Abstract:Dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSCs) have attracted great interest as one of the most promising photovoltaic technologies, and transparent DSCs show potential applications as photovoltaic windows. However, the competition between light absorption for photocurrent generation and light transmittance for obtaining high transparency limits the performance of transparent DSCs. Here, transparent DSCs exhibiting a high light transmittance of 60.3% and high energy conversion efficiency (3.66%) are reported. The strategy is to create a cocktail system composed of ultraviolet and near‐infrared dye sensitizers that selectively and efficiently harvest light in the invisible or low‐eye‐sensitivity region while transmitting light in high‐eye‐sensitivity regions. This new design provides a reasonable approach for realizing high efficiency and transparency DSCs that have potential applications as photovoltaic windows.

Abstract:Integrating transparent solar-harvesting systems into windows can provide renewable on-site energy supply without altering building aesthetics or imposing further design constraints. Transparent photovoltaics have shown great potential, but the increased transparency comes at the expense of reduced power-conversion efficiency. Here, a new technology that overcomes this limitation by combining solar-thermal-electric conversion with a material's wavelength-selective absorption is presented. A wavelength-selective film consisting of Cs0.33WO3 and resin facilitates high visible-light transmittance (up to 88%) and outstanding ultraviolet and infrared absorbance, thereby converting absorbed light into heat without sacrificing transparency. A prototype that couples the film with thermoelectric power generation produces an extraordinary output voltage of ≈4 V within an area of 0.01 m2 exposed to sunshine. Further optimization design and experimental verification demonstrate high conversion efficiency comparable to state-of-the-art transparent photovoltaics, enriching the library of on-site energy-saving and transparent power generation.

Abstract:The narrow and intense absorption spectra of organic materials open up the opportunity to develop efficient organic photovoltaic devices that are qualitatively different from other, incumbent solar cell technologies. Their selective absorption spectra make them attractive for applications in power-generating windows that are semitransparent in the visible spectral range, yet absorb strongly in the invisible ultraviolet and infrared spectral bands, thereby providing a viable solution for the generation of clean energy. Here, we review recent progress in semitransparent organic photovoltaics for power windows and other building-applied uses, and discuss the potential strategies to endow them with a combination of high efficiency, visible transparency, neutral colour appearance, prolonged operational lifetime and low efficiency loss when scaled into modules. We also discuss the issues that need to be addressed to achieve further progress.

High-Performance Semitransparent Organic Solar Cells with Excellent Infrared Reflection and See-Through Functions.

Abstract:Clean energy production and saving play vital impacts on the sustainability of the global community. Herein, high-performance semitransparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs) with excellent features of power generation, being see-through, and infrared reflection of heat dissipation, with promising perspectives for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) are reported. To simultaneously improve average visible transmittance (AVT) and power conversion efficiency (PCE), formally in a trade-off relationship, of ST-OSCs, new ternary blends with alloy-like near-infrared (NIR) acceptors are employed, which are effective to improve device efficiency while maintaining visible absorption unchanged, resulting in PCEs of 16.8% for opaque devices and 13.1% for semitransparent OSCs (AVT of 22.4% and infrared photon radiation rejection (IRR) of 77%). Further, multifunctional ST-OSCs are realized via introducing simple, yet effective photonic reflectors, together with optical simulation, leading to not only perfect fitting of the visible transmittance peak (555 nm) to the photopic response of the human eye but also an excellent IRR of 90% (780-2500 nm), along with 23% AVT and over 12% PCE. This is thought to be the best-performing multifunctional ST-OSC with promising prospects as BIPVs in terms of power generation, heat dissipation, and being see-through.

Abstract:Semitransparent (ST) photovoltaics (PVs) with selective absorption in the UV or/and near-infrared (NIR) range(s) and reduced energy losses, are critical for high-efficiency solar-window applications. Here, a high-performance tandem ST-PV with selected absorption in the desirable regions of the solar spectrum is demonstrated. An ultralarge-bandgap perovskite film (FAPbBr(2.43)Cl(0.57), E-g approximate to 2.36 eV) is first developed to fulfil efficient selective absorption in the UV region. After optimization, the corresponding ST single junction (SJ) PV exhibits an averaged transmittance (AVT) of approximate to 68% and an efficiency of approximate to 7.5%. By sequentially reducing the visible absorbing component in a low-bandgap organic bulk-heterojunction layer, an ST-PV with selective absorption in the NIR is achieved with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.9% and a high AVT of 62%. The energy loss associated with the SJ ST-PVs is further reduced with a tandem architecture, which affords a high PCE of 10.7%, an AVT of 52.91%, and a light utilization efficiency up to 5.66%. These results represent the best balance of AVT and PCE among all ST-PVs reported so far, and this design should pave the road for solar windows of high performance.

