Abstract:Future power grids face various challenges due to a rapidly increasing share of renewable energy resources and increasing interplay with other energy sectors. Distributed energy resources (DERs) such as wind, solar, energy storage, combined heat and power plants, electric vehicles, and smart loads become prevalent. As shown in Figure 1, it has become an inevitable choice for the energy revolution to develop an integrated energy system that realizes the deep integration of new technologies with distributed energy and diversifies (cold, heat, electricity, gas, etc.) demand. Besides, we are moving towards an integrated energy system on an unprecedented scale. In the continuous development of integrated energy systems, the elements of participation and interaction are becoming more complex. The integration of variable sources and the efficient and synergistic utilization of these energies will be a key focus in the future development. This issue contains ten research articles focusing on modeling and analysis methods for IES, advanced technologies for DERs and microgrid, active distribution network, impact of DERs interconnection on the distribution network, etc. The paper by Cao et al. proposed the concept of shared ESS (Shared-ESS) for microgrid owner/ operator and applied it to the economic optimal dispatch of a microgrid cluster. The microgrids can achieve the peer-to-peer (P2P) transaction among each other with the use of the Shared-ESS, which significantly improves the energy utilization efficiency. The numerical analysis shows that the Shared-ESS can significantly reduce the energy bills of microgrid owner/operator, shift the usage of energy during peak time, and facilitate the renewable energy consumption. The orderly deregulation of planned electricity generation and consumption is an important measure for electricity market reform in several countries. Under the plan-market double-track mechanism (PMDM) implemented, a modified linear bidding function of generation companies was first proposed by He et al., and the unified clearing price of unilateral generation market is determined accordingly. Simulations based on data from a provincial electricity market in China illustrate that the market power can be reduced through a reasonable proportion of planned electricity designed by the power exchange. The paper by Chen et al. discusses a passive sliding mode control strategy of MMC-UPFC to achieve the advantages of both the passive controller and sliding mode controller. An unbalanced grid treatment strategy is also presented with the series side of MMC-UPFC. Negative sequence components of the grid voltages are detected by the cross-decoupling method with second order Edited and reviewed by: ZhaoYang Dong, University of New South Wales, Australia

Abstract:Carbon neutrality goals are driving the increased use of renewable energy (RE). Large-scale use of RE requires accurate energy generation forecasts; optimized power dispatch, which minimizes costs while satisfying operational constraints; effective system control to ensure a stable power supply; and electricity markets that support bidding and trading decisions associated with RE. However, the uncertainties in RE generation make renewable power systems challenging to operate. For example, the intermittent nature of wind power can make it difficult to balance the supply and demand of electricity in real time; therefore, traditional power sources could be needed to meet the demand, which can increase electricity prices. This Review outlines the potential of artificial intelligence-based methods for supporting renewable power system operation. We discuss the ability of machine learning, deep learning and reinforcement learning methods to facilitate power system forecasts, dispatch, control and markets to support the use of RE. We also emphasize the applicability of these techniques to different operational problems. Finally, we discuss potential trends in renewable power system development and approaches to address the associated operational challenges such as the increasingly distributed nature of RE installations, diversification of energy storage systems and growing market complexity.

Solar Energy
Abstract:In this research study, a novel demand response program (DRP) has been proposed for renewable-based microgrids (MGs) which takes into account the high penetration of tidal units and solar energy as important, prevalent renewable resources in the power systems. To this end, multi-objective problem (MOP) structure is a promising solution to reduce the whole operating costs of the scheduling problem as well as decrease the high risk of failure in electrical power transmission because of component increasing failure rates and extended repair time. The complexities and nonlinearity of the problem necessitate an innovative heuristic solution which is derived from the Grey Wolf optimization algorithm to help for resolving the problem without making any assumptions or compromising precision. This paper also proposes the dynamic 3-phase correction (DPC) formulation to boost the layout convergence ability by increasing the global search features. Through such a modification, the diversity of the members in the algorithm population increases which would result in low computational burden and low possibility of trapping in local optima. Moreover, it is necessary to have a clear and accurate estimation of the output power of renewable sources in the system. Considering that solar irradiance is hard to anticipate, this paper develops a deep learning layout that uses generative adversarial networks (GAN) to forecast the hourly power generation of the tidal and solar agents. GAN model consists of two competing networks which help to enhance the training process by increasing the accuracy of distinguishing real data from fake data. At the end, IEEE standard test system is used to evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of the suggested multi-layer problem. The simulation results display that the suggested deep model outperforms other well-known algorithms in smart microgrids.

