Abstract:While the impact of H2 chemistry on super adiabatic flame temperature (SAFT) for hydrocarbons is well understood, super adiabaticity for premixed H2 combustion has not been previously reported. In the present work, for the first time, premixed H2/air and H2/N2O combustion in 0D and 1D context have been analysed to show that the instantaneous (0D) or local (1D) temperature exceeds the equilibrium temperature at certain conditions. The open-source software Cantera with recently published mechanisms from the literature have been used for the simulations. The simulations consider varying unburnt mixture conditions, including pressure (1 atm ≤ Pu ≤ 20 atm), temperature (500 K ≤ Tu ≤ 4000 K), equivalence ratio (0.1 ≤ ϕ ≤ 4.0), and dilution by inert gases (10 vol%) to investigate their influence on super adiabatic combustion. The present study demonstrates the following: (a) H2/N2O cases show an order of magnitude higher super adiabaticity than H2/air mixtures, (b) the NOx chemistry is primarily responsible for super adiabaticity in H2/oxidizer combustion, and (c) for H2/air flames, super adiabaticity is caused by the endothermic reactions in the post flame region, while for H2/N2O flames, super adiabaticity is caused by the conversion of NO into N2. These findings contribute towards a better understanding of the premixed combustion of hydrogen and the role of nitrogen oxidation chemistry therein. Novelty and Significance Statement The super adiabaticity of H2/Air and H2/N2O mixtures is investigated for the first time. A novel 0D two-regime super adiabaticity for H2/Air mixture was found. However, such a double regime super adiabaticity has not been observed in 1D H2/Air flames. N2O produces super adiabaticity that is an order of magnitude stronger than that of air. Our results show that H2/Air and H2/N2O mixtures have different chemical reasons for manifesting the super adiabatic phenomenon.

A Direct Numerical Simulation Study of Flame Structure and Stabilization of an Experimental High Ka CH4/air Premixed Jet Flame

Abstract:In the present work, a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of an experimental high Karlovitz number (Ka) CH4/air piloted premixed flame was analyzed to study the inner structure and the stabilization mechanism of the turbulent flame. A reduced chemical mechanism for premixed CH4/air combustion with NOx based on GRI-Mech3.0 was used, including 268 elementary reactions and 28 transported species. The evolution of the stretch factor, I0, indicates that the burning rate per unit flame surface area is considerably reduced in the near field and exhibits a minimum at x/D = 8. Downstream, the burning rate gradually increases. The stretch factor is different between different species, suggesting the quenching of some reactions but not others. Comparison between the turbulent flame and strained laminar flames indicates that certain aspects of the mean flame structure can be represented surprisingly well by flamelets if changes in boundary conditions are accounted for and the strain rate of the mean flow is employed; however, the thickening of the flame due to turbulence is not captured. The spatial development of displacement speeds is studied at higher Ka than previous DNS. In contrast to almost all previous studies, the mean displacement speed conditioned on the flame front is negative in the near field, and the dominant contribution to the displacement speed is normal diffusion with the reaction contribution being secondary. Further downstream, reaction overtakes normal diffusion, contributing to a positive displacement speed. The negative displacement speed in the near field implies that the flame front situates itself in the pilot region where the inner structure of the turbulent flame is affected significantly, and the flame stabilizes in balance with the inward flow. Notably, in the upstream region of the turbulent flame, the main reaction contributing to the production of OH, H+O2⇔O+OH (R35), is weak. Moreover, oxidation reactions, H2+OH⇔H+H2O (R79) and CO+OH⇔CO2+H (R94), are influenced by H2O and CO2 from the pilot and are completely quenched. Hence, the entire radical pool of OH, H and O is affected. However, the fuel consumption layer remains comparably active and generates heat, mainly via the reaction CH4+OH⇔CH3+H2O (R93).

