Abstract:Among transition-metal oxides, vanadium oxides and iron oxides have attracted much attention for electrochemical energy storage devices due to their high theoretical specific capacities and multiple variable valence states of V and Fe. However, the poor conductivity of both oxides leads to poor rate performance and high charge transfer resistance between the electrolyte and electrodes. Herein, Ti3C2Tx-wrapped V2O5/Fe2O3 (VFO) composites were designed and prepared for achieving enhanced electrochemical performance. The VFO composites on carbon cloth were synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and the optimized VFO electrode exhibited a capacitance of 435.2 mF cm(-2) at a current density of 2 mA cm(-2). By wrapping with Ti3C2Tx, the areal capacitance of the VFO composite electrode was greatly enhanced up to 1150.82 mF cm(-2) at a current density of 2 mA cm(-2). The enhanced electrochemical performance of the Ti3C2Tx@VFO composites is mainly attributed to the synergistic effects of the improved conductivity and diminished collapse and falling off of VFO during the charging and discharging processes. For practical application, asymmetrical supercapacitor (ASC) MnO2//Ti3C2Tx@VFO devices were constructed. The device exhibited a maximum energy density of 0.17 mW h cm(-2) at a power density of 1.26 mW cm(-2) with a capacitance retention of 74.92% after 5000 cycles. This work indicates the potential application of various oxides in high-performance supercapacitors by modification with MXenes.

Abstract:Combining the new two-dimensional conductive MXene with transition metal oxide to build composite structure is a promising path to improve the conductivity of metal oxide. However, a critical challenge still remains in how to achieve a good combination of MXene and metal oxide. Herein, we develop a facile hydrothermal route to synthesize the MnO2/Ti3C2Txcomposite electrode for supercapacitors by synergistically coupling MnO2nanowires with Ti3C2TxMXene nanoflakes. Compared with the pure MnO2electrode, the morphology of the MnO2/Ti3C2Txcomposite electrode changes from nanowires to nanoflowers. Moreover, the overall conductivity and electrochemical performance of the composite electrode are greatly improved due to an addition of Ti3C2TxMXene. The specific capacitance of the MnO2/Ti3C2Txcomposite electrode achieves 210.8 F·g-1at a scan rate of 2 mV·s-1, while that of the pure MnO2electrode is only 55.2 F·g-1. Furthermore, the specific capacitance of the MnO2/Ti3C2Txcomposite electrode still can remain at 97.2% even after 10 000 charge-discharge cycles, revealing an excellent cycle stability. The synthesis strategy of this work can pave the way for the research and practical application of the electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Abstract:In this work, a composite of molybdenum trioxide (MoO3) nanoparticles anchored on two-dimensional layers titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) has been successfully synthesized via a facile hydrothermal process. MoO3 was introduced to improve the contact region between electrode and electrolyte to shorten the paths of ion migration and intercalation. Ti3C2Tx has been integrated to act as a supporter to prevent the self-aggregation of MoO3 combined with the charge transport channel and high conductivity donor to the composite. The structure and morphology of the MoO3/Ti3C2Tx composite were characterized by Xray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Cyclic voltammetry tests showed that the MoO3/Ti3C2Tx (III) composite exhibited a maximum specific capacitance of 151 F g(-1) at a scan rate of 2 mV s(-1), which is higher than that of pure Ti3C2Tx (103 F g(-1)). Furthermore, the composite displays an excellent cycling stability with 93.7% specific capacitance retention after 8000 cycles at 1 A g(-1).

Abstract:In this work, Ti3C2, was obtained by selective etching of Al in Ti3AlC2 by hydrofluoric and VS2 was modified on two-dimensional Ti3C2 by solvothermal process to prepare VS2/Ti3C2 composites. In the three-electrode system, the prepared VS2/Ti3C2 composites were compared with VS2 and Ti3C2, respectively, and it was found that the electrochemical properties of VS2/Ti3C2 composites were better. The intercalated VS2 nanosheets expanded the distance between Ti3C2 sheets, leading to a wide ion-accessible surface region and fast ionic/electric transport, resulting in the improved the electrochemical performance of the Ti3C2/VS2 composites. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis shows that the prepared VS2/Ti3C2 composite material has high electrical conductivity. Under the current density of 1 A.g(-1), the specific capacity of VS2/Ti3C2 composite is 191.3 mAh.g(-1), which is much higher than that of VS2 and Ti3C2. The asymmetric supercapacitors were assembled with VS2/Ti3C2 composites as positive electrodes, and the electrochemical performance was tested when the power density was 1288 W.kg(-1) and the energy density was 24 Wh.kg(-1). The initial capacity retention is 82.2% after 5000 cycles of constant current charge and discharge at the current density of 2 A.g(-1). In short, VS2/Ti3C2 composites show excellent supercapacitor performance in terms of capacity, stability, energy density and power density. It shows that VS2/Ti3C2 is a promising electrode material for supercapacitors.

