In article number 1700302, Huijuan Lin, Wei Huang and co-workers introduce several fiber and fabric lithium ion batteries with high energy density and excellent flexibility. These batteries are often composed of parallel, twisted and cable architectures which can be reversibly deformed. Through mature knitting technology, one-dimensional fiber or fabric batteries can be woven into two-dimensional textiles, allowing for a variety of promising applications.

Abstract:With the unique one-dimensional structure, fiber shape energy storage batteries, represented by lithium-ion fiber batteries, play an important role in energy supplement for wearable devices. The diameter of lithium-ion fiber batteries usually lies between tens to hundreds of micrometers. The outstanding flexibility can accommodate multiple deformation such as bending, twisting, and stretching. By low-cost weaving method, lithium-ion fiber batteries can be easily weaved into energy storage fabrics and integrate with daily clothes. However, traditional fiber batteries suffer from inefficient preparation and poor performance matching, which can hardly move forward from laboratory to industrial production. In addition, researchers used to believe that with the increase of length, the internal resistance of fiber batteries also increase, which seriously hindered the theoretical development of large-scale fiber batteries. In this feature article, we briefly summarize the research progress of fiber shape energy storage devices in recent years. For practical application requirement, the development of flexible lithium-ion fiber batteries is sufficiently concluded based on the work of our group. Firstly, continuous manufacture of lithium-ion fiber batteries is discussed. Largescale production of lithium-ion batteries was realized for the first time, which met the prerequisites of broad usage. The variation of internal resistance with length was revealed for the special 1D structure of fiber batteries. The electrochemical performance, mechanical properties, and tolerance performance were characterized under practical scenarios. Furthermore, based on continuously prepared lithium-ion fiber batteries, energy storage fabrics and integration with wearable devices are developed. This showed promising applications in healthcare, communication, and motion monitoring. Finally, the future of flexible fiber shape energy storage devices is prospected. Efforts should be devoted to improving the electrochemical performance of lithium-ion fiber batteries, such as energy density, power density and cycle performance. Besides, fiber battery pack technique should be investigated to adapt more real-life scenarios. Suitable application for energy storage fabrics are still awaited to be explored.

Abstract:Wearable electronic devices are important in recording signals related to human activities. Because the performance of wearable electronic devices depends heavily on power sources, batteries, especially fiber batteries have been attracting numerous attention in the past decades. Here, we present a perspective of fiber lithium-ion battery (FLIB) equipped with excellent energy supply, deformability, and feasibility to be woven into textile electronics. The scalable production and sustainable application of these FLIBs in health monitoring could be realized benefitting from the decreased internal resistance with length. This kind of fiber battery is anticipated to show its potentials in not only next-generation flexible devices but also regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.
Scalable production of high-performing woven lithium-ion fibre batteries

Abstract:Fibre lithium-ion batteries are attractive as flexible power solutions because they can be woven into textiles, offering a convenient way to power future wearable electronics1,2,3,4. However, they are difficult to produce in lengths of more than a few centimetres, and longer fibres were thought to have higher internal resistances3,5 that compromised electrochemical performance6,7. Here we show that the internal resistance of such fibres has a hyperbolic cotangent function relationship with fibre length, where it first decreases before levelling off as length increases. Systematic studies confirm that this unexpected result is true for different fibre batteries. We are able to produce metres of high-performing fibre lithium-ion batteries through an optimized scalable industrial process. Our mass-produced fibre batteries have an energy density of 85.69 watt hour per kilogram (typical values8 are less than 1 watt hour per kilogram), based on the total weight of a lithium cobalt oxide/graphite full battery, including packaging. Its capacity retention reaches 90.5% after 500 charge–discharge cycles and 93% at 1C rate (compared with 0.1C rate capacity), which is comparable to commercial batteries such as pouch cells. Over 80 per cent capacity can be maintained after bending the fibre for 100,000 cycles. We show that fibre lithium-ion batteries woven into safe and washable textiles by industrial rapier loom can wirelessly charge a cell phone or power a health management jacket integrated with fibre sensors and a textile display.

