Abstract:The last decade has witnessed significant advances in energy harvesting technology for the realization of self-charging electronics and self-powered wireless sensor nodes (WSNs). To conquer the energy-insufficiency issue of a single energy harvester, hybrid energy harvesting systems have been proposed in recent years. Hybrid harvesting includes not only scavenging energy from multiple sources, but also converting energy into electricity by multiple types of transduction mechanisms. A reasonable hybridization of multiple energy conversion mechanisms not only improves the space utilization efficiency but can also boost the power output significantly. Given the continuously growing trend of hybrid energy harvesting technology, herein we present a comprehensive review of recent progress and representative works, especially focusing on vibrational and thermal energy harvesters which play the dominant role in hybrid energy harvesting. The working principles and typical configurations for piezoelectric, electromagnetic, triboelectric, thermoelectric and pyroelectric transduction effects are briefly introduced. On this basis, a variety of hybrid energy harvesting systems, including mechanisms, configurations, output performance and advantages, are elaborated. Comparisons and perspectives on the effectiveness of hybrid vibrational and thermal harvesters are provided. A variety of potential application prospects of the hybrid systems are discussed, including infrastructure health monitoring, industry condition monitoring, smart transportation, human healthcare monitoring, marine monitoring systems, and aerospace engineering, towards the future Internet-of-Things (IoT) era.

Abstract:Ambient energy harvesting has great potential to contribute to sustainable development and address growing environmental challenges. Converting waste energy from energy-intensive processes and systems (e.g. combustion engines and furnaces) is crucial to reducing their environmental impact and achieving net-zero emissions. Compact energy harvesters will also be key to powering the exponentially growing smart devices ecosystem that is part of the Internet of Things, thus enabling futuristic applications that can improve our quality of life (e.g. smart homes, smart cities, smart manufacturing, and smart healthcare). To achieve these goals, innovative materials are needed to efficiently convert ambient energy into electricity through various physical mechanisms, such as the photovoltaic effect, thermoelectricity, piezoelectricity, triboelectricity, and radiofrequency wireless power transfer. By bringing together the perspectives of experts in various types of energy harvesting materials, this Roadmap provides extensive insights into recent advances and present challenges in the field. Additionally, the Roadmap analyses the key performance metrics of these technologies in relation to their ultimate energy conversion limits. Building on these insights, the Roadmap outlines promising directions for future research to fully harness the potential of energy harvesting materials for green energy anytime, anywhere.

Abstract:With the fast development of energy harvesting technology, micro-nano or scale-up energy harvesters have been proposed to allow sensors or internet of things (IoT) applications with self-powered or self-sustained capabilities. Facilitation within smart homes, manipulators in industries and monitoring systems in natural settings are all moving toward intellectually adaptable and energy-saving advances by converting distributed energies across diverse situations. The updated developments of major applications powered by improved energy harvesters are highlighted in this review. To begin, we study the evolution of energy harvesting technologies from fundamentals to various materials. Secondly, self-powered sensors and self-sustained IoT applications are discussed regarding current strategies for energy harvesting and sensing. Third, subdivided classifications investigate typical and new applications for smart homes, gas sensing, human monitoring, robotics, transportation, blue energy, aircraft, and aerospace. Lastly, the prospects of smart cities in the 5G era are discussed and summarized, along with research and application directions that have emerged.

Abstract:Recent emphasis on green communications has generated great interest in the investigations of energy harvesting communications and networking. Energy harvesting from ambient energy sources can potentially reduce the dependence on the supply of grid or battery energy, providing many attractive benefits to the environment and deployment. However, unlike the conventional stable energy, the intermittent and random nature of the renewable energy makes it challenging in the realization of energy harvesting transmission schemes. Extensive research studies have been carried out in recent years to address this inherent challenge from several aspects: energy sources and models, energy harvesting and usage protocols, energy scheduling and optimization, implementation of energy harvesting in cooperative, cognitive radio, multiuser and cellular networks, etc. However, there has not been a comprehensive survey to lay out the complete picture of recent advances and future directions. To fill such a gap, in this paper, we present an overview of the past and recent developments in these areas and highlight a number of possible future research avenues.

