illustrate the dynamic of pulse prechirp, amplification, and compression.

Abstract:Characterized by particle-like behaviors, soliton molecules comprise abundant and interesting multi-soliton dynamics and further unveil vivid pulse-interaction scenarios towards the research community of ultrafast fiber lasers. Here, we report the formation of dispersion-managed solitons (DMSs) in an all-fiber laser passively mode-locked by a 45 degrees tilted fiber grating (45 degrees TFG) near the zero-dispersion regime. Particularly, typical DMS singlets are observed, possessing a broadband and smooth spectral shape. Besides, based on the reinforced stretching-compressing process during the pulse propagation, various multi-pulse DMS molecules are also discovered. Moreover, the transient soliton dynamics of dual-pulse and triple-pulse DMS molecules covering the timescale over hundreds of round trips are illustrated based on dispersive Fourier transformation (DFT) technique. The investigation of multi-soliton compounds, caused by direct soliton interaction, probably paves access to the explorations of nonlinear dynamics in mode-locked lasers.