Abstract:Fibre batteries are pioneering as flexible power solutions because they can be woven into textiles. Textile batteries offer a convenient and seamless way to power future wearable electronics. However, current fibre batteries are only centimetres long because longer fibre batteries are difficult to produce and they are thought to have significantly higher internal resistances that compromise electrochemical performance. Abstract:Wearable electronic devices that can be directly worn on the human body or combined with daily textiles have experienced a booming development with the rapid development of mobile electronics. These wearable electronic devices strongly demand indispensable, high performance power systems with small size, high flexibility, and adaptability to comfort frequent deformations during usage. Fabricating high‐performance energy storage systems in a 1D shape like fiber is recognized as a promising strategy to address the above issues. These fiber‐shaped power systems with diameters from tens to hundreds of micrometers can adapt to various deformations for stable operation in close contact with the human body. It is also possible to further weave such 1D energy storage devices into breathable textiles with matching electrochemical performances for the wearable electronics. Here, the key advancements related to fiber‐shaped energy storage devices are reviewed, including the synthesis of materials, the design of structures, and the optimization of properties for the most explored energy storage devices, i.e., supercapacitors, aprotic lithium‐based batteries, as well as novel aqueous battery systems. The remaining challenges are finally discussed to highlight the future direction of the development of fiber‐shaped energy storage devices.

Abstract:Wearable electronics have great demands for flexibility, high‐performance, and customized batteries that require the significant advancement of renewable and weavable power fiber design. Here, weavable, sewable, and washable aqueous zinc batteries (AZBs)‐based power fibers are developed by the synergistic interfacial design of the quinone‐rich polydopamine as organic redox‐active cathodes and nano‐binders on the carbon substrate simultaneously. By the removal of soluble monomers or oligomers and the boosted ratios of the quinone groups, the polydopamine polymers as organic redox‐active cathodes in AZBs deliver large specific capacity (372.3 mA h g−1 at 50 mA g−1), excellent toughness, and long‐term cyclic durability (80% retention over 1700 cycles at 1000 mA g−1). Moreover, the power textiles with custom‐tailored patterns can be prepared by the direct use of the fiber electrodes as the threads for a sewing and loom machine. The sewn or woven power textiles display stable electrochemical performances that can power various electronic devices under different bending conditions, even after washing for 3 h. This work provides great potential for large‐scale production of AZBs with high‐performance for next‐generation wearable energy‐storage devices.

Abstract:Next-generation electronics will be driven by miniaturized components tuned for wearable options, which will have the capability to provide humans and their environment with state-of-the-art connectivity and monitoring in the so-called internet of things (IoT) environment. These wearable and textile-based electronic devices (including sensors, controllers, displays, and many others) will need to be powered like other traditional electronics. And, one of the most innovative ways to do so is by designing textile and yarn-based batteries. To this date, lithium-ion batteries (LiBs) power the highest percentage of consumer electronics as a proven source of energy, albeit with some shortcomings like a limited lifetime, safety, and cost concerns. The high-performance LiBs can be realized using diverse inorganic nanomaterials as active materials in their electrodes. In this work, we have dedicated our efforts to describing, reviewing, and proposing the possible methods that can be employed to translate the complex existing inorganic materials for LiB electrodes into textile electrodes and their further assembly into compatible all-textile wearable LiBs. Extra efforts have been taken to describe most of the involved textile-related technologies in terms of their merits and demerits across the report. Finally, a broader perspective and conclusion have been drawn for this particular space of research.

