Abstract:High-efficiency, safe and economically viable nano-engineered platforms for oil spill cleanup and recovery are of great importance. This review takes account of the concept of nanomotors and micromotors and their most advancements in use for oil spill treatment. The fundamental facets of artificial micro- and nano-machines/nanobots/nanomotors (MNMs) are first documented, followed by the most recent influencing developments in chemical engineering approaches toward their specific utilizations. The surface chemistry of these MNMs, their behaviors in different water matrices and their roles in the removal of oil are examined, revealing great rooms for improvement. The strategies for surface and structural modification of these tiny machines toward enhancing their reactivity in the removal of oil and coupled tasking are discussed in details, highlighting the significance of fit-for-duty design and tailored fabrication. The engineering limitations and practical implementation barriers of this emerging technology and how it can be overcome are also considered. Finally, some engineering boundaries and perspectives of this fast-evolving field are proposed at the end.

Abstract:The extensive production and widespread use of plastic products have resulted in the gradual escalation of plastic pollution. Micro/nano/plastic pollution has become a global issue, and addressing how to "green" remove them is a crucial topic that needs to be tackled at this stage. Recently, micro/nanorobots have offered a promising solution for improving water monitoring and remediation as an environmentally friendly remediation strategy. Micro/nanorobots have been proven to efficiently remove micro/nanoplastics from water bodies. Micro/nanoplastics are captured by micro/nanorobots in water through electrostatic adsorption and electrophoretic interactions, and separation is achieved under the action of an external transverse rotating magnetic field. Their small size enables them to navigate easily in complex environments, while magnetic and optical drives help them move along established routes and reach different areas. With the assistance of these innovative robots, diffusion-limited reactions can be overcome, allowing for active contact with target pollutants. However, research on the removal of micro/nanoplastics by micro/nanorobots is still in its early stages. The dependence on chemical fuels and high costs severely limit the development and application of micro/nanorobots. Micro/nanoplastics are frequently captured by micro/nanorobots, but the degradation efficiency of micro/nanoplastics remains very low. Additionally, the secondary pollution caused by micro/nanorobots is also a key factor limiting their implementation. Although micro/nanorobots are a very promising technology for removing micro/nanoplastics, they still need to be explored in their applications. This paper discusses the opportunities and challenges faced by micro/nanorobots in removing micro/nanoplastics. Development and application of self-driven intelligent micro/nanorobots will help expedite the eco-friendly removal of micro/nanoplastics and other emerging pollutants.

Abstract:The increasing accumulation of persistent nondegradable microplastics in the marine environment represents a global environmental problem. Among emerging approaches to tackle microplastics are micro- and nanomotors, tiny devices capable of autonomous propulsion powered by chemical fuels or light. These devices are capable of on-the-fly recognition, capture, and decomposition of pollutants. In the past, various micromotors were designed to efficiently remove and degrade soluble organic pollutants. Current effort is given to the rational design and surface functionalization to achieve micromotors capable of capturing, transporting, and releasing microplastics of different shapes and chemical structures. The catalytic micromotors performing photocatalysis and photo-Fenton chemistry hold great promise for the degradation of most common plastics. In this review, we highlight recent progress in the field of micromotors for microplastics treatment. These tiny self-propelled machines are expected to stimulate a quantum leap in environmental remediation.

Abstract:Micro/nanomotors are ultra-small machines that can navigate autonomously and carry out particular tasks at the micro/nano scale. The micro/nanomotor can act as a "mobile smart" cleaner in complex situations by employing propulsion to degrade contaminants and clear impurities while overcoming resistance since it has a power unit that gives it the essential attribute of continuous movement. This work reviews the speed control and directional control of micro/nanomotors, which speed can range from 2.7 μm/s to 0.4 cm/s, as well as the propulsion mode of micro/nanomotors, including the propulsion mechanism of micro/nanomotors from both chemical and physical perspectives. The detection and degradation of environmental pollutants by the micro/nanomotors are also summarized. The functions of "mobile smart" cleaners in detection of heavy metals in the environment, detection, decomposition and degradation of organic compounds, removal of pathogenic bacteria, eliminating oil droplets from water, and using adsorption in environmental remediation are all covered in detail. Finally, the primary obstacles to converting micro/nanomotors into useful applications are examined, along with potential future developments in the sector.

