Abstract:Objective:To qualify if vitamin A (VA) intake based on the recommended VA amountintakes in low-birth-weight infants (LBWIs) reached the standard. Methods:This was a retrospective study of daily VA intakes in LBWIs during hospitalization. The ratio of daily VA intakes from parenteral nutrition (PN), enteral feeding and VA supplements were evaluated and the ratios to recommended amounts were measured.Results:195 LBWIs were included. The ratio of daily VA intakes from enteral feeding and PN to recommended amounts was 14.8% and 20.6%, respectively. The ratio of daily VA intake from neither route did not reach 50% of the recommended intake in each of the first 6 weeks after birth. 178 (91.3%) patients used VA supplements during hospitalization, it was initiated on day Day 14 (11~18) after birth. The use of VA supplements effectively increased total amount of VA intakes, patients receivedup to 91.3% of the recommended amount of VA at the 6th week after birth. Conclusions:The amounts of daily VA intake from enteral feeding and PN in this study was far from enough in the preterm infants enrolled in this study. As the main source of VA, oral VA supplements was initiated not early enough.