Abstract:Fiber batteries are easily integrated with textiles to power wearable electronics because of their one-dimensional shape. Fiber batteries should meet the requirements of excellent mechanical strength, flexibility, durability, and superior electrochemical performance. Herein, high-strength cellulose yarns, lightweight, low-cost, and sustainable, are adopted as robust and flexible substrates of both cathode (polyaniline) and anode (metal Zn) of an aqueous Zn-ion fiber battery. The fiber battery delivers an energy density of 153.2 and 61.1 Wh/kg at a power density of 0.16 and 6.5 kW/kg, respectively (based on the total active mass of the cathode and anode). Meanwhile, superior cyclic stability and high flexibility are exhibited by the fiber battery. The capacity retention is 91.9% and 97.5% after 1000 charge/discharge and bending cycles, respectively. Impressively, the fiber battery works well under a mechanical load of 100 g to power an LED indicator.

Abstract:Flexible and wearable energy storage devices are receiving increasing attention with the ever‐growing market of wearable electronics. Fiber‐shaped batteries display a unique 1D architecture with the merits of superior flexibility, miniaturization potential, adaptability to deformation, and compatibility with the traditional textile industry, which are especially advantageous for wearable applications. In the recent research frontier in the field of fiber‐shaped batteries, in addition to higher performance, advances in multifunctional, scalable, and integrable systems are also the main themes. However, many difficulties exist, including difficult encapsulation and installation of separators, high internal resistance, and poor durability. Herein, the design principles (e.g., electrode preparation and battery assembly) and device performance (e.g., electrochemical and mechanical properties) of fiber‐shaped batteries, including lithium‐based batteries, zinc‐based batteries, and some other representative systems, are summarized, with a focus on multifunctional devices with environmental adaptability, stimuli‐responsive properties, and scalability up to energy textiles, with the hope of enlightening future research directions. Finally, technical challenges in the realistic wearable application of these batteries are also discussed with the aim of providing possible solutions and new insights for further improvement.

Abstract:An overview of strategies of preparation of fiber shaped battery and corresponding integration techniques and patterns are reported, which can significantly affect both the electrochemical and mechanical performances. This review aims to address pivotal questions regarding design of FSBs and provides an overview of relationship between traditional textile industry and modern smart textiles, especially battery textiles. Recently, due to its flexibility and ease of integration into wearable electronics, interest in fiber‐shaped batteries (FSBs) is burgeoning. While there is much research focused on improving the electrochemical performance of FSBs, little work is done to evaluate the safety and comfort of integrated FSBs for wearable electronics, which will significantly hinder the further development of high‐performance FSBs and their commercialization. In this review, the design, integration, and evaluation of FSBs incorporated in common textiles are fully discussed. Traditional textile characterization techniques and modern methods to evaluate its durability are also summarized. Finally, in view of developing commercial wearable battery textiles, a perspective toward improving the design of high‐performance FSB is presented.

Abstract:The evolution of electronic systems towards small, flexible, portable and human-centered forms drives the demand for on-body power supplies with lightweight and high flexibility. Fiber solar cells that can be integrated into soft and lightweight textiles are considered as potential sustainable power sources for the next generation of wearable electronics. To this end, they have been extensively investigated in the past decade aiming to improve their photovoltaic performances, but there is still a big gap between the high-performance devices and real applications. Herein, the key advances of configurations, fabrications and performances of fiber solar cells are highlighted and analyzed. Based on the current progress, the latest ideas with regard to the remaining challenges and opportunities beyond the reach of the previous studies are presented.