Abstract:This article addresses the crucial challenge of maintaining a reliable power supply in integrated electric systems that combine solar power and energy storage. It focuses on optimizing key parameters for remote photovoltaic, wind, and battery energy storage within the grid, with a primary goal of sustaining 24-hour load demand. The study introduces a comprehensive approach that integrates fuel price dynamics and battery depletion costs into the optimization model for hybrid grids. This approach seeks a delicate balance between sustainable energy usage and cost-effectiveness. To achieve this balance, the research employs genetic algorithms, a robust computational technique. These algorithms play a vital role in calculating discharge-charge cycles and assessing battery health, addressing concerns about battery longevity and performance. Additionally, the study explores a machine learning framework, specifically nested learning, to further enhance the optimization process. Nested learning allows for the development of a sophisticated target function that considers various grid operation parameters and constraints. This machine learning approach enhances the system's ability to dynamically monitor power consumption and generation. Within this machine learning framework, the TD Lambda learning algorithm takes a prominent role in identifying the optimal function. This algorithm is well-known for its efficiency, particularly in non-Markovian scenarios. Its quick convergence enhances the overall performance of the hybrid grid, ensuring efficiency in changing conditions. The research also evaluates the impact of weight factors on various aspects, including battery charging status, algorithmic decisions, and their consequences on optimal energy pricing within the hybrid grid. This comprehensive assessment deepens the understanding of how these weight factors influence grid performance and economic viability.

Abstract:Nowadays, learning-based modeling methods are utilized to build a precise forecast model for renewable power sources. Computational Intelligence (CI) techniques have been recognized as effective methods in generating and optimizing renewable tools. The complexity of this variety of energy depends on its coverage of large sizes of data and parameters, which have to be investigated thoroughly. This paper covered the most resent and important researchers in the domain of renewable problems using the learning-based methods. Various types of Deep Learning (DL) and Machine Learning (ML) algorithms employed in Solar and Wind energy supplies are given. The performance of the given methods in the literature is assessed by a new taxonomy. This paper focus on conducting comprehensive state-of-the-art methods heading to performance evaluation of the given techniques and discusses vital difficulties and possibilities for extensive research. Based on the results, variations in efficiency, robustness, accuracy values, and generalization capability are the most obvious difficulties for using the learning techniques. In the case of the big dataset, the effectiveness of the learning techniques is significantly better than the other computational methods. However, applying and producing hybrid learning techniques with other optimization methods to develop and optimize the construction of the techniques is optionally indicated. In all cases, hybrid learning methods have better achievement than a single method due to the fact that hybrid methods gain the benefit of two or more techniques for providing an accurate forecast. Therefore, it is suggested to utilize hybrid learning techniques in the future to deal with energy generation problems.

Abstract:Due to the large volume of heterogeneous data provided by both the customer and the grid side, a big data visualization platform is built to discover the hidden useful knowledge for smart grid (SG) operation, control and situation awareness. An open source cluster computing framework based on Apache Spark is considering to discover the hidden knowledge of the bag-data. And the data is transmitted with a Open System Interconnection (OSI) model to the data visualization platform in a high-speed communication architecture. Google Earth and global geographic information system (GIS) are used to design the visualization platform and realize the result with the test bench.
The alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) is used to compute the optimal power flow in distributed manner. The proposed network reconfiguration is solved in parallel manner with the limited switches and the strong computing capability.
Further more, a multi-timescale operation approach is modeled with a three-phase distributed system, which consists the hourly scheduling at substation level and the minutes power flow operation at feeder level. The system cost with renewable generation is minimized at the substation level. The given error distribution model of renewable generation is simulated with a chance constraint, and the derived deterministic form is modeled with Gaussian mixture model (GMM) with genetic algorithm-based expectationmaximization (GAEM). The system cost is further reduced with the OPF in real-time (RT) scheduling. The semidefinite programming (SDP) is used to relax the nonconvexity of the three-phase unbalanced distribution system into a convex problem, which make sure to achieve the global optimal result. In the parallel manner, the ADMM is realizing getting the results in a short time.