Abstract:Vibrational energy harvesters capture mechanical energy from ambient vibrations and convert the mechanical energy into electrical energy to power wireless electronic systems. Challenges exist in the process of capturing mechanical energy from ambient vibrations. For example, resonant harvesters may be used to improve power output near their resonance, but their narrow bandwidth makes them less suitable for applications with varying vibrational frequencies. Higher operating frequencies can increase harvesters power output, but many vibrational sources are characterized by lower frequencies, such as human motions. This paper provides a thorough review of state of the art energy harvesters based on various energy sources such as solar, thermal, electromagnetic and mechanical energy, as well as smart materials including piezoelectric materials and carbon nanotubes. The paper will then focus on vibrational energy harvesters to review harvesters using typical transduction mechanisms and various techniques to address the challenges in capturing mechanical energy and delivering it to the transducers.

Abstract:Multiple parameter environment monitoring via wireless internet of thing sensors is growing rapidly, thanks to low power techniques of the node. More importantly, the ever more complex and highly efficient energy harvesting systems enable long-term continuous monitoring in inaccessible environments without needing to change the battery. This paper reviews existing energy harvesting modalities, including photovoltaic, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, electromagnetic, and vibration, together with circuit techniques of interfacing power management circuits for energy harvesters. Moreover, techniques used to interface with multiple mode energy harvesters to obtain a stable output power with optimal power efficiency are discussed as an emerging direction. The state-of-the-art energy harvesting systems together with future development trends are provided.

Abstract:Historically, battery is the power source for mobile, embedded and remote system applications. However, the development of battery techniques does not follow the Moore's Law. The large physical size, limited electric quantity and high-cost replacement process always restrict the performance of the application such as embedded systems, wireless sensors networks and lower-power electronics. Energy harvesting, a technique which enables the applications to scavenge energy from RF signal from TV towers, solar energy, piezoelectric driven by motion of people and thermal energy from the temperature difference, which could dramatically extend the operating lifetime of applications. Thus, energy harvesting is important for the sustainable operations of an application.

Abstract:The concept of energy harvesting works towards developing self-powered devices that do not require replaceable power supplies. Energy scavenging devices are designed to capture the ambient energy surrounding the electronics and convert it into usable electrical energy. A number of sources of harvestable ambient energy exist, including waste heat, vibration, electromagnetic waves, wind, flowing water, and solar energy. While each of these sources of energy can be effectively used to power remote sensors, the structural and biological communities have placed an emphasis on scavenging vibrational energy with ferroelectric materials. Ferroelectric materials have a crystalline structure that provide a unique ability to convert an applied electrical potential into a mechanical strain or vice versa. Based on the properties of the material, this paper investigates the technique of power harvesting and storage.

Abstract:Energy harvesting from mechanical vibrations, thermal gradients, electromagnetic radiations, and solar radiations has experienced rapid progress in recent times not only to develop an alternative power source that can replace conventional batteries to energize portable and personal electronics smartly but also to achieve sustainable self‐sufficient micro/nanosystems. Utilizing micro‐electromechanical system (MEMS) and microfluidics technologies through selective designs and fabrications effectively, those energy harvesters can be considerably downsized while ensuring a stable, portable, and consistent power supply. Although ambient energy sources such as solar radiation are harvested for decades, recent developments have enabled ambient vibrations, electromagnetic radiation, and heat to be harvested wirelessly, independently, and sustainably. Developments in the field of microfluidics have also led to the design and fabrication of novel energy harvesting devices. This paper reviews the recent advancements in energy harvesting technologies such as piezoelectric, electromagnetic, electrostatic, thermoelectric, radio frequency, and solar to drive self‐powered portable electronics. Moreover, the potential application of MEMS and microfluidics as well as MEMS‐based structures and fabrication techniques for energy harvesting are summarized and presented. Finally, a few crucial challenges affecting the performance of energy harvesters are addressed. This review covers energy harvesting technologies such as piezoelectric, electromagnetic, electrostatic, thermoelectric, radio frequency, and solar to drive self‐powered portable electronics, reviewing their recent analytical performances and highlighting critical shortcomings yet to be resolved. In‐depth insights into future development of micro‐electromechanical system and microfluidics technologies are provided for a paradigm shift in the field of energy harvesting in the next decade.

Abstract:Natural and human environments are abundant of unused renewable energy such as mechanical energy, acoustic energy, electromagnetic energy, thermal energy, etc. The idea of designing multi-scale metamaterials with super-normal functions on energy manipulation is utilized in multi-field renewable energy harvesting and absorbing. The metamaterials are able to enhance the local energy density by confining and focusing the energy before it to be harvested, leading to remarkable improvement of the output power and conversion efficiency. Leveraging the multi-scale metamaterials for renewable energy harvesting is an emerging direction to exploit the excess energy in the natural and man-made environments. This paper provides a brief overview of the studies published over the past decade on mechanical, acoustic, electromagnetic and thermal energy harvesting using the relevant metamaterials. The goal is to spark the interest of new investigators to this unconventional but fast-evolving branch of energy harvesting that will impact the Internet of things, smart cities and sustainable developments.