Abstract:Inverse‐opal photonic crystal reflectors enhance the secondary absorption of the active layer by adjusting the particle size to reflect light that matches the absorption range of the acceptor. With this strategy, semitransparent organic solar cells achieve a power conversion efficiency of 9.93%, an average visible transmittance of 40.36%, and light utilization efficiency of 4.01%. Semitransparent organic solar cells (ST‐OSCs) have promising applications in building materials, automobiles, and green windows. However, photovoltaic building materials have a requirement for transmittance, which only reaches over 40% and can satisfy the condition of energy saving. In this work, a printable bionic photonic reflector is introduced to overcome the insufficient light utilization efficiency (LUE) of ST‐OSCs. The inverse‐opal photonic crystal reflectors can enhance the secondary absorption of the active layer by adjusting the particle size to reflect the wavelength of light, which can match with the absorption of the donor. Meanwhile, it allows other wavelengths of sunlight to be passed through for transmittance. With this strategy, power conversion efficiency (PCE) and average visible transmittance (AVT) are simultaneously improved. As a result, the PCE is improved to 9.93% with an AVT of 40.36%, and the LUE is significantly improved from 3.63% to 4.01%, which is a great advance in the performance of ST‐OSCs reported.

Abstract:Semitransparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs) have the potentials to open promising applications that differ from those of conventional inorganic ones, such as see-through power windows with both energy generation and heat insulation functions. However, to achieve so, there remain significant challenges, especially for balancing critical parameters, such as power conversion efficiency (PCE), average visible transparency (AVT) and low energy infrared photon radiation rejection (IRR) to realize the full potentials of ST-OSCs. Herein, we demonstrate the new design of ST-OSCs through the rational integration of organic materials, transparent electrode and infrared photon reflector in one device. With the assistance of optical simulation, new ST-OSCs with precise layout exhibit state-of-art performance, with near 30％AVT and PCE of 7.3％, as well as an excellent IRR of over 93％ (780–2500 nm), representing one of best multifunctional ST-OSCs with promising perspective for window application.

Abstract:This study advances semitransparent organic photovoltaics (ST‐OPVs) tailored for building integration, achieving over 30% visible light transmittance, 12.5% power conversion efficiency, and more than 90% infrared radiation rejection. These significant performance metrics highlight the potential for substantial energy savings in sustainable architecture through enhanced energy harvesting and improved heat insulation capabilities. Integrating semitransparent organic photovoltaics (ST‐OPVs) into building structures is a promising technology that serves aesthetic purposes while retaining window functionality, and it also facilitates solar energy harvesting and heat insulation. However, balancing power conversion efficiency (PCE), visible light transmittance (VLT), infrared radiation rejection (IRR), and color rendering index (CRI) for window applications remains a significant challenge. In this study, ST‐OPVs are developed that feature innovative near‐infrared‐absorbing materials. These devices are further coupled with an optical layer optimized through high‐throughput optical modeling to fine‐tune and enhance the different properties of the ST‐OPVs. Specifically, ST‐OPVs are achieved with a VLT of over 30%, a PCE of 12.5%, an IRR of over 90%, and a CRI of over 80. Furthermore, higher PCE of over 14% and IRR of over 95% can also be achieved, demonstrating the tunability of these photovoltaic properties. These figures highlight the exceptional performance of specialized ST‐OPVs for window applications, demonstrating their dual function of generating electricity and energy saving. Additionally, simulations show that replacing traditional heat insulation films with the ST‐OPVs can reduce annual energy demand by up to 60%, using Hong Kong as an example, underscoring their significant potential in sustainable building‐integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) applications.