Abstract:The advent of self-propelled micro/nanomotors represents a paradigm shift in the field of environmental remediation, offering a significant enhancement in the efficiency of conventional operations through the exploitation of the material phenomenon of active motion. Despite the considerable promise of micro/nanomotors for applications in environmental remediation, there has been a paucity of reviews that have focused on this area. This review identifies the current opportunities and challenges in utilizing micro/nanomotors to enhance contaminant degradation and removal, accelerate bacterial death, or enable dynamic environmental monitoring. It illustrates how mobile reactors or receptors can dramatically increase the speed and efficiency of environmental remediation processes. These studies exemplify the wide range of environmental applications of dynamic micro/nanomotors associated with their continuous motion, force, and function. Finally, the review discusses the challenges of transferring these exciting advances from the experimental scale to larger-scale field applications.

Abstract:Micro/nano-robots (MNRs) provide an efficient, environmentally friendly potential solution for environmental pollutant removal due to their small size, robust controllability, swarm behavior, and recyclability. However, summary on MNR application in pollutant removal from environmental media is limited. This review summarizes progress in MNR applications in water and soil pollutant removal, as well as solid waste harmless treatment. Analysis of driving mechanisms (chemically driven systems and externally powered systems), synthesis strategies, and removal principles are provided; discussions on limitations and future trends in the field of environmental pollutant removal are also included. MNRs are effective in water purification, soil treatment and solid waste harmlessness, boasting over 90% efficiency for heavy metals, peak 100% for microplastics, and generally above 50% for organic pollutants. However, there remain some restrictions such as scalability limitation, frictional resistance in solid surface, and swarm control complexity. Future research should focus on surface functionalization design, high-performance nanomotor creation, and intelligent control system development to promote further MNR applications and development in environmental treatment.

Abstract:Less than 1% of Earth's freshwater reserves is accessible. Industrialization, population growth and climate change are further exacerbating clean water shortage. Current water-remediation treatments fail to remove most pollutants completely or release toxic by-products into the environment. The use of self-propelled programmable micro- and nanoscale synthetic robots is a promising alternative way to improve water monitoring and remediation by overcoming diffusion-limited reactions and promoting interactions with target pollutants, including nano- and microplastics, persistent organic pollutants, heavy metals, oils and pathogenic microorganisms. This Review introduces the evolution of passive micro- and nanomaterials through active micro- and nanomotors and into advanced intelligent micro- and nanorobots in terms of motion ability, multifunctionality, adaptive response, swarming and mutual communication. After describing removal and degradation strategies, we present the most relevant improvements in water treatment, highlighting the design aspects necessary to improve remediation efficiency for specific contaminants. Finally, open challenges and future directions are discussed for the real-world application of smart micro- and nanorobots.

Abstract:Nowadays, global water scarcity is becoming a pressing issue, and the discharge of various pollutants leads to the biological pollution of water bodies, which further leads to the poisoning of living organisms. Consequently, traditional water treatment methods are proving inadequate in addressing the growing demands of various industries. As an effective and eco-friendly water treatment method, micro/nanorobots is making significant advancements. Based on researches conducted between 2019 and 2023 in the field of water pollution using micro/nanorobots, this paper comprehensively reviews the development of micro/nanorobots in water pollution control from multiple perspectives, including propulsion methods, decontamination mechanisms, experimental techniques, and water monitoring. Abstract:Microplastics and nanoplastics contamination in aquatic environments has become a growing public concern due to their potential adverse health effects and toxicity. Due to the diverse varieties and morphologies of microplastics, it is challenging to implement an effective removal strategy. Various approaches, including biological, physical, and chemical processes, have been investigated to remediate microplastics, but the overall effect is still low. Among the developed techniques, adsorption has demonstrated its simple operation, practical reusability, and relatively short required time. This review aims to evaluate and compare the strengths and limitations of MOF, aerogel, and sponge as emerging microplastic removal materials. The composition and properties of the matrix determined the removal efficacy (removal time, adsorption capacity) and durability (reusability). The impact of the use of these emerging materials on health and the environment is meticulously evaluated. The expectations and new challenges associated with these cutting-edge innovations are discussed.