Abstract:As the world's demand for alternative energy increases, the development of green energy harvesters becomes ever more important. As a result, the creation of triboelectric (TENG), piezoelectric (PENG), and pyroelectric nanogenerators, electromagnetic generators (EMG), solar cells, and electrochemical cells is attracting interest in an effort to convert mechanical, thermal, magnetic, solar, and chemical energy into electricity. In order to take advantage of the ambient energies from our surrounding environment, the design of hybridized generator units that can simultaneously scavenge energy in a variety of forms continues to develop. These systems are being considered to satisfy the energy needs of a range of electronic devices and adapt to a variety of working environments. This review demonstrates the latest progress in hybridized nanogenerators in accordance with their structure, operating principle, and applications. These studies demonstrate new approaches to developing hybrid techniques and novel assemblies for efficiently harvesting environmental energy from a number of sources.

Abstract:With the fast developments of low power wireless sensor networks and microelectromechanical system, energy supply is becoming a big barrier to their applications in engineering. Now a solution is to use microelectromagnetic vibration energy harvesters. The principle, physical model and design rule of electromagnetic vibration energy harvesters are presented. Geometric model, structural parameters, output results and technical characteristics of various electromagnetic vibration energy harvesters are analyzed. Finally, the difficulty and the challenge faced by us to develop electromagnetic vibration energy harvesters are discussed, and the development trend is pointed out.

Abstract:Energy harvesting technologies based on piezoelectric properties of nanomaterials and triboelectric phenomenon between two different materials are superior candidates for random mechanical energy harvesting in the environment. Self-powered system integrated with such kind of energy harvesting module and multi-functional nanodevices have great application potentials in the independent, sustainable, maintenance-free operations of implantable biosensors, remote and mobile environmental sensors, nanorobotics, microelectromechanical systems, and even portable/wearable personal electronics. Several recent progresses are summarized here.

Abstract:A high‐efficiency droplet energy nanogenerator (DENG) is devised relying on straightforward fabrication and recycled materials. It achieves superb electrical outputs, with a voltage of > 190 V, a power density of 65W m−2, and an energy conversion efficiency of 3.6%. A single device weighs ≈0.8 grams, making it easily implemented on diverse outdoor scenarios for self‐sustainable environmental intelligent networks. How far are the authors as a community from achieving self‐sustainable ambient intelligence? The question calls for rational energy layouts to satisfy the ubiquitous power demands from diverse terminal products. Harnessing energy directly from the surroundings thus provides ideal solutions. The majority of existing environmental harvesters rely on sophisticated procedures and expensive or toxic materials; while others attempt to streamline the complexity at the cost of compromising performance. This entails transducers that exhibit superb outputs and also employ cost‐effective, even recycled materials and straightforward protocols to render ubiquitous deployments. Here, a high‐efficiency droplet energy nanogenerator (DENG) is devised to satisfy all the requirements. The DENG is fabricated by directly coating a composite layer on a recycled digital video disk surface. It achieves superb electricity generation from one droplet, with an output voltage of >190 V at an instantaneous power density of 65 W m−2, and an energy conversion efficiency of 3.60%. Diverse demonstrations confirm the applicability of the DENG in environmental networks, encompassing self‐sustainable "on plants" sensing systems, smart building windows, and remote environmental monitoring platforms. In light of these superiorities, it is believed that the DENG may open up new alternative routes for future energy strategies.

Abstract:Piezoelectric energy harvesters have gained significant attention in recent years due to their ability to convert ambient mechanical vibrations into electrical energy, which opens up new possibilities for environmental monitoring, asset tracking, portable technologies and powering remote "Internet of Things (IoT)" nodes and sensors. This review explores various aspects of piezoelectric energy harvesters, discussing the structural designs and fabrication techniques including inorganic-based energy harvesters (i.e., piezoelectric ceramics and ZnO nanostructures) and organic-based energy harvesters (i.e., polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) and its copolymers). The factors affecting the performance and several strategies to improve the efficiency of devices have been also explored. In addition, this review also demonstrated the progress in flexible energy harvesters with integration of flexibility and stretchability for next-generation wearable technologies used for body motion and health monitoring devices. The applications of the above devices to harvest various forms of mechanical energy are explored, as well as the discussion on perspectives and challenges in this field.