Abstract:New energy power generation has strong randomness and volatility. Especially in the case of a high proportion of NE (network security) power generation, its sudden random power generation in a short period of time will seriously affect the stable operation of the power grid. Therefore, this paper proposes BP neural network algorithm to study the distributed NE grid-connected cooperative operation control technology. First of all, this paper studies the artificial intelligence algorithm in detail and applies it to the coordinated operation control of distributed NE grid-connected; then, based on the status quo of renewable energy PG (power generation), this paper establishes a suitable wind speed time series model, and thus proposes an optimization model based on a rolling scheduling optimization algorithm. The experimental results show that the average running time of the rolling scheduling optimization algorithm is maintained at about 0.2 s, which can effectively realize online operation. In addition, through rolling adjustment, the error between the total output curve of the unit and the actual total output curve of the unit can be significantly reduced. The research shows that the rolling scheduling optimization algorithm has a good optimization effect, can promote the coordinated development of wind farms and power systems, and increase the capacity of power systems.

Abstract:The two‐stage reactive power optimization framework consists of day‐ahead centralized optimization and real‐time decentralized optimization. The uncertainty of distributed energy resources (DERs) and loads in distribution networks poses challenges for reactive power optimization and control timeliness. The computational limitations of the traditional algorithms and the development of artificial intelligence (AI) based technologies have promoted the advancement of hybrid model‐data‐driven algorithms. This article proposes a two‐stage reactive power optimization method for distributed networks (DNs) based on a hybrid model‐data‐driven approach. In the first stage, based on the topology and line parameters of the DN, as well as forecasts of loads and renewable energy outputs, a mixed‐integer second‐order cone programming (MISOCP) algorithm is used to control the on‐load tap changer (OLTC) positions on an hourly day‐ahead basis. In the second stage, leveraging deep learning technology, the real‐time reactive power output of photovoltaics (PV) and wind power units is controlled at a 5‐min time scale throughout the day. Specifically, using traditional solvers, the global optimal reactive power output for PV and wind power units is determined first, corresponding to various load and renewable energy output scenarios. Then, neural networks are trained to map node power to the optimal reactive power outputs of renewable energy units, capturing the complex physical relationships. For the second stage, a transformer network framework with a self‐attention mechanism and multi‐head attention for deep learning training is applied to uncover the intrinsic and physical spatial relationships among high‐dimensional features. The proposed method is tested on a modified IEEE 33‐bus system with multiple distributed renewable energy sources. The case study results demonstrate that the proposed hybrid model‐data‐driven algorithm effectively coordinates day‐ahead and real‐time controls of various devices, achieving real‐time model‐free optimization throughout the day. Compared to traditional deep neural networks (DNNs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs), the transformer network provides superior reactive power optimization results.

Abstract:The scientific community widely recognizes that the broad use of renewable energy sources in clean energy systems will become a substantial and common trend in the next decades. The most urgent matter that has to be addressed is how to enhance the amount of renewable energy integration into the system while ensuring system stability in the presence of sudden fluctuations in generation and system faults. This study introduces a methodology that may be applied to any power system to optimize the level of renewable energy sources (RESs) integration. The methodology relies on using a trilayered neural network (TNN), which is a model utilized in the field of artificial intelligence. In order to apply and analyze the outcomes of the proposed optimization technique, the Kundur power system is employed as a case study. The objective of this methodology is to enhance the operation dispatches of a power system to attain a higher level of renewable energy output, specifically photovoltaic (PV) generation, while maintaining the stability of the system. This would enhance the stakeholders' or utility providers' capacity to make well-informed judgments on operation dispatch processes. The findings of this study suggest that it is generally recommended to raise the dispatchable power values for the generators in the loading region and lower the dispatchable power values for the generators in the generating area.