Abstract:The removal of microplastics (MPs) from water using oil has shown early promise; however, incorporation of this technique into a feasible in situ method has yet to be developed. Here, a simple yet effective method of MP capture from water using vegetable oil with bubbles is demonstrated to achieve high removal efficiencies of > 98%. Comparisons are made with other methods of agitation, and higher removal efficiencies are observed when bubbles are used. Due to the low agitation provided by the bubbles, the oil layer remains unbroken, meaning that no oil is released into the bulk water phase. In this way, secondary contamination is avoided—unlike membrane filtration, another effective removal method, in which polymer-based membranes can break down due to chemical backwashing and ageing. It is demonstrated that variation in MP size within the micrometer range (50–170 μm) has minor impact on the removal efficiency; however, 100% removal is achieved for larger, millimeter-sized MPs (500–5000 μm). Similarly, a high removal efficiency of greater than 99% is achieved in the capture of microfibers. Other factors such as oil volume and water salinity are also investigated and discussed. Based on these results, the proposed method can be introduced into multiple setting types as a passive and continuous method of MP capture.

Abstract:Since their invention, plastics have become ubiquitous in modern societies all around the world, and their impact on the environment has, in recent years, become nearly as well-known. Plastics produced by humans have reached nearly every corner of the world, and throughout their centuries-long lifetimes, plastics continually break down into smaller and smaller particles due to the physical stresses which they are subjected to. These stresses eventually, inevitably, break these plastics down into microplastics -pieces of plastic small enough to be consumed by organisms in bodies of water throughout the globe. These microplastics can very easily bioaccumulate, and have been found everywhere from the Great Lakes to the bloodstreams of humans. The effects of these plastics are poorly understood, however, they have been linked to infertility, halted growth, and a host of other maladies in aquatic organisms. Currently, removal of these plastics has been neglected, with no governmental action to remove them from marine environments, and this project aims to begin prototyping a solution to this issue. A significant percentage of microplastics are found at the surface of waterways, thus trawling in surface waters using an autonomously propelled net is proposed as a way to solve this seemingly intractable issue. By attaching motors and a guidance system to a manta trawl, a device currently used for collecting microorganisms, the process of collecting microplastics in open water can be automated, and thus the work of removing plastics from the environment on a large scale can begin.

Microfluidic Fabrication of Bubble-Propelled Micromotors for Wastewater Treatment

Abstract:Bubble-propelled micromotors with controllable shapes and sizes have been developed by a microfluidic method, which serves for effective wastewater treatment. Using the emulsion from microfluidics as the template, monodisperse micromotors can be fabricated in large quantities based on phase separation and UV-induced monomer polymerization. By adjusting the volume ratio of the two immiscible oils (ethoxylated trimethylolpropane triacrylate/paraffin oil) in the initial emulsion, the geometry of the resulting micromotor can be precisely controlled from nearly spherical, hemispherical to crescent-shaped. The size of the micromotor can be manipulated by varying the fluid flow parameters. In addition, by incorporating functional nanoparticles into the asymmetric structure, the micromotor can be functionalized flexibly for water remediation. In this research, Fe3O4 and MnO2 nanoparticles were successfully loaded on Janus micromotors. Fe3O4 nanoparticles can act as catalysts for pollutant degradation and also control the movement direction of micromotors. MnO2 nanoparticles on the concave of the micromotor catalyzed H2O2 to produce bubble propulsion motion in solution, which further enhanced the degradation of pollutants. Consequently, the obtained micromotor demonstrated effective degradation of methylene blue and can be easily recovered by magnets. Furthermore, this simple and flexible strategy offers a synthetic way for anisotropic Janus particles, which will broaden their potential application.