Abstract:The ignition characteristics of stoichiometric CH4/H2/air mixtures with different H2 dilution ratios were studied by using a micro flow reactor (MFR) with a controlled temperature profile. The weak flame positions of the mixtures were determined by the luminosity of CH∗, and the ignition temperatures (defined as the corresponding wall temperatures) were obtained. The ignition temperature of the mixture is smoothly decreased with a small amount of H2 addition, while the decrease of the ignition temperature is more rapid with increasing H2 dilution. One-dimensional computation with a detailed reaction mechanism was also conducted to study the ignition characteristics of the CH4/H2/air mixtures. The computational ignition temperature which is defined as the wall temperature at the peak of the heat release rate (HRR) peak is also obtained. Both the experimental and computational results show that the weak flame shifts to the lower temperature region with an increase of the H2 mole fraction. And the non-linear decrease of the ignition temperature of the CH4/H2/air weak flame versus increasing H2 dilution was also well reproduced by the numerical computation. The flame structures, primary exothermic and endothermic reactions of the CH4/H2/air weak flames were studied in detail. The importance of H and OH in the ignition process of the mixtures was analyzed, and the kinetic effects of H2 on the ignition of the mixture in the intermediate-temperature region (1000–1200 K) and high-temperature region (1200–1300 K) were elucidated. The analysis of the computational results reveals that the OH production routes in the intermediate-temperature region are substantially changed with different H2 dilutions, while the OH production routes at the peak of the heat release rate are not obviously influenced. In the end, the primary mechanism for the non-linear effects of H2 addition on the ignition temperatures of the CH4/H2 mixtures was clarified.

Abstract:To investigate the effect of initial temperature on the explosion pressure and flame characteristics of CO/CH4/air mixtures, the explosion evolution and flame development were studied using a 20 L spherical tank and high-speed camera with variable CH4 concentrations (7 vol%, 9.5 vol%, and 11 vol%) and variable CO concentrations (0–2 vol%) under variable initial temperatures (25–100 °C). Temperature sensitivity analysis, key free radical evolution, and the reaction path for CO/CH4/air mixture explosion were investigated using the detailed mechanism of GRI-mech 3.0. The results indicated that (dP/dt)max, vmax, ignition delay time, and the explosion risk for the CO/CH4/air mixture increased when the initial temperature increased. For all CO/CH4/air mixtures, the top 5 intermediate reactions in terms of temperature sensitivity were fixed, following the order of #38 H + O 2 ⇌ O + OH , #53 H + C H 4 ⇌ C H 3 + H 2 , #155 C H 3 + O 2 ⇌ O + C H 3 O , #156 C H 3 + O 2 ⇌ OH + C H 2 O , and #158 2C H 3 + M ⇌ C 2 H 6 + M . A mixture with a higher CO content at a suitable range was more sensitive to temperature changes. After the addition of CO, most of the added CO undergoes an oxidation reaction, while a small amount of CO competes with the oxidation of CH4. The CO oxidation reaction, #99 OH + CO ⇌ H + C O 2 , was several times faster than that of the other branching reactions, but it occurred later. The maximum rate of production for CO generation was not affected by the addition of CO, while the maximum rate of production for CO consumption increased linearly with CO addition.

Abstract:Numerical calculations of the laminar counterflow diffusion flames of methane-air are conducted to quantitatively study NO formations from different reaction pathways (mechanisms) at various pressures and/or initial air temperatures. A modified method, which deactivates the initiating reactions in a specific reaction pathway only for NO production while maintaining interactions with other pathways, is developed to calculate NO formation in each mechanism. Results indicate that in the thermal, prompt, N2O, and NNH reaction mechanisms, the NO production rate largely increases as the pressure or the initial air temperature increases, and in particular, as these two parameters are increased together as in a practical combustion system. In the thermal pathway, as the pressure is increased to 15 atm, NO is produced almost entirely on the fuel-lean side. In the prompt pathway, NO production generally occurs in regions with the progress variable ranging from 0.8 to 0.95; the maximum NO production rate moves from the fuel-rich towards the stoichiometric region as the pressure is increased. NO formation from the N2O or NNH mechanism occurs mainly at high pressures, but the corresponding production rate is an order of magnitude smaller than that from the thermal or prompt mechanism, respectively. In all the reaction mechanisms, NO consumption occurs through the reburn mechanism on the fuel-rich side, and the consumption rate significantly increases as the pressure and initial air temperature increase. Results herein provide a quantitative understanding of the effects of pressure and temperature on NO formations from different reaction mechanisms.
Investigation of laminar flame speeds of CH 4 /O 2 /CO 2 mixtures at ordinary pressure and kinetic simulation