Abstract:In the context of increasing complexity in power system operations due to the integration of renewable energy sources, two main challenges arise: accurate short-term wind power forecasting and power flow convergence control. Accurate wind power forecasting plays a crucial role in power system scheduling, while controlling power flow convergence is essential for system stability. This study proposes a concise short-term wind power generation prediction model that combines a feature selection-based convolutional neural network-bidirectional long short-term memory network (CNN-BiLSTM) model. By effectively screening multidimensional feature datasets, the model optimizes the selection of highly correlated feature parameters and assigns weights to input data based on feature correlation. The CNN-BiLSTM combination model is then employed to establish a predictive model for wind power generation based on multiple features. Additionally, this study introduces an automatic adjustment model for power flow convergence using the D3QN (Double Dueling Q Network) reinforcement learning algorithm. This addresses the challenge of power imbalance leading to flow non-convergence, enabling effective control of power flow convergence and adaptive adjustment of operating modes. Experiments conducted using the KDD Cup 2022 wind power prediction dataset validate the wind power prediction method. Abstract:This study focuses on the implementation of an efficient hybrid power system in two main phases. Firstly, it aims to optimize the performance of individual renewable energy sources (RESs), ensuring their maximum efficiency. Secondly, it employs artificial intelligence to enhance energy flow within the microgrid. The primary focus is on ensuring the reliability, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness of microgrid operations. In the first phase, the system focuses on optimizing power generation from PV and wind turbines (WTs). To maximize power extraction from the PV system, the study utilizes turbulent flow of water-based optimization (TFWO) and gorilla troops optimizer (GTO) algorithms. An advanced hybrid TFWO-ANFIS and hybrid GTO-ANFIS-based MPPT techniques are proposed, enhancing energy capture efficiency. These advanced MPPT techniques combine the adaptability of ANFIS with the optimization capabilities of metaheuristic algorithms, resulting in improved energy capture efficiency. Additionally, the system improves the performance of WTs by implementing the Zero d-axis current (ZDC) strategy. The second phase focuses on efficient energy storage and utilization of backup systems. It uses optimization algorithms to manage battery charging, hydrogen production, and the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) approach. The outcomes of the proposed study showcase optimized backup system operation, resulting in cost savings and increased utilization of RESs. The proposed system is comprehensively assessed across diverse operational scenarios. Four different cases are presented, each differing in the degree of involvement of backup sources. The results validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in managing power generation and load demand, ensuring optimal system performance. A comparative analysis of two algorithms is conducted, utilizing a set of 9 benchmark test functions. The results of this analysis highlight the superior speed and accuracy of TFWO in reaching the best solution. TFWO exhibited a faster convergence rate towards the optimal solution. The optimization algorithms succeed in reducing the operating cost significantly, notably reaching a 4.05 % reduction in the third scenario.

Abstract:The reliability assessment of smart grid-integrated distributed power-generating coordination is an operational measure to ensure appropriate system operational set-ups in the appearance of numerous issues, such as equipment catastrophes and variations of generation capacity and the connected load. The incorporation of seasonable time-varying renewable energy sources such as doubly fed generator-based wind turbines into the existing power grid system makes the reliability assessment procedure challenging to a significant extent. Due to the enormous number of associated states involved in a power-generating system, it is unusual to compute all possible failure conditions to determine the system's reliability indicators. Therefore, nearly all of the artificial intelligence methodology-based search algorithms, along with their intrinsic conjunction mechanisms, encourage establishing the most significant states of the system within a reasonable time frame. This review's finding indicates that machine learning and deep learning-based predictive analysis fields have achieved fame because of their low budget, simple setup, shorter problem-solving time, and high level of precision. The systems analyzed in this review paper can be applied and extended to the incorporated power grid framework for improving functional and accurate analytical tools to enrich the power system's reliability and accuracy, overcome software constraints, and improve implementation strategies. An adapted IEEE Reliability Test System (IEEE-RTS) will be applied to authenticate the relevance and rationality of the proposed approach.

