Abstract:The incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and metabolic syndrome (MS) has been increasing in recent decades. There are some common clinical features between the two diseases, including increased risk of cardiovascular disease, increased incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and obesity. MS is a common comorbidities of IBD, and it can significantly increase the hospitalization rate of patients with CD, and may be associated with poor prognosis of CD patients. Latest studies have found some similarities in pathophysiological mechanisms between the two diseases as well, such as immune imbalance and chronic inflammation, adipose tissue dysfunction, and intestinal flora disorder. This article summarizes the research progress of the relationship between IBD and MS, in order to explore new drug treatment methods for IBD from MS and provide reference for gastroenterologists to pay attention to the early identification of MS patients and the related high-risk factors, and to manage IBD patients more scientifically.