Abstract:The laminar flame speeds of CH4/O2/CO2 mixtures in atmospheric conditions (300 K and 1 atm) were studied using a Bunsen burner. The surface area methodology based on images of flame was performed to obtain the laminar flame speeds for a range of equivalence ratios (from 0.6 to 1.4, step 0.1), oxygen concentrations (from 25% to 35%). The experimental data were compared to numerical flame speed predictions which was based on GRI-Mech.ver 3.0 mechanism using a Chemkin package. The results showed that the maximum of flame speeds appeared at the stoichiometric ratio. With an increase in O2 concentration, the flame speeds increased. The effect of CO2 dilution was also investigated with experimental measurements, flame structure analysis and reaction pathway analysis from calculation. In premixed CH4/O2/CO2 flame, the combustion reactants, important intermediate and products concentration became lower and the flame thickness became thicker compared to CH4/O2/N2 mixtures. The major oxidation pathway of CH4/O2/CO2 remain unchanged but contribution rates of major intermediates formation have changed a lot. In addition, a part of secondary chemical pathways have changed.

Abstract:numerical study of the counterflow diffusion flames of methane/air at both subcritical and supercritical pressures, which have very important applications in the air-breathing rocket and advanced gas turbine engines, is conducted to obtain fundamental understanding of the flame characteristics. The analysis is based on a general mathematical formulation and accommodates a unified treatment of general fluids thermodynamics and accurate calculations of thermophysical properties. Results reveal that the maximum flame temperature occurs on the fuel-rich side for low-pressure conditions and shifts toward the stoichiometric position when the pressure increases. The maximum flame temperature increases with an increasing pressure, but decreases with an increasing strain rate. The flame width is inversely proportional to the square root of the product of the pressure and strain rate as δ∝ 1/ . -√(p · a) . The total heat release rate varies with the pressure and strain rate in a relationship of ( Q release √( p·a ) 0.518 . An increased pressure leads to a slightly more complete combustion process near the stoichiometric position, but its effect on NO production is minor. Under the test conditions, variations of the strain rate have significant impacts on the formation of major pollutants. An increased strain rate leads to the decreased mole fraction of CO in the fuel-rich region and significantly reduced NO near the stoichiometric position.
Experimental Study on Structure and Blow-Off Characteristics of NH 3/CH 4 Co-Firing Flames in a Swirl Combustor

Abstract:Experimental study on the unconfined lean premixed NH3/CH4 /air flames with three CH4 fractions of 0, 50%, and 100% stabilized on a bluff-body and swirl burner was investigated. The flow fields and instantaneous OH distributions were captured by synchronous PIV/OH-PLIF measurement. The macrostructure and critical mechanism of blow-off for the compact NH3/air flame at conditions far away and near blow-off, and the effect of CH4 addition on the topology and flame stabilization was discussed. Results show that the NH3/air flame possesses a poor lean blow-off limit Phi(b), and the NH3/air mixture can not be ignited when U-in is higher than 5 m/s. After adding 50% CH4 fuel, the laminar flame speed S-L and the extinction strain rate K-ext are approximately 3 times and 7 times that of the NH3/air flame with equivalence ratio Phi = 0.8, resulting in a more stable flame. And the NH3/air flame Phi(b) = 0.78 with inlet bulk velocity U-in = 4 m/s can be extended wider by 16.6% to Phi(b) = 0.65. The NH3 flame front has been locally extinguished due to excessive stretching, which is the key factor of triggering the overall blow-off. Stretching is mainly caused by shear strain. CH4 addition makes the flame front more wrinkled. Furthermore, the flame is strengthened due to the enhanced resistance to stretching by blending CH4 with NH3. But the root of the NH3/CH4/air flames with methane fractions of 50% and 100% also have excessive straining near the blow-off conditions, which induces flame blow-off. The increase of burning velocity and temperature by adding CH4 is also conducive to improving flame stability. The Inner Shear Layer (ISL) vortexes promote the uniform mixing of combustion products in the Inner Recirculation Zone (IRZ) and downstream combustion gas, which is conducive to the stability of CH4/air flame. For NH3/air flame, the ISL vortexes accelerate the flame blow-off by entraining the cold reactants into the IRZ.