Abstract:This article highlights the intermittent character of RESs and reveals how deep learning techniques reduce the frequency deviation in automatic generation control (AGC) of the deregulated Modern Power System (MPS). With increasing MPS complexity comes more difficulty controlling frequency deviation and frequency security. The stability of an MPS is significantly affected by the robustness of the controller. The proposed MPS consists of thermal, hydro, and nuclear power plants, which include generation rate constraint (GRC) and governor dead band (GRB). The incorporation of wind and solar photovoltaic systems, together with their intermittent nature, has been considered to provide a more reliable control mechanism for enhanced frequency regulation in multi-area deregulated environments. The PID, FOPID, and TID basic AGC controllers are insufficient to offer a plant with optimal performance because of MPS hybridization. So, a new modified Cascaded tilted-FO derivative with filter ( CPDμF−TI ) controller has been suggested, and its performance has been checked by comparing it with different existing controllers, which provide better performance in terms of overshoot, undershoot, and settling time. To optimize the different controller parameters, a newly modified chaos quasi-opposition-based sea horse optimization (CQOSHO) approach has been suggested to demonstrate its superiority it compared with several popular existing Meta-heuristic optimization. Moreover, an extensive investigation of the proposed AGC has been investigated and successfully implemented. A data-driven deep-learning-based forecasting technique is used to forecast real load with renewable energy (wind and solar) in MPS. The flexibility and reliability of the proposed controller in deregulated systems have been evaluated in various situations, including step, multi-step disturbance, and modified IEEE-118 bus. This research proposes a learning-based attack detection technique for the cyber-physical model's grid frequency deviation analysis. The suggested controller's efficacy has been compared and evaluated against previously published literature. The investigation of the compressive results shows strong evidence of the benefit and effectiveness of the suggested control technique.

Abstract:Wind-driven turbines utilizing the doubly-fed induction generators aligned with the progressed IEC 61400 series standards have engrossed specific consideration as of their benefits, such as adjustable speed, consistent frequency mode of operation, self-governing competencies for voltage and frequency control, active and reactive power controls, and maximum power point tracking approach at the place of shared connection. Such resource combinations into the existing smart grid system cause open-ended problems regarding the security and reliability of power system dynamics, which needs attention. There is a prospect of advancing the art of wind turbine-operated doubly-fed induction generator control systems. This section assesses the smart grid-integrated power system dynamics, characteristics, and causes of instabilities. These instabilities are unclear in the wind and nonlinear load predictions, leading to a provisional load-rejection response. Here, machine learning computations and transfer functions measure physical inertia and control system design's association with power, voltage, and frequency response. The finding of the review in the paper indicates that artificial intelligence-based machine and deep learning predictive diagnosis fields have gained prominence because of their low cost, less infrastructure, reduced diagnostic time, and high level of accuracy. The machine and deep learning methodologies studied in this paper can be utilized and extended to the smart grid-integrated power context to create a framework for developing practical and accurate diagnostic tools to enhance the power system's accuracy and stability, software requirements, and deployment strategies.

Abstract:The current study considers numerous renewable energy resources, distributed power generation units, energy storage, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) in order to propose a reliable large-scale energy management framework that can be applied to islanded and grid-connected operations of renewable hybrid AC-DC microgrids (MGs). The framework uses a bat optimization algorithm (BOA) for minimizing the operating costs of the network and in addition introduces an intrusion detection system (IDS) according to the sequential hypothesis testing (SHT) method for detecting identity-enabled cyber-attacks (i.e classification of Sybil attacks, masquerading attacks) on the wireless-enabled advanced metering infrastructures (AMI). The suggested IDS uses the received signal strength (RSS) amount for distinguishing various signal resources and detecting cyberattacks. An IEEE 33-bus testing system has been used to construct a real-time hybrid MG in order to determine the reliability and efficiency of the suggested framework.