Abstract:MXenes are a kind of novel and interesting new materials, and carbon dots (CDs) are also concerned because of their processability, versatility, environmental protection, and low cost. Both MXenes and CDs are chemically stable and have a large surface area and high electrical conductivity, which are promising alternative electrode materials for supercapacitors. Moreover, MnO 2 can also improve the energy density of the electrode materials. In this paper, Ti 3 C 2 T x /CDs and Ti 3 C 2 T x /CDs@MnO 2 were prepared by a hydrothermal method and their supercapacitor performance were also investigated by a series of electrochemical methods. From the CV profile in a three-electrode system, Ti 3 C 2 T x /CDs@MnO 2 electrode exhibited a high specific capacitance of 281.3 F g −1 at a scan rate of 5 mV s −1 , which was higher than that of Ti 3 C 2 T x /CDs (160.3 F g −1 ). Ti 3 C 2 T x /CDs showed a good cycling stability with a capacitance retention of 82.38% after 10,000 cycles. Meanwhile, a symmetric supercapacitor was successfully assembled using Ti 3 C 2 T x /CDs@MnO 2 as electrodes, with an energy density of 5.77 Wh kg −1 at a corresponding power density of 120 W kg −1 . This work offers a theoretical foundation and a technological path for synthesizing highly effective ternary composite of MXene-based as energy storage materials.

Abstract:Ti3C2 is considered as a promising electrode material for supercapacitors due to its excellent electronic conductivity and chemical stability. However, the relatively low specific capacitance of Ti3C2 hinders its further development in supercapacitors. Herein, the nitrogen and oxygen co-doped C@Ti3C2 composites have been synthesized through an in-situ polymerization method under annealing atmospheres of Ar and the mixture of Ar and NH3. The concentrations of doped N and O vary with the reaction atmosphere, thus influencing the electrochemical performance of the electrode material. Due to the synergistic effect of the additional pseudocapacitance provided by the abundant O- and N- functional groups in the carbon and the excellent electronic conductivity of Ti3C2, N, O co-doped C@Ti3C2 composite with N concentration of 9.5% exhibits a specific capacitance of 250.6 F g(-1) at 1 A g(-1), remaining 94% retention after 5000 cycles. Furthermore, the N, O co-doped C@Ti3C2 composite-based symmetric supercapacitor shows an energy density as high as 10.8 Wh kg(-1) at a power density of 600 W kg(-1) with excellent cycling stability. This study demonstrates that the performance of MXene-based supercapacitors can be greatly enhanced by designing and modifying with rich pseudocapacitive materials.

