Abstract:As an important agricultural mode and heritage site in lowland areas with abundant water resources, dike-pond agriculture in China bloomed from the Ming dynasty (1368-1644 CE) and is famous with a "Mulberry Dike-Fish Ponds" type. However, their spatial pattern and morphology have been altered due to international trade and demands from textiles to freshwater aquatic products. Therefore, this study used topographic maps from 1949, declassified keyhole data during 1967-1975, Landsat images during 1975-2010 and Chinese Gaofen (GF-1) images to extract dike-pond landscapes and then revealed the spatial-temporal dynamics of their patterns and morphology. The results showed that four stages of dike-pond landscape changes during 1949-1967 indicated rapid fluctuations. Different towns also have obvious differences in temporal and spatial changes in dike-pond landscapes. The dike-pond landscape was mainly concentrated in the southern part of the study area. The spatial gradient of the dike-pond landscape changes showed that the dike had an upward trend within 9 km and then dropped to 11-12 km. The interannual variation in the buffer zone greater than 6 km is relatively larger. The landscape metrics showed that the aggregation decreased and the shape of the dike-pond landscape increased in a scattered state. The dike-pond gain type increased from 1967 to 1995 and then gradually decreased during 1995-2020. The dike-pond loss type increased from 1967 to 2005 and then gradually decreased during 2005-2020. Therefore, the findings show that dike-pond landscape dynamics are key concerns for decision-makers and stakeholders for sustainable development.