Abstract:The role of low-temperature chemistry/ignition (LTC/LTI) in aero engine-like combustors that feature confined bluff-body and swirling flows inside has been studied in the present work. A series of CH4/DME/air mixtures were experimentally investigated at ϕ=0.65 with the volume fraction of DME in the fuel blend (αDME) ranging from 0% to 100% to take LTI into account. To this end, OH-PLIF and CH2O-PLIF measurements combined with PIV and thermocouple methods are used to capture high-temperature and low-temperature flames (HTFs and LTFs) and the flow field and temperature in the outer recirculation zone (ORZ). It is found that adding DME into the lean CH4/air mixture has the potential to introduce LTF in the ORZ under certain conditions. There are three flame regimes in the bluff-body swirl burner in terms of DME enrichment (αDME): (1) When αDME<50%, neither of LTF and HTF exist in the ORZ, and only a V-shape HTF is observed between the inner shear layer (ISL) and inner recirculation zone (IRZ), denoted as regime I. (2) When 50%≤αDME≤70%, a stable LTF in the ORZ can co-exist with the above V-shape HTF, denoted as regime II. (3) When αDME>70%, besides the V-shape HTF, the LTF in the ORZ and a new HTF front between the ORZ and outer shear layer (OSL) can exist intermittently, i.e., the LTF first occurs in the ORZ and then transitions to the new HTF between the ORZ and OSL, denoted as regime III. Furthermore, using an ignition Damköhler number (Daig), defined as the ratio of maximum fluid residence time and evaluated shortest first-stage or second-stage ignition delay time in the ORZ, is able to reasonably classify the flame regimes. These results open up the possibility of employing LTI to extend the stability margin of lean swirling flames.

Abstract:The high temperature air combustion is the newest combustion technology developed in recent years. In order to better understand its mechanism and characteristics of super-low NOx emission level, a numerical simulation combined with the diffusion combustion model, thermal NO model and theturbulent N-S equation has been performed in this paper. Flame features and Influences of preheated air temperature on combustion process and NO emission have been investigated. The numerical results agree with measurement very well.This research provided fundamental date for developing the technology in China.

Abstract:Homogeneous ignition of methane/air/NOx mixtures was investigated numerically.Simulations of ignition processes at different initial temperatures and NOx concentrations were conducted.The chemical mechanism for the ignition enhancement of methane/air due to NO and NO2 was revealed via sensitivity analysis and reaction-path analysis.It was found that the oxidization of CH3 is relatively slow without the addition of NOx,which results in the slow ignition of methane/air.However,CH3 can be quickly oxidized when NO or NO2 is added.It was demonstrated that NO or NO2 works as the catalyst for the oxidization of CH3.

Abstract:This work investigates both autoignition and combustion characteristics in highly preheated and diluted combustion of a laminar premixed stoichiometric CH4/O2/N2 mixture in a cylindrical combustor operating at elevated pressures. The analysis was carried out for a range of operating parameters, including reactant preheat temperatures of 1100–1500 K, combustor pressures of 1-10 atm, and in a highly diluted mixture, achieved by decreasing the oxygen content in the oxidizer from 21% to 3% on volume basis. Simulations were conducted using the laminar premixed adiabatic PFR (plug flow reactor) model of Ansys Chemkin Pro. Two-dimensional pictorial representation was performed using the finite volume-based CFD code Ansys Fluent 19.2. Finite-rate chemistry with the detailed chemical mechanism GRI Mech 3.0 was used for combustion analysis. Results showed that OH and HCO mole fractions decreased with increasing combustor pressure and N2 dilution (or decreased O2 content), while the mole fractions increased with reactant temperature. It was also found that, by reducing the oxygen content in the mixture, the flame stabilized far away from the combustor inlet. In contrast, an increase in combustor pressure and reactant temperature stabilized the flame toward the combustor inlet. These flame stabilization characteristics at different locations of the combustor are explained in terms of ignition delay time, which were calculated using the closed homogenous reactor (CHR) model available in the Ansys Chemkin Pro package. The flame peak temperature decreased with increased N2 dilution and increased by increasing the reactant temperature. Moreover, the peak temperature varied marginally when the combustor pressure was increased. Finally, a regime diagram was prepared to show the various combustion modes, such as HiTAC, MILD combustion, and the no ignition region as a function of O2 content and reactant temperature for different operating pressures. The CO and NO emission were reduced with an increase in pressure in the MILD combustion region.