Abstract:MXene-based materials are promising electrode materials for electrochemical capacitors (ECs) due to their unique two-dimensional layered structure, high surface area, remarkable chemical stability, and electrical conductivity. TiO2 nanoparticles decorated Ti3C2 MXene were synthesized through a simple in situ hydrolysis and heat-treatment process and subsequently fabricated as an electrode for ECs. The as-prepared Ti3C2, TiO2, and TiO2-Ti3C2 were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The results indicated that TiO2 nanoparticles with a diameter of less than 30 nm were decorated onto the Ti3C2 MXene nanosheets. The resulting composites exhibited significantly higher specific capacitance of 143 F g(-1) at 5 mV s(-1), which was 1.5 times that of pure Ti3C2 (93 F g(-1)). Moreover, TiO2-Ti3C2 showed excellent cycling stability, retaining 92% of its initial capacitance after 6000 cycles. Abstract:For the sake of developing new energy storage devices for satisfying the energy needs of the modern society, we herein report an innovative MXene-induced strategy to synthesize Ti3C2Tx MXenes/Ni based metal-organic framework composites (Ti3C2Tx/Ni-MOFs) for high-performance supercapacitors. The two-dimensional (2D) MXenes with oxygen-containing groups on the surface can be used as structure-directing agents to tune the Ni-MOFs into 2D microbelts. The presence of MXenes can not only improve conductivity of the composite but also provide additional electric double layer capacitance and faradaic pseudocapacitance. The 2D Ni-MOF microbelts can offer rich activity sites for the faradaic redox reactions and shorten the ion transport path. Taking advantages of synergistic effects of Ni-MOF microbelts and Ti3C2Tx MXenes, the prepared Ti3C2Tx/Ni-MOFs electrode shows a good electrochemical performance with 1124 F g−1 at the current density of 1 A g −1 and 62 % rate capability at 20 A g −1. This work can offer a new insight to design 2D MOF belts as high-performance electrode materials for supercapacitors.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) MXenes such as Ti3C2, Ti2C, Mo2C, and Mo133C have shown excellent electrochemical performances as supercapacitor electrodes, and the exploration of new and/or high-capacity MXene-based supercapacitor electrode materials is an active field. In this work, 2D multi-layered V4C3 MXene has been synthesized by selectively etching Al from V4AlC3 and it shows a high capacitance of 209 F g(-1) at 2 mV s(-1), good rate performance, and stable long cyclic performance with capacitance retention rate of 97.23% after 10000 cycles at 10 A g(-1) in 1 M H2SO4. Importantly, the pseudocapacitance (similar to 100.1 F g(-1)) accounts for about 37% of the total capacity (similar to 268.5 F g(-1)) for V4C3 MXene electrode. Therefore, the high specific capacitance of V4C3 MXene is not only due to their wide interlayer spacing (similar to 0.466 nm), large specific surface areas (similar to 31.35 m(2) g(-1)) and pore volumes (similar to 0.047 cm(3) g(-1)), and good hydrophilicity but also attributed to the abundant valence states of vanadium (+2, +3, and +4). The high rate performance and excellent cycling stability of V4C3 MXene electrodes are mainly attributed to the high electronic conductivity (1137 S m(-1) at 300 K). Abstract:MnO2 is considered as one of the most promising electrode materials for flexible supercapacitors but it often suffer in poor conductivity, which limits practical applications according to industry needs. To enhance the performance, forming MnO2-based hybrid structures with conductive materials is a promising implement approach. Ti3C2Tx MXene sheets, a new kind of 2D transition metal carbides with metallic conductivity and hydrophilic nature, are promising candidate to couple with MnO2. According to the complementary principle, we design a novel structure MnO2/Ti3C2Tx hybrid nanocomposite by synergistically coupling one-dimensional (1D) MnO2 nanoneedles with two-dimensional (2D) Ti3C2Tx MXene sheet for flexible supercapacitor. XPS investigations suggest the obvious charge transfer from Ti3C2Tx sheets to MnO2 nanoneedles, where Ti3C2Tx sheets serve as a remarkable 2D conductive substrate to facilitate the electrons transfer in the nanocomposites. This strong synergistic effect between Ti3C2Tx and MnO2 resulting from the chemical interaction greatly enhance the electrical conductivity, specific capacitance, rate stability and structural stability of the MnO2/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposite. To show the potential application in energy storage, a symmetrical flexible supercapacitor device with good electrochemical performance, high flexibility and super cycling ability is fabricated by utilizing MnO2/Ti3C2Tx nanocomposites as electrode materials. This work has proposed a new approach of developing advanced nanocomposites from a MnO2-based electrode for high performance flexible electronics.