Energy-Efficient Smart Window Based on Thermochromic Hydrogel with Ultrahigh Visible Transparency and Unprecedented Infrared Transmittance Modulation

Abstract:Abstract Both high visible transparency and strong solar modulating ability are highly required for energy-saving smart windows, but conventional responsive materials usually have low transparency and narrow solar transmittance range. Herein, we report a significant advance toward the design and fabrication of responsive smart windows by trapping novel V0.8W0.2O2@SiO2 doped poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAm) thermochromic liquid hydrogel within two glass panels. The smart window is highly transparent to allow solar transmittance at low temperatures, while turns opaque automatically to cut off solar energy gain when exposed in sunlight. With a remarkably low content (1.0wt‰) of dopant, V0.8W0.2O2@SiO2/PNIPAm (VSP) hydrogels exhibit ultrahigh luminous transmittance Tlum of 92.48% and solar modulation ∆Tsol of 77.20%. The superior performance is mainly attributed to that V0.8W0.2O2@SiO2 doping induces PNIPAm particles’ size reduction and internal structure change. W-doping decreases the phase transition temperature (Tc) of VO2 from 68 ºC to ~30 ºC (close to the Tc of PNIPAm), contributing to an unprecedented infrared transmittance modulation. Especially, the smart window shows excellent energy-saving during daytime outdoor demonstrations where practically achievable cooling temperature reaches up to 15.1 ºC. In addition, the smart window exhibits outstanding stability, as embodied by unchanged optical performance even after 100 transparency-opaqueness reversible cycles. This new type of thermochromic hydrogel offering unique advantages of shape-independence, scalability together with soundproof functionality promises potential applications in energy-saving buildings and greenhouses.

Abstract:Solar cells based on organometal trihalide perovskite light absorbers have recently emerged as one of the most promising class of photovoltaic devices. Given their high performances, along with their low fabrication costs, such devices are appealing for building integrated photovoltaics, especially if made semitransparent and used as solar windows. In this study, efficient perovskite solar cells with high transparency in the visible spectrum have been developed. These devices comprise a dielectric–metal–dielectric multilayered top electrode with high transparency and conductivity, and an optimized solution-based thin and continuous methylammonium lead iodide film. Through this combination of processing and device architecture developments, semitransparent solar cells with high visible transmittance and record power conversion efficiency have been prepared, including devices with a perovskite thickness as low as 55nm.

Abstract:Photovoltaic windows with easy installation for the power supply of household appliances have long been a desire of energy researchers. However, due to the lack of top electrodes that offer both high transparency and low sheet resistance, the development of high transparency photovoltaic windows for indoor lighting scenarios has lagged significantly behind photovoltaic windows where privacy issues are involved. Addressing this issue, in this work we develop a solution processable transparent top electrode using sandwich structure silver nanowires, realizing high transparency in semi‐transparent organic solar cells. The wettability and conducting properties of the electrode are improved by a modified hole‐transport layer named HP. The semi‐transparent solar cell exhibits good see‐through properties at a high average visible transmittance of 50.8%, with power conversion efficiency of 7.34%, and light utilization efficiency of 3.73%, which is the highest without optical modulations. Moreover, flexible devices based on the above‐mentioned architecture also show excellent mechanical tolerance compared with Ag electrode counterparts, which retains 94.5% of their original efficiency after 1500 bending cycles. This work provides a valuable approach for fabricating solution processed high transparency organic solar cells, which is essential in future applications in building integrated photovoltaics. Abstract:Electrochromic smart windows can reduce the energy consumption of buildings by managing the light and heat transmission. However, they need external power to work, raising the installation cost and compromising the aesthetics of the buildings. Self-powered smart windows without external power sources have great potentials in practical applications. Transparent solar cells can be integrated with the smart windows and serve as their power sources. High optical transmittance, good color neutrality and high power conversion efficiency (PCE) are required for the transparent solar cells to meet the optical and power requirements of self-powered smart windows. Here, we developed an efficient MAPbCl3 based transparent perovskite solar cell (TPSC) using a solvent-assisted two-step approach. The transparency and color-neutrality of the TPSCs were optimized through delicately selecting and paring the charge transport layers and transparent electrodes. The TPSCs achieved PCE up to 1.06% and average visible transmittance (AVT) up to 72%. Self-powered smart windows powered by the TPSCs showed fast and reversible modulation of visible light from 55% to 5% without external power input. This work demonstrates the prospect of deploying TPSCs in self-powered smart window for energy saving and sustainable buildings.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Considering the vast surface areas of windows and facades in modern urban environments, developing building-integrated photovoltaics employing transparent photovoltaic cells provides an opportunity to convert solar energy to electricity rather than generating waste heat. In this work, a non-fullerene acceptor based near-infrared (NIR) absorbing ternary component cell combined with a thin, semitransparent, high conductivity Cu-Ag alloy electrode was used to demonstrate semitransparent organic photovoltaic cells (ST-OPVs). A combination of optical outcoupling and anti-reflection coatings leads to enhance visible transmission, while reflecting the NIR back into the cell where it is absorbed. The optimized devices have the light utilization efficiency (LUE), which is equal to the product of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and the average photopic transparency compared with a conventional semitransparent cell, twice that of a cell lacking these coatings. A maximum LUE = 3.56± 0.11% is achieved for a ST-OPV with a PCE = 8.0± 0.2%% at 1 sun, AM1.5G simulated emission.
Smart Windows with a VO 2 Thin Film as a Conductive Layer for Efficient and Independent Dual-Band Modulation