Abstract:Abstract The integration of renewable energy sources into the power grid, especially photovoltaic (PV) systems, has seen a significant upsurge due to the global push for sustainable energy. However, the variable nature of solar energy poses unique challenges in the effective management and control of PV power generation. This study introduces an innovative approach to intelligent decision-making in PV power generation control, leveraging deep learning techniques for temporal data feature modeling. By collecting and analyzing time-series data from PV systems, the proposed method utilizes feature neural computing to model the inherent characteristics of the data, facilitating effective temporal feature classification. The classification results are then employed to inform intelligent control strategies, optimizing the efficiency and reliability of PV power generation. This article proposes an end-to-end neural network structure that can simultaneously mine multi-scale local information and global temporal correlation information in sequences. This structure is primarily achieved through a module. The module consists of two parallel branches. One branch improves the InceptionTime module with depthwise separable convolution to extract multi-scale subsequence information. The other branch employs multi-head self-attention technology with added layer positional encoding to extract global temporal correlation information in sequences.

Abstract:In this article, an adaptive active power rolling dispatch strategy based on distributed deep reinforcement learning is proposed to deal with the uncertainty of high-proportioned renewable energy. For each agent, by using recurrent neural network layers and graph attention layers in its network structure, we aim to improve the generalization ability of the multiple agents in active power flow control. Furthermore, a regional graph attention network algorithm, which can effectively help agents aggregate the regional information of their neighborhood, is proposed to improve the information capture ability of agents. We adopt the structure of 'centralized training, distributed execution' to help agents improve the effectiveness of proposed methods in dynamic environments. The case studies demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can help multi-agents learn effective active power control strategies. Each agent has a strong generalization ability in terms of time granularity and network topology. We expect that such an approach can improve the practicability and adaptability of distributed AI method on power system control issues.

Abstract:With the proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs) in the distribution grid, it is a challenge to effectively control a large number of DERs resilient to the communication and security disruptions, as well as to provide the online grid services, such as voltage regulation and virtual power plant (VPP) dispatch. To this end, a hybrid feedback-based optimization algorithm along with deep learning forecasting technique is proposed to specifically address the cyber-related issues. The online decentralized feedback-based DER optimization control requires timely, accurate voltage measurement from the grid. However, in practice such information may not be received by the control center or even be corrupted. Therefore, the long short-term memory (LSTM) deep learning algorithm is employed to forecast delayed/missed/attacked messages with high accuracy. The IEEE 37-node feeder with high penetration of PV systems is used to validate the efficiency of the proposed hybrid algorithm. The results show that 1) the LSTM-forecasted lost voltage can effectively improve the performance of the DER control algorithm in the practical cyber-physical architecture; and 2) the LSTM forecasting strategy outperforms other strategies of using previous message and skipping dual parameter update.

Abstract:The performance of a power system can be measured and evaluated by its power flow analysis. Along with the penetration of renewable energies such as wind and solar, the power flow problem has become a complex optimization problem. In addition to this, constraint handling is another challenging task of this problem. The main critical problem of this dynamic power system having such variable energy sources is the intermittency of these VESs and complexity of constraint handling for a real-time optimal power flow (RT-OPF) problem. Therefore, optimal scheduling of generation sources with constraint satisfaction is the main goal of this study. Hence, a renewable energy forecasting–based, day-ahead dynamic optimal power flow (DA-DOPF) is presented in this paper with the forecasting of solar and wind patterns by using artificial neural networks. Moreover, contribution factors are calculated using triangular fuzzy membership function (T-FMF) in the sub-interval time slots. Furthermore, the superiority of feasible (SF) solution constraint handling approach is used to avoid the constraint violation of inequality constraints of optimal power flow. The IEEE 30-bus transmission network has been amended to integrate a solar photovoltaic and wind farm in different buses. In this approach, the computing program is based on MATPOWER which is a tool of MATLAB for load flow analysis which uses the Newton–Raphson technique because of its rapid convergence. Meteorological information has been gathered during the time frame January 1, 2015, to December 31, 2017, from Danyore Weather Station (DWS) at Hunza, Pakistan. A Levenberg–Marquardt calculation–based artificial neural network model is utilized to foresee the breeze speed and sunlight-based irradiance in light of its versatile nature. Finally, the results are discussed analytically to select the best generation schedule and control variable values.