Abstract:Electrode materials with high electrochemical activity and outstanding stability is of great significance to improve the performance of supercapacitors. A composite material comprised of core-shell FeCo2O4@FeCo2S4 nanospheres and MXene nanosheets was synthesized through solvothermal combined with self-assembly. The FeCo2O4@FeCo2S4-MXene hybrids as electrode materials exhibit a high specific capacitance of 1090.6 F g−1 at 1 A g−1. All-solid-state supercapacitor using FeCo2O4@FeCo2S4-MXene as the positive electrode possesses a high energy density of 49.8 Wh kg−1 at 800 W kg−1and great cycle life with 87.85 % retention over 20,000 cycles at 1 A g−1. The synergistic effect of FeCo2O4@FeCo2S4 and MXene is the main reason for the exceptional electrochemical performance. FeCo2O4@FeCo2S4 anchored to MXene prevents the restacking of MXene, while MXene provides a conductive network for accelerating carrier transfer and a skeleton for preventing FeCo2O4@FeCo2S4 from collapsing during long-term cycling. In view of the above excellent performance, this study provides a feasible idea for future research on high-performance supercapacitors.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a versatile method for synthesizing uniform three-dimensional (3D) metal carbides, nitrides, and carbonitrides (MXenes)/metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) composites (Ti 3 C 2 T X /Cu-BTC, Ti 3 C 2 T X /Fe,Co-PBA, Ti 3 C 2 T X /ZIF-8, and Ti 3 C 2 T X /ZIF-67) that combine the advantages of MOFs and MXenes to enhance stability and improve conductivity. Subsequently, 3D hollow Ti 3 C 2 T X /ZIF-67/CoV 2 O 6 composites with excellent electron and ion transport properties derived from Ti 3 C 2 T X /ZIF-67 were synthesized. The specific capacitance of the Ti 3 C 2 T X /ZIF-67/CoV 2 O 6 electrode was 285.5 F g -1 , which is much higher than that of the ZIF-67 and Ti 3 C 2 T X /ZIF-67 electrode. This study opens a new avenue for the design and synthesis of MXene/MOF composites and complex hollow structures with tailorable structures and compositions for various applications.
Enhancing Capacitance Performance of Ti3C2Tx MXene as Electrode Materials of Supercapacitor: From Controlled Preparation to Composite Structure Construction

Abstract:Abstract Ti 3 C 2 T x , a novel two-dimensional layer material, is widely used as electrode materials of supercapacitor due to its good metal conductivity, redox reaction active surface, and so on. However, there are many challenges to be addressed which impede Ti 3 C 2 T x obtaining the ideal specific capacitance, such as restacking, re-crushing, and oxidation of titanium. Recently, many advances have been proposed to enhance capacitance performance of Ti 3 C 2 T x . In this review, recent strategies for improving specific capacitance are summarized and compared, for example, film formation, surface modification, and composite method. Furthermore, in order to comprehend the mechanism of those efforts, this review analyzes the energy storage performance in different electrolytes and influencing factors. This review is expected to predict redouble research direction of Ti 3 C 2 T x materials in supercapacitors.

Abstract:The FeOOH has been a hotspot in the field of electrochemical research over recent years owing to its typical channel-type nanoporous structure and high theoretical specific capacitance. However, the poor electrical conductivity limits the applications in supercapacitors. In this investigation, the nanocomposites with amorphous FeOOH on Ti3C2Tx nanosheets were one-step chemically synthesized by using FeCl3 center dot 6H(2)O, NH4HCO3, and Ti3C2Tx(MXene) at room temperature. The nanocomposite samples have been characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, cyclic voltammetry (CV), galvanostatic charge-discharge (GCD), and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The results show that the capacitive performance is remarkably improved by introducing highly conductive Ti3C2Tx and being composited with amorphous FeOOH. The specific capacitance of the as-prepared nanocomposite reaches 217 F g(-1) at current density of 1 A g(-1) which is much higher than that of amorphous FeOOH. It also exhibits good rate performance and high charge-discharge cycling stability. The enhancement in electrochemical performance is mainly attributed to the open layered structure with amorphous FeOOH nanoparticles uniformly distributed on Ti3C2Tx nanosheets, which has the enlarged electrode-electrolyte interface area, the shortened diffusion path of ions, and the improved electrical conductivity provided by the conductive Ti3C2Tx frame. Abstract:Nickel-organic framework (Ni-MOF)/Ti3C2Tx (MXene) hybrid nanosheets as supercapacitor electrode materials are fabricated via a facile ultrasonic method. Ti3C2Tx nansheets are uniformly dispersed on the surface of Ni-MOF, thus enhancing the electronic conductivity and preventing the aggregation of Ni-MOF nanosheets. The as-prepared Ni-MOF/MXene hybrid nanosheets exhibit high specific capacitance of 867.3 F g−1 at 1 A g−1, and excellent rate capacity.