Abstract:Seeking renewable and clean energies is essential for releasing the heavy reliance on mineral-based energy and remedying the threat of global warming to our environment. In the last decade, explosive growth in research and development efforts devoted to microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology and nanowires-related nanotechnology have paved a great foundation for new mechanisms of harvesting mechanical energy at the micro/nano-meter scale. MEMS-based inertial sensors have been the enabler for numerous applications associated with smart phones, tablets, and mobile electronics. This is a valuable reference for all those faced with the challenging problems created by the ever-increasing interest in MEMS and nanotechnology-based energy harvesters and their applications. This book presents fundamental physics, theoretical design, and method of modeling for four mainstream energy harvesting mechanisms - piezoelectric, electromagnetic, electrostatic, and triboelectric. Readers are provided with a comprehensive technical review and historical view of each mechanism. The authors also present current challenges in energy harvesting technology, technical reviews, design requirements, case studies, along with unique and representative examples of energy harvester applications.

Abstract:The development of wearable electronics is revolutionizing human health monitoring, intelligent robotics, and informatics. Yet the reliance on traditional batteries limits their wearability, user comfort, and continuous use. Energy harvesting technologies offer a promising power solution by converting ambient energy from the human body or surrounding environment into electrical power. Despite their potential, current studies often focus on individual modules under specific conditions, which limits practical applicability in diverse real-world environments. Here, this review highlights the recent progress, potential, and technological challenges in energy harvesting technology and accompanying technologies to construct a practical powering module, including power management and energy storage devices for wearable device developments. Also, this paper offers perspectives on designing next-generation wearable soft electronics that enhance quality of life and foster broader adoption in various aspects of daily life.

Abstract:With the advantages of environmental protection, energy saving and sustainability, the technology of energy harvesting and conversion coupled with atmospheric water gathering has gradually attracted the attention of researchers under the threat of global water and energy issues. This review paper briefly described the basic working principles of energy harvesting and conversion coupled with atmospheric water gathering technology at first and then comprehensively summarized the representative materials and corresponding devices recently developed for the generation of different kinds of energies (such as electricity and chemical energy, especially hydrogen energy) by energy harvesting and conversion coupled with atmospheric water gathering technology. Electricial energy was generated based on four effects (thermoelectric, electrokinetic, triboelectric and hydrovoltaic effects) and two processes (electrochemical and photoelectric chemical processes), while hydrogen was produced based on photoelectrochemistry, photocatalysis and photovoltaic electrolysis. Based on the above analysis, it was found that the great progress, including new mechanisms and new technical paths, has been achieved on energy harvesting and conversion coupled with atmospheric water gathering technology in the last few years, but there are still many challenges to overcome and directions to explore for further development. At last, this review paper discussed some potential strategies for promoting the output efficiency and performance of energy harvesting and conversion devices. Optimizing the materials and components used in energy harvesting and conversion devices and adding energy storage modules to achieve all-weather energy supply will push this technology into a wider range of applications and better solve the global water and energy crises.

Abstract:Harvesting energy from ambient mechanical vibrations is an enabling technology with profound societal impacts. However, existing methods suffer from two major technical deficiencies: the weak coupling between the harvester and the vibrating source and the low energy transduction efficiency. Here we show an adaptive approach can overcome these challenges, leading to improvements by orders of magnitude. Using a piezoelectric device, we demonstrate that a conservative actuation force can block energy from flowing back to the vibrating source, thereby increasing the coupling strength and increasing the transduction efficiency significantly. Using low actuation forces, the adaptive approach can extract almost two orders of magnitude more power than the traditional approach from a multi-frequency vibration. The improvement can increase to three orders of magnitude when moderate actuation force is used. If materials that can withstand a high actuation voltage are available, the adaptive approach has the potential to surpass the theoretical performance ceiling of the traditional approach, improving the upper-bound performance by over 100 times and creating a significant opportunity for the technology to advance.

Abstract:Radio frequency (RF) energy harvesting is a promising technique to energize low power electronic devices due to the sustainability it could offer resulting from the surge in ambient wireless signals it could utilize. In this paper, a concise literature survey on this technique is presented. Firstly, the architecture of a RF energy harvesting network is briefly introduced. Secondly, background relating to the antenna and rectifier designs is provided. Finally, some state-of-the-art designs from recent years are presented.