Abstract:An uncommon non-monotonic behavior of the temperature dependence of adiabatic laminar burning velocity has been found in over-rich methane+air flames at equivalence ratio, phi=1.4. To find out the universality and reasons of this turning point, methane, ethane and propane +air flames are studied both experimentally by the heat flux method and numerically using GRI-mech, USC-mech, UCSD-mech, FFCM mech, and Aramco mech over phi = 0.6-1.8, at unburned temperatures up to 368K, and atmospheric pressure. Results show that the over-rich phenomena stem from a unique flame structure, where, after the flame front, H2O is reduced to H-2 and C2Hx (x>1) is oxidized to CO, causing the temperature overtone (super adiabatic flame temperature), while some key reactions important for flame propagation changing their sensitivity signs. Inside the flame front, the importance of CH3 overwhelms other radicals like OH and H. By these distinguishing features, a method using temperature overtone to identify accurate turning points of over-rich regime is demonstrated. (C) 2019 The Combustion Institute. Abstract:In this work, the explosion thermal behavior of H2/CH4/air mixtures, at different equivalence ratios (0.6–1.6) and hydrogen volume fractions (0%–100), was investigated in a confined 20-L chamber. The parameters of explosion time and pressure, as well as the explosion heat loss were quantitatively studied and analyzed. Moreover, the dominant chain reactions of the explosion process and heat release were identified via the detailed mechanism of the Foundational Fuel Chemistry Model (FFCM1). The results indicated that an increased H2 volume fraction in the mixtures increased the peak explosion pressure, maximum pressure rise rate and deflagration index. In addition, the explosion duration and fast-burning period were greatly shortened. Both the adiabatic flame temperature and thermal diffusivity monotonically increased with increasing H2 volume ratio. Moreover, the enhancement effect of the H2 ratio on the thermal diffusivity of H2/CH4 mixtures was more prominent for fuel-rich mixtures than for fuel-lean mixtures. The obtained quantitative results are helpful for developing measures to prevent the potential explosion accidents.

The explosion pressure history and flame propagating are obtained using a 20 L spherical tank and a high-speed camera. The heat loss is calculated and the temperature sensitivity and the rate of production are analysed engaged in the GRI-mech 3.0 mechanism. Results showed that the addition of H2 has the highest improvement in the explosion characteristics of 7 vol% CH4 mixtures. The effect on the explosion is mainly reflected in the flame speed and explosion time caused by the changes in heat loss. As the initial temperature increase, the most positive and negative reaction on the temperature sensitivity is R38 and R158, respectively. After H2 addition, the overall sensitivity is reduced and the dominant role of R38 is more prominent. Based on the ROP development, the whole reaction is divided into 4 stages: reaction acceleration, extreme reaction, intermediate species conversion, and reaction termination. Moreover, R38 is the most promoted and dominant reaction for ROP of O2 and OH. R84 is the most inhibit reaction of H2 oxidation and has a great influence on the ROP of OH.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Understanding and characterizing the non-homogenous ignition of flammable mixtures by hot particles are important for industry safety. In this study, one-dimensional transient simulations considering detailed chemistry and transport are conducted for the ignition of static methane/air and hydrogen/air mixtures by hot particles with different radii. The objective is to assess the effects of particle size on the ignition delay time for the hot particle-induced ignition process. Unlike the nearly homogenous ignition in shock tubes or rapid compression machines, the non-homogeneous ignition caused by a hot particle depends on not only chemical kinetics but also transport of reactive species. It is found that 1D hot particle ignition is much slower than the 0D homogenous ignition (in which the mixture temperature is the same as the fixed particle temperature) since there is radical loss near the particle surface caused by mass diffusion. The ignition delay time for hot particle ignition is found to strongly depend on the particle radius and temperature. This is interpreted through the change of radical loss with particle radius and temperature. Moreover, to characterize the hot particle ignition, we introduce a Damköhler number which is the ratio between two characteristic times for chemical reaction and mass diffusion. The change of the normalized ignition delay time for 1D hot particle with the Damköhler number is discussed; and a linear relationship is observed for certain conditions.

