Abstract:Herbal remedies have been used extensively throughout the world since ancient times. Advances in phytochemical and phyto-pharmacological science have enabled the composition elucidation and biological activities of the products of several medicinally important plants. The effectiveness of various medicinally important plant species depends on their active constituents. Many pharmacologically active constituents isolated from plants, such as tannins, flavonoids, and terpenoids are not soluble in water, and have low absorption, as they cannot cross the lipid–cell membrane, have excessive molecular size, resulting in loss of efficacy and bioavailability. However, if nano drug delivery technology is applied, it can help increase efficacy and reduce the side effects of various herbal remedies. This is the basic idea of introducing a nano approach to drug delivery in herbal medicine. Herbal medicines have long been ignored for nano formulation production owing to a lack of scientific support and processing challenges (identification, extraction, and standardization). However, modern phytopharmaceutical research can solve scientific needs (pharmacokinetics determination, mechanism of action, dose adjustment, site of action, etc.) of herbal medicines to be integrated in a nano-drug delivery system, such as liposomes, nanoparticles, microemulsions, matrix systems, etc., by reducing the side effects, dose, and improving activity. This chapter summarizes several drug delivery technologies that can be used for herbal bioactive compounds loading together with some examples.
