Abstract:Renewable lignin with native aromatic structure can be efficiently converted to value-added carbon quantum dots (CQDs), achieving a win-win situation for low-cost production of novel nanomaterials and reasonable disposal of biomass waste. The green synthesis of triple-emission nitrogen and boron co-doped CQDs (N, B-CQDs) is developed using alkali lignin as the carbon source and 3-aminophenylboronic acid as the dopant. The synthetic two-step route involves first acidolysis followed by hydrothermal treatment. Four kinds of N, B-CQDs are obtained by the adjustment of acid concentrations (0.01-0.10 mol/L), which all exhibit triple emissions of purple, blue and green fluorescence under the excitation wavelengths of 300, 330, and 490 nm, respectively. The N, B-CQDs prepared from the one with 0.07 mol/L of acid show the highest QYs of blue and green fluorescence due to its optimal graphitization degree and N, B doping contents. Their complicated fluorescence mechanism can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of core state and surface defect state induced by various heteroatoms (O, N and B). The triple-emission N, B-CQDs with prominent stability are utilized as fluorescent ink for multilevel anti-counterfeiting printing, providing a potential direction for the sustainable and extended application of lignin-derived CQDs.