Abstract:Commercialized from 1990, lithium ion battery has become a ubiquitous powering supply for a large variety of electronics. Recently, it is facing a challenge and also a chance with the fast developing wearable electronics, e.g., Google Glass, Apple Watch, and Samsung Gear. To embark the "highway" of wearable devices, lithium ion battery should be endowed with some new abilities to be compatible with wearability. Flexibility is therefore highlighted. Furthermore, fiber format tends to achieve a high extent of flexibility and can be woven into textiles by the mature textile technology whose history is as long as that of the human being. Hence, fiber-shaped lithium ion battery has aroused a wide interest. The principle is the same of the planar batteries, which are composed of anode, cathode, and electrolyte/separator. The difference and the pivotal part is to establish a fiber-shaped skeleton, on which the battery components are stacked. This chapter summarizes the recent progress of fiber-shaped lithium ion batteries and their potential wearable applications. In the beginning, the working mechanism, structure, and electrode materials are introduced. Afterwards, several prototypes of flexible lithium ion batteries including bendable, stretchable, and cable-like lithium ion batteries are presented. Then we shift to discuss typical fiber-shaped lithium ion batteries spanning from materials synthesis, structure, and electrochemical performances.
Research Progress of Fiber-Shaped Electrochemical Energy Storage Devices

Abstract:During the past two decades, wearable devices have been broadly used for a variety of fields such as biomedical system, communication and microelectronics. The power system such as lithium-ion batteries is essential to the operation of wearable devices, which should adapt to irregular substrates and sustain complex deformations. A promising strategy is to fabricate high-performance energy storage devices in a fiber shape, e.g., fiber lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). These fiber LIBs with diameters ranging from tens to hundreds of micrometers can be readily integrated with human body and work stably under constant body motions. They can also be woven into breathable fabrics to satisfy the needs of wearable electronics. The key challenges facing fiber LIBs include effective loading of active materials on fiber electrodes, efficient charge transfer along fiber electrodes and interface stability of fiber electrodes under operation and deformation. Fiber electrodes are thus designed with hierarchical and aligned channels to effectively load active materials, so an effective electric field can be established between the fiber cathode and anode. Aligned carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can be made with conductive additives and active materials into fiber electrodes by a continuous spinning process. Conventional metal current collectors, binders and conductive agents are not required, and active materials may reach 90% of the electrode by weight. The resulting hierarchically helical CNT fiber electrode shows high flexibility, high strength, and high electrical conductivity. The flexural rigidity is as low as 10-7 nN/m(2), which is several orders of magnitude lower than those of ordinary synthetic fibers. The specific strength reaches 107 Nm/kg, which is higher than those of ordinary synthetic fibers. The conductivity reaches 10(4) S/cm, which can meet the needs of batteries. The aligned CNT composite fiber permits efficient electron transport, where the electrons hop among neighboring CNTs. Besides, due to the capillary force, the electrolyte can penetrate throughout the entire fiber via micrometer-sized and nanometer-sized channels, benefiting ion transport. The twisted CNT bundles firmly bind active materials and prevent their significant volume variations during charge and discharge processes. Therefore, the efficient conductive pathways can be maintained to deliver both high rate and cyclic stability. Fiber LIBs could be fabricated by assembling two fiber electrodes in parallel, twisting or coaxial structure. Gel electrolyte avoids the potential safety risks stemmed from liquid electrolytes. The continuously fiber LIBs show both high flexibility and energy storage capacity. After bending for 100000 cycles, the capacities have been well maintained, and the energy densities exceed 100 Wh/kg. Based on the similar strategy, a series of fiber energy storage devices such as supercapacitors, lithium-sulfur batteries, lithium-air batteries, zinc-ion batteries, zincair batteries and aluminum-air batteries, have been also produced. To summarize, fiber energy storage devices can be woven into flexible fabrics or integrated with energy harvesting devices to satisfy the next-generation electronics. Such a new strategy establishes an efficient avenue to particularly accelerate the development of wearable electronics in the future.
Graphene‐Based Fibers: Recent Advances in Preparation and Application

Abstract:Graphene‐based fibers (GBFs) are macroscopic 1D assemblies formed by using microscopic 2D graphene sheets as building blocks. Their unique structure exhibits the same merits as graphene such as low weight, high specific surface area, excellent mechanical/electrical properties, and ease of functionalization. Furthermore, the fibrous nature of GBFs is intrinsically compatible with existing textile technologies, making them suitable for applications in flexible and wearable electronics. Recently, novel synthetic methods have endowed GBFs with new structures and functions, further improving their mechanical and electrical properties. These improvements have rapidly bridged the gaps between laboratory demonstrations and real‐life applications in fiber‐shaped batteries, supercapacitors, and electrochemical sensors. Recent advances in the fabrication, optimization, and application of GBFs are systematically reviewed and a perspective on their future development is given.