Abstract:Microplastics and nanoplastics are being assumed as emerging toxic pollutants owing to their unique persistent physicochemical attributes, chemical stability, and nonbiodegradable nature. Owing to their possible toxicological impacts (not only on aquatic biota but also on humans), scientific communities are developing innovative technologies to remove microplastics and nanoplastics from polluted waters. Various technologies, including adsorption, coagulation, photocatalysis, bioremediation, and filtration, have been developed and employed to eliminate microplastics and nanoplastics. Recently, adsorption technology has been getting great interest in capturing microplastics and nanoplastics and achieving excellent removal performance. Therefore, this review is designed to discuss recent innovations in developing promising adsorbents for the remediation of microplastics and nanoplastics from wastewater and natural water. The developed adsorbents have been classified into four main classes: sponge/aerogel-based, metal-based, biochar-based, and other developed adsorbents, and their performance efficiencies have been critically examined. Further, the influence of various pertinent factors, including adsorbents' characteristics, microplastics/nanoplastics' characteristics, solution pH, reaction temperature, natural organic matter, and co-existing/interfering ions on the removal performance of advanced adsorbents, have been critically assessed. Importantly, the particle application of the developed adsorbents in removing microplastics and nanoplastics from natural water has been elucidated. In addition, barriers to market penetration of the developed adsorbents are briefly discussed to help experts transfer adsorption-based technology from laboratory-scale to commercial applications. Finally, the current knowledge gaps and future recommendations are highlighted to assist scientific communal for improving adsorption-based technologies to battle against microplastics and nanoplastics pollution.

Abstract:Nanoplastics (NPs) have the characteristics of various species, wide distribution, low concentration and difficult degradation. In recent years, the researches of NPs have mainly focused on its toxicity, origin and migration, and the quantitative detection and removal technology of NPs is an urgent technical problem to be solved. Here, an active biohybrid microrobots (DPA-algae robots, diphenolic acids-alage robots) was designed and developed for dynamic removal of NPs in water environment. Firstly, diphenolic acids were functionalized on algae to realize the specific adsorption of nanoplastics through hydrophobic force, electrostatic attraction and van der Waals force between diphenolic acids and nanoplastic particles. Secondly, to realize the rapid identification of NPs, the functionalized algae were assembled into microrobots through rapid click chemistry reaction, thus the self-propulsion ability of algae can be utilized to accelerate the identification and enrichment of target objects. The removal rate of nanoplastics by microalgae robots has increased to 83.1 % at the concentration of 0.125 mg/mL within 2 h compared with the unmodified algae, which is a very significant improvement. In addition, the removal rate was 84.1 % to 87.7 % in different media, so the dynamic removal of NPs is expected to be applied into the filtration process of waterworks by preparing a large number of algae-based microrobots. This multi-functional microrobot is cost-effective and biocompatible, providing a new solution to the global "plastic crisis".

Abstract:Flexible and effective methods for oil-water separation are crucial for reducing pollutant emissions and safeguarding water and fuel resources. In recent years, there has been growing interest in fundamental research and engineering applications related to water and fuel purification, especially oil-water separation. To date, filter materials with special wetting characteristics have been widely used in oil-water separation. Nanostructured materials are one of the most attractive candidates for next-generation oil-water separation. This review systematically summarizes the mechanisms and current status of oil-water separation using nanostructured materials. Basically, this can be achieved by using nanostructured materials with specific wettability and nanostructures. Here, we provide a detailed discussion of two general approaches and their filtration mechanisms: (1) the selective filtration technique, based on specific surface wettability, which allows only oil or water to penetrate while blocking impurities; (2) the absorption technique, employing porous sponges, fibers, or aerogels, which selectively absorbs impure oil or water droplets. Furthermore, the main failure modes are discussed in this review. The purposes of this article are: (1) to summarize the methods of oil-water separation by nanotechnology; (2) to raise the level of environmental protection consciousness of water pollution by using nanotechnology; (3) to tease out the features of different approaches and provide a pivotal theoretical basis to optimize the performance of filtering materials. Several approaches for oil and water separation are compared. Furthermore, the principle and application scope of each method are introduced.

