Abstract:Neurons have two molecularly and functionally distinct compartments: dendrites that receive input from other cells or the outside world, and axons that transmit the signal to target cells. Dendritic morphology is often branched to increase its receptive capability. Precise dendritic morphology is crucial to maintain neural connectivity, and it is essential for proper brain function. However, the underlying mechanisms that regulate dendritic morphology are not well understood. To understand dendritic morphogenesis, we chose class-IV dendritic arborization neurons of Drosophila melanogaster larva as a model system because many molecules have been reported to regulate dendritic morphology.
