Abstract:Objective:To examine trends in incidence and prevalence of traumatic brain injury (TBI) from 2000 to 2019 in China. Methods:The latest TBI data estimated by the Global Burden of Disease study group was used to evaluate changes in the incidence and prevalence of TBI among the population of different genders, age groups and causes in China from 2000 to 2019, and the relative percentage changes in the incidence and prevalence of TBI between 2000 and 2019 were calculated. The chi square test was used to compare the differences in the incidence and prevalence of TBI among different genders and age groups.Results:(1) Excluding the impact of the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, the age-standardized incidence rose from 152.5 per 100 000 in 2000 to 207.8 per 100 000 in 2019 (an increase of 36.3%), with age-standardized prevalence grew from 231.3 per 100 000 in 2000 to 342.3 per 100 000 in 2019 (a growth of 48.0%). During the same period, the number of TBI cases went up to 3.310 million from 2.032 million (an increment of 62.9%), while the number of patients escalated from 2.984 million to 6.546 million (a gain of 119.4%). (2) The incidence and prevalence of TBI revealed sex and age differences, as those rates were steadily higher in males than in females and higher in adults aged 50-69 and ≥70 years than any other age groups in the years between 2000 and 2019 (all P<0.05). (3) Road injury, the most prominent external cause of TBI among Chinese, accounted for 43.2%-55.1% and 56.9%-67.1% of the total incidence and prevalence of TBI respectively. (4) Riding motorcycles, bicycles and walking were the most important travel modes for road injury-induced TBI, consisting 80.4%-82.0% and 83.1%-85.3% of TBI cases and patients. Conclusion:There is an overall trend of rapid growth in the incidence and prevalence of TBI in China from 2000 to 2019.