Abstract:Numerous marine oil spill incidents and their environmental catastrophe have raised the concern of the research community and environmental agencies on the topic of the offshore crude oil spill. The oil transport through oil tankers and pipelines has further aggravated the risk of the oil spill. This has led to the necessity to develop an effective, environment-friendly, versatile oil spill clean-up strategy. The current review article analyses various nanotechnology-based methods for marine oil spill clean-up, focusing on their recovery rate, reusability and cost. The authors weighed the three primary factors recovery, reusability and cost distinctively for the analysis based on their significance in various contexts. The findings and analysis suggest that magnetic nanomaterials and nano-sorbent have been the most effective nanotechnology-based marine oil spill remediation techniques, with the magnetic paper based on ultralong hydroxyapatite nanowires standing out with a recovery rate of over 99%. The chitosan-silica hybrid nano-sorbent and multi-wall carbon nanotubes are also promising options with high recovery rates of up to 95-98% and the ability to be reused multiple times. Although the photocatalytic biodegradation approach and the nano-dispersion method do not offer benefits for recovery or reusability, they can nevertheless help lessen the negative ecological effects of marine oil spills. Therefore, careful evaluation and selection of the most appropriate method for each marine oil spill situation is crucial. The current review article provides valuable insights into the current state of nanotechnology-based marine oil spill clean-up methods and their potential applications.

As a result, we aim to introduce and review some of the most influential and advanced micro-/nanorobots (MNR) carried out over the past few years. Typical works are categorized by propulsion modes, analyzing their advantages and drawbacks in detail, and looking at specific applications. This review provides a concise overview of the contemporary advancements and applications of micro/nanorobots in water and environmental cleaning. The difficulties and future directions for using MNR in the biomedical fields are discussed.

Abstract:Bioinspired magnetically powered microrobots, based on microalgae cells modified with magnetic nanoparticles, are introduced. Upon being decorated with Fe3O4 nanoparticles, microalgae cells can achieve precise movement and wireless manipulation by controlling an external magnetic field. Leveraging the active mobility, the magnetic algae‐robots exhibit substantial efficiency in capturing and removing micro/nanoplastics, offering extensive applicability across various scenarios. The proliferation of micro/nanoplastics derived from the fragmentation of plastic waste released in the environment represents an increasingly alarming issue with adverse implications for aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Conventional approaches for mitigating such contamination are inadequate in removing plastic fragments with exceptionally tiny sizes. Therefore, it is highly urgent to develop efficient strategies to address the threats posed by micro/nanoplastics. Here, biohybrid microrobots, integrating the magnetic properties of Fe3O4 nanoparticles, are investigated for the dynamic removal of micro/nanoplastics from various aquatic environments via high‐precision magnetic actuation and reliable electrostatic interactions. After the surface decoration with Fe3O4 nanoparticles, algae cells can achieve precise locomotion and wireless manipulation by regulating an external magnetic field. Taking advantage of this active movement, magnetic algae robots (MARs) display considerable capture and removal efficiencies for micro/nanoplastics in water with extensive application scenarios. The reusability of MARs is also investigated, proving great recyclable performance. The growth and cell viability experiments elucidate that the presence of Fe3O4 nanoparticles may result in hormesis stimulation of algae growth. Such recyclable microrobots with eco‐friendly and low‐cost characteristics offer an attractive strategy for sustainably tackling micro/nanoplastics pollution.