Abstract:Abstract Fiber materials are highly desirable for wearable electronics that are expected to be flexible and stretchable. Compared with rigid and planar electronic devices, fiber-based wearable electronics provide significant advantages in terms of flexibility, stretchability and breathability, and they are considered as the pioneers in the new generation of soft wearables. The convergence of textile science, electronic engineering and nanotechnology has made it feasible to build electronic functions on fibers and maintain them during wear. Over the last few years, fiber-shaped wearable electronics with desired designability and integration features have been intensively explored and developed. As an indispensable part and cornerstone of flexible wearable devices, fibers are of great significance. Herein, the research progress of advanced fiber materials is reviewed, which mainly includes various material preparations, fabrication technologies and representative studies on different wearable applications. Abstract:It is highly desirable to develop flexible and efficient energy-storage systems for widely used wearable electronic products. To this end, fiber-shaped lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) attract increasing interest due to their combined superiorities of miniaturization, adaptability, and weavability, compared with conventional bulky and planar structures. Recent advances in the fabrication, structure, mechanism, and properties of fiber-shaped LIBs are summarized here, with a focus on the electrode material. Remaining challenges and future directions are also highlighted to provide some useful insights from the viewpoint of practical applications.
Flexible Fiber-Shaped Lithium and Sodium-Ion Batteries with Exclusive Ion Transport Channels and Superior Pseudocapacitive Charge Storage

Abstract:Fiber batteries have become increasingly important in the wearable energy market and thus, great efforts have been devoted to their development with better specific capacities, longer lifetimes, and sufficient flexibility. However, the sluggish kinetics of the ion transport in the electrochemical process has become a limitation for their practical applications. Herein, we directly employed 2D tungstate and graphene nanosheets as building blocks to construct fiber electrodes with 2D nanofluidic channels and 3D interconnected tunnels for exclusive and fast ion transport. These structures could accelerate the ionic transport process, avoiding the limitations from solid-state diffusion in the electrochemical process and finally facilitating efficient pseudocapacitive charge storage. The resulting fiber-shaped lithium- and sodium-ion batteries exhibited extremely high capacities (206 and 178 mA h g(-1)for LIBs and SIBs, respectively), excellent rate performance, long-term cycling capability (1000 cycles), and outstanding flexibility (200 bending cycles), which could continuously light an LED even under mechanical deformations. Thus, this work provides new insights into the structural engineering of fiber electrodes, showing great promise for boosting the battery performances in actual wearable applications to new levels.
One-step Production of Continuous Supercapacitor Fibers for a Flexible Power Textile

Abstract:Given that conventional bulky electrochemical energy storage devices are too rigid and heavy to be considered wearable, developing fully integrated power systems is expected to accelerate the successful commercialization of smart electronic textiles. Although great achievements have been made for fiber-shaped energy storage devices, there remain key challenges pertaining to their fabrication efficiency, scalability, and stability. Herein, a general and highly efficient method is developed to continuously fabricate supercapacitor fibers with lengths of kilometers at high production rate up to 118 m/h through a simple one-step wet spinning method. Beneficial from the designed unique two-circle-in-one-circle architecture, the resulting supercapacitor fibers demonstrated high electro-chemical stability even after being bended for 1 × 105 cycles. As a demonstration, these continuous supercapacitor fibers were further woven into a flexible power scarf for large-scale applications in wearable electronics. This simple and scalable fabrication process combined with the unique structure provides a general and effective paradigm to design other fiber-shaped devices like sensors, batteries, and solar cells.