Abstract:Detailed kinetic calculations of chemical reactions using GRI-Mech 3.0 are carried out to characterize the combustion of CH4/O2/N2 mixture in a well-stirred reactor (WSR). Very wide ranges of the inlet temperature Tin (300 K–2700 K), nitrogen dilution concentration (0%–99%) and global equivalence ratio (0.5–4.0) are considered. The extinction and self-ignition temperatures (Tex and Tsi) of the CH4/O2/N2 mixture are identified by the ignition-extinction S-curve. Based on Tex, Tsi TWSR, and the operative conditions (Tin and the mixture composition), the WSR combustion of CH4/O2/N2 can be quantitatively classified into several particular regimes. Moreover, the product composition and elementary chemical pathways of the CH4 oxidation are also examined. Results demonstrate that the WSR working temperature determines the chemical characteristics of the CH4 oxidation rather than the combustion regime.

Abstract:Study on shockflame and the set of equations, which describe the shockheated ignition process are derived. The variation histories of pressure and temperature as well as concentrations of species in shockflame for CH4/N2/O2 Mixtures are simulated by using both GRIMECH mechanism for methane consisted of 32 species in 177 reactions studied by Berkley University and some models, the released thermodynamic databases of CHEMKINIII package developed by Sandia National Laboratory. Computational results indicate that shockflame has its characteristics alone.

Abstract:Pressurized oxy-fuel combustion is regarded as a new generation of oxy-fuel technology. The ignition delay times of methane in an O-2/N-2 atmosphere (0.21O(2) + 0.79N(2)) and an O-2/CO2 atmosphere (0.21O(2) + 0.79CO(2)) were measured in a shock tube at a pressure of 0.8 atm, an equivalence ratio of 0.5, and within a temperature range of 1501-1847 K. The present experimental data and the experimental data of Hargis and Peterson at 1.75 and 10 atm were adopted to evaluate five representative chemical kinetic models. This paper studied the chemical effects (chaperon effects of CO2 and the effects of reactions containing CO2) and physical effects of CO2 on the ignition of methane at different pressures and temperatures in detail using a modified model. Artificial materials X and Y were employed to analyze the chemical and physical effects. The analysis showed that the physical effects of CO2 inhibit the ignition of methane and are not sensitive to the temperature. The chemical effects of CO2 vary greatly with the pressure and temperature. At 0.8 and 1.75 atm, the chemical effects of CO2 promote the ignition of methane at a high temperature while suppress the ignition of methane at a low temperature. The chaperon effects of CO2 promote the ignition of methane in O-2/CO2 atmospheres at a high temperature mainly because of HCO + M double left right arrow CO + H + M. The chaperon effects of CO2 suppress the ignition of methane at a low temperature because of 2CH(3) (+M) double left right arrow C2H6 (+M). The chemical effects of CO2 offset half of the physical effects of CO2 at a high temperature, and those two effects are great at a low temperature, which is the reason for the fact that the effect of CO2 is subtle at a high temperature and evident at a low temperature. At 10 atm, the chemical effects of CO2 suppress the ignition of methane at 1350-1700 K. The chaperon effects of CO2 suppress the ignition of methane mainly as a result of 2CH(3) (+M) double left right arrow C2H6 (+M) and are strengthened with the decrease of the temperature. The inhibition of reactions involving CO2 is mainly attributed to CO + OH double left right arrow CO2 + H and weakened with the decrease of the temperature; thus, the chemical effects of CO2 on the ignition are almost not sensitive to the temperature. The effects of CO2 have almost not change with the temperature at 10 atm.