Abstract:Smart windows that can modulate the transmission of sunlight entering the room can significantly reduce energy consumption. Herein, we provide a simple structure for smart windows which can modulate the transmittance of visible (vis) light actively by an external electric field and modulate the transmittance of near-infrared (NIR) light passively by temperature. The dual-band control of vis and NIR light are achieved by polymer-dispersed liquid crystal, vanadium dioxide (VO2), and Al-doped ZnO. The VO2 thin film plays two roles: NIR light control and conductive layer. There are four optical modulation modes for this kind of smart window, that is, (1) vis and NIR light passing mode, (2) vis light blocking and NIR light passing mode, (3) vis light passing and NIR light blocking mode, and (4) vis and NIR light blocking mode. The transmittance in the vis range (T lum) can be reversibly and actively modulated between 0.38 and 39.93%, and the transmittance in solar irradiation (T solar) can be reversibly and passively modulated between 42.32 and 9.95%. In the meantime, the response time (t on) decreases from 114.5 to 5.2 ms when the VO2 thin film changes from monoclinic to rutile phase. The electro-optical measurement indicates smart windows with featured fast response time, long stability, and independent modulation ability. Besides, a house model testing proves an indoor temperature cooling of 7.7 °C. Smart windows with simple structure, large area preparation, and outstanding modulation ability are promising in energy saving in buildings and automobiles.

Abstract:Semitransparent polymer solar cells (ST-PSCs) have attracted worldwide attention owing to unique superiority in multiple utilization of incident light. However, the color of ST-PSCs is relatively uniform after fabrication, cannot be dynamically tuned in terms of application requirement. Herein, we demonstrate a high-efficiency ST-PSCs as a smart window, which can be reversibly switched on and off by a gasochromic tungsten trioxide/platinum (WO3/Pt) back reflector layer. The ST-PSCs can be switchable between colored and bleached states with fast response speed of sub-second during hydrogen exposure. Meanwhile, the color and transparency-switching enable light trapping enhancement in long wavelength range, which can systematically improve power conversion efficiency (PCE). As a result, the ST-PSCs contribute a PCE of 10.2% and 9.1% as well as corresponding average visible transmission (AVT) of 25.4% and 33.8% at colored state and bleached state, respectively, which can meet the visual aesthetics requirement well in building integrated photovoltaics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first example for ST-PSCs that achieve both color-switching and light trapping. Furthermore, the smart windows facing to automobile sunroof are proposed to prove a practical application towards commercialization. We believe that smart windows with gasochromic functions can promise potential opportunities and directions for the future development of ST-PSCs.

Abstract:Window glazing plays an essential role to modulate indoor light and heat transmission, which is a prospect to save the energy cost in buildings. The latest photovoltachromic technology has been regarded as one of the most ideal solutions, however, to achieve full-frame size (100% active area) and high-contrast ratio (>30% variable in visible wavelength) for smart window applicability is still a challenge. Here we report a photovoltachromic device combining full-transparent perovskite photovoltaic and ion-gel based electrochromic components in a vertical tandem architecture without any intermediated electrode. Most importantly, by accurately adjusting the halide-exchanging period, this photovoltachromic module can realize a high pristine transmittance up to 76%. Moreover, it possesses excellent colour-rendering index to 96, wide contrast ratio (>30%) on average visible transmittance (400-780 nm), and a self-adaptable transmittance adjustment and control indoor brightness and temperature automatically depending on different solar irradiances.
